Samsung Could Be Working On A New Galaxy Fold With Curved Display

Foldable smartphones have been a hot topic of the year. A smartphone that can bend its screen was a far off fantasy in the past. Samsung, with the Galaxy Fold, became one of the first companies to ever make this dream a reality for many enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the technology was prematurely revealed to the world. However, A brand new report has suggested that the company might be working on a new folding device with curved edges.

Samsung has still not given an official announcement for the launch of its Galaxy Fold, and are now seemingly applying patents for a new device. The patent is for an upcoming foldable smartphone with a curved edge display. Unlike, Huawei’s upcoming Mate X which has its screen on the inside, Samsung is pushing for a display panel on the outside. The last couple of years have seen many such patents pop up showcasing revolutionary and innovative designs.

    Foldable smartphone

Samsung’s latest foldable smartphone was filed for a patent under the title, “Foldable electronic device including flexible device.” This implies that a full-screen curved edge folding handset may already be under development. The second iteration of the company’s foldable phone does not seem to have any visible sidebar and its front-facing is camera built into the screen.

The foldable smartphone has two major halves that are held together by a hinge, onto which both sides can cave into. According to the schematics, a rotatable hinge is being used for this design, unlike the one present in the Galaxy Fold. The hinge is partially built into the devices rear panels recess. The mechanism has to be perfect in its implementation lest they repeat the past iterations debacle. Samsung will most likely make this a premium smartphone with top-notch specs and hardware.

The South Korean OEM will probably incorporate a high-grade display into the device. A tablet format viewing experiences can be taken from the foldable smartphone once it is expanded. The device has curved edges flank both sides, that makes it look stylish like in previous Galaxy S and Note series flagships. Users will find a curved display on one side and the hinge on the other when the device is folded. The punch hole camera is housed on the top left corner of the screen, which allows for use even when the device isn’t folded. A heart rate sensor and flash are also planned according to the patent description.

The earpiece and ambient light sensors are placed on the top of the foldable smartphone, with the bottom having the mic (left half) and charging port (right half). The frame border on the side cannot be discerned due to the introduction of the curved edges. Placement of the power button is still unknown and a 3.5mm headphone jack will probably not be seen in the smartphone. Samsung had previously abandoned the buttonless idea on the Galaxy Note 10 during development, but the feature may finally make an appearance.

Samsung has already patented various folding devices and is planning on releasing a new foldable smartphone annually. The introduction of the curved edges is a highly welcomed addition to the already innovative design of the phone. The tech giant is pulling out every trick it has in the new device to make it fill the shortcoming of its predecessors. Many OEMs have yet to release foldable devices and Samsung could very well bring the form factor to mainstream audiences in the future.

Samsung Showcases Its Foldable Smartphone With Infinity Flex Display

The long awaited, folding smartphone from Samsung is finally here. Samsung unveiled the phone, which also doubles up as a tablet, at the Samsung Developer Conference. But the company did not reveal an official name for the device. However, they did mention that it uses what is called the Infinity Flex Display. This lets you use the phone as a smartphone when it is folded, and a tablet when the screen is unfolded. The device runs on the new Android OS for folding displays. It will enter mass-production early next year, according to Samsung.

To complete the transition, it uses a 4.6 inch Super AMOLED display which acts as the primary display for when you use it as a smartphone. Upon unfolding, you can use the 7.3 inch Super AMOLED display which is the main display, according to the company. With so much screen available, you can use up to three apps at once, while using the device. The company also ensures a smooth transition between apps. They also claim that the transition from a smartphone to a tablet is smooth and effortless at all times. To make this possible, they take the help of Android, which has announced support for foldable displays.

    The Foldable Future

Samsung has also set up an emulator SDK to help test apps for the device. Additionally, they will provide guidelines on how to develop apps for foldable smartphones. Samsung also said that they have spent a lot of time on perfecting the design elements for the new phone. From what we can see in the video of the device presented by the company, it has much thinner bezels and a smoother finish than the FlexPai folding smartphone, which was launched last week.

Some reports also suggest that this is not the production variant of the phone. Saying that the final version will have thinner bezels and a less bulky design. This would be key as no one would like to lug around a phone that is bulky and inconvenient, no matter how innovative it may be.

They stated that Samsung will use a 7.3 inch foldable internal OLED display and a 4.6 inch external OLED display. The internal display will hide completely when you fold the device and the external display will let you use it as a smartphone.

    Developer Conference

The device will take centre stage at Samsung’s Developer Conference. The official SDC app also states that Samsung will display their new Android 9 Pie Beta program and a brand new Galaxy UX. It also states that we will get to see ‘how a foldable displanew experience creates a totally e’. However, this is not the first folding display. Rouyu Reveals FlexPai : World’s First Foldable Smartphone

The launch of a smartphone with a folding display was imminent, but this isn’t the one we were expecting. While the Samsung Galaxy ‘F’ or even the folding smartphone from LG and Huawei were on the table, Chinese manufacturer Rouyu has beaten them to the finish line. The Rouyu Flexpai has a 7.8 inch HD display and runs on the Snapdragon 8150 SoC. The Snapdragon 8150 (or the Snapdragon 855) is yet to be announced. It will be the next flagship processor from Qualcomm, based on the 7nm manufacturing process.

    Specifications

These unique features make it the not only the first smartphone to have a folding display but also the first to run on the next generation processor from Qualcomm. The folding display is just 7.6 mm thick, according to the company. However, they haven’t specified as to whether this is an LCD or an OLED panel. The FlexiPai runs on the Snapdragon 8150, as mentioned before and has 6 GB and 8 GB RAM variants. The smartphone is available in 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB storage options.

The smartphone has a dual, 16 MP + 20 MP rear camera setup, which consists of a wide-angle and a telephoto lens, respectively.  The company did not mention anything about the battery capacity of the smartphone but did announce that it would support ‘Ro-Charge’, the company’s proprietary fast charging technology.

The company didn’t showcase the phone, just a few images and the key specifications. However, a popular leakster on twitter shared a hands-on demo with the device. This shows the folding mechanism of the smartphone. However, the design looks rough and the UI seems to struggle to keep up while folding the device. The smartphone shown in the video might just be a prototype or an earlier version, as we hope that the retail unit of the Rouyu Felxpai is much smoother.
