  • YU Yutopia: Everything We Know So Far

YU Yutopia: Everything We Know So Far

With the launch of the YU Yutopia only a couple of hours away, here’s a quick round-up of everything we know about the device.

There have been lots of rumours about the specs of Yutopia doing the rounds lately. Some of  the most interesting ones include the following:

    Camera:

The smartphone is rumoured to arrive with a whopping 21 MP main camera. Of late, YU has been releasing images on the internet taken by Yutopia’s camera. We took a look at some of them and they seem pretty neat.

A teaser picture taken by the #yutopia
A teaser picture taken by the #yutopia

The front camera would be marked at 8 MP.

    Battery:

YU has released a number of teasers for its upcoming smartphone, and many of them take a jibe at OnePlus and Apple. YU took a dig at specifically the new iPhones in terms of battery claiming to outdo them with Yutopia’s 3,000 mAh battery. Let’s see if the company actually manages to fulfill its promise.Yunique 11

    Chipset:

The YU Yutopia is expected to be powered by a 64 bit class Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, backed by 4 GB of RAM. With an expected price close to 20K, this makes it the cheapest phone to be equipped with this chipset.

    Cyanogen:

The tech world is rife with speculations of trouble in paradise between YU and Cyanogen, the open source operating system. Thought Kirt McMaster, the CTO of Cyanogen has explicitly denied any trouble between the two in the past couple of months, it still looks like it might just be the end of the road for them.Cyanogen 12

Additionally, the launch tomorrow was initially supposed to happen on the 7th of this month, but it was delayed because YU has another product lined up to release with Yutopia. It could perhaps be an OS, a replacement of sorts for Cyanogen. Only time will tell.

Yutopia could also include a 5.2 inch display and 32 GB of expandable internal memory. As the phone makes some big promises with regards to its high resolution camera, powerful battery, enhanced display and metal body, let us hope it’s not all just empty talk.

The company has been delaying the launch of the device which was earlier supposed to come out by the end of this year, but will now see an early 2016 launch. Micromax Canvas Pulse 4G iGyaan 3

On the camera front the device features a 13MP rear with f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP front with f/2.4 aperture. The phone is fitted with a 2100mAh battery and comes with the usual set of connectivity features that includes 3G, GPRS/ EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Micro-USB, and Bluetooth options. The Canvas Pulse 4G runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

We did a quick unboxing and hands-on of the device. The handset feels light in your hand and the size is just right for one-handed tasks. The back plastic panel is smooth and feels great in your hand, though a lack of a firm grip may dissuade some buyers. The metallic sides and rectangular frame adds to the overall aesthetics of device and gives a premium feel to it, which is not a common sight for a device in the price bracket.

    Inside the box:

    • USB wall charger
    • Earphones
    • Screen Protector
    • User Manual

The 5MP front camera also comes with LED flash as well a Gesture Shot which clicks a picture by simply creating a ‘V’ on the screen with your hand.

The UI is pretty fluid and snappy as one would expect from a budget device these days. The app tray leaves the main screen clear, though the device does come with a bunch of bloatware, which you can uninstall. The device runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop and there is no word yet on whether it will get a Marshmallow update.

A 2,100mAh battery isn’t much to brag about here but but basic usage with the device will get you through the day.

  • Xiaomi’s Mi 5 Might Arrive With a Home Button In January 2016

Xiaomi’s Mi 5 Might Arrive With a Home Button In January 2016

A new render of the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5 has been leaked showcasing a first ever, physical home button. Earlier, there were speculations of the device incorporating Qualcomm’s ultrasound fingerprint scanner. The reason why we don’t see the fingerprint scanner is because, an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner doesn’t require sensors or buttons, and can be embedded under the phone’s screen itself.

    Xiaomi Mi 5 Render

The report about the fingerprint scanner was revealed by analyst Pan Jiutang, who further reports that the company has found Qualcomm’s fingerprint scanner to be unstable. Therefore, if Xiaomi decides to use a traditional fingerprint reader, it will most likely be embedded under the home button.

However, this isn’t the only piece of information that the render reveals. It also says that the Xiaomi Mi 5 may be unveiled on the 21st of January 2016, with the actual launch taking place sometime in February. As of now, speculation suggests that the device will be equipped with a 5.2-inch display, powered by the Snapdragon 820 SoC, will offer a version of Force Touch, and Android 6.0 is expected to be pre-installed. The Weibo post also reveals that the smartphone will arrive in two variants, one of which will be priced at $311 and the other at $389. What could the massive price difference mean?

  • Everything You Need to Know About Microsoft’s Lumia 950 and 950 XL

Everything You Need to Know About Microsoft’s Lumia 950 and 950 XL

Microsoft held an event last month where it unveiled a slew of products that included the new flagship smartphones – Lumia 950 and 950 XL. The devices have finally been launched in India. The Windows 10-powered handsets boasts of top notch specs and performance. Here’s everything you need to know about Microsoft’s newest Lumia devices.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snEIjWR4lQw

    Display

The Lumia 950 sports a 5.2-inch AMOLED display with 2560×1440 pixel resolution and a pixel density of 564 ppi for clear, sharp images. The 950 XL, on the other hand, comes with a larger 5.7-inch IPS display with 2560×1440 pixel resolution and a pixel density of 518 ppi. This is the first time Microsoft has used QHD display in its Lumia lineup.

    Design

    Lumia 950 1

Except for the camera housing at the back, the Lumia 950 XL is basically a scaled-up version of the Lumia 950. The devices sport Gorilla Glass 4 on the top while the rest of the body is made of polycarbonate, which is quite grippy. In other words, the plastic feel of the device will find both acceptance and criticism from users. Though the devices are made for a firm grip, the look itself may feel too generic, and one may expect more from a flagship device. It is also likely that Microsoft has focused a lot more on specs than design, perhaps going for affordability.

    Processor

The Lumia 950 is powered by a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor with 3GB of RAM while the 950 XL packs in a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM and  features a liquid cooling technology, similar to the one found in the Surface tablet computer, which will keep the temperature of the processor low.

Both the devices are offered in 32GB storage option and come with a MicroSD slot that allows up to 200GB of expandable storage.

    Camera

    microsoft_lumia_950xl_camera-100620972-orig

Both the devices sport a 20MP primary camera with triple LED flash and fifth generation OIS, all of which promises detailed low light pictures. The devices also come with a 5MP front-facing camera and a physical camera button.

    Software

Even though the devices fail to make a mark on the design and hardware front, the software truly wins the battle for Microsoft. The Lumia devices are the first set of smartphones to feature Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 operating system. Windows 10 is the company’s effort to try and bridge the gap between smartphones, tablets and PCs.

One of the biggest USP of the new Windows 10 is the Continuum feature which lets you “use your Lumia 950 like a PC by connecting it to a bigger screen, keyboard and mouse with Microsoft Display Dock, an optional accessory that enhances the new Windows 10 Continuum experience for phones — and simultaneously charges your device.”

    Lumia-950-performance-jpg

While the above mentioned features are some of the main highlights of the device, the Lumia smartphones also come with standard connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v4.1, NFC, USB Type-C, GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS. Sensors include Accelerometer, Ambient light, Barometer, Gyroscope, Magnetometer and Proximity.

Finally, the 950 and 950 XL are fitted with 3000mAh and 3,340mAh batteries, respectively. The devices are priced at Rs. 43,699 for the 950 and Rs. 49, 399 for the 950 XL. Here’s a detailed spec list of both devices.

Huawei Mate 8 with 6-Inch Display is Now Official

Just a couple of days ago, leaked renders of Huawei’s new Mate 8 smartphone emerged online that showed what the device will look like. The Mate 8 is now official and the device does indeed confirm the renders.

The official specs also confirm earlier rumours. The Mate 8 sports a 6-inch 1080p touchscreen display and will be powered by Huawei’s new Kirin 950 chipset and an ARM Mali-T880 GPU. Furthermore, the handset will be available in 3GB and 4GB of RAM with 32GB and 64GB and 128GB storage variants. The Mate 8 has a large 4,000 mAh battery and will run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

LG Ray is Big on Selfies With an 8 MP Front Camera

Making another addition to the category of mid-range phones is LG’s Ray X190 with a 5.5 inch IPS display. The phone measures a 9.3 mm in thickness and is quite similar in terms of design to a previous LG device, the G4.

The highlight of the phone is the front camera marked at 8 MP. The main camera is of 13 MP with 1080p resolution. Rest of the specs are a little disappointing, making the phone pretty much selfie-oriented. The screen has only a 720p resolution (267ppi); the phone has no LTE and only supports 3G. LG Ray is a dual-SIM phone but the battery is capable of only 10 hours of talk time.LG Ray X190 2

The operating system is Android 5.1 Lollipop and imitates the flagship G-series with features like Knock Code and Gesture Shot. The device packs only a 1 GB of RAM and MediaTek MT6592M chipset with an octa-core processor.

Currently LG Ray X190 is priced at RUB 15,000 in Russia, which is about $232 or Rs. 15,000. The price is likely to be higher when the device arrives in India. However not sure if the phone is meant for you if you are willing to do anything other than clicking selfies with it.
