Microsoft May Join The Foldable Smartphone Bandwagon in 2019

Microsoft’s smartphone under Project Andromeda, which is a foldable screen phone may be launched as early as 2019. Foldable screen phone technology seems to be the future of smartphones. Many companies such as Samsung, Huawei and LG are working towards a future which will have large screen tablets that can be folded into phones and kept in your pockets. Microsoft, under Project Andromeda may launch the smartphone in 2019, according to a book called Beneath a Surface by journalist and Microsoft tech blogger collaborator Brad Sams.

    Microsoft’s Future Plans

The book talks about how Microsoft built a $1 billion an year business from their Surface laptop. Brad Sams also mentions that a host of devices such as a Microsoft Surface product, Xbox One and new Surface tablets are slated for their launch. The book mentions that new form factors can be released in the next couple of years. This probably indicates the new foldable phone. According to reports, it won’t have a phone like interface, it will be a tablet like interface that works in a smaller form factor when folded. But these are all speculations for the time being.

Microsoft has redirected their efforts and manpower towards the Surface lineup and wish to compete toe to toe with Apple’s iPad. The Surface lineup has earned them a lot of revenue in the recent past. 5G phones and foldable phones seem to be the right way to go for smartphone manufacturers right now. The author also revealed that the company plans to release a Surface Pro detachable tablet device. This device will sport a USB Type-C port, smaller bezels and rounded corners. This may see it’s launch in the later half of 2019. The company also plans to release two new low-cost Xbox One S devices, according to the book. The book talks about an ambient computing device that is also slated for launch. The device is a computer that senses and responds to user presence.

Microsoft Launches The New Surface Laptop 2, Surface Studio 2 and Surface Headphones

Microsoft launched an updated range of the current Surface devices and added some new products in their current line-up in this year’s surface event. The event was held in New York City on October 2nd. The new devices released are the Surface Laptop 2, Surface Studio 2, Surface Headphones and the Surface Pro 6. Microsoft has set the launch of the new devices for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

    1.  Surface Laptop 2:

    Surface Laptop 2

This is an updated version of the Surface Laptop that Microsoft released last year. The device has the new 8th Generation Intel Core processor. The user can opt for the Intel Core i5 or i7 processor as per their needs. It has a 13.5 inch PixelSense Display with a 2256 x 1504 px resolution and has a pixel density of 201 ppi.

PixelSense is Microsoft’s technology that can sense the amount of pressure that is being put on the display of Surface devices. This technology broadens the possibilities of what a touch screen is capable of. Microsoft is utilising this technology in their surface accessories like the Surface Pen and the Surface Dial. The display has 10 point muti-touch capabilities. In terms of storage, the users can select the SSD storage capacity which ranges from 128 GB to 1 TB. The RAM can be configured to either 8 GB or 16 GB. The device runs the Intel UHD 620 Graphics irrespective of the processor selection.

In terms of I/O ports the device has one USB 3.0 connector, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, mini display port and one surface connector port which is compatible with the Surface Dial screen interactions. The laptop also has a 720p HD webcam, dual stereo microphones and an ambient light sensor. The Surface Laptop 2 is available in four different colours: Burgundy, Platinum, Cobalt Blue and Black. The laptop price ranges from $ 999 for the base variant and goes all the way upto $ 2,199 for the top end variant.

    2. Surface Studio 2:Surface Studio 2

This is an updated version of the previously launched Surface Studio. Now Microsoft has updated the processor, graphics card and the storage. The Surface Studio 2 has an easy tilt screen which can be used to write and even draw on. Microsoft is targeting this machine towards design professionals. The screen is a 28 inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. Like the Surface Laptop 2, the Surface Studio 2 also has a 10 point multi-touch screen.

It runs on the 7th generation Intel-core i7-7820 HQ which is a step up from last generation that used an intel 6th generation processor. The pc has 1 TB or 2 TB SSD storage options and RAM can either be configured to 16 GB or 32 GB. There are two graphics card options to choose from, the Nvidia GTX 1060 with 6 GB of DDR 5 Ram or the Nvidia GTX 1070 with 8 GB of RAM (Note: This is the graphics card RAM and not the system’s main RAM).

In terms of camera, video and audio, it has a 5 MP front facing camera with 1080 HD video recording, dual microphones and 2.1 Dolby Stereo speakers. In terms of wireless connectivity, it has an 802.11 ac A/B/G/N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. The device weighs in at 9.56 kg. Other than Surface Studio 2, the box packs the Surface Pen, the surface keyboard, the surface mouse and the power cord for the device. The Surface Studio’s base model starts at $ 3,499 and goes upto $ 4,799 for the top of the line variant.

    3. Surface Pro 6:Surface Pro 6

The Surface Pro was first launched in 2013 and  has reached its 6th generation. The Surface Pro is Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s iPad. But the Surface Pro and iPad are fundamentally very different. The Apple iPad is very app driven and a mobile version of the complete computing experience whereas the Surface Pro 6 is a full fledged computer. The Surface Pro is Microsoft’s take on building a portable computer. The Surface Pro 6 has a detachable physical keyboard and it has a kick-back stand that can be adjusted to different angles to make it stand upright. The detachable keyboard is sold seprately.

The device has a 12.3 inch 10 point multi-touch display. The screen has a resolution of 2736 x 1824 px and a pixel density of 267 ppi. Powering the tablet is an 8th Generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor. The device has Intel UHD 620 Graphics built-in. Like the Surface Laptop 2, the RAM can be configured to either 8 GB or 16 GB. SSD storage can be selected from 128 GB upto 1 TB. The device has Bluetooth 4.1 technology and 802.11ac A/B/G/N Wi-Fi. It has an Accelerometer, a Gyroscope and an Ambient light sensor.

The I/o ports device has are: one USB 3.0 port, 3.5 mm headphone jack, Mini DisplayPort, Surface Connector (Microsoft’s proprietor connector) and a microSDXC card port. Microsoft claims the device has a battery backup of upto 13.5 hours which will vary depending upon the usage of the device. The tablet weighs at 775 grams for the i5 variant and 792 grams for the i7 variant. The price of the device varies between $ 899 and $ 1,899 depending upon the configuration.

Additional Accessories:Microsoft Surface Pen and Dial

    • Surface Pen: It is an active stylus and a digital pen that Microsoft developed to work alongside their Surface devices with PixelSense technology. It has variable pressure sensitivity points that allows it to work like a real life paint brush or a pen. Microsoft is mainly targeting it towards professionals in the design industry. People in this field can take advantage of the technological advancements that a digital design canvas offers compared to the traditional pen and paper.
    • Surface Dial: This is yet another accessory that is mainly targeted towards designing professionals. The dial sits on top of the screen of the Surface Laptop or Studio. It provides functionalities like zoom in and out, selecting paint-brush and a bunch of other features that can ease the work of professionals.

    4. Surface Headphones:Surface Headphones

This is another key product that Microsoft announced at this year’s Surface event. Microsoft Surface headphones have a lot of handy features. The headphones automatically pauses the audio as you remove them from your head and then resumes audio as you put them back.

They have Cortana integration. Cortana is Microsoft’s virtual assistant with whom the user can interact to perform certain tasks. You can ask Cortana to set reminders, inquire about the weather, etc. This is just a small example of what the virtual assistant is capable of. To control the volume of the headphones you can simply rotate your fingers around it’s ear cup. They also have variable active noise cancellation. The headphones have four microphones that helps in improving the noise cancellation quality. With this feature the user can filter or allow the amount of ambient sound that gets to your ears. The headphones are compatible with Windows 10, Android, iOS and macOs. They are available in Light Grey colour and have a price tag of $ 350.

Your Phone AppYour phone App from Microsoft

Additionally, Microsoft also demostrated their application “Your Phone” for Windows. With this application the user can directly respond to text messages they receive on their Android phone. This a really convenient feature and the user does not need to switch back and forth between the computer and phone to respond to text messages.

  • Microsoft Surface Phone Code-Named Andromeda Leaked

Microsoft Surface Phone Code-Named Andromeda Leaked

Microsoft while a primary software and OS developer, has in the past forayed into hardware. And while the company has played with many smartphone ideas, no real “Microsoft Made” hardware for a smartphone has yet been launched. However, according to some internal email leaks from Microsoft, the company may be working on a Microsoft Surface Phone allegedly code-named Andromeda, aimed at being “pocketable”. Microsoft released its Surface line of devices to allow the users to have both portable and stationary workstations. While the Surface Pro and the Surface RT caters to the users who demand a portable workstation, the Surface Studio works more or less like iMac.

    Surface Phone aka Andromeda

The Microsoft Surface Phone is code-named “Andromeda” which allegedly will be running on a new Operating System for the device with the same name. Microsoft has reportedly been working on a project under the code name of Andromeda for the past two years.

Must Read: 7.3-Inch Foldable Smartphone From Samsung Coming In December 2018

The concept designs by a Twitter user David Breyer suggest that the device may be a dual-screen smartphone.

As suggested by the leak, the device which Microsoft is allegedly working on, will not be a tablet, laptop, or a PC. This means that the only viable option left is a smartphone.

For the Microsoft, the Surface Phone could be a smart move as many manufacturers have already started producing foldable smartphones. The ZTE Axon M was released last year and is among the latest foldable smartphones featuring dual 5.2 inch 1080p LCD panel. These dual screens combine to form a 6.75 inch single screen display.

The leaked email intercepted by The Verge says,

“It’s a new pocketable Surface device form factor that brings together innovative new hardware and software experiences to create a truly personal and versatile computing experience”

This email provides a little insight on what Microsoft has in mind with the Surface Phone aka Andromeda. The phone may feature an entirely new software experience and a set of hardware which Microsoft is claiming to be innovative.

Microsoft had previously been working on a portable Surface device which was allegedly canceled almost a week before its release date. So we cannot say for sure when and if the Surface Phone or the Andromeda will be released but stay tuned on iGyaan as we will keep looking further into this story and keep you posted with the latest updates.

  • Here’s What You Can Expect From Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4

Here’s What You Can Expect From Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4

There’s an event happening on October 6 and invites for it are already out. Microsoft is gearing up unveil the new Surface Pro 4 along with the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. We’ve already spoken about the Lumia phones and what you can expect. Now we have some dirt on the Surface Pro 4 as well.

    Microsoft Invite

Whispers suggest that Microsoft is planning to come out with two variants of the Surface Pro 4. While one is expected to have a 12-inch display, much like the Surface Pro 3, the other is rumoured to feature a huge 14-inch screen with a 1440 x 2160 resolution and 185 ppi. The Surface Pro line are known for their sharp displays and the Surface Pro 4 looks to maintain the name. This could be Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s new iPad Pro, but we can only confirm this once the device is out in the open.

Other features of the upcoming Surface Pro 4 suggest that the tablet will use the new Skylake Core chipset from Intel. Up to 16 GB RAM will be available, with internal storage as high as 500 GB, and will run on the latest Windows 10 OS. We could also see a better battery backup as that’s one area that has been wanting.

    Microsoft Surface

In terms of design, makers at Microsoft have expressed that they are likely to stick with the current Surface Pro 3 look. You can also expect to see a new stylus in the offing considering the new Microsoft Edge browser on Windows 10 uses some new handwriting functions.

No information of what the Surface Pro 4 will cost, but it is expected to be priced similar to its predecessor, which means you could see a base price tag of $799. The event will be held on Tuesday, October 6th in New York City. Follow this space for updates on the announcements.

  • Rumour : Qualcomm Likely To Power Microsoft’s Next Surface RT

Rumour : Qualcomm Likely To Power Microsoft’s Next Surface RT

The latest rumours surrounding the Surface RT state that Microsoft is currently testing a new version of the tablet with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chipset inside. Bloomberg claims that Microsoft will update the tablet with new chips from Qualcomm, while NVIDIA will “continue as a supplier for some versions”, presumably including the existing model with its Tegra 3 chipset.

The Verge is even more specific on the new chips at the heart of the Surface RT. Its sources claim that the Snapdragon 800 is the CPU in question.

The news comes just as the Snapdragon 800 MDP leaked out showing impressive results, comparing well with Cortex A15 architectures and showing big strengths in the graphical department where the Adreno 330 basically sets a new standard for mobile graphics.

Sales of the Surface RT – which runs the pared-back Windows RT, a version intended for ARM processors, and which does not offer direct app support for software written for full Windows 8 – have failed to grab Microsoft a significant share of the market.

Earlier this month, Microsoft reaffirmed its commitment to RT at the Computex show in Taiwan and said it will add a version of the Outlook e-mail and calendar application in an attempt to make it more attractive to businesses.

Recently Microsoft appear to have been clearing out their remaining Surface RT stock, offering low prices to students, offloading 10,000 units to educators across the United States, and deeply discounting the tablet at TechEd earlier in the month.

  • Microsoft Surface with Windows 8 Pro priced starting US$899 for 64GB

Microsoft Surface with Windows 8 Pro priced starting US$899 for 64GB

Microsoft has finally put a price tag on the Surface tablet variant which will come with Windows 8 Pro. The Microsoft Surface was announced earlier this year and went on sale in the beginning of November in the US. While Microsoft has failed to move numbers, many owners are surprisingly happy with their devices. Microsoft plans to up the ante with a Pro edition packing Microsoft’s full fledged Windows 8 Pro.

It’s confirmed in a Microsoft blog post that the device will start at $899 for the 64GB model, and the higher capacity version with 128GB storage will cost $999. The Pro packing Surface also has a “Standalone” moniker which means you’ll get a Surface pen/stylus, but the touch/type covers will cost anothe US$100. Both capacity variants will be available in January, with no word on dates.

The Surface Pro will resemble the Surface RT and, including the same “VaporMg” casing and built-in kickstand, boasts a 10.6-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The upgraded Surface will also have a full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, 3rd Gen Intel Core i5 Processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000, 4GB of RAM, a Mini DisplayPort that can output a 2560 x 1440 resolution, a full-size USB 3.0 port and Windows 8 Pro with support for all desktop applications.

Lawyer To Sue Microsoft Over Storage Capacity Of Surface

    microsoft

A lawyer in California is suing Microsoft over his 32GB Surface, which he realized only had 16GB of free space. Andrew Sokolowski, the lawyer, is suing Microsoft for false advertising and unfair business practices, claiming that Microsoft should have told consumers that the 32GB Surface doesn’t actually have 32GB of free space.

The suit aims to change how Microsoft advertises its device and hopes to force the company to give back revenue and profits that resulted from its alleged wrongful conduct.

Microsoft said in a statement that it believes the suit is without merit.

“Customers understand the operating system and pre-installed applications reside on the device’s internal storage thereby reducing the total free space,” the company said. It noted that people can add storage via the microSD slot and USB port.

Microsoft confirmed on November 5 exactly how much usable storage space its Surface tablets come with out of the box. It says on its website that the 32GB Surface has 16GB of free space while the 64GB version has 45GB free. The Surface started selling October 26 and Sokolowski bought his device on November 7.

Sokolowski’s lawyer, Rhett Francisco, said on Wednesday that his client never saw Microsoft’s responses and said the details on its website are “buried.”

“They make you search and dig for it specifically, or you would never find it,” he said.

It’s common for mobile devices to have less usable storage space than advertised.

Microsoft Surface Tablet Gets Run Over by Car, Survives

    surface

What is worse than forgetting that you left your brand new Microsoft Surface on the top of your car before driving away? How about watching a car drive over your tablet as you helplessly stand by. And for the record, this was the 64GB model with an included Touch Cover that cost $699.  That’s exactly what happened after a WPCentral forum member left his Microsoft Surface tablet on the roof of his car and proceeded to drive over it before recalling what he’d done.

    surface
He writes, “Each car passed by with the tires on each side of the Surface until the very last car. The tire of the car ran completely over the Surface and next thing I saw was my brand new $700 tablet and touch cover flying through the air in separate directions! My heart jumped, and so did I! I jumped out of my car and ran across the street to first grab the tablet, then the Surface, and then my phone which of course fell out of my lap during all this. I jumped back in my car just before 60 mph traffic made its way to me!”
Pretty remarkable stuff, especially considering the Touch Cover prevented any screen damage whatsoever. During the Surface announcement, head of the tablet team Panos Panay dropped a Surface on stage in front of a ravenous and highly-skeptical tech media. To our surprise not only was the Surface unharmed, but he offered to do it again just to prove it wasn’t a fluke. In other words, Microsoft knows that the Surface is an incredibly well-built piece of technology.

Rumour : Microsoft Readying A 7-inch Xbox Surface Gaming Tablet?

    surface

Microsoft is expected to release a 7-inch gaming-focused Xbox Surface tablet in the future, according to The Verge. Back in June, we heard rumours that Microsoft would be releasing something called a Xbox Surface tablet, but that unsubstantiated info took a back seat to the actual Surface tablet announcement later that day.

Since then Microsoft hasn’t commented on the smaller version of its tablet series, focusing instead on the 10.6-inch Surface RT and upcoming Surface Pro devices. But if you cast your mind back to that warm day in June, the Xbox Surface was on tap to sport a 7-inch 1280×720 pixel screen, a custom ARM processor and speedy graphics chip. The Verge posits that the tablet won’t run a full version of Windows 8, but like Windows Phone 8 will have a kernel based on the real thing, just tuned for gaming. You can count on a massive graphics chip and multiplayer functionality, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the Kinect brand makes an appearance in the product’s marketing.

Considering the original Surface was one of the best-kept secrets in the industry, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Microsoft maintain a couple surprises of its own before the device is officially announced. When that will be is still up in the air, so stay tuned for more.

Microsoft Officially Unveils Windows 8 and the Surface RT tablet

    Windows

Microsoft has brought thousands of people to New York to celebrate the launch of its Windows 8 operating system and its Surface RT tablet, available October 26th. Touting 670 million users of Windows 7 and over 15 petabytes of data stored in its Skydrive cloud, Microsoft is confident that Windows 8 will become even more successful than its predecessor.

    windows

One major aspect of the announcement is bringing more attention to Windows RT, a version of Windows 8 optimized to run on ARM-based processors such as Nvidia’s Tegra 3 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 family. This is the version of Windows that will first become available on Microsoft’s Surface tablet — the Intel-powered Pro version will be available in the coming months — and will be limited to running apps downloaded from the Windows Store. While this severely limits the potential audience of Windows RT, Microsoft has promised that the Windows Store will contain more apps upon its launch than any other ecosystem did when it launched.

Microsoft claims that there have been over 1,000 PCs, in varying styles and sizes, certified to use Windows 8. The ARM-based PCs and tablets will have extensive peripheral support, supporting the majority of mice, keyboards and printers. As for apps, Microsoft promises that top brands will feature in the Store, as well as first-party apps such as Xbox Music, Games and Movies.

  • Microsoft “Surface Phone” To Be Out Next Summer?

Microsoft “Surface Phone” To Be Out Next Summer?

The latest rumours have Microsoft heading deeper into the hardware space and developing a phone. According to the sources over at the China Times, Microsoft has been working on the “Surface Phone” for several months and plans to release it sometime during the first half of 2013.

The alliance with Nokia as a manufacturing arm didn’t pan out as Microsoft intended, as the first Lumia phones couldn’t quite gain traction against the dual-core, high-res offerings of Android and iOS. Microsoft has certainly itself to blame since it took it quite a long time to introduce support for modern hardware in its mobile OS, and Nokia showed it can deliver innovative handsets when the platform allows it, with the Lumia 920.

Of course, this is all rumours and nothing is confirmed, but it’s not too far of a stretch to believe as Microsoft is preparing to release their own Windows 8 “Surface” tablet later this month – a product they successfully managed to keep under wraps until they unveiled it and has somewhat ruffled the feathers of WP partners.

No word on specs of the said “Surface Phone,” but in the meantime we’ll see welcome the Lumia 820, Lumia 920, Samsung ATIV S and HTC’s 8X and 8S.
