    Indian Government Asks 21 Smartphone Companies To Share Security Information

    Amidst the multiple reports of online thefts and data leakage, the Ministry of Electronics and IT has taken steps to ensure privacy and safety of user data. The Ministry sent our notices to 21 smartphone makers to provide the framework as well as the procedures they follow for data security.

    Aside from the global providers like Apple and Samsung and Indian firms like Micromax, majority of the listed 21 Smartphone companies included Chinese makers such as Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Lenovo.

    All 21 smartphone companies are to provide detailed information about security practices, architecture, process, guidelines and standards followed for providing secure transmission and storage of data, irrespective of whether the devices are manufactured in India or not. The government has announced 28 August as the official deadline for all the firms to file the security compliances. Several reports mention that additional measures such a security adits will also be taken.

    If a company fails to provide the information, the firm will face charges and levy penalty for violation of security norms. Though the extent of penalty has not been stated yet, but according to the Sec 43(a) of the IT Act, any company found to be in violation of rules can attract penalties of up to Rs. 5 crore along with a provision for unlimited compensation.

    A ministry official  said that, “The first step in that direction is that we have asked the mobile companies to inform us what are the security procedures and processes that have been taken by them to ensure the security of the data of the users and their privacy… We want to make sure that any device that is sold in the country should be safe.”

    This series of events unfolded after the IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad called a meeting of senior officials in the IT department and representatives of CERT-In to understand the situation. As a result, a notice was sent to 21 companies, issued under Section 70B(6) of the IT Act.

    With the government progressing towards digital India, and pushing for digital payments,  data security has become much more crucial, and while these seems like a step towards preventing data breaches, a large amount of the fear is towards the Chinese majors collecting sensitive information using smartphones which at present flood the Indian market.

    Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Running On Exynos 8895 Spotted On Geekbench

    The 8th instalment in the Samsung Note series, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, has been subject to a lot of rumors and the latest leaks show us the internals of the new device.

    The Note 8 was spotted on benchmarking website, Geekbench by the model number of  SM-N950F. The leak has confirmed hardware specs that were widely expected. Running the Exynos 8895 chipset just like the Galaxy S8 and S8+ along with a 2.45GHz octa-core CPU for all markets except the US where the Galaxy Note 8 will launch with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and 6GB RAM. The listing also confirms that the Galaxy Note 8 will run on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top. The device scores 1984 in single-core performance, while its multi-core performance score is 6116.

     

    There have been many other leaks suggesting that the device will sport a 6.4 inch Super AMOLED edge-to-edge display Quad HD display. Recently, the Galaxy Note 8 was leaked in live images confirming the dual-camera setup at the back and a Midnight Black colour variant. Other rumoured colour variants are Orchid Grey and Deep Blue. The phone is tipped to feature a new and improved S Pen along with a force touch display.

    While Samsung is prepping the Launch of the Galaxy Note 8, it appears the company may not have much to launch as a new leak showcases the phone in all its glory. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8  is pretty much a sneak image compilation from on of Samsung’s pre-launch briefings the company holds with media and partners.

    The images show the Galaxy Note 8 in the Midnight Black colour variant and the pre-setup of the ‘always on’ feature which is common for Samsung devices. Although the images are not of the highest quality, it’s as good as it gets when it comes to leaks. The virtual home button is also visible in one of the images with the display layout much like the Samsung Galaxy S8+.

    The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be the first Samsung phone to feature a dual-camera setup and these images confirm that as well. As expected, the fingerprint sensor sits beside the dual-camera and the phone is reminiscent of the Note series in terms of the build. The Galaxy Note 8 shown in the images has a square-ish body unlike the Galaxy S8 and S8+ with Samsung’s signature curved edge display on top. The leaked images are a pretty good look at the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 and the date on the phone suggests that it was captured recently.

    Samsung Has Shipped Over 20 Million Galaxy S8 Units

    Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ was launched back in April and received rave reviews for its display and camera performance. And now, a report by market research firm, suggests that Samsung has already shipped over 20 million units of the Galaxy S8/S8+ since its launch.

    While we eagerly await the launch of the Galaxy Note 8, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ aren’t faring too bad in the market even after three-and-a-half months post their launch.  The reported 20 million+ units shipped so far, translates to about 2,78,000 units per day, since April 21st. Compared to Samsung’s shipping volume of last year’s Galaxy S7, the company’s Mobile Division Chief, Koh Dong-Jin, says that S8 shipments have increased by approximately 15% in comparison to the S7 shipments sent out in 2016.

    This news follows another report that claimed that Samsung had shipped a total of 79 million smartphone units in Q2 of 2017. This figure helped Samsung maintain its spot as the number one smartphone maker in the world. Huawei will be vying for the second spot which currently belongs to Apple. With the launch of the Galaxy Note 8 just a few days away, Samsung looks all set to solidify its top position.

    Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ was extremely well-received for its bezel-less curved edge display and superior camera quality. It launched with top-of-the-line specifications like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset along with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. Samsung decided to go with a single 12MP camera with an f/1.7 aperture. The improved performance of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI was a welcome change which ran on top Android Nougat 7.1.

    Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ launched earlier this year to great reviews for its great display and camera performance. Though the devices were dubbed as the phones to beat in 2017, not all was rosy in the Samsung world. Samsung received a lot of flak for the awkward placement of the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. And according to KGI, the Galaxy S9 may be no different from its predecessors.

    KGI has reported that the Galaxy S9, which is expected to release next year, will feature the same rear placed fingerprint sensor, while the Galaxy Note 9 will feature a screen embedded fingerprint sensor. The news of Samsung going with a similar fingerprint sensor setup as the S8 may be a little disappointing, but it doesn’t that mean that Samsung can’t change its placement to a little more ergonomic location.

    The news of the Galaxy Note 9 featuring a screen embedded fingerprint sensor is a welcome one for consumers. Reports have suggested that since Apple dropped the technology for its upcoming iPhone 8, Samsung is not willing to risk the nascent technology in its Galaxy S9 either. It will, in fact, launch the Note 9 later in 2018 with the screen embedded fingerprint sensor. Samsung believes that the Galaxy S9 will have enough new features likes an improved iris scanner, dual-cameras etc. to become a hot-seller, come 2018. Hence, it can afford to preserve the screen embedded sensor for its fall release.

    Although the Galaxy Note 9 will be revealed as the first Samsung smartphone to carry screen embedded technology, it is worth noting that the screen embedded sensors will cost 4-5 times more than the previously employed fingerprint sensors. Samsung will also switch from Synaptics to Egis at the time of the Note’s release to supply the company with fingerprint sensors on the Galaxy Note 9.

    Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note 8 on August 23 and although the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 are far from its release, these reports suggest that the 2018 flagships have some interesting features in store for the consumers.

    Samsung OLED Production Lines For iPhone 8 Ramping Up To Full Capacity

    As the launch of the iPhone 8 approaches, a new report suggests that Apple is claiming almost one third of Samsung’s OLED displays for the upcoming iPhone 8’s screens.

    Samsung has reportedly geared up to operate seven of its next-generation OLED production lines at full capacity, all of which are dedicated to Apple and the iPhone 8. By ramping up their scale of production, Samsung Display, a unit of Samsung, is now able to manufacture about 45,000 panels a month for OLED displays, out of which 15,000 of them are allegedly reserved for Apple.

    Samsung Display being the only supplier of the Apple iPhone 8’s OLED screens, the manufacturer, is said to further increase the production from 15,000 panels per month for Apple to 105,000 panels per month. The report says that full-scale production will begin later this month, with output capacity increasing by 700%.

    At this rate and capacity, Samsung Display facilities are expected to yield approximately 130 million 5.8-inch screens per year. However, due to Apple’s specific requests, which involve “high degree of technical difficulty”, the actual production may decrease to 60% (which will amount to about 79 million displays for Apple iPhone 8).

    Subsequently, the current reports of Samsung facing technical challenges during OLED display manufacturer for its future iPhones, seem to validate the rumours of production delays for the next iPhone, potentially leading to a limited iPhone 8 launch.

    Though Samsung is currently reported to be the sole supplier of the OLED displays for the iPhone 8, it might not be the case for long. Apple seems to be already on a hunt for a new OLED display supplier for its future iPhones.

    Recent announcements of Apple investing  $2.7 billion in LG Display to help set up new OLED production lines dedicated for the future iPhones seems a little less than promising for Samsung. Subsequently, LG is also planning to invest $13 billion in OLED production over the next three years in order to continue its dominance in the OLED TV screen market. The company hopes to “make inroads against rival Samsung in smartphone displays.” Irrespective, Samsung is building the world’s largest OLED production plant in hopes of getting future Apple orders.

    In order to continue being the flag-bearer of flip smartphones, Samsung has announced the new Leader 8 in the Chinese market. The new device will succeed last year’s SM-W2017 as the Samsung flagship flip phone for 2017. The Leader 8 was announced on Samsung’s website along with all the specifications.

    4.2″ Super AMOLED Internal and External Panels

     

    The flip smartphone, codenamed SM-G9298 packs two 4.2-inch Super AMOLED display panels with a 1920 x 1080 px resolution, one on the outside of the device and one inside. The Leader 8 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset along with 4GB RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, expandable up to 256GB. Samsung has decided to go with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset this time around unlike last year’s Exynos Chipset in the SM-W2017. The Leader 8 has a 2,300mAH battery with wireless charging capabilities. Among other features, Samsung has also packed in Samsung Pay, a digital wallet for mobile payment.

    12MP Rear-Facing Camera, Fingerprint Sensor and Heart-rate Sensor

    On the camera front, it houses a 12 MP rear-facing camera with an f/1.7 aperture for better low-light performance and a 5 MP front-facing camera with an f/1.9 aperture. The rear facing camera records 3840 x 2160 px video at 30fps and supports autofocus. There is no mention of OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) in Samsung’s announcement post. The fingerprint sensor sits just below the rear camera along with Samsung’s standard heart rate sensor.

    A flip smartphone in the era of bezel-less sleek phones is a different move from Samsung, but it has identified an audience for new-age flip phones. The specifications of the Leader 8 will hold up against many smartphones of 2017. Details of pricing and the availability of the phone have not been shared by Samsung yet. This puts a question mark on whether this device will be made available for international markets.

    Samsung is gearing up for the launch of its 8th gen Note device, the Galaxy Note 8 on August 23rd. After the debacle of the Note 7, Samsung is relying heavily on the performance of its new device to keep the Note series up and kicking in the highly competitive smartphone market. A new leak has given us all the detailed specifications of the Galaxy Note 8.

    The Galaxy Note 8 will feature a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED 2960 x1440 px display in an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, much like the Galaxy S8 and S8+. In fact, the 6.3-inch display is barely larger than that on the S8+, but as is with every Note phone, the device will have a more square-ish look. Samsung will also ship the Note 8 in two variants, one with the Exynos 8895 Chipset and the other one with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and will feature 6GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage which will be expandable via a microSD card. The device will run on a 3,300mAh battery with Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 3.0 via a USB Type C port along with wireless charging capabilities.

    On the camera front is where the Note 8 will make headlines with a 12MP dual-camera setup, featuring on a Samsung phone for the first time. The primary, wide-angle camera will have an f/1.7 aperture and dual-pixel autofocus, while the telephoto lens will have an f/2.4 aperture and will enable a 2x optical zoom. The presence of OIS means that the 4K video recording will be stable and low-light images will have less noise. The front-facing selfie snapper will be an 8MP camera with an f/1.7 aperture. The fingerprint sensor will still be placed at the back of the device next to the cameras. It seems that we won’t see a screen embedded fingerprint sensor this year either.

    Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Midnight Black Colour Image Leaked

    Samsung’s flagship device of the year, the Galaxy Note 8 is all set for launch on August 23. Earlier this month, Samsung sent out press invites for the official unveiling of the Galaxy Note 8. The invite carried an image featuring an outline of a device with an Infinity Display, thin bezels on the top and bottom and a stylus.

    The invite just offered a glimpse of the Galaxy Note 8 silhouette, but a recent tweet has revealed the smartphone in its “Midnight Black”color variant.

    The Galaxy Note 8 is expected to feature a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED curved infinity display with a 4k resolution, the smartphone is expected to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset.  The Galaxy Note 8 will run Android 7.1 with a massive 6GB RAM and 64GB on board storage.

    The smartphone is said to feature a horizontally placed dual rear camera set up. Each sensor is expected to be a 12MP, while one will provide 3X optical zoom for a close-up shot. The dual cameras will enable brighter low-light shots when used in tandem, along with the other features like background effect (to blur the all but the subject of a shot), perspective view (which tilts the image based on how you rotate your phone) and a depth-of-field effect.

    Samsung seems to be opting for a 3,300mAh battery pack for the Galaxy Note 8 which is slightly smaller in comparison to last year’s Galaxy Note 7 which had a 3500mAh battery. The decision of installing a smaller battery might be a smart one, considering the last years battery failures.

    Given last year’s Note 7 recall, and the damage it did to the brand, Samsung is under pressure to deliver a smartphone that could win back the customer’s trust and re-establish the Galaxy Note name in the Smartphone market.

    Samsung SM-G9298 High-End Flip Smartphone Leaks

    Samsung seems to have a thing for flip phones, the company is reportedly following up last year’s SM-W2017 with another top-end flip phone in 2017. While everyone seems to be focused on the Galaxy Note 8 new press renders leaked suggest that the, Chinese market-only, flagship flip phone, called SM-G9298 will sport all the high-end specifications you expect from a flagship.

    The phone is expected to sport a 4.2-inch full HD display and a relatively small 2,300 mAh battery. It will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and 6GB of RAM. It will ship with 64GB of onboard storage and a 12-megapixel rear camera with OIS. The images leaked show an old-school clamshell design. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back of the device along with the camera. The images do not show the secondary display which will be accessible once you flip open the phone. All-round specifications are not yet available for the phone but from whatever we’ve seen so far, it will be a premium smartphone for people who are still in love with flip phones.

    Despite The Note 7 Recall, Samsung Posts Massive $12.5 Billion Profit

    The South Korean electronics giant, Samsung, has posted a record quarterly profit despite being plagued by scandals in the recent past.

    The recall of their 2016 flagship, the Galaxy Note 7, and the prosecution of de facto leader Jay Y. Lee on bribery charges, didn’t stop Samsung from raking in a record US $54.8 billion in quarterly revenue and an operating profit of US $12.5 billion. Revenue figure rose by 20 per cent year-on-year but net-profit rose by a staggering 89 per cent in the last quarter! A lot of the credit has to go the strong sales of their Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices and their component businesses.

    Back in 2016, Samsung blew us away with their best smart phone till yet, the Galaxy Note 7. Widely regarded as the smartphone to beat, it garnered rave reviews and restored the Note series as a premium smartphone line-up. However, the fame was short-lived as reports of the Galaxy Note 7 batteries failing and catching fire started surfacing and it soon became a worldwide top news. Samsung guaranteed replacements for people who reported this incident in the beginning. But come October 2016, Samsung announced that they’re discontinuing the Galaxy Note 7 and recalling all the devices in the market. A report estimated that the recall of the Galaxy Note 7 cost the company upwards of US $17 billion.

    Early 2017, Samsung’s Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee was arrested on corruption charges. He was accused of bribing an advisor of Hong Kong’s then President Park Geun-hye in exchange for political favours. It was reported that he had paid close Us $36 million to the advisor in order to win government support for a merger between two Samsung subsidiaries. Jay Y. Lee, son of current chairman Kun-Hee Lee is considered to be the heir to the Samsung empire was also prosecuted back in January. However, his arrest was rejected by a court a few days later.

    In 2016, Samsung acquired Harman for a record $8 billion, their most expensive acquisition yet. Samsung then posted that Harman garnered a sales revenue of $1.9 billion with an operating profit of $200 million. However, factoring the cost of acquisition, the profit comes down $5 million and Samsung has said that the acquisition will likely affect Harman’s business for the next few quarters.

    Samsung has, however, warned that the rising price of components has eaten into its profit. Factoring the marketing cost for their soon-to-launch Note 8 will have an effect on the profit. And now that the Galaxy S8 and its bigger sibling the Galaxy S8+ are out of the rosy “post-launch period”, the sales will consequentially decrease.

    Samsung Galaxy Note 8 To Launch August 23rd

    Samsung has finally made it official that the Galaxy Note 8 will be launched at 11 a.m. ET on the 23rd of August in New York’s Park Avenue Armory.

    Samsung sent out the press invites and made the announcement that the Unpacked event would focus on “Samsung’s newest mobile device.” The invitation teaser shows an image with the silhouette of a device with an Infinity Display (similar to the one featured on the Galaxy S8) and thin bezels on the top and bottom. The S-Pen-like stylus in the teaser is also a big giveaway.

    Though the name “Note 8” was to be seen nowhere on the unpacked event invitation, it was quite obvious from the “Do Bigger Things” and the outline of a phone.

     

    The Galaxy Note 8 is said to feature a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED curved infinity display, a Snapdragon 835 a massive 6GB RAM with 64GB on board storage. The device is also rumoured to have horizontally placed dual cameras, which are expected to be 12MP.

    The Unpacked event is extremely important for the company, considering the last year’s Galaxy Note 7 lineup was recalled thanks to faulty batteries. While Samsung has been extra cautious and playing it safe all this time, the last year’s recall of the Note 7 handsets still has the company dealing with losses in excess of US$ 5 billion.

    Samsung was also recently reported to recycle the recalled Galaxy Note 7 devices as the Note FE and salvage about 157 tons of rare metal like gold, cobalt and copper. By staying true to its promise of recycling faulty devices, the company has earned much appreciation.

    Samsung also regained consumer trust with the introduction of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus in March. None of the devices have had any battery related troubles since they went up for sale. The launch of the Galaxy Note 8 will be a major milestone for the company.

    Samsung Bixby’s Voice Is Ready For Showtime

    With the markets flooded with the likes of Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa etc. Samsung’s Bixby is the latest to join the mixer. The company recently announced that the voice support of its smart assistant is out in US, available to Galaxy S8 and S8+ owners. Samsung states that an opt-in Beta test in US on Bixby’s voice support which will be later available in other markets and an eventual release in India. Over 100,000 Galaxy users issued about 4 million voice commands in the early access programs. The test led to faster response time, improved understanding of phrasing the same query differently, better hands-free functionality and ability to read messages and emails aloud, provided you use its stock apps on Galaxy S8.

    Similar to its competitors, Bixby can be launched with a push of a button (dedicate to Bixby) on the side of S8 or S8+ or by simply saying “Hi Bixby”. Very much like Siri, Google Assistant and the likes, Bixby can set alarms, send messages, read the news along with image recognition and barcode scanning. But what sets it aside from its contendors is the ability to access the granular phone setting and switch between different menu screens to run commands.

     

    Samsung had earlier planned on making Bixby more aware of the user’s wants and needs, as to customize the user experience. Samsung believes that Bixby will gradually improve as it continues to recognise and learn user’s preferences and adapt accordingly. Choosing not to limit itself to smartphones, Samsung also added Bixby to its line of smart refrigerators last month though without voice support for now.
