Q2: Samsung Remains Top Smartphone Seller as Apple Comes In Second

Despite an initial dip in sales, Samsung emerged as the top smartphone seller in the second quarter, while Apple and other Chinese companies also saw an increase. A quarterly survey by IDC shows the rise in demand and usage of the smartphone from 11.6 percent a year back to to 337.2 million units, recently.

“The overall growth of the smartphone market was not only driven by the success of premium flagship devices from Samsung, Apple, and others, but more importantly by the abundance of affordable handsets that continue to drive shipments in many key markets,” said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC.

Samsung ranks first, with a 21.7 percent market share, followed by Apple with 14.1 percent. In the third place we have China’s Huawei with an 8.9 percent market share, followed by Xiaomi (5.3 percent) and Lenovo + Motorola.(4.8 percent). Moto E (Gen 2) Faces Price Cut on Flipkart

Motorola has dropped the prices of Moto E (2nd gen) and Moto E (2nd gen) 4G by Rs.1,000 on Flipkart. The price drops by another Rs.1,000 if you exchange your old phone, although it is to be noted that the discount is available only on select handsets.

Motorola’s latest move comes just a week before it announces the latest Moto G and Moto X on July 28. In addition to that, it seems Motorola has been keeping track of its rival Xiaomi, which has slashed rates of its phones in the past two weeks.

The Moto E (Gen 2) 4G LTE, touts a 4.5-inch qHD (540×960p) screen and a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor as compared to the Snapdragon 200 processor of the Moto E(Gen 2) 3G model. The handsets features 1GB of RAM and 8GB of inbuilt storage capacity, expandable up to 32GB. A rear camera of 5MP is fitted onto Moto E (Gen 2) LTE, while the front has a 0.3MP shooter. Running on Android 5.0 Lollipop, the device comes with a 2390 mAh battery.

According to our very own Bharat Nagpal, the 2nd Gen Moto E is “a budget hero and gets better with an improved build and customizable options thanks to the new grip bands”.

  • New Moto X (3rd Gen) Leak Shows Front Facing Flash and Fingerprint Scanner

New Moto X (3rd Gen) Leak Shows Front Facing Flash and Fingerprint Scanner

A new set of images about the upcoming Moto X have leaked and reveal some new details that were missing in the previous leak. The new images have leaked on a Facebook page called Peru Android and while the authenticity of the images cannot be claimed, it still provides some interesting information. According to the images, the new Moto X will feature a front facing flash and a fingerprint sensor in a very unique position.

As you can see in the images above, Motorola has placed the flash in the top right corner of the phone. This is good news for selfie enthusiasts, who have to find a bright spot for every time they take a selfie. Moto X (3rd Gen) will reportedly come with a 5MP front camera, which means you can finally post the desired selfies you always wanted.

As far as fingerprint sensor is concerned, Peru Android says that Motorola has built it on the lower front speaker, which is an interesting choice. Unlike Apple and LG, both of which have created a dedicated button for the fingerprint sensor, Motorola has integrated the fingerprint sensor into a functional component.

Motorola will unveil the new Moto G and Moto X at an event on July 28. Till then, we will be on the lookout for any new details.

Moto G (3rd Gen) Leak Confirms That It’s Water Resistant

Instead of waiting for 28th July, Motorola should already unveil the specifications for the upcoming Moto G and Moto X.Yesterday, a retailer leaked the specifications for the Moto G (3rd Gen) and now a new set of images of the upcoming phone have been leaked, confirming what was reported in the earlier rumours.

As you can see in the above photograph, most of the details on the dummy unit already confirms what we saw in yesterday’s leak. The one detail that was left out yesterday was the IPx7 certification, which was rumored but never confirmed. The dummy unit confirms the certification, which means that the Moto G (3rd Gen) is water resistant and can survive after being submerged under 1m of water for 30 minutes.

The Moto G (3rd gen) has a 5 “(12.7 cm) TFT, Gorilla Glass display and is powered by Li-Ion 2470 mAh battery. The device has been priced at EUR 199 (approximately Rs. 13,700). The details were leaked yesterday by Spanish e-commerce website fnac.

Motorola’s Media Invite Teases the Launch Date for the New Moto G

Just two days ago, we reported a leak that showed off the next generation Moto G and Moto X by the Lenovo owned Motorola. Motorola India has sent a media invite for the 28th July, which could possibly be for the launch of Moto G (3rd Gen.) in India.

Moto G Media Invite Though the invite doesn’t really say anything specific about the event, our guess is that the company could launch the next generation Moto G. The date, 28th July, corroborates with the earlier rumours we heard about the Moto G’s launch date.

According to the photos that leaked a few days ago, the new Moto G (3rd Gen) seems to have identical hardware Snapdragon 410, 2GB RAM and Android 5.1.1 out of the box. It will have 4G + dual SIM versions and is a IPX7 waterproof cell phone.

Motorola will offer the new Moto G with various options. The Moto G 8GB variant will come with 1GB of RAM whereas the Moto G 16GB variant will come with 2GB of RAM. The new Moto G will be equipped with a 13 MP main camera and a 5 MP front-facing camera. The company will reportedly also extend the Moto Maker to the Moto G.

Motorola Announces Android Lollipop Update for Moto X (Gen 1)

Motorola has started rolling out Android 5.1 Lollipop for Moto X (1st gen) users in India, according to an announcement by David Schuster, VP of Product Sales and Operations. He also announced that the update would be received by users in 14 other countries including Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

    https://plus.google.com/+DavidSchuster/posts/CVeStkHUbak

The latest update brings many improvements in Moto X (Gen 1) such as improved natural touchscreen interactions, automatically connecting your phone to home WiFi network. As BGR points out, the update has also fixed the heads up notification bug, which removed the notifications from the drop down notification menu when users swiped it from the lock screen.

Since the update is being rolled out over-the-air, it will take some time before your phone receives the update.

Moto X (Gen 2) already received Android Lollipop update in December last year. Motorola is speculated to launch the Moto X (Gen 3) in November this year. The new generation will run on Snapdragon 810 chipset and will house a 16MP rear camera with Clear Pixel Technology. The battery powering the new Moto X will be at 3280 mAh. The device will come in two storage variants – 32GB and 64GB.

If you don’t want to wait for Moto X (Gen 3) till November, here are the specifications for Moto X (Gen 2):

  • Exclusive : Moto’s Next Phone to Have a Solid Build and an Excellent Camera

Exclusive : Moto’s Next Phone to Have a Solid Build and an Excellent Camera

In the world of mobile handsets, there are very few companies that manufacture phones which are well-built and at the same time, carry high-end specs. The biggest example of this would be the Apple iPhone. Excellent innards mixed with delicate hardware.

Motorola, on the other hand, has a long history of being a firm which produces viably sturdy handsets while keeping the device technologically updated from the software front. Recently, iGyaan got an official tip from the company that their new phone may be similar to their old Motorola Defy.

Released in January 2011, the Motorola Defy could resists water and dust. Its screen was tough and scratch proof, the construction super rigid and environment proof. The phone, at the time, came with a 3.7-inch display, 5MP camera and 1500mAh battery.

Imagine the aesthetics of the Moto Defy and the specifications of today – that’s what Motorola is planning to bring to the table.

This was supported by leaked images and a video of the upcoming what is could possibly be, the Moto X Third Gen, courtesy a Google+ leaker who goes by the name Neo Lee.

The video has been removed on YouTube, but can be viewed here on Google+. Nothing much could be made out from the video, as it simply showed someone scrolling through and reading the specs of the phone. The rumoured phone is expected to have a Snapdragon 410, a 5-inch screen, 1 GB RAM, 8GB storage + microSD expansion, a slightly better 13MP or 16MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera and LTE radio.

    moto-x-3rd-gen

On the other hand, the new images reveal a good amount about the upcoming phone. A photo of the rear panel suggests the new smartphone carries forward Motorola’s design language, which includes the dual LED flash. The device is also operating on the latest version of Android (5.1.1 Lollipop). With the new third generation Moto X, Motorola is possibly working towards testing with glass and metal for its device, giving it a solid premium look.

The Moto X (3rd Gen) might have everything that it takes to be the best all-round device we can get from Motorola. With this, the new Motorola smartphone could stand up against the likes of Samsung and Apple.

No Moto Maker for India, But You Could Win a Moto X Instead

A few days back, Motorola posted teaser tweets which several Indian media networks decided were hinting at Moto Maker’s arrival in India.

For those of you who don’t know, Moto Maker is a customization programme, that gives you the option to choose from a variety of back panels and device colours to give it your own personal touch. You can also engrave your initials or a message on the back side of your phone or a customized splash screen.

Instead, Motorola has launched a contest to celebrate the company’s batwing logo turning 60. Motorola has come up with a new promotional campaign, tagged as #MyMotoLogo. The contest is easy to understand. Six people who come up with the most creative Moto Logo will be declared winners and will be entitled to take home a Moto X with them, with their customized logo inscribed on it.

    motocontest

To participate in the #MyMotoLogo contest, contestants can recreate Moto batwing logo in the form of a doodle, installation, arrangement, rangoli, graffiti, illustration or graphic design and upload the logo. The entries can be submitted entries via any of the three social networking platforms -Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with #MyMotoLogo tag to Motorola India. (Users can also send the logo to the official dedicated website.) The contest will end on 25th June.  You can click here for more information.

We don’t know if Motorola’s customisation program will be available in India anytime soon. Till then, we suggest you get your creative juices flowing for the #MyMotoLogo contest!

  • This Might be the Best Time to Get Moto-ed

This Might be the Best Time to Get Moto-ed

A few days back, under the cover of Flipkart’s Electronics Sale, Motorola was offering its devices at a considerably lower price tag. The marketing strategy rushed customers to buy devices from Flipkart, since the sale only lasted for two days. Now, the good news is, most of Motorola’s phones have retained the tempting offers even after the sale is over. It gets us wondering, if should we ready ourselves for the 2015 lineup. Is Motorola clearing up stocks to make room for this year’s iterations?

Here’s a quick look at the ongoing offers – the high-end Moto X (Gen 2) is currently available for Rs. 21,999, a massive drop from its original launch price of Rs. 31,999. According to our review, the right mix of design build quality and top notch hardware makes the Moto X (Gen 2) an aggressive competitor in the major smartphone market. In most countries, the phone is available at a cheap price and with a contract, but in countries like India, it has to be bought outright.

Watch the Moto X (2nd Gen) Review here:

The Moto 360, Motorola’s coveted smartwatch, is now available in the market for a mere Rs. 12,999. This isn’t news, the smartwatch globally faced a price cut, shortly after the Apple Watch went on sale. Motorola’s first wearable went on sale in India back in October last year, priced at Rs. 17,999. It is one of the few Android Wear devices with a round display.

Moto G (Gen 2) is available for Rs. 10,999, which was originally priced at Rs. 12,999. The only two products by the company which are being sold at the prices they were launched at, are the premium Moto Turbo (Rs.41,999) and the budget Moto E(Gen 2.)

    Moto Turbo India 19
Only Moto Turbo’s price remains unchanged.

The reduction of pricing on Motorola devices isn’t anything new, the company has been steadily cutting them down since the past year. This also leads to the question; should you invest in the current models, or wait and save till the new ones arrive? Recently, both Moto G (Gen 3) and Moto X (Gen 3) were leaked, indicating their imminent release. We’ve even heard that the next iteration of the Android Wear-based Moto 360 is on the cards.

Over the past few years, Motorola has established its place well in the Indian smartphone market. Other than the Chinese contenders, OnePlus and Xiaomi, Motorola is the company known for delivering noteworthy products at affordable pricing. Though the company only retails online via Flipkart, they have recently made efforts to reach potential customers, offline. The company opened up its first experience store in Bangalore where consumers can test and try their products, before making their purchase online. They’ve also attempted to strengthen their after-sales services.

Like we said, if you’re thinking about investing in a Motorola product – now would be the right time!

  • Moto G (Gen 3) Spotted on Flipkart’s Smartphone Listing

Moto G (Gen 3) Spotted on Flipkart’s Smartphone Listing

Seems like Motorola is geared to release another version of Moto G shortly. The Schaumburg-based company hasn’t come out with any such announcement, but we have learnt this from Motorola’s exclusive online partner, Flipkart. Next-gen Moto G smartphone was recently spotted on Flipkart where sparse details of the phone were provided. The Indian e-commerce website might have accidently made the page live, but it stamps the rumours of Moto G (Gen 2) successor in the pipeline.

The Moto G (3rd Gen) page has come up with an early listing of the handset. It does not give away much of the details like display, processor, etc. and discloses just the internal storage capacity of the phone. It does not even have an image of the upcoming smartphone. The only details known are that it will be available in white colour and will have 8GB in-built storage space. The Indian version of Moto G (3rd Gen) will have a model number AP3560AD1K8.

    moto-g-3rd-gen

    moto-g-3rd-gen

There have been rumours of the Moto G (Gen 3) sporting a 5- or 5.2-inch full-HD display, packing a 64-bit 1.7GHz Snapdragon 610 SoC along with 2GB of RAM and 4G LTE support.

It’s not clear if Motorola purposely leaked its next smartphone to give it hype, or if it was Flipkart who mistakingly slipped the information. Motorola is hopping forward in the smartphone race, where, the competition among the mid-range handsets is at its peak. It would be nice to see how Motorola plays its cards this time and what difference it makes on the present electronic brands.

It is worth noting that both the first-gen and second-gen handsets did really well in the Indian market, and the third phone in the series is likely to continue the trend.

The device debuted last year but hasn’t been able to make way for itself in the competitive smartphone arena, with Samsung Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6 grabbing all the spotlight. The US-based electronics firm is aware of its lagging position among other smartphone brands like Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, and is reportedly working on the successor of Moto X (2nd gen).

The link to buy the products has currently been taken down, but it should be up shortly.

The Moto 360 has been one of the most-wanted wearables in the market. The Moto 360 has a 1.65 inch display that is protected by Gorilla Glass. The water-proof watch runs on Android Wear and gives timely updates based on the location like weather, traffic, time, reminders, etc.

It is very likely that the price cut has been done to clean out space for new inventory of premier smartwatches.  Motorola has been rumoured to be working on a Moto 360 successor which boasts a 360×360-pixel screen. Although, nothing has been confirmed till now.
