  • Google And Huawei To Pay $400 To Each Nexus 6P Owner For Bootloop Issues

Google And Huawei To Pay $400 To Each Nexus 6P Owner For Bootloop Issues

Google released the last smartphones in the Nexus lineup, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X in the year 2015. While the latter was made in collaboration with LG, the former was produced as a result of Google’s partnership with Huawei. Both the handsets, while offering a clean software and capable hardware had their fair share of problems. Among them, the most prevalent one was bootloop issues. This made the devices restart randomly regardless of the battery percentage and sometimes would get stuck in an infinite restart loop.

    Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P

A lawsuit filed in the year 2017 alleged the issue of the bootloops was known by the manufacturers and wasn’t fixed knowingly. As a result, Google and Huawei have been directed by the court to pay $9.75 million as a settlement fee to the owners of the Nexus 6P. This results in payments of up to US$400 (Rs. 27,600) for participating plaintiffs.

    About The Case

In a lawsuit filed in April 2017 by owners of the Nexus 6P who claimed Google and Huawei breached the warranty on the smartphone. It further stated the companies were fully aware of the issue but failed to fully respond to it and continued to sell the device. While the settlement has been directed, it is expected to be approved at the next court hearing, scheduled to take place on May 9. Notably, the amount will be available for owners who purchased the Nexus 6P after September 25, 2015.

Furthermore, the users of the Nexus 6P smartphone who weren’t part of the lawsuit may still be eligible for a settlement amount. They would need to submit proper documentation of the issues and will get at least US$ 10 (Rs. 700), leading to a maximum amount of US$ 75 (Rs. 5,200). Interestingly, a similar lawsuit was filed against LG for bootloop issues in its G4, V10, V20, Nexus 5X and G5 smartphones, wherein it was directed to pay US$ 425 (Rs. 29,400) per owner or US$ 700 (Rs. 48,400) in discounts.

In terms of design, the new Porsche 911 duo is reminiscent of their predecessors with a significantly wider wheel housing arch over the front and the rear wheels. Except for the front and rear sections, the entire outer shell of the vehicle is now made from aluminium. The interiors of the car have also been completely redesigned, with recessed instruments. Adjacent to the iconic central rev counter, two frameless displays provide information to the driver. The central screen measures 10.9-inch diagonally and allow for easy operation by the driver. The new seats reduce the weight of the Porsche 911 by 3 kg and offer better lateral support to the shoulders.

Additional features of the new Porsche 911 include increased stability, traction and balance while driving the sports cars. The new chassis design is provided by the in house developed Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). The Cabriolet S has a new, lighter hydraulic roof drive which allows the convertible top to be opened and closed in 12 seconds respectively. • Sharp Showcases A Unique Clamshell Style Foldable Smartphone

Sharp Showcases A Unique Clamshell Style Foldable Smartphone

The biggest and the most prevalent trend for this year is expected to be the advent of foldable smartphones. Smartphone OEMs like Samsung and Huawei have already showcased their devices with the technology. Japanese multinational giant Sharp has also joined the bandwagon and revealed a clamshell style foldable smartphone in a video. This is the first time the technology has been exhibited.

    Sharp Clamshell Foldable Smartphone

The clamshell foldable smartphone from Sharp that has been showcased in the video features a similar design to the expected Motorola RAZR foldable smartphone leaked a few days ago. It has a Plastic OLED display which can be folded completely into half to turn the device into a more compact form factor. It has a wide notch on top of the display which is surprising to see in a foldable smartphone. Its mechanism uses strong magnets to keep the display securely shut when in the folded state. To reaffirm the durability claims, Sharp has assured it has tested the folding mechanism for up to 3,00,000 bends. Notably, this number is significantly higher than the durability claims of Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Unfortunately, Sharp hasn’t provided any specific launch date for a commercial smartphone featuring a clamshell, foldable design. According to the company, it may take years before a device featuring the technology may be released by it. However, Sharp is also a display manufacturer, so there may be a possibility that it may sell this technology to other OEMs to implement in separate devices. The video also doesn’t clarify if the display when folded time and again, will create a crease in the centre or not. Furthermore, the sound of the folding mechanism is also prevalent throughout the video, which may make the experience of using the smartphone cumbersome.

Research Claims Most Pixel And OnePlus Buyers Are Former Samsung Smartphone Owners

Google first launched its Pixel lineup of smartphones in the year 2016. The devices were targeted at the premium segment and were intended to lure the buyers of the Apple iPhones. Like the latter, Google handsets promised a clean, software experience with reliable hardware integration and optimisation. While the Pixel smartphones have reached their third iteration with the Pixel 3/3 XL last year, their original goal still seems far fetched. In a fresh report by known research organization Counterpoint, it is claimed the major Pixel and OnePlus smartphone buyers are former users of Samsung devices.

    The Results Of The Research

The aforementioned research was conducted by Counterpoint in the US during Q4 of the year 2018. Smartphones that the study was administered on were the Pixel 3 duo and the OnePlus 6T. The results of the research showed almost 51 percent users of the aforementioned Pixel devices were former users of Samsung smartphones. On the other hand, around 37 percent of OnePlus 6T users are past users of Samsung devices. This was followed by former Apple smartphone users in both cases with an 18 and 16 percent share respectively. It is further followed by Motorola by a 14 percent stake in case of the Pixel; and LG by a 15 percent share in case of OnePlus.

Interestingly, both the Pixel and OnePlus smartphones represent a different price segment. While the former is priced at a premium, the latter is a more affordable flagship handset. The research notes that the aggressive marketing strategy adopted by Google and the affordability of OnePlus handsets is the major reason behind the above results. Samsung smartphones have also always been rated behind the above-mentioned devices in terms of software experience. Notably, the main competition of Google, as mentioned above is Apple, whose users still hold an 18 per cent share in terms of switching to a Pixel handset. Therefore, in the case of both the OEMs, the share of former Android users is more than 80 percent.
