  • OnePlus 6T Everything We Know

    OnePlus 6T Everything We Know

The OnePlus 6T is one of the most awaited devices in the smartphone market right now. Continuing the legacy of OnePlus, which brings flagship features at a mid-range price, the device is set to be a favourite of many. Despite the fact that this is a ‘T’ upgrade and not a number upgrade, OnePlus has not held back in terms of innovation. With the launch of the OnePlus 6T nearing, here is a round-up of all the confirmed features and expected specifications.

    Waterdrop notch

The water drop notch is not something new. The Essential Phone and many Oppo phones carry a similar design. Oppo as we all know is owned by BBK Electronics, the company that owns OnePlus as well. Any new feature on Oppo or Vivo smartphones is mostly seen in the OnePlus brand as well. The water drop notch is no exception. This notch looks like a tiny water drop and helps to avoid hindrance when watching videos.

    In-screen fingerprint

Another feature finding its way into the OnePlus phones from the BBK Electronics subsidiary Oppo and Vivo is the in display fingerprint scanner. This technology has gone through improvements to match physical fingerprint scanners and is almost as fast and as accurate. According to OnePlus, they have spent months shaving milliseconds off the unlock time and carefully refining the unlock animation to ensure a satisfying experience. The fingerprint scanner is present under the screen and lights up when scanning. It looks extremely futuristic and is a great addition to the OnePlus 6T.

    No headphone jack

For years OnePlus has boasted, and sometimes joked, about keeping the headphone jack when many other manufacturers have done away with it. It seems that the OnePlus 6T is going to change the company’s stance on the same. During the launch of the OnePlus 6, they also released a wireless bluetooth earphone called the Bullets wireless. The earphones have been majorly out of stock throughout the year since their launch. However, the new phone will come bundled with Type C earphones and OnePlus is trying to match the supply to the huge demand for the earphones.

    Improved navigation

OnePlus has promised to provide a smooth, fast and burden less experience with their UI. Even though the OnePlus UI is usually very close to stock android, new gestures in the Oxygen OS will make tasks like opening the camera, opening recent apps etc easier. OnePlus also stated that whenever you swipe up in an app, its window will follow your finger, which makes for a more natural experience. You will also be able to hold the power button for 0.5 seconds to activate the Google Assistant. This is a welcome change since it was impossible to activate Google assistant with gesture navigation on the previous versions of Oxygen OS.

    Bigger 3700 mAh battery

OnePlus 6T reportedly packs a bigger 3,700 mAh battery which is a 10% improvement from the OnePlus 6. This will make the OnePlus 6T a premium phone with one of the biggest batteries. To put things into perspective, the Pixel 3 has a 2,915 mAh and the LG V40 ThinQ has a 3,300 mAh battery respectively. With OnePlus’ proprietary dash charging, the battery life of the phone will be hard to beat for other phone manufacturers.

Android 9 Pie and new UI

OnePlus 6 is already running on Oxygen OS with a base of Android Pie, When the OnePlus 6T launches, it will be only the seventh device to run Pie. The device has fast software updates which is one of the key reasons for its popularity. OnePlus 6T will be no different, with minimal UI changes and mostly stock android, this phone is sure to be a hit!

  • OnePlus will Bring Android P To OnePlus 3 and 3T

OnePlus will Bring Android P To OnePlus 3 and 3T

OnePlus in a post on their forums has confirmed that the company will provide the Android P update to phones as old as the OnePlus 3 all the way upto the OnePlus 6. The company also says that the updates will be available in the coming months. With Google expected to officially roll out Android P during the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL launch, most manufacturers working towards the Android P update will follow soon after.

OnePlus has been focusing a lot on community conversation, and this shows that the company is ready to tackle the frustration of some of the owners of the older Oneplus devices in getting some of the key features. The company, earlier this year, enabled certain camera features  to their previous models via a software update.

OnePlus has now rolled out several models of the OnePlus 6, including storage and Ram variations and limited edition models including the new colours. The company may launch a new phone later this year dubbed the “OnePlus 6T”. The next version is expected to launch with a all display front removing the notch from the device completely.

Since it was launched, we’ve been listening to questions asking about our next major update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. After internal discussions and evaluation, we have decided to focus our development resources on the Android P project instead of upgrading the device to Android 8.1, so that we can offer more exciting features and improvements for our OnePlus 3 and 3T users. Over the past few months, we have been working closely with Google on the Android P Beta program. Thanks to everyone’s participation and continued feedback, the progress we have made together has been greatly accelerated. The Android P update will be available on the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5/T and OnePlus 3/3T, in this order. We will keep you all updated in the coming months. [/toggle]

  • New Open Beta Updates Pushed For OnePlus 3 & 3T

New Open Beta Updates Pushed For OnePlus 3 & 3T

OnePlus has released OxygenOS Open Beta 39 and Open Beta 40 for the OnePlus 3 and the 3T, respectively. These new updates bring a few significant changes to the devices’ software. The users who have opted for the Open Beta will receive an OTA update which requires a standard installation procedure. While the users running the stable build may have to follow certain steps to sign up for the beta program.

    OnePlus 3T Open Beta Program
    OnePlus 3T

With their latest flagship, the company has yet again taken the smartphone industry by storm. The number of OnePlus 6 sold in India in the first 10 minutes is proof enough that OnePlus has become one of the top smartphone sellers in the nation. However, the brand is not only known for the new devices that it launches but also for the software support it provides for its older devices.

The latest build for both the OnePlus 3 & 3T bring few handy features for those devices. The following is the release note for the updates as posted on the OnePlus forum by a staff member.

    Launcher

    • Improved search tags in App drawer
    • Added “New installs” category tag in App drawer
    • Improved app list for hidden space and toolbox
    Camera
    • Optimized switching between front and rear camera
    Multimedia
    • Added capability to scrub/seek through AAC audio file timelines

The app drawer will now have improved search tags and a separate category for newly installed apps along with an improved list for apps in hidden space. The software was also optimized to quickly switch between the front and the rear camera. Apart from these features, under the hood bug fixes were also implemented with these Open Beta updates.

One thing users need to consider is that the Open Beta program is meant to test certain features so it is natural to come across bugs and bottlenecks throughout the operating system. With that said, this program is an efficient way for the company to test out new features and for OnePlus to embrace this idea, will make the usage experience better for its buyers.

  • OnePlus 3, 3T Receiving Face Unlock Feature With OxygenOS 5.0.3 Update

OnePlus 3, 3T Receiving Face Unlock Feature With OxygenOS 5.0.3 Update

While OnePlus is riding high on the success of the OnePlus 6, it hasn’t forgotten its older devices. The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, launched in 2016 have already been updated to Android 8 Oreo. The company confirmed that Android 8 Oreo will be the last major update for these two devices but, they will continue to get timely OxygenOS and security updates. The two smartphones have started receiving the new OxygenOS 5.0.3 update which brings in new features including Face Unlock.

Face Unlock was first introduced on the OnePlus 5T. Soon after the launch, the feature received rave reviews for being extremely fast. Its speed was compared to the iPhone X even though the Apple using a 3D facial recognition system and is much more secure than OnePlus’ Face Unlock feature. Nevertheless, the feature has become very popular since then and OnePlus has rolled out the feature to the OnePlus 5, and now the 3 and 3T.

    [amazon_link asins=’B0756Z43QS’ template=’ProductAd’ store=’igyaan-21′ marketplace=’IN’ link_id=’6d9012f5-600d-11e8-82f9-31d09bc691f3′]

Since OnePlus’s Face Unlock is software based, it was possible for the company to roll out this feature to older devices as well. With the new OxygenOS 5.0.3 update, OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users will also be able to unlock their smartphones quickly without using the fingerprint sensor. However, since the fingerprint sensor on the 3 and 3T resides on the front, it really doesn’t seem like a necessary feature.

With the new update, there are new improvements to the Launcher, for example, there is a more refined shelf UI design, a new design for App shortcuts, and more pop-up options for when users long press an app icon. There are other subtle changes as well, like improved positioning accuracy for weather, a new ‘large files’ category in the Files app and more.

If OnePlus 3 or 3T users have not received a notification for an update yet, they can head to Settings > System Updates and then check for a new update. If an update is still not available, fret not, as these are usually phased updates and should come to your device sooner rather than later.

With the new update, the Honor 8 Pro will run EMUI 8.0 which is based on Android 8.0 Oreo. The Honor View10 already runs Android 8 Oreo and is priced at Rs. 29999. The Honor 8 Pro was announced back in April of 2017 and even though it might be a bit late, it is a good news for Honor 8 Pro owners right now.

Recently, the OnePlus 3T also received an update to Android 8 Oreo which is priced at Rs. 24999. The Moto X4 with 6GB RAM went on sale on the 1st of February also runs Android 8 Oreo out of the box.

  • Moto X4 Vs Honor 8 Pro Vs OnePlus 3T

Moto X4 Vs Honor 8 Pro Vs OnePlus 3T

The budget segment of smartphones in India saw a plethora of releases in 2017. Even the flagship segment and affordable flagship segment saw the release of some great devices by Samsung, Apple, OnePlus and Honor. However, the Rs. 20,000-25,000 price category is right now full of old devices that were great at one point. In November 2017, Lenovo-owned Motorola launched the Moto X4 that entered this price segment.

Recently, Motorola launched the 6GB RAM variant of the Moto X4 in India at a price of Rs. 24999. At this price, the Moto X4 has competition from the bygone flagship devices OnePlus 3T and Honor 8 Pro. It is worth noting that only a certified refurbished OnePlus 3T is available on Amazon anymore.

While how people perceive a phone is subjective, the Moto X4 does exude a premium feel. The OnePlus 3T and Honor 8 Pro offer great build quality as well but, the contoured glass back of the Moto X4 feels more premium. The Sterling Blue colour of the Moto X4, thanks to a different hue of blue stands out between the three phones.

Both the Moto X4 and OnePlus 3T run Android 8 Oreo out of the box. The Honor 8 Pro, launched after the OnePlus 3T runs Android 7 Nougat right now with no confirmation from the company regarding an Android 8 Oreo update. OnePlus has confirmed that Android 8 Oreo will be the last major software upgrade for the OnePlus 3T. Since the new Moto X4 runs Android 8 Oreo out of the box, there is a high possibility that it will receive an update to Android P as well.

Under the hood, the OnePlus 3T has the 2016 flagship chipset, Snapdragon 821. The Honor 8 Pro has the Kirin 960 while the Moto X4 has the Snapdragon 630 under the hood. OnePlus 3T has a very capable chipset under the hood which is almost two years old now. Add no software support to that, and the OnePlus 3T doesn’t look like a future-proof phone.

The Honor 8 Pro is already lagging in the software department but, it does offer a customisable skin which a lot of people prefer over stock OS.

One of the USPs of the Moto X4 is its ruggedness. While 2017 flagship phones like the Pixel 2 and OnePlus 5T skipped an IP rating, the Moto X4 has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. The Moto X4 is the only device in this price range that has a dual-camera setup and provides an IP68 rating.

Let’s compare the specifications and see which smartphone provides the most in this price range.

  • OnePlus 3, 3T To Get Face Unlock Feature

OnePlus 3, 3T To Get Face Unlock Feature

OnePlus 5T was launched back in early-November 2017 as a refreshed variant of the OnePlus 5. The OnePlus 5T has a modern design with thin bezels and a tall display and has a different camera setup at the back as well. However, OnePlus introduced another feature in the OnePlus 5T that was a first for the company, Face Unlock. Subsequently, the company announced that the OnePlus 5 would soon get Face Unlock via an OTA update and the company’s co-founder, Carl Pei asked OnePlus 3 and 3T users to voice their opinion and demand the Face unlock feature for their devices.

    https://twitter.com/getpeid/status/946428911688323072

After a couple of weeks of putting out that tweet, Pei has confirmed that the OnePlus 3 and 3T users will get a beta version of Face Unlock via an OTA update. This is possible because OnePlus’ facial recognition is purely software-based, unlike Face ID.

    [amazon_link asins=’B0756ZFXVB’ template=’ProductAd’ store=’igyaan-21′ marketplace=’IN’ link_id=’54df3e1c-f82e-11e7-a722-d954e19208da’]

The intention behind face Unlock on the OnePlus 5T was the convenience, since the fingerprint sensor was moved to the back. Face Unlock is an easier way to unlock your smartphone, however, it is not as secure as other facial recognition systems such as Apple’s. OnePlus conceded this after Face Unlock received great reviews for incredibly fast and accurate and ideal lighting conditions, that this system can not be used for bank transactions or storing data.

    OnePlus 5T

OnePlus is not the only company to come up with its facial recognition system, Huawei unveiled its own technology and even claimed that it is faster and more accurate than Face ID while being secure enough for bank transactions. Samsung has been implemented iris scanning on its smartphone for some time now, and there are reports that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be even more accurate.

  • OnePlus 3 And OnePlus 3T Start Receiving Android 8.0 Oreo Update

OnePlus 3 And OnePlus 3T Start Receiving Android 8.0 Oreo Update

While one would assume that a smartphone maker’s latest and greatest smartphone would have the latest Android OS running, it would be a wrong assumption when it comes to OnePlus. Soon after launching the OnePlus 5T at an event oin New York, the Chinese smartphone maker has rolled out an official update to OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T devices which upgrades the phones’ software to Oxygen OS 5 and Android 8.0 Oreo.

    Hello everyone!

We are pushing out the incremental roll-out of OxygenOS 5.0, our first official Android O OTA update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T.

With the new update, the OnePlus 3 and 3T will get long awaited Android 8.0 Oreo features such as notifications dots and picture-in-picture mode and a few new Oxygen OS features. Other additions are ‘parallel apps’, auto-fill, smart text selection and more.

In the OnePlus launcher, there are new features like notification dots and a new app folder design. OnePlus has also added the option to upload photos directly to Shot on OnePlus. The company has further cleared that the OTA update is ‘incremental’ which means that only a small percentage of users will get the update right away. The blog post continues to state that a broader roll-out of the new software update will begin in some days.

The news is bittersweet for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users. Yes, these users will be the first to get Android 8.0 Oreo on a OnePlus device but, as the company had announced earlier, this is the last major software upgrade for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. OnePlus is known for dropping support for its year-old flagships and this case doesn’t seem any different.

The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are expected to get the Android 8.0 Oreo update some time in early 2018 as the beta testing on the two phones will start in early-December.

  • Your OnePlus Device Is Prone To Hacking

Your OnePlus Device Is Prone To Hacking

Some digging into the deep system apps on OnePlus phones has resulted in the exposure of the vulnerability that OnePlus devices possess. A developer has found an application that can be manipulated into to granting a backdoor root access. In a Twitter thread, the developer explained how he was able to gain root access and surprisingly, the app has been pre-installed on all current OnePlus phones, and on OxygenOS for OnePlus One.

The application is called ‘EngineerMode’ and was developed by Qualcomm for factory testing. It was unveiled that the app potentially renders all OnePlus devices open to backdoor root access. XDADevelopers claim that the application can be accessed through any activity launcher as the app’s activities are exported. OnePlus devices could be rooted on launching ‘DiagEnabled’ activity in the APK with a specified password that was found by decompiling ‘libdoor.so’ with the help of a few cyber-security experts.

OnePlus users can find the app pre-installed by going into Settings > Apps > Menu > Show System Apps and search for EngineerMode in the app list. The user can access manual tests like root status test, GPS test or the main activity by sending a command. Doing this will grant you access to everything including erasing all data. It is alarming how easily someone can get access to your smartphones in this day and age.

OnePlus co-founder Car Lei responded to the tweets:

    https://twitter.com/getpeid/status/930197107255992321

These findings do not come at an ideal time for OnePlus. The Chinese smartphone maker is gearing up to launch the OnePlus 5T on the 16th of November. The device will be OnePlus’ sixth device in its short lifespan and take a design detour from previous OnePlus phones with thin bezels and tall display.

OnePlus was just recently accused of collecting sensitive data of users and the company has barely come out of the aftermath following such serious allegations. It won’t be surprising if OnePlus left the application inside the phones on purpose since it admitted to collecting data from its phones to improve the user experience.

  • Android Oreo Update For OnePlus 3, 3T Beta Testers

Android Oreo Update For OnePlus 3, 3T Beta Testers

When Android 8.0 Oreo was officially announced, OnePlus was one of the first few smartphone makers to announce its imminent availability to it smartphone portfolio. Now, OnePlus has rolled out the Open Beta build based on Android 8.0 for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T devices, signalling a full-blown release isn’t too far away. OnePlus wrote:

We are very excited to announce that we are ready to put out the first Open Beta build based on Android 8.0 for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T devices.

The company also pointed out the issues pertaining to the beta build:

    Known issues:

Fingerprint actions may be slower than you are used to.

Shortcut to access Google Photos is unavailable

Some stability issues with NFC and bluetooth Performance and compatibility of 3rd party apps will continue to be optimised

Back in August, OnePlus subsequently announced that Android 8.0 Oreo will be OnePlus 3 and 3T’s last major software upgrade. This news didn’t go down too well for the owners of the two phones as they were launched recently in 2016 only. But, OnePlus continued its pattern of dropping support to its previous generation flagship phone and concentrate on the new and upcoming flagship smartphone.

This news comes days after the company was exposed to be collecting personal data of its users. While the company has come out and said that users can disable this function, it has still left a blemish on the perception of OnePlus.

  • OxygenOS v4.5.0 Update Rolling Out For OnePlus 3 And 3T

OxygenOS v4.5.0 Update Rolling Out For OnePlus 3 And 3T

OnePlus is known to drop support for its previous year flagships and concentrate solely on its new and shiny flagship of the year. The company did it with the OnePlus 2 when OnePlus 3 and 3t came to the fore. The support for the OnePlus 3 and 3T hasn’t died out yet, and a new update brings in a lot of features to the OnePlus 3/3T from the OnePlus 5.

The new update is 1.5GB in size and brings features like “lift up display,” Gaming Do Not Disturb, low priority notifications, and OnePlus’ Slate font. These features were restricted to the OnePlus 5 only but, have finally trickled down to the 2016 flagship devices. The most interesting features that the update brings, like the “lift up display” and gaming do not disturb mode can be activated from the settings app.

The low priority notifications toggle is exactly what it sounds like. The low priority apps don’t trigger sounds, don’t peek, and don’t set the LED to start blinking. These notifications also won’t appear on the lock screen or the status bar. The ‘lift up display” allows you to glance at your phone’s lock screen by simply lifting it up, without double tapping the screen or pressing the lock/unlock button. Gaming Do Not Disturb mode can be turned on to mute all the notifications when you are gaming on your phone.

The new Slate font introduced in the OnePlus 3 and 3T was first font is already available in OnePlus 5. The company has also brought the secure box to the File Manager app. There are some other minor UI redesigns like a redesigned calling UI in the Phone app, an improved photo editor in the Gallery, the ability to add a ‘Shot on OnePlus’ watermark, and the addition of ‘Shot on OnePlus’ wallpapers. However, the security patch level still remains at August.

    Post by OnePlus forum

The new update will definitely keep the owners of OnePlus 3 and 3T happy especially after the social media backlash the company faced when it announced that the devices won’t receive a major software update after Android 8.0 Oreo.

  • OnePlus 3 Gets Beta Android Oreo Update

OnePlus 3 Gets Beta Android Oreo Update

OnePlus has started rolling out an 800 MB heavy software update for OnePlus 3 closed beta group which updates the phone to Android 8.0 Oreo.

The update as of now is very unstable with many functions like the NFC, WiFi, Bluetooth, and hotspot fairly unstable. OnePlus is trying to roll out a stable update in mid-September. The OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 5 closed beta groups will also start getting this update soon.

OnePlus had earlier announced that an update to Android 8.0 Oreo will be the last major software update for OnePlys 3 and 3T but, the devices will get regular security patches for a longer period. Only the OnePlus 5 as of now, will be updated to next year’s Android P. This news didn’t go down well OnePlus enthusiasts who had just bought either of the devices.

Android 8.0 Oreo was officially announced last month with a lot of upgrades and a few new features. Highlights of new features in Android 8.0 Oreo

    • A new picture-in-picture feature allows users to continue operating the device without interruptions for things like watching a video.
    • Users can now organise notifications into custom channels and modify the alerts for the entire channel.
    • An auto fill framework in the operating system makes the repeated filling of forms easy for the user.
    • Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) can specify a look and feel for the UI by choosing between various icon shapes by using Adaptive Icons
    • A smart sharing feature allows the operating system to guess the context of a photo, and pick the best application to hand the image over to.
    • There are also background execution limits, which ensures that applications running in the background don’t use up a lot of system resources.

OnePlus is notorious for shutting down support on its 1-year-old phones and has continued to do so with its 3 and 3T variants. This new update means that a full-fledged roll out of Android 8.0 Oreo is not too far and the users might get an update by October, which will be fairly quick considering the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will launch in early-October running Android 8.0.
