Xiaomi has jumped on many of the trending bandwagons of the year like using in display fingerprint scanner and full body display. However, no punch hole selfie camera has yet been seen from the company. Back in February, Xiaomi was reported to have filed patents for a smartphone with a punch hole camera in different variations. Model A features a wide punch hole display which houses all of the fundamental front sensors and selfie camera on the top left of the display. On the other hand, Model B features a similar anymore noticeable setup at the top centre. Model C is rather unique with a rather unfamiliar selfie camera and sensor setup spreading from the top centre to the flanking sides. Notably, each  variation has a dual camera sensors while Model A’s punch hole recess is slightly higher than the other two. Furthermore, it is also unknown which sensors is housed but the patents mention ‘structured light’ so 3D face sensors might be planned.

In order to maximise the screen-to-body ratio on a smartphone, OEMs started embracing design changes like a notch. Even though Apple was not first company to launch the a smartphone with a notch, iPhone X from 2017 made this design change much more acceptable to the general public. As it seemed, displays with notch on top were here to stay, companies including Samsung and Huawei launched devices with punch hole (1,2). Although the punch hole is widely accepted, there is no doubt that this cutout in the display acts as an intrusion while playing games or consuming media. In order to overcome this obstacle, smartphone manufacturer, OPPO is resorting to a unique and impressive technological advancement. In the latest teaser, OPPO is boasting of a smartphone with a punch hole which can be concealed or covered with the display on top.

In simpler words, the OPPO smartphone will have a punch hole camera which whenever not in use will be invisible as the pixels on top will function like any other region on the display. Korean electronics giant, Samsung was previously granted a patent for a device with a similar feature which is yet to make its way to final production.

Speaking of its launch, OPPO will unveil the said smartphone with an invisible punch hole at MWC Shangai which is scheduled for 26th to 28th June. User’s who are shocked and want to question that MWC for the year has already been held in the month of February. China gets its very own MWC due to a massive number of OEMs and consumers based in the country.

Other than the revolutionary display tech, no other details about the device have been revealed. Though the device is assumed to be a flagship handset which will be kitted with likewise specifications. LG Patents A Smartphone With Punch Hole Front Camera

A glimpse of LG’s upcoming smartphone was seen through a patent granted by the Turkish Patent Institute. The device in question is reported to sport a punch-hole front-facing camera. This would mark the first time LG is planning to use this form of bezel reduction method for an all screen device.

    LG

According to the schematics, the smartphone will sport a punch-hole camera in the top left corner of the screen. The front panel is devoid of any seems apart from bezels on the top alongside an earpiece with necessary sensors and a buttonless bottom. The back, however, is a familiar design that has already been seen before. LG V40 ThinQ is clearly used as an inspiration for the rear layout, as the schematics show a striking resemblance.

The triple camera module at the back is in an identical pattern to the LG V40 ThinQ with a horizontal placement side by side. A flash flanks the right of the camera set up while the fingerprint sensor is placed right below it. This proves that the new device will not feature an in-display fingerprint scanner at the front. Changes to LG’s formula has been historically slow with the rate of adoption being behind other OEMs at this moment.

    LG

Unfortunately, no information about specifications as such is available regarding the upcoming device, or rather even if it is planned on being mass produced. With this only assumptions can be made regarding its specifications and hardware. If the device is similar to LG V40 ThinQ then it might see the same sort of top-notch hardware treatment if it launches the coming months.

Samsung Is Developing A Smartphone With An Invisible Punch Hole Camera

Korean electronics Giant, Samsung launched the Galaxy S10 lineup of smartphones last month which are packed with top tier specifications. Out of all the remarkable features, one evident feature that stands out is the punch hole selfie camera. This feature has allowed Samsung to manufacture smartphones that have a considerably high screen-to-body ratio. As of now, Samsung has only released a handful of smartphones with a punch hole camera, a fresh report claims that the company wants to push the boundaries of this technology even further. According to a senior Samsung executive, the company is working towards developing a smartphone with an invisible punch hole camera.

In simple words, the smartphones with this type of display will have a punch hole camera which would stay concealed during regular usage. The light pixels on the display in front of the camera will have a clear back. Given that the user turns on the selfie camera on the smartphone with this type of display, the pixels in the concerned area will turn off. Due to the transparent back of the pixels, the camera underneath them will function as a regular punch hole camera which can unobstructedly capture videos and images.

In addition to the display with a hidden selfie camera, Samsung is also working on another praiseworthy technology for displays of future smartphones. The company is developing displays which will have an inbuilt speaker eliminating the need for an additional earpiece. This technology has already been seen on the LG G8 ThinQ which was launched at the MWC 2019. Such a display would have a piezoelectric sensor mounted underneath with whose help the entire display will function as an earpiece.

  • Apple Wont Ditch The iPhone’s Notch Till 2020

Apple Wont Ditch The iPhone’s Notch Till 2020

Apple was one of the first companies to launch a smartphone with a display notch. The notch was first seen on the iPhone X which was launched in the year 2017. This year Apple launched three new devices, the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR; all of which have a notch display. Although Apple’s notch raised a few eyebrows initially, a lot of Android OEMs have incorporated it on their smartphones. Several Android smartphone manufacturers are experimenting with different shapes and sizes of the notch.

    The Future Of The Notch

OnePlus, another leader in the smartphone industry launched the OnePlus 6 with a narrow notch in the display. Its successor, the OnePlus 6T has a smaller waterdrop notch which translates into an even higher screen-to-body ratio. The future smartphones from the company are expected to push the screen-to-body ratio even further.

Samsung, the number one global smartphone manufacturer, has refrained from incorporating the notch on their smartphones. However, the company had launched the Galaxy A8s smartphone which has a punch hole in the display for the front-facing camera. Furthermore, the company is expected to launch the Galaxy S10 in Q1 of 2019 which is believed to have a non-circular cutout in the display which will accommodate multiple front-facing cameras. Other companies including Huawei, Honor, and Lenovo have either launched smartphones with this type of camera cutout or are about to do so which indicates this type of notches are the future.

When Will iPhones Get Punch-Hole Cameras?

A Chinese leaker, Ice universe claims that the Apple iPhone’s that will launch in 2019 will have a similar wide notch as their predecessor. However, he claims the 2020 Apple iPhones will do away with the notch and incorporate the punch hole cameras in the display. These claims can be agreed with due to various reasons.

    • Unlike Samsung, Apple does not manufacture displays for their smartphones. The company sources them from 3rd party manufacturers like LG and Samsung. Therefore, Apple needs to collaborate with these 3rd party vendors to design and develop displays with this feature. Apparently, the development and mass production of all this will take time.
    • Another hindrance that limits Apple from using this type of display is their complex Face ID recognition mechanism. Apple iPhone’s have one of the most secure facial recognition on any smartphone. To achieve this level of security the company makes use of an IR camera which is combined with the regular camera sensor. All these components are housed in the notch of current iPhone models. To launch iPhone’s with a punch-hole camera, Apple will have to first resolve this issue.
