After China, Apple iPhones Now Face Ban In Germany

Apple and Qualcomm’s patent war has gotten uglier, as some iPhone models have been banned from sale in Germany as well. Earlier, a few iPhone models had been banned in China, following a lawsuit filed by Qualcomm. Allegedly, Apple is using technology patented by Qualcomm. These were related to photo editing and arranging apps on a touchscreen. Apple seems to have found a fix for the China problem by rolling out a software update. But the German issue seem to be more complex.

    The German Ban

In Germany, Qualcomm has asked for a ban on some iPhones which are using chips made by Intel. The Judge involved in the hearing ruled that some of the phones contain a combination of chips from an Apple supplier and Intel. This violated one of Qualcomm’s patents regarding envelope tracking. This feature helps mobile phones save battery while sending and receiving wireless signals.

Earlier this week, Apple had released a software update for its iPhones in Germany, hoping to avoid the ban by using a software update. However, the update was regarding the spotlight feature in the contacts menu. It had nothing to do with the modems in question. The intel modems came into use in iPhones starting from the iPhone 7. While the latest lineup of iPhones use Intel modems, exclusively. While Apple is already working on designing and manufacturing its own chips, that won’t be a possibility for some time now.

The ban in Germany has led to the stop of iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 models in Germany. While Apple has appealed against the decision, there is nothing it can do as of now. However, the ban is only limited to Apple retail stores and the models will still be available with third party resellers. The latest lineup including the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS remain unaffected.

    Apple’s China Issue

In China, Apple hopes to reverse the ban using the latest software update. But until then, some models of the iPhone are banned there as well. If the ban wasn’t enough to hurt sales of the iPhone in Apple’s third largest market, a new movement is now troubling the tech giant as well. The recent arrest of the CFO of Huawei in Canada has led to outrage in China. More people are shunning their Apple devices. And switching to Huawei and other ‘home-made’ devices to protest against the ‘unfair arrest’.

The program also covers affected iPhone 8 devices for three years after the first retail sale of the unit.

The new colour variants kicked off another smartphone trend of OEMs launching special edition red variants of their popular devices. It now looks like that Apple will continue its Product RED series with the launch of the iPhone 8 (Product) RED.

According to a report by MacRumors, it has viewed a memo from Virgin Mobile, which says that Apple will announce the new iPhones on the 9th of April. While the memo confirms the new variants will be available for preorders, it doesn’t specify whether the iPhone X (Product) RED will be included or not.

The new colour variant launch is a part of Apple’s partnership with (RED), an advocacy group dedicated to combating HIV/AIDS in Africa. It was founded in 2006 by Bono, frontman of the iconic band, U2 and ONE Campaign activist Bobby Shriver. Over the years, Apple has launched a number of special RED iPads, iPods, cases and for the first time, in 2017, launched the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in the special edition colour.

Just like 2017, the difference between a regular iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone 8 (Product) RED will just be the colour. The specifications will remain the same.

There won’t be any launch event as Apple has not publicised or sent invites to an event yet. Similarly to last year, Apple will send out a press release to announce the new colour variant. It also appears that AirPower will be a part of the announcement. AirPower was announced along with the iPhone X launch and is a wireless charger for the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. Interestingly, all the mentioned devices can be charged simultaneously using the AirPower.

  • Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 Won’t Face CPU Throttling Like Older Generations

Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 Won’t Face CPU Throttling Like Older Generations

Ever since the iPhone X was launched, Apple has been in the news for reasons far away from the iPhone X. A few months ago, there were murmurs on the internet that Apple slows down older iPhones after launching new iPhones. These rumours were partially true as Apple later conceded. However, the company said that the only reason it slowed down iPhones was to prolong their battery life.

    iPhone 8 Plus

Many people who bought the newly launched iPhones wondered whether their smartphones will be dealt the same fate. Apple has come out and cleared the air around the iPhone X and iPhone 8 saying that it has ‘hardware updates’ to handle ageing batteries. This was mentioned as a response to Senator John Thune, head of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

    [amazon_link asins=’B072LPF91D’ template=’ProductAd’ store=’igyaan-21′ marketplace=’IN’ link_id=’99e133d2-0c06-11e8-87d2-01e69cc9b74a’]

Apple has said that the new iPhones “hardware updates that allow a more advanced performance management system.” This should come as good news for iPhone X and iPhone 8 users and future suitors of the new devices. Back in December, Apple had issued the following statement to clear the air around its actions pertaining to older iPhones slowing down with time:

Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.

Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions.

We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.

    Apple
iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus Do Not Have The Hardware Updates

Ever since the announcement, the company has faced a backlash from consumers and has been received multiple lawsuits from consumers. To somehow curb the criticism, Apple apologised to its consumers and said that a number of changes will be made to regain the trust of its consumers.

We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize. There’s been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we’re making.

Apple conceded that it would cut the price of an out-of-warranty battery replacement from US $79 (Rs. 5000 approx.) to US$29 (Rs. 1850 approx.) for an iPhone 6 or later. Also, Tim Cook conceded that Apple would soon release a feature wherein users would have the option of choosing. A user can choose whether to slow down their iPhone or let it run normally and risk shutdowns.

Apple iPhone 7s And 7s Plus May Be Thicker With Glass Backs And Wireless Charging

While the rumours surrounding the upcoming iPhone 8 have been plenty, we have not heard a lot about the other two iPhone 7s models. While there have been some leaks of the iPhone 7s models, a new report claims that Apple might compromise on size to accommodate new features such as wireless charging into the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, making them thicker than the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus.

Rumours are that the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will be “slightly bigger in every dimension.”, meaning that the newer iterations could be wider, taller, and thicker than the previous iPhone 7.

The dimensions of the iPhone 7s will reportedly be 138.44 mm x 67.26 mm x 7.21 mm, slightly larger that the iPhone 7’s current dimensions – 138.3 mm x 67.1 mm x 7.1 mm. The marginal size difference might go unnoticed by the users. Meanwhile, the iPhone 7s Plus’s dimensions are reported to be at 158.37 mm x 78.1 mm x 7.41 mm, whereas the size of the iPhone 7 Plus is 158.2 mm x 77.9 mm x 7.3 mm.

Both the devices have the similar haptic TouchID home button at the bottom, volume buttons on the left and the power button on the right. Much like the previous iPhone 7, the 7s and 7s Plus will have sensors placed at the top of the screen . The iPhone 7S Plus is reported to feature a dual camera setup, whereas the 7S will have a single lens camera. Apple will most likely upgrade the iPhone 7S variants with the A11 Fusion chip and increased RAM.

The iPhone s series is expected to launch in three colors: black, silver, and gold.s on 12th September. Aside from the smartphones, a new model of the Apple Watch  and a 4K Apple TV are expected to be unveiled at the same event.

  • iPhone 8 OLED Display And Power Cable Leaked

Apple is prepping for the September launch of the widely anticipated iPhone 8. Though the launch is nearer than ever, the smartphone still doesn’t seem to be catching a break from leaks and rumors. An image leak shows iPhone 8’s OLED display assembly, lightning and power flex cables, further corroborating the existing reports.

These images, though blurry give a close look of the iPhone 8’s internals.  The display panel picture confirm the curved edges and bezel less design. No physical home button could be seen on the images, indicating that the iPhone 8 will feature a virtual home button and most likely launch without Apple’s iconic Touch ID.

The OLED panel image also displays the notch on the top of the smartphone which houses the sensors and the dual-cameras used for 3D mapping for FaceID. The  HomePod firmware leak had confirmed that the iPhone 8 will arrive with facial recognition technology. The smartphone’s front camera, which was rumored to feature 4K video recording at 60 FPS can also be seen in the leak.

The display has always been a major component of the iPhone (or any smartphone) and Apple may finally be throwing OLED panels into the mix, all thanks to Samsung ramping up its manufacturing facilities after Apple termed the latter as the sole provider of the iPhone 8’s display.

Apart from the display assembly, the image leak also includes lightning and power flex cables. There have been multiple reports suggesting that Apple will launch the iPhone 8 with wireless charging capabilities.

The smartphone is expected to run on the Apple A11 Chipset and will be available in 128GB and 256GB variants for the iPhone 8. To be launched with iOS 11, the smartphone is speculated to range from US $ 1,100 to US $ 1,200.

  • Samsung OLED Production Lines For iPhone 8 Ramping Up To Full Capacity

Samsung OLED Production Lines For iPhone 8 Ramping Up To Full Capacity

As the launch of the iPhone 8 approaches, a new report suggests that Apple is claiming almost one third of Samsung’s OLED displays for the upcoming iPhone 8’s screens.

Samsung has reportedly geared up to operate seven of its next-generation OLED production lines at full capacity, all of which are dedicated to Apple and the iPhone 8. By ramping up their scale of production, Samsung Display, a unit of Samsung, is now able to manufacture about 45,000 panels a month for OLED displays, out of which 15,000 of them are allegedly reserved for Apple.

Samsung Display being the only supplier of the Apple iPhone 8’s OLED screens, the manufacturer, is said to further increase the production from 15,000 panels per month for Apple to 105,000 panels per month. The report says that full-scale production will begin later this month, with output capacity increasing by 700%.

At this rate and capacity, Samsung Display facilities are expected to yield approximately 130 million 5.8-inch screens per year. However, due to Apple’s specific requests, which involve “high degree of technical difficulty”, the actual production may decrease to 60% (which will amount to about 79 million displays for Apple iPhone 8).

Subsequently, the current reports of Samsung facing technical challenges during OLED display manufacturer for its future iPhones, seem to validate the rumours of production delays for the next iPhone, potentially leading to a limited iPhone 8 launch.

Though Samsung is currently reported to be the sole supplier of the OLED displays for the iPhone 8, it might not be the case for long. Apple seems to be already on a hunt for a new OLED display supplier for its future iPhones.

Recent announcements of Apple investing  $2.7 billion in LG Display to help set up new OLED production lines dedicated for the future iPhones seems a little less than promising for Samsung. Subsequently, LG is also planning to invest $13 billion in OLED production over the next three years in order to continue its dominance in the OLED TV screen market. The company hopes to “make inroads against rival Samsung in smartphone displays.” Irrespective, Samsung is building the world’s largest OLED production plant in hopes of getting future Apple orders.
