Report : Xiaomi is Building its First Smartwatch

Xiaomi smartphones have been well received world over. The company has expanded itself to various sections with Mi purifiers, power banks and pen drives. The Chinese electronics producer had not shown any inclination to smartwatches till now, but the rumour mill suggest another story. Xiaomi seems to have taken the recently launched Apple Watch as a challenge and according to a report, the China’s Apple is working furiously to gain a foothold in the smartwatch segment.

GSM Arena recently reported a few features of Xiaomi’s first smartwatch. According to the source, the Xiaomi smart watch will be clad in an elegant metal design and boast a circular dial. Also, it is said to equip a pulse wave velocity determiner that keeps a check on the stiffness of arteries. Overall, Xiaomi’s upcoming smartwatches will gauge your internal body activities all the time.

Xiaomi isn’t only known for its smartphones, the company recently unveiled a super affordable action camera.

For the time being, these are just reports and there’s no solid proof of its authenticity. Very scarce details are known about the watch, but from the little information, it can be said that Xiaomi is prepping to answer back to its competition. The company is renowned for providing superior specs at affordable prices like the new Mi Pad, Mi Note, and most recently, a super cheap action camera. It’s an easy conclusion, if the news turns out to be real, Xiaomi’s first smartwatch will be priced lesser than the other wearables in the market.

• YouTube Possibly Planning a Subscription based On-Demand Video Service

YouTube Possibly Planning a Subscription based On-Demand Video Service

The video streaming services have exploded in the recent years. For many of the internet users, online video services have replaced the need for a television as the primary entertainment source. Services like Vimeo, NetFlix, Hulu and others have become a prominent source for folks looking for original or premium content. YouTube is said to be considering plans to raise its dominance in this competitive video streaming arena by launching a subscription-based video on-demand service.

YouTube might rope in its YouTube stars to create videos under the YouTube Originals banner. As it would be subscription based service, the content would be ad-free. It is said that the new service would resemble the YouTube Music Key that offers ad-free access to select music video and free streaming from Google Play Music all for a monthly charge of $7.99.

Fan Funding is mutually beneficial for the content creator as well as the company
Fan Funding is mutually beneficial for the content creator as well as the company

A subscription-based service will definitely bring in more revenues for YouTube. The service requires heavy investment on the part of Google but doesn’t bring in huge revenues for the Silicon Valley giant. The increased use of Ad-blocks has also made it difficult to attract ad revenue on the website. YouTube is said to be finally breaking even, ten years after it began offering its service. The increased revenues garnered through subscriptions would also bring more income in the hands of the content creators thus encouraging them to create more engaging content.

In the long run, YouTube should also look into creating original series like the ones on NetFlix. Google has deep pockets and it should seriously look into competing in the original shows segment of online video market that has offered some amazing shows, such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. By putting its foot in this arena, YouTube will come closer to its goal of making scheduled television obsolete in the near future.

• AAP Takes The First Step Towards Providing Free Wi-Fi In Delhi

AAP Takes The First Step Towards Providing Free Wi-Fi In Delhi

Following the news of free Wi-Fi in Kolkata, one of the major poll promises of providing free Wi-Fi to Delhi is now under way by the AAP government. Ideas and suggestions are being crowd-sourced by the public for the same. The Government has set up ten questions by which ideas are being considered for wider consultation. Tips are also being adopted from different countries worldwide which already has established free public WiFi zones. The primary aim of this is to use much of the existing infrastructure to mount routers and other equipments, like electricity poles, etc.

According to AAP, universal access to the Internet is a transformative idea that can empower the citizens of the state. Delhi Dialogue Commission (DDC), an advisory body of AAP government chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, said that it will transform Delhi and become a role model for the rest of India to look up to.
It can be argued that the next greatest enabler of opportunities for the poorest of the poor would come from access to the information highway and Internet, and this will democratise opportunities and empower the ordinary man.
The ten questions asked by DDC are:

1. What should be the ideal level of access of public wi-fi and whether it can be made available right up to citizens’ doorsteps?
2. What are the feasibility and technological challenges and whether the wi-fi should be made available at well-defined public spaces in every neighbourhood?
3. what is the infrastructure and technology required to create the public wi-fi network?
4. What should be the essential services that a government should aim at providing through public wi-fi?
5. What is the capex and opex required to create and operate public wi-fi?
6. What could be a model that makes public wi-fi viable, sustainable and scalable in terms of usage, technology and finance?
7. Can public wi-fi network be made financially self- sustainable if viewed from the welfare service perspective alone?
8. Should there be multiple operators or an exclusive operator in a well-defined zone of the city?
9. What could be the operating architecture that brings all the stakeholders together?
10. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a private enterprise model vis-a-vis a PSU model?

The Delhi Dialogue Commission (DDC) is inviting opinions, ideas, suggestions within 200 words on the above ten questions at [email protected] or the Whatsapp helpline, +919643327265. DDC is also considering case studies of public Wi-Fi from other parts of the world.

• Google to Help Brands Create Effective Promotional Campaigns On YouTube

Google to Help Brands Create Effective Promotional Campaigns On YouTube

Google is the most prominent advertising platform of the internet. With its broad range of offerings, Google provides multiple advertising venues for companies. Google will be debuting its ‘Behind the Scene’ series to showcase the power of branded video content on its YouTube platform. The series will be launched today, with Clean&Clear’s ‘See the Real Me’ campaign, which debuted last year on YouTube. The central idea of ‘Behind the Scene’ series is to showcase the brands and agencies on how to create more gripping video content.
Increasingly we’re hearing from brands that they want to become better content creators on YouTube, but they’re not exactly sure how to do it. We thought instead of telling them how to be better content creators we can show them by highlighting a brand that’s going on the same journey.
This move is targeted at attracting more marketing personal who are focusing on creating branded online content to reach the masses. YouTube is keenly interested to be a beneficiary of the branded content push. The ‘Behind the Scene’ series will be the first of its kind for YouTube. Mogensen said that more of such series could help in educating brands on creating exciting content that strikes a chord with the audience.

Clean&Clear is a Johnson & Johnson skincare owned brand. It launched its ‘See the Real Me’ series on YouTube last year to showcase how real girls, social media influencers and celebrities tackle personal challenges. Clean&Clear produced more than 120 videos and was viewed by almost 30 million viewers.

The ‘Behind the Series’ will include videos on ‘how to create content strategy’, ‘how to spark a conversation with the audience using content’ and ‘how to operationalize content creation’. It will also feature interviews with the executives of Johnson & Johnson and the story of the conceptualization, production and launching of the campaign. This series will also help marketing and advertising students to understand the nitty-gritties of online marketing using the power of YouTube and other social media services.

• WhatsApp Voice Calling Feature Decoded; Here is What the New Version Looks Like

WhatsApp Voice Calling Feature Decoded; Here is What the New Version Looks Like

WhatsApp voice-calling is the feature Android users have been waiting for, for a long long time. The company has finally rolled out the update and the tool functions amazing on smartphones (on good network, of course.)

Now you don’t need to figure out a way to get an invite, users just need to download the latest version of the cross-platform mobile messaging service i.e. 2.12.5. Once downloaded, the free voice-calling service will be activated on your phones. It’s observed that some people, especially Samsung users, still don’t have access to the new calling feature, but it’s likely that they will receive it soon.

Screenshot_2015-03-16-10-33-54

We tried the new WhatsApp free calling feature on an HTC model. Here’s what we found new in the mobile messaging service:

Split screen

The new version of WhatsApp has a divided screen, just what we saw in the leaked images, a few months back. The page is split into three parts with categories: Calls, Chats and Contacts. Earlier there used to be one screen with Chats where you could find the chat history with your WhatsApp contacts.

1

Call Log

Just like the chat history, there is a call history option in the updated version. Just tap on Calls to see incoming calls, outgoing calls and missed calls. The feature is very much similar to the call log option on your phone, with notifications about the date and time of the calls as well.

     3

New WhatsApp Panel

WhatsApp has done major modifications in the app along with embedding the voice-calling tool. The Contacts section is shifted to the bottom and given it a place in one out of the three split columns of the screen. A dropdown option sits at the top right of the new panel, and on its left is Contacts field to add more contacts. The dropdown menu comprises of three options: Refresh, Status and Settings.

Uncluttered Format

WhatsApp has become more organised with the new version. Earlier, users have to go to the user’s profile to see a particular profile picture, but now it’s pretty easy. Click on the image of the contact and the picture appears in another window with options to start a call or chat.

WAPP

Tried and Tested:

We tried the voice-calling feature from an HTC phone with a Samsung S3 device, which doesn’t have the access to the upgrade. The calling was average, and there was a gap of a mere few seconds while sending out one conversation and receiving it at the other end.  Overall, it’s not as smooth as a regular call, but again it depends on the strength of your internet.

• Spain Tops The List For Fastest LTE Speeds, USA in Bottom Five

Spain Tops The List For Fastest LTE Speeds, USA in Bottom Five

4G LTE is fast gaining crowd across the world. LTE networks have penetrated most of the developed world and now has a strong presence in several developing countries too. The network has been activated in several cities across India by several operators. A new report is out now that lists the speed of LTE connectivity across various countries, and it has some interesting facts to report.

According to The State of The LTE report by OpenSignal, Spain, sits on the top of global LTE speed with the top speed of 18 Mbps. Following Spain in second spot is Finland, Denmark and South Korea with an average speed of 17 Mbps.

state of LTE report

In the Indian neighbourhood, Taiwan flaunts a speed of 14 Mbps; Hong Kong has 12 Mbps while Malaysia has 11 Mbps followed by Japan with 9 Mbps. India’s standing hasn’t been stated but considering its dismal standing for having the worst internet speed in Asia we doubt the LTE speeds would be any different yet.

The part of the report that may surprise many around the world is that the United States of America sits at the fourth spot from the end. The only super power on the planet has an average LTE speed of 7 Mbps. Its formal colony and Pacific paradise, Philippines is a spot above it with 8 Mbps LTE speeds. The only three countries behind America are Mexico and Kuwait with 6 Mbps each and Saudi Arabia with 3 Mbps. Not the kind of company the US would want to keep in this list.

We hope that with the tech-savvy administration in power currently in India would change the scenario for the country in the future. If the Digital India program is successful in creating a trustworthy connectivity backbone across the nation, it would propel the country forward rapidly in the information age and probably get a mention on the above list too.

• Check Out the World’s First Pain Relieving Wearable

Check Out the World’s First Pain Relieving Wearable

Not every wearable is about sleep tracking or counting steps. Among the many wearables showed at CES 2015, a useful one was called Quell. It is a drug-free service that helps in relieving chronic pain. The technology used for this device has been developed by Neurometrix, a company from Harvard Medical School which specialises in Neurotechnology.

This device consists of a strap that is worn around the affected part of the body, with its electrode touching the skin. When activated, it stimulates the nerves, in turn sending a message to the brain to release endogenous opioids- the body’s natural defence against pain. This brings relief within 15 minutes.

The main advantage of this device is that it is portable and can be carried along almost anywhere. The correct stimulation has to be attuned the first time, and Quell then automatically selects the same each time. iOS already has a supporting app and Android one is on its way.

Quell_

The only shortcoming would be the user will have to keep on buying the electrodes periodically. Normally, this would cost $250 (approx Rs. 15,773), but pre-ordering would cost $199 (Rs. 12,555). Details about its mass availability is still uncertain, though the device is currently up for pre-order on Indiegogo. The device has already reached $250,000 in pledges.

• Microsoft’s Voice Assistant Cortana Coming To Android and iOS Devices Soon

Microsoft’s Voice Assistant Cortana Coming To Android and iOS Devices Soon

Smartphone voice assistants can be described in plain simple words as ‘freaking cool’. They have come a long way and at present they can almost be seen as the baby versions of Tony Stark’s Jarvis. While Google Now is a great search and convenience tool, Microsoft’s Cortana and Apple’s Siri have anthropomorphic qualities that let them have human live conversations with the users. Microsoft has decided to take Cortana to a wider audience and will be bringing its voice assistant to iOS and Android devices.

Microsoft has said that it will be introducing Cortana on other operating systems as a standalone app. The company will also be integrating its artificial intelligence(AI) based technology called ‘Einstein’ with the voice assistant. With Einstein’s support, Cortana would be able to read and understand emails that will help it provide more convenient features to the users. It would let it offer suggestions to the user, even before they ask for it, something Google Now has been doing for a while.

Cortana is based on the artificially intelligent character of the same name from the famed video game, Halo. The personality of the voice assistant is also derived from the AI character from the game. Microsoft has been banking on Cortana’s ability to chit chat with the users. Cortana also offers usual voice assistant features like setting reminders and calendar, weather and traffic information, writing notes and messages.

Microsoft will also be bringing Cortana on Windows 10 operating system for desktops. It might actually beat Apple in this field as the Cupertino-based company didn’t bring Siri to the latest Yosemite operating system. Microsoft is contemplating the fall timeframe for the launch of the app. So if you liked Google Now but wanted a more human-like interaction, Microsoft’s Cortana is coming soon to give you company.

Speaking of voice assistants, remember that one time we got Siri to speak in Punjabi?

• Is OnePlus 2 Arriving Next Month?

Is OnePlus 2 Arriving Next Month?

Rumours of the OnePlus One successor have been in the news for quite some time. One retailer even had such a phone listed on a website, even though the design and the look of the phone were not unveiled. The same Chinese retailer, Geek Buying, has recently claimed the handset could be launched on 17th of April this year. Though, much like before, there are no such confirmations from the company as of yet.

As specified by geekbuying.com, the phone will sport a 5.5-inch 1080p display with Snapdragon 805 soC, much like the previous model. There is also a mention of a 16MP primary camera and a 5MP front camera, and is based on Android 4.4 with a 3GB RAM support.

In January this year, Carl Pei announced that it may take OnePlus close to six months to launch the OnePlus Two.
The OnePlus One has been selling pretty well across the world. In addition to the launch countries, it was launched in India late last year, and despite of initial hiccups involving Cyanogen and Micromax, OnePlus One has managed to do pretty well. Just a couple of days back, it was launched in 16 more countries in Europe.
Since OnePlus One was launched in April last year, this story may have some truth in it. However, we’d rather wait for an official confirmation from the company before jumping to conclusions. Another reason we would doubt the leak are the images accompanying the story show the Cyanogen logo at the back of the device. The company has made it clear that they are now developing their own OS aka OxygenOS.  Although we have to admit, it would be exciting to see what OnePlus might have in store for us with the Two.

Till we see the next iteration, go ahead and watch our review of the OnePlus One.

• BSNL Shifts To Next Generation Networks Technology For Fixed Line Services

BSNL Shifts To Next Generation Networks Technology For Fixed Line Services

Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, has inaugurated the Next Generation Networks (NGN technology) for the fixed line services of BSNL today at the Bharat Sanchar Bhawan, New Delhi.

According to their statement,

At present, BSNL plans to convert 14 million telephone lines with NGN technology. This is expected to cover more than 80 percent urban customers and approximately 90 percent rural customers. However, it is anticipated that the entire fixed line customers will have NGN facility by December, 2017. Initially, BSNL plans to invest approximately Rs.1,000 crores in upgrading the TDM technology with NGN technology.

The prominent feature of the NGN is that one network can transport all kinds of information or services by condensing these into packets, much like the Internet. Commending BSNL on the introduction of the new technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that this technology would help India in accomplishing the aims of the Digital India program of the Prime Minister. The voice calling feature on this new technology will be available at the same rate as the present BSNL fixed line service . Although, video calls may be charged a bit higher.

Currently, BSNL has more than 36000 telephone exchanges. Out of these, 28000 are in rural areas. These exchanges are working on the Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) technology that provides only voice calls. NGN will help to provide both, the fixed line telephony and broadband from the same telephone exchange. The government has planned to invest approximately Rs 1,000 crore is to upgrade the TDM technology.

• WhatsApp Speeds Up Roll Out of Voice Calling On all Android Devices

WhatsApp Speeds Up Roll Out of Voice Calling On all Android Devices

WhatsApp’s voice calling features has been a long awaited feature. The messaging app has virtually replaced SMS and now it is set to take its aim at the core business of mobile operators. The company had already begun offering the feature for some users through an invite system. It is being reported that WhatsApp has broadened the roll out process for voice calling, and it is available for all Android device.

This would be an exciting news for the users of the app. To get the update, users will have to receive a call from someone with the feature activated on their device. Once the user receives the call, the user interface will change, and three tabs will be introduced which represent calls, chats and contacts. The call section will feature call records like incoming, outgoing and missed calls.

WhatsApp has been offering the calling feature unofficially. It was reported a few days back that WhasApp had started offering invites for the feature. Those invites were time limited to a few hours. That time limit has been extended now.

Recently a malware was doing rounds that claimed to offer voice calling feature but simply directed the users to a malicious website. The website asks people to take part in a survey but ends up installing malware on the victim’s smartphone. So it’s advisable to not click on any random link and wait for the invite call to come to your device.

With so many reliable, affordable smartphones in the market, Karbonn’s present offering doesn’t seem to stand out. We have a strong feeling it will get lost in the crowd. • Jupiter’s moon Ganymede has a Hidden Saline Ocean, Confirms NASA

Jupiter’s moon Ganymede has a Hidden Saline Ocean, Confirms NASA

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has been working restlessly since its inception to find traces of water in our Solar system and the infinite universe. It has now been found that Jupiter’s largest moon Ganymede has been hiding something under its surface that might make it a prime contender for a life harbouring heavenly body.

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has made some observations that indicate the existence of an underground saltwater ocean. According to the US government agency, the subterranean ocean might have more water than the total water on the earth. An evidence of water on a heavenly body puts a tick ahead of one requisite component in the list for habitable worlds beyond Earth.

Ganymede

An aurora was spotted by NASA’s Space telescope that indicates the existence of water on the surface of Ganymede (the largest moon in the Solar System, and the only satellite to have a magnetic field of its own). An aurora is formed when charged particles interact with the magnetic field of any heavenly body. It is the glowing ribbons of charged particles that interact with its surrounding atmosphere. On earth these aururae are also known as Northern Lights.

It’s not just the aurorae that pointed out the presence of water on Ganymede, but the change in the behaviour of aurorae that can be caused by the existence of water. It was found that aurorae stayed in a stable position because of a salty, electrically conductive ocean. Had there been no water at its surface, the aurorae would have rocked back and forth. The observations by Hubble were done in UV light.

It is an essentially and important find, but the moon which is about the size of Mars, cannot be considered as an important place for further exploration. It is learnt that the saltwater ocean is around 100 miles deep below the outer crust of ice. Below the saline ocean lies the ice mantle that is then followed by rocky mantle and iron core. With present technologies, it would be impractical to make robots dig 100 miles below the upper crust, which is further separated from Saline Ocean through layers of ice.

Meanwhile, the Hubble project partner ESA (European Space Agency) will continue to conduct science operations. The agency will take a closer look at the other moons of Jupiter Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Europa is also one of the prime candidates for hosting liquid water which is crucial for hosting life. We won’t know for sure about the existence of life on this bodies unless we send a probe there but considering the low investment in the field of space research, it might be a while before we get there. Maybe its about time we cut down on the massive defence spending and use it to further our adventures in space.

• Engineers Create Chameleon-like Colour Changing Material for Next-Gen Displays

Engineers Create Chameleon-like Colour Changing Material for Next-Gen Displays

Science fiction shows, movies, and books have regularly talked about shape shifting and color-changing gizmos. They are used by spies and inquisitive nerds alike, and yes, the easiest example is Harry Potter and his invisibility cloak. There have been multiple efforts towards bringing these color changing technology to reality and the researchers at UC Berkley have come close with the development of their new material.

Let’s give a simple introduction to the technology. We have all seen how a peacock’s feather changes colors when viewed from different angles. It has nothing to do with the pigment of the feather, instead, it’s the tiny fibre like nanostructures that create the illusion of changing colors. This phenomenon is called structural coloration and can be seen many other examples in nature.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have announced in the journal, Optica, that they have designed a skin that can change the color simply by applying a tiny bit of physical force. They are calling it a “chameleon-like skin.”

artificial screen
The thin silicon based material changes color when applied with physical pressure.

For the creation of this material, the scientists have carved rows of ridges in a single layer of silicon measuring just 120 nanometers. For comparison, a single human hair measures 100,000 nanometers. These tiny ridges are spaced apart so that they can reflect light of a particular wavelength. The ridges are cut at an angle so as the spacing between the ridges changes, the wavelength of light being reflected also changes with it.

The researchers have said that their present material can shift from green to yellow, orange and red. The material is just one square centimeter wide. They also said that they are confident that they can create material that can change to any desired color. The next step in the process is to make bigger material so that the commercial and future applications could be studied.

The application of this chameleon skin technology is said to be limitless. It will help to cloak an entire vehicle so that it matches with its exteriors. It will find wide uses in the battlefield to camouflage military vehicles. The researchers are also looking at future possibilities of changing colors by activating a tiny electrical charge. They also said that this technology could be used on large scale structures like bridges and dams. Helping find structural damages with ease and help prevent probable catastrophes. For the regular folks, it will help to create new photosensitive display technologies that can be used for adding brilliant color presentations to outdoor entertainment venues.

The technology is unique, and we will see more application when other developers get their hands on it. Apart from the usual cloaking technologies, it may also be used to make color changing dresses that will be more than just white and gold or blue and black. Or maybe someday this material will help create real-life Mystique from X-men. Now that would be exciting.
