New Motorola Razr Breaks Cover In China Without The Chin

Motorola didn’t launch a new Razr in 2021, with reports and leaked details strongly suggesting a new model to be launching this year. Yesterday, the upcoming Motorola Razr (codename Maven) was officially showcased in China. Though it was more of a sneak peek than a full reveal, the pictures give us a glimpse at the foldable’s design.

Chen Jin, Lenovo Mobile Chia GM showcased the next Motorola Razr at a press event. The handful of pictures taken shows the device in both folded and unfolded form. As seen in the images, the new Razr ditches the “chin” design of the earlier models that emulated the original 2000s Razr.

Pictures of the new Razr, when closed, give us a look at the new dual-cameras at the bottom right corner. The new Razr design actually looks quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3.

A teaser video posted on Weibo further shows off the new Motorola Razr. The new hinge looks inspired by Samsung’s design, as well as the new larger outer display, the main USP of the Galaxy Z Flip.

Previous leaks have already confirmed that the new Motorola Razr will be powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. The latest spec leaks suggest that the new Razr will feature a 6.7-inch P-OLED folding screen, 120 Hz refresh rate, and a redesigned hinge. The outer display is expected to be bigger than before at 3-inches. Camera duties will be handled by a 50-megapixel main camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide.

Motorola’s long-awaited smartphone, the Moto Z4 that was set to replace its predecessor, namely the Moto Z3 of 2018, has had a lot of rumours and hype surrounding its release and pricing. There had been numerous leaks going around and a render that seemed promising.

    Motorola

Motorola had yet to provide a specific release date for its current-gen smartphone but in a bizarre turn of events, had the Moto Z4 listed in Amazon under a price tag of $499. Adding to the absurdity was the fact that a customer had actually bought the handset and making matters weirder, it actually got delivered.

Amazon shortly afterwards took down the listing of Moto Z4 after a Reddit post, by the aforementioned customer, started gaining traction online. However, it is already confirmed through the Amazon listing, the specification that the phone will carry. Sporting a 6.39-inch FHD+ OLED FullVision display alongside a Snapdragon 675 and 4GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. Powered by a 3600 mAh battery with 15W charging and a headphone jack as well.

    Motorola

The Moto Z4 receives an upgrade with its 48MP primary back camera that utilizes pixel binning (Quad Pixel technology) for a 12MP photo and the front-facing camera that has a 25MP sensor. The smartphone also offers an in-display fingerprint sensor and MicroSD card slot that is compatible with storage upto 2TB. • New Motorola Patents Suggest Thinner Bezels On Future Devices

New Motorola Patents Suggest Thinner Bezels On Future Devices

Motorola launched the G7 series last month with an all-new design. The smartphones were first from the company to sport a waterdrop notch. In a fresh patent listing, the parent company of Motorola, Lenovo has filed for new designs that might make its way into future devices from the company.

    Motorola Patent Listing

The patents were registered on the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) website on the 5th of March. These show the all-new designs Motorola is working on. All the designs show a waterdrop notch like the one last seen on the Moto G7 and Moto G7 Plus. But unlike G7 devices, some of the images show a smartphone with minimal or no chin. There is also a new, more trimmed notch size which will increase the screen to body ratio substantially. The camera placement on the devices seems to be the same as the current generation, two cameras placed horizontally with an LED Flash underneath. The fingerprint sensor seems to be located in the rear mounted Motorola Batwing logo.

More images from the Motorola patent show different camera placements in the smartphones. There is a vertically aligned camera sensor which is reminiscent of the Moto One Power launched last year. The second image shows a horizontal dual camera placement, but unlike the G7 it is placed on the top left corner at the back of the device. The third variation shows a single camera sensor and what possibly could be a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor underneath it. This may be used to capture 3D and depth information. Below it there is a standard LED Flash followed by a fingerprint sensor.

The designs discovered in the latest Motorola patent may make its way into the next generation of smartphones by the company. It is expected to announce the next generation of its flagship Moto Z device in a few months, which may end up exhibiting a few of the design characteristics.

  • Moto G7 With Waterdrop Notch and Larger Display Leaked

Moto G7 With Waterdrop Notch and Larger Display Leaked

Motorola announced their first G series smartphone back in 2013. With its great specifications, near stock android experience and a very competitive price, it took over the Indian smartphone market like a storm. Motorola was one of the first companies to choose the online only sales model. They were able to keep the price of their devices comparatively low and offer a lot of features at the same time that helped them gain traction in the Indian market. But Chinese smartphone makers like Xiaomi and Oppo soon joined the bandwagon of cheap mobile devices in India. While Xiaomi was selling smartphones online at very low prices and Oppo spent heavily on advertisements, the tight competition started hurting the sales of Motorola. However Motorola did fine till the Moto G5 series, after the launch of Motorola G6 the company saw a sharp decline in their sales due to cut throat competition that had phones with much better specifications and a lower price.

Now the company must come up with a solid product to revive the lost market share with their upcoming devices. One key device in their portfolio will be the upcoming Moto G7. The renders and alleged specifications of the same have now leaked online.

The picture reveals that the Moto G7 will have a dew drop notch on top of the display. The camera seems to be protruding out of the back glass panel like the Moto G6. The fingerprint sensor has now moved to back of the phone. Also the fingerprint sensor is housed in the Moto logo just like in the Moto One Power. Motorola claims they are the first company to achieve this.

    Specifications:

Moto G7 leaked specsThe Moto G7 has a 6.4 inch Full HD+ screen. It has an octa-core processor. However the leak does not specify the exact chipset. It has a 16 MP + 5 MP rear camera setup and a 12 MP front facing camera. The smartphone has a 3500 mAh battery and Motorola might add the turbo charging capability which was recently seen in the Motorola One Power. In terms of security it will have a fingerprint sensor. Talking about storage, it has 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of inbuilt storage. Most significantly, it will run on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box.

These pictures and specifications are obviously leaked and they might not be exactly the same at the time of launch. Motorola is yet to officially launch the G7. We will have to wait for the company to do the same to know if this leak is real.

  • Motorola Phones May Soon Have Self Repairing Displays

Motorola Phones May Soon Have Self Repairing Displays

The Motorola flagship, the Moto Z2 Force was launched on 10 August 2017 with a shatter-resistant coating on the display and a dual camera setup. Though the shatterproof tech can survive a few drops and bumps, but it isn’t strictly “shatterproof “. Therefore, Motorola has reportedly decided to take display protection a step further.

A newly-filed patent shows that Motorola is planning to build a thermal self-repairing phone, covered with shape memory polymer materials or ‘Smart Glass’.The self repairing tech will detect cracks on its external smart glass and notify the user. The user will then mark the damage area using the fingertip, while heat from the phone will be applied to the smart glass in order to repair the damage.

In the above image, Motorola described the process of the phone’s self-repair with thermal elements. The heat from the phone will trigger the smart glass’s shape memory properties, hence reversing the damage.

The FIG. 12 shows a user identifying the damage by encircling the crack on the smart glass. The phone can then identify the segments which need to be reset, and where to apply heat.

Though the self healing smart glass is a big step forward, Motorola described in the filed patent that the tech will “reverse at least some deformation”, and not all. As it would be difficult to reverse the damage on shattered screens. Safe to say, the thermal self repairing tech may not be able to fix the smart glass if it is completely broken or a a chunk of the screen is chipped out.

Even though original patent papers for the thermal self healing technology have surfaced, it will be a while before we witness the tech in a phone. It also appears that this patent was filed way back in or before 2011 as it features dockable phones like the Motorola Atrix which were launched back then. This means that Motorola has wanted to solve this problem for a while. If this technology does appear from the Motorola stable, hopefully they will license it out to the other big manufacturers namely Apple and Samsung, who have had major issues with broken smartphone displays.

From the Moto G5 Plus to The Moto G5S Plus – What Has Changed?

Lenovo-owned Motorola just announced the Moto G5S Plus, successor to its popular mid-ranger the Moto G5 plus. Priced at Rs 15,999, the Moto G5S Plus is at par with the Moto G5 Plus which is priced at Rs 14,999.

The fingerprint sensor sits below the display and can double up as a single-navigation button as well and the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The highlight of the new device is the 13MP dual-camera setup with an f/2.0 aperture. The Moto G5S Plus will enter the budget smartphone segment which already has big players like Xiaomi and Huawei’s sub-brand, Honor. Motorola’s focus on the camera performance suggests that it has identified a  certain section that rates camera performance highly and on a budget, and the new G5S Plus’ camera performance may just decide its fate in the highly competitive price-segment.

The spec-bump other than the camera is nothing to ride home about. Although the Moto G5S Plus will feature a dual-camera setup, the aperture is now f/2.2 which may effect low-light image quality. How the Moto G5S Plus performs in the real world is yet to be seen and a camera comparison with the G5 Plus will be an interesting one. Stay tuned on iGyaan for more updates.

Motorola announced the opening of its retail stores “Moto Hub” at the Great India Place Mall, Noida today.  Six MotoHub stores were established across the country – 3 in Delhi and 3 in Mumbai.
