  • Apple Confirms T2 Chip Limits 3rd-Party Repairs On New Macs

Apple Confirms T2 Chip Limits 3rd-Party Repairs On New Macs

Apple is pretty ruthless when it comes to their business strategies. The company is said to overprice many products accessories. It is also reported that they charge hefty sums of money for simple jobs like a screen or battery replacement. In the past, Apple has tried to limit users from purchasing non-authentic charging cables for the iPhones. Such charging cables would prompt as not supported when plugged in. Recently, Apple launched a new series of Macs with a built-in T2 security chip. The company claims it increases the security of devices but 3rd party repairers like iFixit profess otherwise. 3rd party repairers suggest that this is a move to limit the repair of Apple devices by non-certified technicians.

    What Is The T2 Chip?

The T2 Chip is an IC (Integrated Circuit) which acts as a co-processor to the main CPU on Macs. According to Apple, the chip stores sensitive user data like the Touch ID details and cryptographic key which are essential for a device to boot. But, the T2 chip is not only limited to this and it is much more capable than basic security features. It can even leave a Mac device inoperable if the user opts for 3rd party components or repairs.

    What’s Noteworthy

Recently, TheVerge asked Apple to comment on these allegations, which the company did reply to. The company agreed that the T2 Chip would lock down a Mac device if non-Apple certified service provider fixed a device. It is for the first time that Apple has openly acknowledged the fact. The company added that the T2 chip is critical for features like responding to ‘Hey Siri’ commands. It also prevents the microphones to be taken over by remote hackers when the lid of the device is closed. Conclusively, the chip can communicate with other parts on Mac devices, and Apple can control these devices however they wish. Whether in a positive manner like tightening the security or in a negative way by overcharging customers for repairs.

As the name suggests, it will be a low spec variant of the upcoming flagship Galaxy S10.

    Galaxy S10 Lite Specifications:

The Galaxy S10 Lite will feature a flat Infinity-O display which the company recently showcased at their developer’s conference. The Infinity O is Samsung’s effort in creating a high screen-to-body ratio display. It has a circular cutout for the front-facing selfie camera and is surely a new approach when compared to the usual notch. The smartphone will have dual-rear cameras, exact details of which are unavailable at the moment.

The Galaxy S10 Lite will have a side mounted fingerprint sensor. It might be similar to the side mounted fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy A7 which also doubles as the power button. In terms of storage, the smartphone will be available in 3 RAM/ROM variants which are as follows:

    • 4 GB RAM +64 GB ROM
    • 6 GB RAM +64 GB ROM
    • 6 GB RAM +128 GB ROM

However, the support for a microSD card is unclear as of now. Talking about the chipset, Ben Geskin suggests that the device will either have the Snapdragon 845 or the upcoming Snapdragon 8150. The Snapdragon 845 is an Octa-Core SoC based on 10 nm architecture whereas the Snapdragon 8150 is based on 7 nm architecture. Hence, it is a faster and efficient processor than the Snapdragon 845.

  • Analyst Predicts iPhone XR Shipments To Be 30 % Lower

Analyst Predicts iPhone XR Shipments To Be 30 % Lower

iPhone XR is the cheapest iPhone sold by Apple, from its latest lineup. Except for the Liquid Retina display, single camera, 3 GB RAM, IP 67 rating and lack of 3D Touch, it gets almost all the same specs as the more expensive iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. The smartphone definitely catches a lot of attention due to its funky colours and low price, but that is not enough to rake in high sales, claims an analyst. Ming-Chi Kuo is a senior writer at Macrumors and is also an analyst at TF Securities, a financial services group in Asia-Pacific region. The analyst gathers information from Apple’s Asian supply chain to further pass it to his clients.

The analyst claims that the demand for Apple’s iPhone XR is less than expected and which might result in 30% lower shipments. Previously, it was estimated that Apple will ship 100 million units of the iPhone XR between Q4 of 2018 and Q3 of 2019. But now it is reckoned that the company will only be able to ship out around 70 million units of the handset during the given period.

Top factors affecting its demand are:

    • Price of iPhone XR
    • Competition from other smartphones

Additionally, the report points that overall sales of iPhones might also decline by 15-20 % in Q1 of 2019 compared to the this year. The demands might fall short, however, the iPhone XR is definitely a smartphone with solid performance, sturdy build, and top-notch specifications. For reference:

Apple’s New Patent Show’s Off An In-Display Camera

With the notch being present on two generations of iPhones, everyone was wondering as to what will be Apple’s next step towards a bezel-less display. Well, we might have the answer now. A patent, filed by Apple back in June, has finally been approved. The patent shows a smartphone with just a camera cut-out in the display.

    The Bezel-Less Future

Apple isn’t the first company to patent such a design, though. This was seen in patents by Samsung, LG and even Asus. Huawei recently patented a design with just a cut-out for the earpiece. While these designs were only limited to smartphones, the patent by Apple seems to have much more.

The patent describes a method with which a camera window can be integrated with the ‘cover glass’. Obviously the cover glass being referred to here is the display. Additionally it mentions only LCD displays as an example. This may not mean that OLED displays are completely eliminated. But, we can expect that the technology might be restricted to just LCD displays as of now.

It is possible that Apple may just introduce it in its 6.1 inch LCD iPhone coming next year. Which might be the successor to the iPhone XR. However, there is also a possibility that the tech giant won’t hold back. It might ensure that its flagship devices carry the latest design language as well. Considering the fact that the patent was filed back in June, the company might have figured out a way to integrate it into OLED displays as well.

    Not Just iPhones

Another interesting bit of information we get from the patent is the fact that it mentions not only mobile phones but also other hand held devices. These include larger devices such as portable computers, tablet commuters, etc. This could mean that Apple might not limit this design to only the iPhones. It might extend it to iPads, MacBooks and iMacs as well. This is quite probable as Apple introduced a totally new design language with the latest iPad Pro.

Whether this patent will be seen through and will give us a device which goes into production is still a huge question. But, considering the pace at which the smartphone industry is moving forward, it is safe to assume that companies will no longer hold back on any innovations they have.

Foldable phones have been rumored for years and finally, Samsung showcased a working prototype of one such device in their developer’s conference. The device will most probably be called the Samsung Galaxy F, owing to its foldable screen. Recently, in an interview with Yonhapnews (a South Korean news agency), Samsung said that the Galaxy F will be commercially available in the first half of 2019.

The company also claims to sell at least 1 million units of the foldable phone within the first year of its launch. According to sources, the smartphone will have a hefty price tag of $ 1,770 (around 2 million Korean Won). Any technical specification except the screen size of the Galaxy F is currently unavailable. Recently, a YouTube channel with the username ‘Concept Creator’ has shared a concept video of the foldable Galaxy F.

    Galaxy F Concept

The concept video shows a smartphone that folds out into a sleek looking tablet. The tablet mode has a 4.2:3 aspect ratio, edge-to-edge display with rounded corners and negligible bezels. In the smartphone mode, it has a smaller, 4.3-inch infinity display with thick top and bottom bezels. The front-facing selfie camera is present on the top bezel of the phone. The device has a clamshell style curved hinge that gives it the folding capabilities.

The power button & volume rockers are placed on the left side when the device is in phone mode. The Galaxy F concept also has a USB Type-C port, 3.5 mm headphone jack & dual bottom firing speakers. Additionally, the device also has dual rear cameras along with an LED flash and unidentified sensor.

Again, it must be kept in mind that this is just a fan-made concept and the real device may not be the same.

  • Foldable Samsung Phone Will Launch In First Half of 2019

Foldable Samsung Phone Will Launch In First Half of 2019

Lately, Samsung has been in the news because of their smartphone with a foldable display. The company gave a glimpse of the foldable phone recently at their Developer Conference held in San Francisco. The president of Samsung Mobile division, DJ Koh in a press briefing said that the foldable phone will be available within the first half of the next year. Additionally, he also claimed that Samsung plans to sell at least 1 million foldable phones in 2019.

Yonhapnews, a South Korean news agency suggests that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S10 flagship smartphone in February next year. This will be followed by the foldable phone. The foldable phone, allegedly called the Galaxy F will launch in March along with a 5G variant of the Galaxy S10. Presumably, the foldable Galaxy F will not support 5G connectivity.

Reports also profess that the company will showcase a working prototype of the Galaxy F smartphone at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2019. The South Korean news agency also claims that the smartphone will cost $ 1,770 (around Rs 1,29,024 ). The steep price of the smartphone indicates that it might not be a mass market handset.

    Galaxy F Features

The biggest highlight of the Galaxy F will definitely be its foldable display. Samsung says that the new smartphone will have a 4.6-inch display in regular mode and a 7.4-inch screen when unfolded. The foldable smartphone will also support Android Q’s continuity feature. It means when a user is running an app on a foldable device, it will seamlessly transfer between the two screen layouts. Which are the smaller, smartphone-like folded screen, and the larger, tablet-style experience when it is unfolded.

Huawei Files Patent For Smartphone With An In-Display Earpiece

Huawei is a China-based tech giant that also manufactures smartphones. The company is working hard and continuously developing new technologies. They are the world’s first company to make a 7nm Android chipset, the Kirin 980. And recently the company has filed a patent for a smartphone with an earpiece cutout in the display.

    Earpiece Hole Display

The recently filed patent by Huawei illustrates a smartphone with an earpiece cavity in the display. It is an effort to maximise the screen real estate without having to opt for a slider like the one present on Mi Mix 3 and Honor Magic 2. The smartphone in the patent has extremely thin bezels which indicate the device will use swipe gestures to navigate to different menus. The image shows that the power button and volume rockers are present on the right side of the smartphone.

The patent also discloses that the smartphone will have a rear-mounted fingerprint and not an in-display one like the OnePlus 6T. Additionally, the device in the patent has a USB Type-C port at the bottom and a 3.5 mm audio jack at the top. The back of the smartphone has a capsule shape ridge which most probably will house dual cameras and an LED flash.

  • Android Q Will Have Multi-Resume Support For Apps

Android Q Will Have Multi-Resume Support For Apps

Google’s Android Dev Summit 2018 was held in California during November 7 & 9. Lead Developers demonstrated a lot of changes the upcoming Android Q will have. One key change is Multi-Resume support for applications. The developers are provided with tools with which they can integrate the feature in Android 9.0 Pie apps as well but, it will be mandatory in Android Q.

    What Is Multi-Resume?

Running simultaneous applications on an Android smartphone is not new. It has been available since the release on Android N (Nougat) in the form of split-screen. It allows users to run two simultaneous apps side-by-side. However, the feature has had limitations up till now. Earlier, the system would pause one app while the other is in use. But, it is soon going to change with the upcoming Multi-Resume feature.

The new feature will allow users to keep multiple apps running live on-screen. It means the users will be able to interact with more than one app concurrently without having the system to pause the other app. This revolutionary feature will make it very much equivalent to a traditional desktop working environment. This feature might not be as useful on a small screen device but, will surely boost productivity on a larger screen tablet.

    Possibilities With Multi-Resume:
    • Video Conferencing: The new feature will open new possibilities for video conferencing. The users will be able to talk with their contacts while still having access to relevant content in another window. This will be beneficial for business personnel who are usually making online meetings via Skype or similar apps.
    • Drag & Drop Files: Although Google has not talked anything about the possibility of this feature. This can be another key advantage of Multi-Resume support.
    • Browsing & Maps: The user can even browse the web and search for relevant details with ongoing navigation.

OnePlus To Launch A 5G Phone In 2019

5G, the big leap for smartphones is approaching fast and the companies are working hard to reap the early bird advantage. Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has already launched their 5G compatible Mi Mix 3. Moreover, OnePlus has already announced they will launch a 5G smartphone in the year 2019. Recently, the company revealed to Cnet Spain that the 5G OnePlus will not be the OnePlus 7. In fact, the upcoming smartphone will be part of a completely different series.

The Successor To The OnePlus 6T?

OnePlus refreshes their flagship smartphones twice a year hence, the OnePlus 7 will launch before Q2 of 2019 ends. Most notably, OnePlus 7, the next flagship will not have 5G support. The company revealed that the OnePlus 7 will remain their flagship phone. As the new 5G technology will not only bump the price of the phone, but it will also have limited carriers initially. So, the company predicts to not sell as many units of the same as the former.

The company officials explained that the 5G smartphone which is due to launch in early 2019 will be a part of a different lineup that will complement the flagship series. The smartphone is set to launch in early 2019, we feel that the company might announce it during the MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2019 which will be held in Barcelona starting 25th February.

  • Samsung’s New Mid-Range ‘Galaxy M’ Series Leaked

    Samsung’s New Mid-Range ‘Galaxy M’ Series Leaked

Earlier reports had suggested that the Samsung will combine its Galaxy J, Galaxy C and Galaxy On series into a single ‘Galaxy M’ series. The M series is set to be the new mid-range series from Samsung. It might focus on producing more value-for-money phones. This move from Samsung comes in the wake of cut-throat competition from Chinese manufacturers who are hurting the Korean giant’s smartphone sales big time, especially in South Asia.

    The New Galaxy M

Now, a leak ‘confirms’ that two devices from this series are on the way. Bearing the model numbers SM-M205F and SM-M305F, they have been dubbed the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30. The leak also suggest that there are many more Galaxy M devices on the way. The source also claims to know the storage variants of the devices. The SM-M205F has 32 GB and 64 GB storage variants while the SM-M305F has 64 GB and 128 GB variants. Both the devices have dual SIM variants, while some countries might see the launch of single SIM variants as well.

Another recent report also suggests that the devices will not have AMOLED panels and will instead carry LCD panels. The inclusion of LCD panels will ensure that Samsung can keep the prices of these models down and focus on providing more features. The fact that Samsung mid-range phones lacked attractive specs was a huge complaint from consumers in the past. The tech giant maybe looking to change that by cutting corners in areas such as the display.
