  • NHAI Expected To Launch Mobile App To Keep a Check On Traffic Violation

NHAI Expected To Launch Mobile App To Keep a Check On Traffic Violation

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will be creating an app for the public, in order to check traffic violations. If reports are to be believed, then you will soon be able to report rash driving, speeding and whatever other horrible things people do while driving.

    Highway

Reports suggest that it will be a couple of months before the app is launched, after which you can even take photographs of the vehicle that you want to report for violation of traffic rules. NHAI Chairman Raghav Chandra said –

“All the complaints will get registered in the ledger pertaining to that vehicle whereupon the police/transport department can take further action about it.”

This is expected to help in acquiring data and policing the roads more efficiently. Moreover, the Chairman also added that the NHAI was working towards building an accurate data bank of all the highways. This project is already underway and is being called the Road Asset Management System or the RAMS.

All this data is also expected to help the NHAI in their plans to rectify the road structuring problems in order to help in guidance and planning of roads in the future.

Call of Duty has had incredible success as a first-person shooter game. While the earlier games revolved around World War II, the later series delved into other storylines like a post-apocalyptic futuristic society in the Black Ops titles.

Treyarch and Activision are now coming out with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 for Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on November 6. However, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will not receive the campaign mode and will only receive an online mode, at full price no less.

  • Samsung’s ClearForce Set To Take On Apple’s 3D Touch

Samsung’s ClearForce Set To Take On Apple’s 3D Touch

The tussle between Samsung and Apple over similar features in their respective devices has persisted for a while now. Both companies have a long history of legal feuds – an example of which can be the 2013 jury verdict which had required Samsung to pay $900 to Apple for infringements of patents. However Samsung still continues to sell the products which used the technology in question and had led to legal trouble in the first place.Samsung Apple Legal Trouble

Earlier this year in April, the two tech-giants were part of another courtroom drama where Apple was suing Samsung for what it claimed was the copying of the former’s patented features by the latter. Samsung, on the other hand, was counter-suing Apple for having copied its features for iPads and iPhones.

Samsung has incorporated iPhone-inspired features in the past. An example of this is the manual adjustment of exposure at the point of focus in an iPhone camera. Even though this feature is available on pretty much all Android devices, none made it as convenient as Apple. When Samsung came out with its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge this year, their cameras had the same exposure control feature as the iPhone.samsung-apple

Samsung’s phone unlocking system, which was a shoddier version of iPhone’s slide-to-unlock-feature, is another example of the tech giant coming out with similar tech as its counterpart.

Apple too has picked up features from the Korean company in the past -attempting to make a slimmer variant of iPhones, and opting for an Ion-strengthened glass are two examples.Samsung Galaxy Note 5 28

Staying true to their history of mutual inspiration, Samsung and Apple might be headed towards another common element -ClearForce, very similar to 3D Force, the highlight of the newest iPhones -iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

Apple’s launched it’s iPhones last month to a huge hoopla in the tech world. One of the most talked about characteristics of the new iPhones is 3D Touch which employs a touch-sensitive technology, enabling the device to differentiate between three distinct types of touch.iPhone 6s 2

Synaptics announced this week that it has also been working on a similar technology called ClearForce. The company plans to work with leading OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to test the technology, and Samsung is expected to employ it in its future phones, post its history of having worked with Synaptics. Synaptics and Samsung earlier worked together on the touch based finger print sensor that are part of Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

    Apple vs Samsung

Apple isn’t the pioneer of using finger-print technology -OEMs have been working on it longer than Apple, so has Synaptics as is evidenced from the progress it has made so far. Samsung wouldn’t shy away from employing this feature in its new devices once its ready. Only time will tell if it would it be another contentious feature in the list of over-laps between Samsung and Apple.

  • Social Media – The Brightest Star In Showbiz Today

Social Media – The Brightest Star In Showbiz Today

Only for the 90s kid does it seem a rather difficult task to get recognition for something they’re good at. Today’s unapologetic society’s mantra goes something like this – so what if I’m not good at anything? I can be famous too and you can’t judge me for it. Today it’s not about being good at something; it’s all about being famous. This mind-set has translated down to the vortex of social media, which was initially used to communicate with friends and people all around the world. Today, social media has been made the biggest business mogul, management company, call it what you may but it boils down to being called the new kingmaker.

    social media

However, if we look at the rise of social media in two different stages – when it was just introduced to us and now, we will have to admit that we have come a long way in understanding and utilizing the power of social media. Earlier, we would see social media sites filled with statuses that were not spelt correctly due to the raging popularity of the SMS language, they even gave rise to stars like Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian (pre-Kanye West version). Social media did not seem like the place where anybody who was really serious about anything would want to be. But, today we see it take a whole new turn, with artists, writers, fashion bloggers, singers, actors, comedians and everybody with a good sense of aesthetic take things into their own hands. The post-modern social media looks like it’s been created out of a revolution by anti-stupid people. So much so, that some modern age stars are having to change their ways in order to gain respect in the present society.

    Beyonce Twitter

Now, let’s name some of these famous kingmakers – Facebook, Twitter, Vine, INSTAGRAM, Vine, YouTube to name a few. Next, let us have a look at a couple of people they have turned into legit famous people who are now termed as ‘celebrities’:

It would be unfair to start this list without naming the queen of social media, Mrs.Kim Kardashian West. She’s seen it all, and done it all. She is the biggest success of social media and reality TV. You can follow her on Twitter, Instagram and even on her website kimkardashianwest.com. There’s not much to be said about her, we’re all secretly following her anyway –

Secondly, we have comedians all over the world putting up live shows on their YouTube channels, but we’re going to talk about someone closer home – Kanan Gill and Biswa Kalyan Rath’s ‘Pretentious Movie Reviews’. All said and done, they said everything we wanted to say about Bollywood films, and they do it all in good faith. Here’s their latest review.

Next we have a true blue Vine celebrity named Logan Paul, who has really got what Vine is all about – short, six second videos about anything. He’s picked humour. Click here to check them out. You can also follow him on Twitter and Instagram.

Before we forget the original YouTube mega child star, let’s put him down on our list – Justin Bieber. Who knows whether he’s still famous or not, the point is that he can still make it on this list and a bunch of others too. Here’s a video of Justin Bieber before he became The Biebs –

    And now –

Another desi celebrity is YouTube and Vine star, Jus Reign. He kind of has a ‘Superwoman’ vibe going on, and makes funny videos about all sorts of desi-kid problems. Here’s an example-

And because we mentioned YouTube star Superwoman, here’s a video about what she does –

Last but not the least we have on our list is already an established author, who has recently made her re-appearance into the limelight via her now famous twitter account. Our beloved – JK Rowling, agreed that this list might be horribly degrading for her to be in, but her Twitter account is fabulous.

These are just a few of the many celebrities we can follow on various social networking sites. Whether it’s made things personal or impersonal is also a debatable topic, but it has definitely made things easier for passive and harmless followers. Let us know who your favourite celebrities on social media are.

  • 7 Technology Misconceptions You Would Want To Know About

7 Technology Misconceptions You Would Want To Know About

It’s a little frightening when you start looking at how many electronic gadgets you own. Today, our most precious personal possession has got to be our phones. And the more expensive the phone, the more precious (in Gollum’s voice) it gets.

We all take that extra bit of care when it comes to our laptops and smartphones, or at least we try. But sometimes we tend to do things that have been subject to so many paranoid and not-so paranoid theories. We have decided to take a look at some of them and bust those that have worried you for a long time.

    1. Charging Your Phone Overnight Can Damage Battery Life

    Phone charging

Not everyone remembers to remove the phone from the charger just before bed time. And in the morning you tend to freak out because you feel you’ve damaged the battery. There is a long running myth that charging your phone overnight can reduce the battery life of the phone or even cause your battery to explode. But is this really true?

This may have been the case for older nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride rechargeable cells that came before the introduction of the li-ion batteries. Now, every phone is fitted with a li-ion battery and rest assured these batteries will not explode. The phones are smarter today. It automatically cuts off the charger once your phone has reached full charge. Apple has stated that “You can recharge a lithium-ion polymer battery whenever convenient, without requiring a full charge or discharge cycle.”

    2. Using Third-Party Chargers Will Cause Your Phone to Burst Into Flames

    Don’t buy unbranded, cheap knockoffs.

We tend to buy cheaper chargers sometimes because original, company made chargers are a little pricey. And as long as it charges the phone, we assure ourselves that it’s all right. But knockoffs are the reason you hear about gadgets catching fire or bursting. Third-party chargers are alright as long as they aren’t ridiculously cheap. A charger from Belkin, for example, is okay to buy, but it may not charge your device as fast as an original charger.

Knockoffs don’t usually have a brand name, and if they do, they’re pretty much an unknown brand. These are the chargers you want to avoid at all cost. It’s easy to tell the knockoffs from the trustables. You just need to keep your eyes open. Though, we would suggest always going for an original. It might be a little expensive but it’s worth it if you don’t want your phone going all ‘flame on’ on you.

    3. Going Incognito is Cool

    incognito-mode

Not. We all know that every web browser has an incognito mode or private browser. Private browsers do not save your search history and it won’t record where you go and what you do. Usually people use it if they don’t want unnecessary ads popping up since nowadays ads on Facebook, for example, are tailored to what you search on the internet; or it’s used to browse sites that are…questionable.

But what you might not be aware of is that your browser isn’t completely private. Your internet service provider will still know about the sites you visit. Even the law enforcement will know about it, if they’re looking into it. So the next time you visit a site that you’re not really supposed to, remember who’s watching. Just saying.

    4. Password Protected WiFi  Networks Are Safe From Hackers

Well, it depends on the network really. There’s a home network and a network that is used when you’re not at home. Your home network is usually very safe if it’s password protected (as long as the password is not PASSWORD) and employs WPA or WPA/2 encryption.

Outside networks, though, are a little different, and a little more open to hacking. It’s incredibly easy for hackers to download just the right software to eavesdrop into your network. Once that is done, they can look into any data that is being transferred over the net. “Hackers can launch ‘evil twin’ networks that look like the real thing, grab your password and go to town compromising your security,” said Rich Sootkoos, Boingo’s VP.

So for office networks and other outdoor networks it’s always advisable to protect your info using VPN companies such as Express VPN or IP Vanish.

    5. Prolonged Mobile Usage Can Cause Cancer

This and the next one are for the health crazies out there. Years ago some reports suggested that prolonged exposure to the phone over time can cause cancer because of the radio frequencies they emit. It was believed that the radiation from your cellphone could cause certain types of cancer.

While there are many scientific papers on this study, there have been no cases over the years to suggest the authenticity of this. Every electronic device gives off a certain amount of radiation right from your microwave to your refrigerator. While we agree that they can be harmful, you do not need to panic as much as the reports suggest.

So far there have been no documented case that suggest cancer caused by cellphone radiation. Cancer Research UK said that, “So far, the scientific evidence shows it is unlikely that mobile phones could increase the risk of brain tumours, or any other type of cancer. But we do not know enough to completely rule out a risk.”

    6. Laptop On The Lap Can Cause Impotency

    Laptop

Apart from the cancer scare, impotency is the next big concern when it comes to using electronic devices. There were theories that keeping your laptop on your lap or a phone in your pocket may result in decreased male fertility. The worry was that laptops could increase scrotal temperature.

These researches were widely declared as “speculation”and that further studies were needed to prove this contention. There is no correlation between increased scrotal temperature and infertility as of now and there have been no such cases that suggest the same. However, a word of caution must be given for anyone who keeps the laptop on their laps for a long time as the heat from the device cannot be a good thing, according to gut feeling. So we’ll just go with ‘mostly false’ regarding this story.

    7. More Megapixels Mean Better Camera

Not really. We have come to believe that a camera having a higher megapixel results in better quality images. That’s not the case at all. Megapixels have nothing to do with quality, and only helps if you plan on blowing up the photo. What’s important for quality is the camera lens and light sensor, its processor and its optics.

    Galaxy S4

This is why an iPhone 6, for example, with only 8-megapixel camera can take on those that come with 12 or 16 megapixels. And remember the whopping 41-megapixel Nokia Pureview 808? If you zoomed in on a photo taken by that up to four times, you won’t find any loss in image quality. However, the Pureview 808 actually offers a default 5-megapixel resolution, and you could easily go for an 8 megapixel camera over that and still get the same quality images.

  • USA Financial Market Dow Jones Hacked

USA Financial Market Dow Jones Hacked

Dow Jones and Co. ran into a security breach when records of over 3,500 employees were broken into. The cyber-attack involved carte blanche access to payment card and contact information of the people involved. The publishing and financial information firm said in an official statement:

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are notifying you that we recently determined there was unauthorized access to our systems. While we recognize that no company is immune to cyberattacks, we are committed to doing everything we can to protect our customers.”

The goal of the hack is mostly assumed to be an attempt to obtain contact information and send fraudulent solicitations to current and former subscribers.  Dow Jones Chief Executive William Lewis mentioned in the letter written to customers yesterday that a potential breach had been reported by law-enforcement in late July this year. However, it was confirmed only post investigation that unauthorised access to company records had begun as early as August 2012 and lasted right till July 2015. To read the full letter by William Lewis, click here.Dow Jones

This cyber-attack does not come across as an isolated incident but more like part of a larger scheme that targets other private firms and companies as well. With names like Ashley Madison and Sony that have already been victims of cyber crime, let’s see which company lands itself next in hacking trouble.

  • Can BlackBerry Make a Comeback with the Priv?

Can BlackBerry Make a Comeback with the Priv?

It’s been a while since BlackBerry has made any sort of major statement in the mobile world. There was a time when BlackBerry had so much going for it as it stood apart from the typical smartphones on the tech circuit. BlackBerry loyalists loved a great deal of what the QWERTY-centric phone was providing.

Pretty soon people started expecting more -more apps, more services, more everything, which BlackBerry was having a tough time providing. But you can’t say the company didn’t try. The BlackBerry Bold range were a great set of handsets by the company. It did have most of your favorite social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter, BBM chats. It also looked great and had a distinctive BlackBerry feel to it with finger-friendly QWERTY keyboard that was more premium than the Curve.

    BLACKBERRY BOLD
    BlackBerry Bold

The problem the Bold lineup was facing was that it lacked a lot of native apps. Around 2010, the iPhone did not face this problem and neither did the Android devices, which is what made many people trade in their BlackBerry devices for an iPhone or an Android phone. After the influx of Android devices, BlackBerry got pushed to the sideline. It was no longer ‘cool’ to own a BlackBerry. By 2011, BlackBerry was almost out of sight.

In 2013, BlackBerry made a comeback with the Z10 and Q10 which ran on the BB10 OS. The reactions towards the devices were mixed but overall it was fairly positive. While the Q10 had the traditional QWERTY keyboard, the Z10 went full touchscreen. This move was expected from a company that was literally trying to save itself. But it did not quite work well. The phones came equipped with BB10 OS. Now while the Z10 could make full use of the new OS but didn’t, the Q10 didn’t even have a chance. Quite evidently, the new OS was made for a full display. Yet the Z10 had the same problem as its predecessors – lack of native apps.

    blackberry-z10
    BlackBerry Z10

Jumping to present day -we see that BlackBerry is trying to make a comeback again with the new Priv. Much has been said about the Priv, which is like a hybrid of the Z10 and Bold. Judging solely on the renders of the device that have been seen, the Priv looks great. It looks attractive and the slide-out keyboard does not seem to hamper the device’s sleek look which is still distinctively BlackBerry at heart.

    blackberry-priv-official
    BlackBerry Priv

The phone features a full touchscreen display and a slide out keyboard to please fans of both types. Yes, there are still people out there who love the feel of a keyboard even though almost every device today is based fully on touch. Along with this, images of the Priv also suggest that the device has a curved display much like the Samsung Galaxy Edge. Furthermore, the phone is going big on security -a feature BlackBerry is already known for. There is a special security app for the device that monitors it for any threats. Also, it will also be the first Blackberry phone that will run on Android.

The specs of the Priv sound good, too. It will come with a Snapdragon 808 processor and 3 GB of RAM with 32 GB extendable storage. It features a 5.5 -inch curved display with a 1440×2560 pixel resolution and 537ppi. Finally, the Priv has an 18 MP primary camera and a 5 MP front. With a reasonable price tag, we could see BlackBerry right back into the game. Only time will tell if people are ready to go back to BlackBerry or if the company is a little too late.

Would you be willing to give the new Blackberry Priv a try? Tell us in the comments below.

  • Dummies’ Guide to Darknet: The Underbelly of the Virtual World

Dummies’ Guide to Darknet: The Underbelly of the Virtual World

It is one thing to drive cheap thrills out of crime fiction and cyber-crime drama, and it’s another to know that all the gore and darkness we have grown up to find in media and art exist somewhere. And then one fine day, someone, or a group of someones, decides to put it up online and voila! We have the Dark Web for you -the realm of the most primeval instincts -where even the Tim Burtons and H.P. Lovecrafts and Chuck Palahniuks of the world tread lightly.darknetDark Web refers to the content on Darknet not indexed by any of the commonly used search engines like Google, Bing etc. It’s often referred to as the subconscious of the internet, where only the Id is at play. Darknet, therefore, is the over-lay network of this data. Neither Darknet, nor Dark Web should be confused with Deep Web which also refers to data not available on the online servers of the ‘pedestrian’ or ‘clear’ internet. Too many darkness, deepness related terms floating around perhaps? Let’s break it all down into simpler categories.

Darknet for Dummies:The world of darknet.

Darknet: First up is the background against which all patterns are formed, the sea which inhibits all creatures – Darknet. This refers to that part of the internet which cannot be indexed by Google, Bing, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari or the likes. It is almost an established fact that this is that uncharted territory of the virtual world which is hundred times bigger than our, good old ‘clear’ internet we access through Google, Yahoo etc.Inside Darknet

Deep Web: As exciting as the name sounds, hold your horses there for a bit, the mysterious, disturbing parts of the virtual world are yet to arrive. Deep Web simply refers to content on the World Wide Web, like large databases, libraries and members-only websites, general public does not have access to. Since a major chunk of this is made up by academic resources of universities, you probably have already had a few flings with Deep Web when you tried to access a computer catalogue at a public library or a book store. Remember the lingering anti-climactic feeling in the pit of your stomach right now? Remember it next time you confuse Dark Web with Deep Web.Darknet

Dark Web: Time for the fun part now, you twisted readers, you! Darknet, as mentioned previously, refers to the content on Dark Web that cannot be indexed by any of the commonly (even not-so-commonly) used browsers. It requires specific virtual pathways for it to be accessed. It’s a realm of absolute anonymity where both the Website publishers as well as the surfers are completely unaware of each other’s identity. While governments and secret services have tried to track down individuals or groups in the past on the Darknet, more often than naught, these efforts have been in vain. Darknet, and therefore by default Dark Web, are part of Deep Web, and refer to the murky, unspoken aspects of it. A dark time on the darknet.

Dark web cannot be accessed using any of the regular methods. The user needs to use an ‘onion network’ (one which does not reveal who is communicating with whom) to be able to do it. While using pedestrian internet, the server of the website is directly accessed by the user. But this also leaves a virtual footprint of all your activity on the internet which can very easily be tracked back to you. The task of an ‘onion network’ is to break this direct link between the user and the website. When you use the said network, the commands are sent back and forth in a number of intermediate steps, making sure your online trail is not traceable at all.  This is where browsers like Tor become significant.Darknet1

Tor: Tor, which stands for The Onion Router, was an initiative of the US Navy developed with the aim of gathering intelligence and maintaining adequate secrecy while at it. But the anonymity of the browser ensured that it became a popular hub for darknet users. It’s user-friendly enough to accommodate all darknet-noobs, and a Tor download is simply a matter of two-three clicks. There’s also a version of Tor called Orbot meant for Google Android devices. The New York Times writes on Tor, “when a communication arrives from Tor, you can never know where or whom it’s from.”

TOREven though Tor is a highly popular ‘onion network’, it’s not the only one. Another example is The Freenet Project. Time for a field-trip to the dingy world of dark web now, anyone?

Things to be Found There: Nothing sums up this category more aptly than Loucif Kharouni’s statement, “You can find pretty much anything you can think of in the darknet.”

In terms of percentage, this is what a part of darknet had to offer as of January, ’15 :

    Category Percentage
    Guns 1.2
    Abuse 2.2
    Books 2.5
    Porn 2.75
    Hacking 4.25
    Fraud 9
    Black Market 9
    Drugs 15.4

As is clear from the survey, darknet is infamous for all sorts of nefarious activities, often defined as ‘criminal’ in the traditional sense of the word. Honestly, it was a little surprising to find any sort of books as part of these Hidden Web services. But then again, there’s never a dearth of illegal, banned items on the literature front. Similarly, it was also surprising to see a part of the internet where porn is not the most popular commodity.

On the other hand, darknet also harbours the ideology of ‘freedom of information’. It becomes a platform of expression for revolutionaries, anarchists or just, plain simple distraught citizens of a country with draconian censorship laws and tyrannical oppression. In this aspect, darknet offers its own set of potential revolutionaries and reformers.

    Darknet TV Show

There are ways to hire assassins for individual or group-paid murders on darknet. However such services are nothing more than money-making scams, from what the reports tell us. Similarly, there are also urban legends that talk of ‘Snuff Films’ or live telecasts of stone-cold murders. This sounds more like fiction in the same league as the Canadian TV series called Darknet. At the same time, since it’s the unexplored territory of darknet, who knows where the line between fact and fiction blurs?

People to be Found There: As mentioned above, Tor, one of the most popular servers of darknet, was developed as a service to be used by the US military and navy. Military operations require secrecy and anonymity as a mandatory, and the most important prerequisite. Darknet, thus, became the perfect site for such exchanges. However the flip-side to this is that it has the potential of being used by ‘terrorists’ or other anti-social elements in the same manner.

Darknet becomes a platform for a lot of controversial views and opinions being exchanged. Politicians, reformers and anarchists from all over the world use it to voice concerns they would otherwise not be allowed to express without the threat of persecution.Freedom of Information

In a poll which was carried out with 27,181 people, when the participants were asked if they’ve visited the darknet, it was a puny 22% who replied affirmatively. It was a no for the majority of 78%. Darknet like the subconscious of the human mind, continues to exist and exercise its desires in a world far, far away from the world of happy display pictures, bad cinema and mood altering junk food. If your curiosity ever gets the better of you, this is where you find Tor: https://www.torproject.org/. If you decide to take this plunge, keep in mind you have absolutely no idea where you are headed, and even less of an idea of where you might end up.

    Peace.
