  • Samsung Patents Design For Folding Phone With Dual Displays

Samsung Patents Design For Folding Phone With Dual Displays

Samsung has been on a patent-filing spree recently. From in-display cameras to an entire display which doubles up as the fingerprint scanner, they’ve got it all covered. Recently, one of Samsung’s long pending designs, that of the folding phone. The folding phone was shown by the company at the Samsung Developer Conference held earlier this month and the device is expected to enter production in the early parts of next year. Now, Samsung has patented a folding dual display smartphone, quite different form the existing foldable phone.

The patent for this new phone was filed early this year, in May. It has now been published and describes a smartphone with two separate housings. Each of these have an almost full-sized display. While the design of the foldable was shown, it has many variations compared to this patent. The new patent lists two full sized screens which work independently. The foldable phone can either be used as a smartphone when folded or as a tablet when opened fully. Android is also developing a separate OS for the device, to help support it better.

    The Patent

The two display housings are independent of each other and area pulls together by the means of a magnet. You can also fold the device in a way to have both the displays facing outside. The patent describes the phone to be extremely versatile in terms of functionality and lists some of its functions. Data such as the time, status bar, battery and signal strength are shown on the left display. You can also use this screen to display a keyboard, while the content is shown on the other display of the phone.

The smartphone also has two cameras. Additionally, a camera, flash and speaker are also placed on the front of the phone. The display on the left also has a camera, lighting sensor and a proximity sensor. Additionally, the phone will also have an audio jack which will be placed on either the top or the bottom of the phone. The volume and power buttons are placed on the right side of the display.

While the concept is pretty impressive, we are not sure whether this phone will make it into production. It is however possible that Samsung may take some cues from this and apply it to their other phones.

  • Lenovo Z5s Hands On Images Reveal Camera Cutout In The Centre

Lenovo Z5s Hands On Images Reveal Camera Cutout In The Centre

The Lenovo Z5s was spotted a few days back in a TENAA listing and has been in the headlines ever since. The device sported triple rear cameras and what seemed to be a tear-drop notch. However, latest hands-on images of the phone reveal that it was a camera cut-out and not a notch. This is due to the fact that it is placed in the centre and not the side. Which is seen in the likes of the upcoming Galaxy A8s and the Huawei Nova 4.

    The Future Of Design

While it is evident that smartphone manufacturers are moving away from notches and sliding cameras, this might hint at where the trend is now moving. Being the third confirmed device with a camera cut-out, we might be looking at a new wave of smartphone design. The Lenovo Z5s is also important in other aspects as well. For starters, it places the cut-out in the middle of the display. And not to the right side like the Galaxy A8s and the Nova 4.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXrY4Q7DQvE

The centre aligned camera cut-out is not just aesthetically pleasing, but it also more practical in terms of the notification bar. The phone will be able to display all the notification icons without being disturbed by the camera. This is not the case with the right aligned cut-out. The right aligned cut-out will see all the notification icons being squeezed to the other side. However, the central placement also has its drawbacks.

It will be interesting to see how Lenovo sorts out the issue of displaying messages or notification alerts. The Lenovo Z5s is set for a December release, according to its teaser. The phone is said to have a 6.3 inch display and will be Lenovo’s first triple camera phone. It is also said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 chipset, but this information does not seem very credible.

Both the smartphones are set to launch on December 11 in Indonesia which will be soon followed by their India launch. The details about its features have already leaked online. Recently the company has officially announced the new devices will have the same size battery as its predecessor.

    Battery Giant

The latest development about the ZenFone Max M2 was shared by the company on their Indonesian twitter account. The tweet reveals the upcoming smartphone will have the same 5,000 mAh battery as the last generation device. It also reveals that the device has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a glass back. Previously released teasers by the company disclosed that the upcoming device will also have a notch at the top of the display which will house the front selfie camera. However, the company has not released any other information about the specifications of the smartphones. But, a leak from the past suggests that the devices will have the following specifications.

    ZenFone Max Pro M2 (ZB634KL) ZenFone Max M2 (ZB632KL )
    Screen Size 6-Inch FHD+ 6-Inch FHD+
    RAM 4 GB 4 GB

  • Huawei Nova 4 With Camera Cutout Leaked

Huawei Nova 4 With Camera Cutout Leaked

Huawei has been unclear about the launch of the Nova 4 but it seems that the leaks just won’t stop. The Nova 4 made an appearance recently at the Nova series’ brand ambassador’s party. Chinese singer and member of musical pop group TFBoys, Jackson Yee had thrown a grand birthday party. It was for his eighteenth birthday. The Nova 4 was spotted in his hand in the event when he showed it on stage. The event was incidentally live streamed as well.

    What we know so far

The Nova 4 was rumoured to have an in display camera hole which has become somewhat of a trend for smartphone manufacturers to be leaking. Samsung recently showcased renders of a camera cutout design called the Infinity O.Some devices such as the Vivo NEX and Oppo Find X have gone their own ways to make the screen truly notch free but the camera hole concept also seems to have caught on with manufacturers. The leaked images prove that the Nova 4 indeed will have a camera cutout. It can be seen in the images that the hole is tucked away in the corner of the screen, in line with the battery and network icons on top. The design seems to be far less intrusive compared to a traditional or even a teardrop notch.

As can be seen from the photographs, it seems like the phone has large bezels but on closer inspection, we could see the bezel is actually the back cover of the phone. The back of the phone wasn’t shown on the video so that still remains a surprise. There is very little information regarding the soon to be launched Huawei Nova 4. From what we know so far, according to rumours it is believed to have an LCD display and a Kirin 980 processor. There are no specific launch dates as of now. However it will be launched sometime in December of this year.

  • OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition Will Have 10 GB Of RAM

OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition Will Have 10 GB Of RAM

Compared to big players like Apple and Samsung, OnePlus is a fairly new company. But due to excellent features and aggressive pricing, their smartphones have already made a mark in the industry. Late last month the company announced their OnePlus 6T smartphone which is the successor to the remarkable OnePlus 6. Earlier this month the company launched a limited Thunder Purple variant of the same. To turn even more heads, the company has recently teased yet another upcoming limited edition variant of the OnePlus 6T. This time the company has collaborated with the British supercar maker McLaren. A report claims that the upcoming limited variant will have 10 GB of RAM and 256 GB of ROM.

McLaren Meets OnePlus: What To Expect?

Woking based McLaren is one of the first car company that springs to mind when one thinks about supercars. The company has won a large number of racing titles and is a big name in the global car scene. The upcoming McLaren F1 Edition OnePlus 6T device gets the tagline ‘Salute To Speed’ which clearly indicates that the company is cooking something speedy. The tip from mysmartprice about 10 GB of RAM could actually turn out true.

Till date, Xioami’s is the only company that offers a device with 10 GB of RAM which is the Mi Mix 3. However, that smartphone is only available in China currently. To bring this high spec feature to a wider audience, OnePlus can actually become the first company to offer 10 GB RAM smartphone to the global market.

    Release Date & Price

To summarise, these rumors will only be cleared up as the company officially announces the McLaren F1 Edition OnePlus 6T. The device is first set to launch in Woking, England (McLaren Headquarters) on the 11th of December which will be followed by its India launch on December 12. The price of the McLaren F1 Edition OnePlus 6T is currently available. But it is expected to be a sub 50K smartphone in India.

  • iPhone XR Is Apple’s Best Selling Model According To Apple

iPhone XR Is Apple’s Best Selling Model According To Apple

Apple has debunked rumours that their cheapest iPhone model is not selling well. In a slew of recent reports, many news websites had claimed that Apple is reducing production of the iPhone XR. The reason given was because it is not meeting the estimated sales expectations from the company. But in a recent report,  an Apple executive was quoted to have said that the iPhone XR is their best selling phone yet.

    What Led To This Belief?

Apple’s announcement that they will not be disclosing their unit sales data to their investors also added to the rumours. Even though the company is not providing their exact sales figures, they do occasionally disclose which of their models is selling better than the others. A recent report also suggested that Apple had reduced orders of the XR. This was believed to be because the demand was not matching the supply. Apple’s decision to bring back the iPhone X in Japan was also part of the reason for the media to feel that this was a pushback from the low iPhone XR sales.

According to Apple, the iPhone XR, iPhone 8 and iPhone 7 are selling quite well. Being a cheaper version of their higher end model, the iPhone XR was created for consumers who wished to jump in the Apple bandwagon but did not wish to spend as much as the iPhone XS.

The iPhone XR is not ‘cheap’ per se if we compare it to the relatively less pricey Android phones. But it is the company’s cheapest current generation iPhone. With OnePlus entering the iPhone dominated US market, it will be interesting to see how both companies fight it out to stay ahead in the game. The iPhone XR is also available in more colours than it’s bigger siblings. It is only second to the iPhone 5C which saw it’s release back in 2013.

Possible Huawei Nova 4 With A Camera Cut-Out Spotted

The concept was introduced by Samsung a few weeks back when they introduced their Galaxy A6s and Galaxy A9s smartphones. They call it the Infinity-O display, owing to the O shaped camera cut-out in the display of the phone. The Samsung Galaxy A8s was supposed to be the first smartphone with this technology. But yesterday, Huawei announced their own device which will feature the camera cut-out. According to sources, the phone is the Huawei Nova 4 and is set for a December launch, before the Samsung A8s.

    The Nova 4

Most recently, the phone has been spotted out in the wild, in a subway carriage in China. The user is obviously testing the phone and while the big chunky case does hide the device pretty well, it cannot possibly overshadow the unique camera cut-out. The camera cut-out is positioned on the top left corner of the smartphone and really stands out. The notifications and other relevant information are applied to the right.

Another interesting aspect of the image is the presence of a 3.5mm headphone jack. This is quite a luxury these days. The fact that Huawei is including this with this phone is a welcome step. The teaser has set the launch of the device for the 12th of December. We will get to know about the features of the device, closer to the launch date.

The camera cut-out is the next step towards a truly bezel-less display. Without the use of a sliding camera or a pop-out camera. It is the notch-less solution for a display. Until some manufacture figures out how to operate in-display cameras. However, the in-display camera could be seen soon in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10, as Samsung has already patented this technology. With all these phones going to be launched, the future of smartphone displays sure looks exciting.
