Google Launches The Pixelbook For US$999

Google has launched a new iteration of its laptop lineup, the Pixelbook. The Pixelbook has a touch sensitive screen and can be converted into a tablet. Google has introduced a stylus as well called the Pixel Pen. The Pixelbook will also be powered by Google Assistant. Google Play Store will also be compatible with Pixelbook, meaning you can have your favourite Android apps on your laptop. The new Pixelbook starts at a price of US$999 and the Pixel Pen will retail for US$99.

Pixelbook is the thinnest and lightest laptop we’ve ever made.

The Pixelbook has a 12.3 inch 2400 x 1600 (235 ppi) Quad HD LCD display which is touch sensitive and support for the new Pixel Pen. Under the hood, the Pixelbook has the 7th generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM and three storage options of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. The Pixelbook can be charged using a USB Type C cable and supports fast charging. Powering the device is a 41 Whr battery which gives a usage time of up to 10 hours. It also has a dedicated Google Assistant key to the left of the space bar. The Pixelbook weighs 1.1kg and is available in one colour variant only. The design is inspired by the Pixel phones with a two-tone colour at the back.

The keyboard on the Pixelbook has backlit keys and a travel distance of 0.8mm. A new smart feature introduced by Google is that if the Pixelbook is out of WiFi coverage, it automatically connects to your Pixel phone.

Google Launches The Pixel 2 XL For US$849

Google has finally unveiled the new Pixel 2 XL during its launch event. The Pixel 2 XL is priced at Rs 73000 for the 64GB variant. Google will also bundle a Google Home Mini with every order of a Pixel 2 XL for a limited time.

The Pixel 2 XL has a design similar to the Pixel 2 with a glass window at the back and the placement of the fingerprint sensor at the back is the same as well. The smartphone has a 6 inch 2880 x 1440 px POLED display which translates into an 18:9 aspect ratio. Protecting the display is Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Just like the Pixel 2, the device runs Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and will receive the Android P update in 2018. Powering the device is a 3520 mAh battery which is larger than the one found in the Pixel 2. Under the hood, the Pixel 2 XL has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, 2.4GHz octa core processor, Adreno 540, 4GB RAM and 64GB/128GB onboard storage. The fingerprint sensor sits at the back of the device but, this time around the “glass window” is smaller.

A new addition is front-firing dual stereo speakers. The big omission is the much talked about 3.5 headphone jack. The Pixel 2 XL also has an always on display for better accessibility. Another feature is the Active Edge feature which lets you squeeze the frame of the phone to launch the Google Assistant. Google has also made some minor changes to the phone’s home screen. The most notable change is that there’s now a search box at the very bottom of the screen. Up top, there’s now an “at a glance” widget, which displays your upcoming meetings, as well as the date and temperature.

On the camera front, Google has decided to go for a single camera setup similar to last year’s Pixel phones. The rear-facing camera is a 12.2 MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and 1.4 micron pixel size. On the front is an 8MP camera with an f/2.4 aperture. Google has introduced new features in the camera department like the addition of AR. You’ll be able to add 3D characters and emoji into photos and videos and see them move around as you’re capturing the scene. That includes things like a sleepy coffee cup, but also some recognisable characters. Google is going to be partnering with third parties to add in some famous faces. DXOmark has given the cameras of the Pixel 2 XL a score of 98, highest ever for a smartphone. Google says Pixel 2 XL has greater high dynamic range, optical image stabilisation, and a portrait mode that doesn’t use a second camera but dual-sensor image technology. The Pixel 2 XL uses both OIS and EIS simultaneously for better clarity and stable images and videos.

The Pixel 2 XL will be available online on Flipkart exclusively and at select offline retail outlets. As far as pricing is concerned, the Pixel 2 64GB is priced at Rs 61,000, the 128GB variant at Rs 70,000, the Pixel 2 XL 64GB is priced at Rs 73,000, and the 128GB at Rs 82,000. Pre-orders in India begin from 26th October 2017, the Pixel 2 will be available for sale from November 1 and the Pixel 2 XL from 15th November.

Following the design language of last year’s Pixel phones, the smartphone features a 5 inch 1920 x 1080 px OLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top for protection. Powering the device is a 2700 mAh battery and it runs Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. As is with with every Google phone, the new Pixel 2 will be first in line to receive Android P update in 2018. Under the hood, the device has typical 2017 flagship specifications. It has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, 2.4GHz octa core processor, Adreno 540, 4GB RAM and 64GB/128GB onboard storage. The fingerprint sensor sits at the back of the device but, this time around the “glass window” is smaller. The two-tone colour of the phone is also reminiscent of the original Pixel from 2016. Google claims that the fingerprint sensor is the fastest on a smartphone. The Pixel 2 is water resistant as well.

Google Launches The Google Max For US$399

After the announcement of a small speaker focussed more on AI, Google has launched the Google Max smart speaker. The Google Max will focus a lot on bass and the company claims it is 20 times louder than Google Home.

Google Max will concentrate on “smart sound.” For example, if the speaker is near a wall or on a shelf, it sounds different. Google is automatically tuning it. “This is all done dynamically” and it can change sound automatically. Google Max supports YouTube Music, Spotify and all other major music streaming services. The Google Max is also powered by Google Assistant and can recognise your voice even if the music is playing loudly thanks to a smart mic placed in the speaker. Home Max has two 4.5 inch woofers with tweeters covered by a fabric speaker grill. It features touch controls, supports Bluetooth as well as Google Cast and has a 3.5mm audio jack.

Just like Apple’s HomePod, the Home Max can tune itself for the room it’s placed in using a machine learning feature called Smart Sound. Google says Smart Sound can tune the Home Max for the audio you’re listening to, be it a song, podcast, or a phone call.

The Google Max will be available in the US in December for a price of US$399 and will be available in two colour variants. It will make its way to other countries in early 2018.

Google Launches The Google Home Mini For US$49

Sundar Pichai took to stage during the Google launch event on 4th October and talked about the importance of AI in the future of technology. Google has launched a new iteration of Google’s smart speaker, the Home Mini. The Google Home Mini will compete with Amazon Echo Dot in the market of mini smart speakers. The Google Home Mini is designed to fit into the aesthetics of your home with a circular shape. The speaker will be available in Coral, Charcoal and Chalk. To make the competition with Amazon Echo Dot even, the smart speaker will be available for US$49.

The Home Mini has a 360-degree sound stage. For more sound, the Google Home Mini can be connected with a different speaker. Google Home Mini is powered by Google Assistant and has the intelligence to differentiate the voice of different people in the house and perform actions based on the voice.

Google has partnered with Disney to bring Disney originals to the experience of Google Home. This is done in the bid to improve the interaction of Google Assistant with kids.

The Google Home Mini can perform a series of tasks with one command. it can find your phone even if it is on silent by a simple “find my phone” command.

The Google Home Mini will be available to pre-order from 4th October.

Alexa Powered Amazon Echo, Echo Dot And Echo Plus Launched In India

Earlier in the month of September, it was reported that Amazon will be launching its Prime Music services and Amazon Echo Dot in India. Now, Amazon has launched three smart speakers from its global lineup in India at a starting price of Rs 4499. In order to purchase any of the devices, customers need to request an invitation on Amazon’s official listing for the three devices namely, the Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Plus. The company also announced that it will soon be launching its Prime Music service in India.

Bringing voice assistants to India is always tricky because of the diversity of accents from one part of the country to another. Amazon claims that Alexa has been customised for the Indian audience, which now supports local pronunciations and intonation. Alexa also supports local music titles, names and places. Amazon claims that it brought in Indian developers to optimise Alexa for the Indian consumers.

During the launch, the company said in a statement:

10,000 skills will be available for customers in India, including skills from Saavn, Times of India, ESPNcricinfo, Ola, Freshmenu, and more. Tens of millions of customers are already using Alexa, and today we’re excited to bring her to India with an all-new experience designed from the ground up for our customers in India,” said Dave Limp, senior vice president, Amazon Devices and Services. The combination of Alexa and Echo provides customers with hands-free access to music, weather, news, information, and more—just ask.

Echo Plus

Priced at Rs 14999, the Echo Plus is the most expensive of the three smart speakers released on Wednesday in India. It is about the same size as the original Echo from 2014 but, also acts as a smart home hub with second-generation far-field voice recognition and enhanced sound. The Echo Plus uses Zigbee as a low-power way to extend its wireless range and can control more than 100 smart home devices in the market via voice, without any apps required. The device measures 83.5 x 83.5 x 32 mm and weighs 163 grams. The Echo Plus will scan the room for smart devices and set it up automatically. There is a new Alexa feature which was demonstrated during the Amazon hardware show which was the series of tasks that can be triggered with a simple phrases. The Echo Plus, once set up and connected to all the smart devices in your home can open the blinders, start the coffee machine and tell the weather by just saying “Good Morning Alexa.”

Amazon Echo

At the Amazon Hardware show, the company also launched a new refreshed version of the Amazon Echo of 2014. In India, it is priced at Rs 9999 and will be available in a host of different finishes like wood and cloth. It is a smart speaker and does things at your (voice) command like book an Uber, place an order on Zomato or play your favourite playlist from Saavn. The device measures 148.5 x 88 x 88 mm and weighs 821 grams. It features 2.5-inch woofer and 0.6-inch bass tweeter.

Amazon Echo Dot

The Amazon Echo Dot is priced at Rs 4499 in India and is also the smallest sibling and has all the functionalities that an Echo possessed but, with a lower sound quality. The device measures 83.5 x 83.5 x 32 mm and weighs 163 grams. A good thing about the Echo Dot is that it can be connected to other speakers for a better soundstage and still retain its core ‘smart’ features.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 To Launch In India On October 10th

Xiaomi launched the second iteration of its 2016 bezel-less flagship, the Mi Mix 2 globally on 11th September. Now, country head of Xiaomi India, Manu Jain took to twitter to announce that the Mi Mix 2 will be launched in India on October 10th. The Mi Mix 2 was launched in China at a starting price of CNY 3,299 (Rs. 32,000 approx.) The Mi Mix 2 will be the first of the Mix lineup to be launched in India.

While the Mi Mix had a 6.4-inch display with a 17:9 aspect ratio, the new Mi Mix 2 has a 5.99 inch 2160 x 1080 px LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The Mi Mix 2 has a 12% reduced bottom bezel and a screen-to-body ratio of 80.8%. The device features a cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic speaker and ultrasonic proximity sensor. The device is powered by a 3,400 mAh battery which is considerably smaller than the previous generation Mix’s 4,400 mAh battery. The Mi Mix 2 runs Android 7.1.1 with Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 9 on top. Under the hood, the flagship smartphone has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, Adreno 540 GPU, 6GB RAM and storage options of 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. A special edition Mi Mix 2 with a full ceramic body, 8GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage has also been announced. The onboard storage will not be expandable due to the absence of a microSD card slot. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back of the device just below the camera.

On the optics front, the Mi Mix 2 has a very unlike-2017 flagship single camera setup at the back. The smartphone sports a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor with 1.25-micron pixels, an f/2.0 aperture 4-axis optical image stabilisation, 5-piece lens, and facial recognition. On the front is a 5MP which features facial recognition as well.

As far as pricing is concerned, the 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant is priced at CNY 3,299 (Rs. 32,000 approx.). The 6GB RAM/128GB variant will cost CNY 3,599 (Rs. 35,300 approx.) and the 6GB/256GB variant will be priced at CNY 3,999 (Rs. 39,200 approx.) The special edition full ceramic body variant with 8GB RAM/128GB storage is priced at CNY 4,699 (Rs. 46,000 approx.). There is no word on the price of the Mi Mix 2 in India.

Honor 9 To Be Launched In India On October 5th

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor is expected to launch the Honor 9 in India on October 5th. The company revealed the launch plans while replying to someone on Twitter. Flipkart also announced that the phone will be a Flipkart exclusive device however, it didn’t confirm the name of the smartphone.

The Honor 9 has a 5.1 inch 1920 x 1080 px display. Powering the device is a 3200 mAh battery and runs Android 7.1 Nougat with Honor’s custom EMUI 5.1 on top. Under the hood, the Honor 9 has the HiSilicon Kirin 960, an octa-core processor, Mali-G71 MP8. The smartphone was launched in three variants – 4GB RAM/64GB onboard storage, 6GB RAM/64GB onboard storage and 6GB RAM/128GB storage. The fingerprint sensor is housed inside the home button just below the display.

On the optics front, the camera has a dual-camera setup at the back. The primary 20MP camera has a monochrome sensor and the secondary 12MP has an RGB sensor equipped with 2X lossless zoom. The lossless zoom allows users to click bokeh effect images. On the front is an 8MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

In China, the phone was launched for 2299 Yuan (Rs 23000 approx.) for the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant. It is not yet clear as to which variant will be launched in India and what the price will be when it is launched.

Google Launch Event Is Less Than 10 Hours Away – What To Expect

The 4th October launch event by Google is just a few hours away and the anticipation is increasing with every passing minute. Apart from the new Pixel devices, there are a few other products that might be unveiled by Google today.

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

The two new smartphones have been leaked for a while now and a lot of information about the phones is more or less clear. The Pixel 2 is expected to have similar thick bezels as the Pixel from 2016. The Pixel 2 XL will have a more 2017 flagship design with thin bezels and the recent leaks reveal a design very similar to the LG G6, which is possible considering LG is making the Pixel 2 XL for Google this time around. There is also an omission of the 3.5mm headphone jack and addition of front firing stereo speakers.

Google Home Mini

This has been rumoured as well ever since the Amazon Echo Dot released. The smaller sibling of the Google Home will compete with Amazon Echo Dot and will be powered by the Google Assistant. The smart speaker will be available in Chalk, Charcoal, and Coral colours. The Home Mini will be priced at US$49 (Rs 3200 approx.).

New Daydream VR

The Daydream VR headset will be the second iteration of the wearable product by Google. Just like the Pixebook, no specific details have been revealed by the website. The colour variants, however, have been revealed and the Daydream VR will be available in Charcoal, Fog, and Coral colours. Just like the previous generation, a remote controller can be seen alongside the new generation VR headset in leaked images. The new wearable will reportedly cost US$99 (Rs. 6,400 approx.).

Pixelbook

The Google Pixelbook succeeds last year’s Chromebook Pixel. The laptop will be another high-end offering by Google and will be the first iteration that can be folded into a tablet. the Pixelbook will be accompanied by a pressure-sensitive stylus called the Pixebook Pen. No other details about the laptop have been revealed other than the storage variants and their prices. The 128GB base variant will be priced at US$1199 (Rs. 77,200 approx.), while the 256GB and 512GB variants are expected to be priced at US$1399 (Rs. 90,000 approx.), and US$1749 (Rs. 1.12 lakhs approx.) respectively.

Honor Holly 4 Launched In India

Honor has launched the Holly 4 in India and is targeted at the offline consumer market.

The Holly 4 has a 5 inch 1280 x 720 px display. Powering the device is a 3020 mAh battery and it runs Android 7.1 Nougat with Honor’s custom EMUI 5.1 on top. Under the hood, the device has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset, 1.4GHz octa-core processor, 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage. The onboard storage can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. The fingerprint sensor sits at the back of the device just below the camera and flash. At the front of the device, there are no buttons, meaning the phone will have onscreen navigation buttons.

In terms of optics, the smartphone has a rear-facing 13MP camera with dual-LED flash and PDAF. The front of the device houses a 5MP camera.

The Holly 4 is priced at Rs 11999 in India and will be available offline only in three colour variants – Black, Gold and Silver. Honor has launched the device in the festive season to give consumers another option in the budget smartphone category. If the recent Amazon and Flipkart sales are anything to go by, it is certain that Indians like buying smartphones during the festive season. P Sanjeev, Vice President – Sales, Huawei Consumer Business Group India, commented on the launch:

Holly 4 is part of our festive offering to consumers wanting to buy a great device in a budget. Sporting a sleek, elegant metallic design with a fast fingerprint sensor we are confident that this smartphone will be a big winner.

The Holly 4 will be up against the likes Of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Lenovo K8 Note, Lenovo K8 Plus and even the Moto G5 Plus in the budget category. With its concentration solely on the offline market, it will be interesting to see how the Honor Holly 4 performs with the festivities at bay.

Samsung May Not Feel All that Bad If The iPhone X Is A Success

Samsung and Apple may be rivals in the smartphone domain but, Samsung has always manufactures key components of the iPhone including the displays. And it looks like with the iPhone X, Samsung is poised to make a lot of money. Studying the costs of the components Samsung has made for the iPhone X, it reveals that the South Korean tech giant will earn about US$110 for every iPhone X sold.

A market research study conducted for the Wall Street Journal says that Samsung also makes batteries and capacitors for the flagship iPhone X. The highest-profile Samsung component in the iPhone X is also the most expensive, the new OLED screen. This is a custom-made display built to Apple’s specifications. The analysis reports states:

Samsung is likely to earn about $4 billion more in revenue making parts for the iPhone X than from the parts it makes for its own flagship Galaxy S8 handset. Counterpoint expects Apple will sell 130 million iPhone X units, earning Samsung $110 on each through the summer of 2019, while Galaxy S8’s global sales are expected to be 50 million, earning Samsung $202 each from components such as displays and chips in its first 20 months of sales.

The analysis, even though notes the irony is not a fair comparison. The research notes the profit Samsung’s component division makes for the Galaxy S8 but, not the mobile division makes for Galaxy S8 sold. Samsung obviously makes more money by selling its own smartphone because it makes more components for it but, since the iPhone X is expected to sell in far higher volumes, the total value of component sales will be higher for the iPhone. A report by investment bank CLSA estimated that Apple’s component orders make up more than a third of Samsung’s revenue. Oh, the irony.
