Specs of Motorola Made Nexus 6 ‘Shamu’ Leaked

Amidst all the confusion about the future of the Nexus line of products, comes a fresh new rumor about the next Nexus smartphone. This time it seems that Motorola is going to be taking the responsibility of crafting the next Nexus, after successful attempts from HTC, Samsung, and LG. A mysterious Motorola device, codenamed ‘Shamu’ (the killer whale), is believed to be at the head of the pack when it comes to potential candidates for the next Nexus. And thanks to benchmarking application AnTuTu, we now have a preliminary spec sheet for Shamu. Prior warning, it’s pretty darn impressive.

So, starting off with the display, the Shamu will indeed go the Quad HD way, boasting of a 2560×1440 pixel display that should provide amazing detail and sharpness.

The Motorola Shamu sure has some impressive specs.
The Motorola Shamu sure has some impressive specs.

Moving on to the internals, the device will be powered by the next big thing cooked by Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 805, with a quad-core Krait 450 processor clocked at 2.65GHz. This will be coupled with the Adreno 420 GPU and 3GB of RAM.In the camera department, it will have a 13MP lens on the rear, along with a modest 2.1MP selfie camera on the front.

Lastly, the Shamu will be running the latest Android L, adding more credibility to the rumors pointing towards it being the next Nexus. Specs like these surpass even the greatest of flagships currently offered by HTC, Samsung, Sony, and LG. All of this at the Nexus price point? It sure sounds too good to be true.

One final thing, the AnTuTu database lists this smartphone as the ‘Google Shamu’, which all but confirms that this is going to be the search giant’s next flagship, the Nexus 6.

Hopefully, we’ll see an announcement in the near future. Early rumors also suggest that the Nexus 6 will be announced along the with the long-rumored HTC Nexus 8 tablet at an event in September itself.

The next iPhone, the next Galaxy Note, and now the next Nexus too? With all this excitement waiting for us in the coming month, we are very close to taking a recluse till September comes.

• Samsung Galaxy Alpha: Samsung’s New Design Philosophy Unveiled

Samsung Galaxy Alpha: Samsung’s New Design Philosophy Unveiled

The Galaxy Alpha has been surprisingly prone to leaks, like none other in its range. The phone looks like what an arrange marriage between Apple’s iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S5 might lead to. The phone as expected is made of a metal frame and boasts an Octa-core chipset.

Galaxy Alpha had been hot in leakster circuits ever since it was announced but with its official launch, the leakers now have one less device to worry about. Samsung seems to be learning the lessons that the market has been trying to teach it for quite a while. The company has tried a different design approach for this device. Though it resembles the design of the iPhone, it is still a welcome change from all that plastic Samsung has been throwing at the consumers for the last few years.

The phone had seen a lot many leaks before its official release.
The phone had seen a lot many leaks before its official release.

The phone is a lot thinner in comparison to its older siblings. The Alpha is 6.7mm thick and weighs about 115 grams. The display on the phone is a 4.7 inch screen with 1280X720 resolution. The styling does look premium on the device. It is anticipated that Samsung’s new design philosophy would also influence the upcoming Galaxy Note 4 which is expected to be made of new materials.

On the hardware front, the Samsung Galaxy has a few things that won’t impress the technologically minded. The device runs on the latest Android Kitkat 4.4.4 OS. It has an unnamed Octa core processor (Quad 1.8GHz + Quad 1.3GHz), and it is most probably an Exynos 5 based chipset. The RAM on the device is 2 GB and has internal storage of 32 GB. It has no expandable storage though. The Alpha has a dismal 1860 mAh battery which might dissuade a lot of folks from getting the device.

The main camera on the Alpha is a 12 megapixel shooter and is accompanied by a 2.1 MP front camera. It is capable of shooting 4K videos. It will retain the usual Samsung features such as Ultra-Power Saving Mode, S Health, Fingerprint Scanner, and Private Mode, amongst others.

The Galaxy Alpha will be available in September and will be available in black, white, gold, silver and blue colors.

• Huawei Teases to Reveal a New Device

Huawei Teases to Reveal a New Device

Huawei has sent out press invites for an event to be held on the 4th of September. The invite features a huge number 7, hinting that the device to be released will either be the Ascend Mate 7 or the Ascend D7.

While the model name might not be known, a few specs are believed to feature in this soon-to-be-released device. The star of the show is believed to be a 6” Quad HD (2560×1440) display. The device might be powered by the company’s own Kirin 920 octa-core chipset and a healthy 3GB of RAM.

Invite
The minimalistic Invite doesn’t reveal much.

Huawei also believes that this device will be better than both the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6. Now, those are some hefty claims. If Samsung doesn’t manage to bring in a Quad HD screen soon, Huawei’s claim may become true.

The rumours don’t stop here, however. If leaksters are to be believed, the company is also going to release a second device with a Full HD 1080p display and 2GB of RAM. This by no way is a mid-ranger, but will only be the lower speced sibling of the Quad HD monster to be released by Huawei.

Seems like September is going to be a busy season for the Smartphone moguls. The battle lines are drawn with Samsung set to release the Note 4, which will be followed by Apple’s iPhone 6 release. With Huawei also staking a claim to gadget greatness, things will surely get interesting for the consumers. Now we really can’t wait for September to come.

• Samsung Claim They’re Still Number One in India

Samsung Claim They’re Still Number One in India

Last week, we heard reports that Micromax had dethroned Samsung to become the Number 1 phone manufacturer for Q2 2014 in terms of units shipped. However, Samsung says this is not the case.

Economic Times talked to Samsung President and Chief Executive for South-West Asia, BD Park. He claims that these reports are false. He admitted that sales had decreased in the past quarter, and that the Galaxy S5 did not sell as well as they had predicted. Nevertheless, the company still met its targets, and according to their internal data, still controls more than 50% of the Indian market with more than double the sales of the alleged market leaders, Micromax.

Park further went on to say that “there was some business motive behind the release of such kind of data”, directly pointing the finger at Micromax for releasing false information as a media stunt to increase sales. These are some very serious allegations, and we will have to wait and see if any of these hold true.

The earlier reports were prepared by Hong-Kong based independent firm called Counterpoint Technology Market Research, allegedly being based on “thorough channel checks in terms of sales.” However, CyberMedia Research (CMR) said that while the Korean company was still the leader, the gap between the two had narrowed sharply.

• Google to Bring 60 Tbps Internet to Asia Through Undersea Route

Google to Bring 60 Tbps Internet to Asia Through Undersea Route

Google along with some major Asian telecom companies is planning to bring high-speed internet connectivity to Asia using undersea cables that will connect the two sides of the pacific in a technological alliance. The cables will connect western USA to Japan. The data transmission speed of this cable is an astounding 60 Terabits per second (Tbps.)

For this mega venture, Google will partner with some of the major telecom names in Asia such as China Mobile International and China Telecom Global. From Malaysia, there is the Global transit, from Japan KDDI and Singapore’s Singtel will also be a part of this venture.

The cables, aptly named ‘Faster’ will aid in quenching the thirst of massive internet traffic in these growing markets. Google’s senior vice president of technical infrastructure, Urs Hölzle describes the project on his Google+ page as a backbone infrastructure development for its Android system and Google Cloud computing Platform.
“At Google we want our products to be fast and reliable, and that requires a great network infrastructure, whether it’s for more than a billion Android users or developers building products on Google Cloud Platform. And sometimes the fastest path requires going through the ocean. That’s why we’re investing in FASTER, a new undersea cable that will connect major West Coast cities in the US to two coastal locations in Japan with a design capacity of 60 Tbps (that’s about ten million times faster than your cable modem).”
NEC Corporation will act as a system supplier for the FASTER cable system. NEC has more than 30 years of experience in constructing over 200,000 kilometers of cables (that’s like five times the circumference of Earth.) NEC is one of the world’s top vendors of submarine cable systems.

Google has previously invested in other undersea initiatives too like UNITY in 2008 and SJC (South-East Asia Japan Cable) in 2011. The company’s initiative to speed up the internet will help boost innovation in the countries connected through this network. It will aid in facilitating home grown products that will have an equal opportunity to stand in the world and find consumers in a different part of the world. These forms of infrastructural development have the potential to evolve the human race into one interdependent and functional species which can aim for the stars together. Though the thought is a Utopian one but Google deserves the kudos for investing in real world technological infrastructure which will be beneficial to it, as well as the people.

• Cortana to Come to Your Desktops With Windows 9

Cortana to Come to Your Desktops With Windows 9

We all are familiar with the competition between Microsoft and Apple. Just last week we heard rumors about Apple integrating its virtual assistant Siri to its desktop. It looks like Microsoft might be planning the same thing by bringing the Windows 8.1 voice assistant Cortana to the Windows 9.

maxresdefault
Microsoft is preparing to include its Cortana digital assistant in the next major version of Windows, Windows 9

It is said that like the Windows Phone 8.1 phone version, Cortana will be an app and not be integrated into the operating system. Unlike the Windows Phone 8.1 app, however, Cortana is not a ‘full screen experience,’ and rather, will allow users to ‘either type in your question or ask verbally inside a smallish window.’

Microsoft has been gradually improving Cortana every two weeks by adding additional data points and features, and as the service is HTML driven, these improvements can be expected to make their way over to the Windows 9 version.

windows-9-design-concept
windows 9 design concept

Well, we should keep in mind that a lot can change between now and Windows 9’s eventual release. Microsoft could decide to drop Cortana from Windows 9, at least at first, or reversely more updates to the virtual assistant could allow for even deeper integration into the OS.

Not too long ago, we had seen leaked images with a revamped Start Menu. Microsoft is also expected to release a preview version of Windows 9 later this year with “Metro-style” apps floating in windows on the desktop, a virtual desktops feature, and the removal of the awkward Charms bar from desktop versions of Windows.

• Leaksters at it Again : iPhone 6 Box and Handset Revealed

Leaksters at it Again : iPhone 6 Box and Handset Revealed

Love them or hate them, the leaksters are out for the all-new upcoming smartphone. No other phone has seen such scrutiny or faced such regular leaks like the Apple’s iPhone 6.

Now Techradar has gone ahead and posted snaps of what they say is the next iPhone 6 along with its box. The phone they are showing off may look like a knock off but they do have a snap with the Apple logo at the start on the display. The box seems no different from the previous releases of the phone; the screen as expected is bigger than its predecessors.

Techradar claims the photos are authentic and have been acquired through an Apple insider. The square at the center of the home button and the health app on the screen seems to be missing thereby fueling speculations of this being a mock product made by somebody with a lot of time on their hands. But overall the device shown in the image lives up to all the leaks and renders posted in the past few months.

The leaks have slowly started to become a menace. They were great when they used to release certain specifics of the upcoming products. They used to add to the hype around the products and in turn made us eagerly wait for the release date of the products. But now they are being giant spoilers, both for the companies as well as the enthusiasts. There needs to be a sort of leakster ethic with limits. By doing this, they’d keep some healthy surprises for all.

• Smoother Sale for Xiaomi Mi3, Flipkart Fixes Server Issues

Smoother Sale for Xiaomi Mi3, Flipkart Fixes Server Issues

Xiaomi was back with its big sale today bringing in about a 20,000 piece inventory for the folks who had pre-registered for the sale. The sale took place today, August 12 at 2.00 pm and the stocks flew out as soon as the sale started. Yesterday, we gave you tips on making sure you score yourself a Mi3. We tried our techniques and were amongst a fortunate few who got one.

As has been their model, the company had requested registrations from buyers interested in getting the phone. The registrations according to the company were in the 1,50,000 range. A single user could only buy one phone at a time, and the sale was on a first come first serve basis.

With such a wide gap between the demand and supply, the sale resembled a virtual knife fight and lot many folks had to go home without a phone in hand. Now, to give a fair chance to people trying their luck to give Xiaomi their hard earned money the next time, the registrations from this sale will not be carried forward. So if you were to be in line again for a Mi3, you have to re-register for the next sale that will start from 6.00 pm tonight.

Unlike the last sale when the Mi3 sale led Flipkart’s website to crash, the e-tailer seemed to have a better hang of things this time. The website performed optimally and as expected and it finished the sale without any issue, apart from the rivers of tears and expletives unleashed by folks who couldn’t get their Mi3. This time around we were able to get ourselves another Mi3 quite easily, though we did have to wait around for a bit before we could proceed to payment. Maybe this was Flipkart’s way of creating a breather space before executing orders. The website gave us time till 11.59 pm, 13th of August to execute our order, which is huge window.

Xiaomi’s strategy of limited product offering has made many folks angry. The company has made its name in the market with its exceptional products and should just clear out its inventory instead of pitting its consumers against each other keeping folks in uncertainty of getting a product. After successfully introducing their product, the company should follow Motorola’s path wholly and bring a bigger inventory for the next sale if it wants to prevent negative perceptions of itself in the Indian market.

• Moto X+1 and Moto G2 Might Launch On 10th September

Moto X+1 and Moto G2 Might Launch On 10th September

We have been waiting to get our hands of Motorola’s two new devices Moto X+1 (X2) and Moto G2. Now it looks like we can expect the devices to hit the market in September. Over the course of the last few months many rumors have pointed out that a successor to the popular Moto X called the Moto X+1 was expected and now we have a release date.

Motorola had released the Moto X full of customization options for buyers. Those included 18 different colors, accent colors, engravings, and even wood backs made from Bamboo or Walnut. However, the new Moto X2 will have all that and more, with talks of a bigger display and leather options.

According to reports, the next generation phone will feature quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, which will facilitate better multitasking and improve user experience. Motorola plans to use Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor for X+1, which currently features in HTC One M8, Samsung Galaxy S5 and LG G3.

The phone is also expected to feature 32GB storage and a 5.2-inch display, which is bigger than the Moto X, which features a 4.7-inch display. Also, it is expected to fashion a 12MP rear camera with dual-LED flash and 5MP front camera.

Moto Mix

While most the rumors have been regarding the new Moto X+1, a new exclusive report surfaced today suggesting Motorola will actually have two smartphones launching next month. The Moto X2 and a successor to Motorola’s most popular smartphone of 2013, that being the Moto G.

According to one retailer, as reported by Gottabemobile, that received details directly from a Motorola representative, the company plans to announce, and then release both the Moto X+1 as well as the Moto G2 on September 10th. This means we can expect more details and an event in which they’ll be revealed sometime in August, followed by a global launch date on September 10th.

At this point these are only rumours. However, last year the original Moto X was announced in August and arrived shortly thereafter, and we can expect the same type of announcement and rollout for this new lineup of smartphones.

• More Details About the Android L Powered Nexus 8 Revealed

More Details About the Android L Powered Nexus 8 Revealed

Google is rumored to be working with HTC for the Nexus 8 project. The release date of this device is most likely approaching with newly leaked out information suggesting that the powerful Android L tablet was recently certified.

Since last month, numerous reports cited that the new Google Nexus device, which is believed to be HTC Volantis, will be released around October or November time. The release date may help the company to hit the sales periods when more people are going to look for tech gadgets.

The device certification took place in South Korea, according to G4Games, which added on its report that HTC is building the stock Android tablet and it goes by the internal name ‘Volantis’ or ‘Flounder’. Also in the latest information, the device model number 0P8210000 emerged, which G4Games noted first came into tech consciousness back in June and courtesy of well-known gadget leaker @evleaks.

Nexus-8

Though, the supposed South Korean certification lacked most the important specifications and other features. Another leaker by the name of @UpLeaks claimed that the Nexus 8 is a beastly rival for Apple’s iPad Air and Mini.

The new Android L tablet is said to slate NVIDIA’s latest 64-bit Tegra processing chip that is paired with 4GB of RAM. This combo will fire up the Nexus 8’s very able 8MP rear cam shooter that will work with a 1.6MP front facing camera. Also, according to PhoneArena, there will be a metal chassis surrounding the 8.9-inch screen that many users are opting for to add more protection to the devices.

Google-Nexus

Despite there being no confirmation, many reports claim that HTC will unveil the new Google Nexus device this month. It is mainly due to the fact that the Nexus 7 has reduced in price on the Google Play Store. It is common for companies to reduce the price of devices when a newer one is about to be released in an attempt to get rid of old stock before the newer one comes

• New Samsung Galaxy Alpha Image Leaks its Full Specifications

New Samsung Galaxy Alpha Image Leaks its Full Specifications

Last week we saw some raw footage of the metal-clad phone which has been taking rounds on internet since January. Earlier, some pictures of black version of Samsung Galaxy Alpha were also released by Sammobile. The images confirm earlier reports that the Galaxy Alpha will sport a 4.7-inch screen and have a metallic construction.

The phone has been criticized of being another look-alike of Apple’s iPhone. Now, a new leak from TecMundo is giving us a glimpse inside this iFacade. The first leak originates from Brazil, where an anonymous reader sent the image below.

galaxy-alpha-specifications-brazil-710x304

Since the picture quality makes it hard to read the specs, read them here:

• 4.7 Super AMOLED Display
• 12 mega-pixel rear camera and 2.1-megapixel front camera
• 2GB of RAM, 32GB of Storage (64GB rumored to be available), No MicroSD
• 1,860 mAh (marked with a big ole TBD)
• Fingerprint sensor, heart rate monitor, nano SIM, USB 3.0, 4G LTE
• Android 4.4
galaxy-alpha-leak-white-5
Earlier Leaked Image Of Samsung Galaxy Alpha

The specs listed on the billboard bring no surprises – the leak confirms the Galaxy Alpha’s screen size and resolution, 1,860 mAh battery, as well as the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor and heart rate monitor. It’s the second time we hear the Alpha would feature an approx 1850 mAh battery; the relatively small capacity is likely a downside of the phone’s very thin profile of just six millimeters. Well, only time will show if Samsung managed to optimize the Alpha well enough to ensure a decent battery life.

• Microsoft’s New Surface Pro Ads Taunt the MacBook Air

Microsoft’s New Surface Pro Ads Taunt the MacBook Air

In a desperate attempt to promote its Surface Pro 3 tablet, Microsoft today launched three new ads targeting Apple’s MacBook Air and comparing the two devices. The new ads focus on the tablets multi-tasking, touch features and expandable hardware.

The advertisement titled ‘Crowded’  focuses on two narrators and how the Surface Pro 3 is a tablet and a laptop. When told about the Surface Pro 3 by the first narrator, the second claims that the tablet doesn’t have the power of the MacBook Air’s Intel i5 processor. The first narrator states that the Surface Pro 3 does have an equal processor, and shows off Microsoft Office, Photoshop, pen support and its touchscreen. The second narrator counters with showing off his own touchscreen (an iPad), and exclaims “I have a lot of stuff to carry.” The ad ends with the first narrator saying “You are more powerful than you think”, referencing Apple’s recent “Powerful” ads for the iPhone 5s.

Second advert called ‘Head To Head’ directly compares both the devices. The ad draws a parallel between the 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM on each device. However, Microsoft keeps on emphasizing the Surface Pro 3’s touchscreen, pen support and detachable keyboard, while the MacBook Air is shown to have none of those features.

The third ad “Power” starts off with a Mac user curious about a full version of Adobe Photoshop running on the Surface Pro 3, once again demonstrating the device’s laptop and tablet capabilities. The narrator claims that the Surface Pro 3 is just as fast as the Mac, boasting a touchscreen with a kickstand along with a Mini DisplayPort and a USB port. The ad ends when the Mac user states “So you’re saying it does more than my Mac?”, and the Surface Pro 3 user going “Well, technically you said it.”

• Xiaomi Releases a Fix to Address Privacy Scares

Xiaomi Releases a Fix to Address Privacy Scares

Xiaomi has faced all the spectrums of media coverage. From the good ones such as the phenomenal praise for being an innovative handset and equipment maker to the bad ones such as being an Apple copycat. Recently the company faced allegations of privacy lapse from its cloud messaging service. Some even alleged that Xiaomi was spying for the Chinese government. Xiaomi was fast on their feet to release an update that will try to put the hysteria to rest.

Here’s for some perspective on the news. A Finnish online security and Privacy Company called F-secure took it upon itself to inquire into claims of Xiaomi sending cloud based messages back to its servers in Beijing. What was more infuriating was the fact that the data that was being sent back was unencrypted, so anyone could intercept and sell it for profit. The data sent to the servers included phone’s carrier name, phone number, IMEI and even numbers and text messages back to HQ in Beijing.

The allegations were huge enough to harm the company’s potential consumer market, and hence, Xiaomi brings out this new upgrade. The MIUI cloud messaging service is a free SMS service. By routing messages via IP instead of using the carrier’s SMS gateway, the SMSes are sent free of charge. Xiaomi says it needs the data packets to determine if the message can be routed over the internet for free.

Xiaomi mi3 Review 5

The issue was that the phone’s cloud messaging was enabled to be always on sync. Now with the new ROM update, folks who buy fresh Xiaomi or factory refresh their phones will have the option to enable cloud messages manually. So if you don’t want to use Xiaomi’s cloud service you can turn it off. The update also encrypts the data that is sent to servers so that it can’t be sniffed out for unscrupulous purposes.

Xiaomi’s VP Hugo Barra took to Google Plus (in an act of corporate transparency rarely seen) to explain the entire issue. He posted an in-depth FAQ’s in which he mentions that no user data or social graph is stored, and the messages leave the servers immediately to ensure quick delivery of the message. Hopefully with the new encryption and security update, Xiaomi can return to being a giant pain to competing smartphone manufacturers and an angel in consumer’s eyes.
