  • Apple Will Use 5nm Processors For iPhones Starting 2020

Apple Will Use 5nm Processors For iPhones Starting 2020

Apple is best known for making premium smartphones which offer top of the charts performance. Though many other OEM’s have taken a lead in the design and optics department, none of them has even come close to the processing power Apple’s A-series of SoC’s have. Its latest chipset, the Apple A12 is reported to be a full generation ahead of Qualcomm and Huawei’s offering, the Snapdragon 855 and the Kirin 980 respectively. Fresh reports state that Apple is planning to use 5nm processors in iPhones starting the year 2020.

    Apple’s 5nm Processors

Reports state that Apple’s chipset supplier, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company(TSMC) will announce its 5nm fabrication process in a few days. The event will take place on February 25 at the Mobile World Congress(MWC) in Barcelona. Apple will reportedly soon place an order for the manufacturing of 5nm chipsets which will be used in the 2020 iPhones. This chipset is expected to be called the A14 Bionic and would support 5G and enhanced machine learning capabilities.

Apple’s new 5nm chipsets will be made using a new technology called Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography, developed by TSMC. This technology would allow the company to pack more transistors in a confined space, making the chip smaller. This would then result in increased performance and efficiency of the new smartphones. TSMC claims that it will be able to mass produce these chipsets by 2020, confirming the reports. There were also reports claiming Apple would release a 5G iPhone next year. This device is expected to have an Intel modem to support the new communication standard.

Apple was one of the first company’s to unveil a 7nm chipset, the A12 Bionic in 2018; when they announced the current generation of iPhones . Other chipset manufacturers, like Qualcomm and Huawei also started manufacturing SoC’s using the 7nm fabrication process; but their products weren’t at par with Apple’s offering. In almost all the benchmarks, the Apple A12 Bionic has the Kirin 980 and the Snapdragon 855 beat. Unlike Apple, the competition isn’t likely to switch to 5nm chipsets as soon as next year, so they may release devices with 5nm chips in or after the year 2021.

  • Huawei’s Foldable Phone, The ‘Mate X’ Leaks

Huawei’s Foldable Phone, The ‘Mate X’ Leaks

Samsung surprised the world on February 20 when it unveiled the Galaxy Fold, its first foldable smartphone. Some other OEM’s like Huawei and Nubia, have already promised to show off a foldable device at the Mobile World Congress(MWC) 2019 in Barcelona. The foldable phone from Huawei has been teased for a while but no official details about the device were available. A fresh leak has revealed the design and the name of the device. The foldable smartphone from Huawei will be called the Mate X.

    Huawei Mate X

The Mate X will be the first foldable smartphone from the Chinese electronics giant Huawei. The leaked image shows workers setting up an outdoor advertisement of the device which reveals it in its entirety and affirms it will be the ‘World’s first foldable 5G phone’. The image also exposes the design of the device, which looks futuristic with a large screen that has an outward fold. The fold will split the screen into two, disabling the second screen and making the first screen work as a regular smartphone. Interestingly, this approach will be unlike Samsung’s, which put two screens in its foldable smartphone the Galaxy Fold, and has an inward fold.

The Mate X from the image looks similar to the Royole FlexPai, which was the world’s first commercially available foldable smartphone. The Huawei device will also have a triple camera setup and a side mounted fingerprint scanner. The display housing will be present on the left side of the device, where the screen will rest when folded completely. The smartphone will reportedly run on the Kirin 980 SoC which is manufactured using the 7nm fabrication process, has an Octa-core CPU and a Mali-G76 GPU.

Android To Replace The Back Navigation Button With Gestures In Android Q

The latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, Android 9 Pie was launched in August last year. The navigation gestures saw the removal of the multitasking navigation button from Android OS and instead it relied on just the ‘pill’ style navigation.

Android One Android Go Stock AndroidThe back navigation button was still present on the OS and made an appearance whenever in an application. This half-baked approach turned out to be polarising with many people ending up liking the change; and many people straight-up hating it. Recent reports suggest Android will let go of the back navigation button completely and instead rely upon gestures in the upcoming Android Q.

    Android Q Gestures

A device running a leaked version of Android Q revealed that Google may be planning to forego the back navigation button entirely in favour of one pill navigation. This would allow the users to go back with a single left swipe on the home ‘pill style’ button. This is expected to make Android easier to navigate and more intuitive. Notably, Google was inspired by Apple when it introduced gestures with the latest generation of Android.

    Android Pie Android 9 Google

Going by the release schedule Google follows while releasing the developer preview of the devices, the first developer preview of Android Q is expected to be out in a few weeks. It is, however not expected to introduce new gestures with the initial release. Qualcomm Is Designing Chipsets For Android Go Devices

Qualcomm is an American chipmaker that is renowned for its Snapdragon chipsets which are mostly featured on Android smartphones. The company makes chipsets which are suited for devices in a varied price range. The company is reported to be working on a budget chipset which will be targetted towards the affordable Android GO devices.

    What Is Android Go?

Android Go can also be referred to as Android Lite as the applications developed for this platform are tailored for entry-level devices. More often than not, the devices that fall under this category have 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM. In terms of storage, Android Go smartphones usually have 8 GB or 16 GB of inbuilt storage.

Benefits  and Need Of Android Go
    • Faster App Loading Time- The applications for Android Go platform are designed in a manner that they look up quickly on less feature rich smartphones.
    • Data Saver- Another important aspect that is kept in mind while developing apps for this platform is Data saving. Apple’s Device Lineup For 2019 Leaked

Each year Apple releases new versions of its devices with significant upgrades over their predecessors. The devices that generally see an update each year include the iPhones, MacBooks and iPads. According to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is bound to have a busier 2019 than usual, with more devices planned to launch in the year than usual. This would include three iPhones, a new MacBook Pro, new iPads and a 31-inch monitor with 6K resolution.

    Mobile Devices

According to Kuo, Apple will launch these devices over the course of the year. Like yesteryear, Apple will reportedly launch three iPhone models in the year 2019. These would have the same screen size and display types as the current iPhones. This means that two out of three iPhones will have an OLED display with a screen size of 5.8 inch and 6.5 inch. While the third iPhone will have a 6.1 inch Liquid Retina display.

The smartphones will feature an upgraded frosted glass casing, reverse wireless charging, upgraded FaceID, larger batteries and triple rear cameras. Unfortunately, the feature distribution in the devices isn’t known but reports suggest the triple cameras will only be offered in the 5.8-inch and the 6.5-inch iPhones. Also, contrary to the reports that the new iPhones will have a Type-C port, the devices are expected to retain a lightning port in 2019.

This change suggests a decrease in bezel size around the display. Reportedly, the upcoming 13-inch MacBook Pro is will be offered with up to 32 GB of RAM storage which is an appreciable addition. As the current model maxes out at 16 GB of RAM.

The company is also expected to launch a brand new monitor which will feature a 31.6-inch 6K display. It may sport a Mini-LED like backlight design. It is likely to be launched alongside the 31.6 inch monitor with 6k resolution.

    Wearables & More

The AirPods 2 will also be significantly different than the first generation, offering features like wireless charging and upgraded Bluetooth connectivity. The company is also expected to ship the AirPower wireless charging mat before the first half of 2019 ends.
