  • OnePlus Embraces the Future, Announces OnePlus 2 Will Use USB Type-C

OnePlus Embraces the Future, Announces OnePlus 2 Will Use USB Type-C

OnePlus has been building anticipation about its new smartphone, OnePlus Two, for quite a few weeks. Earlier this week, we reported that OnePlus Two will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor, allowing the phone to function faster. Today, the company announced in a tweet that OnePlus Two will use Type-C USB port.

OnePlus Two will become the first flagship phone from a mainstream company to use Type-C USB port. However, OnePlus is not the first company to incorporate the Type-C USB port in its phone – the title goes to LeTV’s One Max. We were expecting Apple, which is currently working on the iPhone 6s, to incorporate it in its next smartphone.

In March, Apple announced that the MacBook will use a single Type-C USB port. Google also accommodated the support for Type-C in the second Chrombook Pixel.

    Apple Macbook 4
The latest Apple MacBook incorporates only a USB Type C Port

The USB-C connector is one reversible port that takes care of power, data transfers, and display output. It is slim and compatible with almost every device with standard USB ports. This relieves customers of four or six connecting ports that demand your system’s space and gives manufacturers freedom to trim down the size of machines and, hence, weight. A USB-C connector is the one standard solution to asymmetrical USB jacks, except for audio. It’s convenient to use and has the potential to replace all jacks.

This announcement by OnePlus is a latest addition to what we already know about OnePlus Two – that it is priced at around Rs. 25, 000 and will run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor, making the phone capable of streaming 4K Ultra HD videos and more. The company is expected to announce the launch date for the phone soon.

  • Rumours Suggest, Apple Plans to Remove the Home Button on its iPhone

Rumours Suggest, Apple Plans to Remove the Home Button on its iPhone

Apple is reportedly working on an iPhone design that will remove the iconic home button. A recent post on the website, AppleInsider, claims that the company is planning to replace the home button with a virtual one. The website also claims that the redesign wouldn’t take place for at least two years and may not be seen in the next version of the iPhone.

    Touch-ID-in-action

Apple has made Touch ID, its fingerprint recognition feature, available on every device launched since iPhone 5s. The company has integrated Touch ID onto many of its services and is developing more uses for it. As a result, it will not ditch the feature in favour of a virtual home button, just yet.

To make the virtual home button possible, Apple is working on integrating Touch ID into the iPhone’s display. According to AppleInsider, patents have been filed which would allow people to scan their fingerprints on the display itself. If the company is successful in integrating Touch ID onto the display, the home button could be replaced by an on-screen button. Until then, Apple’s plan of having a virtual home button remains long-term.

  • Microsoft Again Clarifies About Who Gets Windows 10 for Free

Microsoft Again Clarifies About Who Gets Windows 10 for Free

A few days ago, Microsoft declared that anyone who has signed up and installed the preview version of Windows 10 would get a free upgrade. It seemed an easy way out for those who were using the pirated or non-genuine versions of Windows XP/Vista/7/8.1. In a recent blog post, Microsoft has clarified that the method is not as simple as it seems.

According to Microsoft’s Gabe Aul, those who have installed the Windows 10 preview will get a free copy, as long as they keep receiving the pre-release updates. “Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program,” Gabe wrote in the blog post.

    Tech-Preview_Start-menu

If a user installs the preview version, upgrades to the final version on July 29th and then opts-out of pre-release updates, he/she will not receive the free copy. According to Microsoft, the preview build will expire without the updates. The user then either has to buy a new license to keep the build or roll back to the previous OS version. “This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems,” Gabe wrote.

Genuine Windows 7 or 8.1 users will still receive a Windows 10 free upgrade on July 29th.

Massive Moto G (Gen 3) Leak Reveals a 13MP Rear Camera

Moto G is one of the most recognizable phones Motorola has ever made. The affordable smartphone relaunched the company and drew huge sales in India, making Motorola a household name. Today, a set of images and a video has been posted which provides more details about the upcoming Moto G, the 3rd generation.

The images, which were posted by a Google+ user, Nao Lee, have been said to come from “a Chinese digital forum.” The images show the front and the back of the device, which looks similar to the previous versions of Moto G. The phone identifies itself as “XT1453” and runs on Android 5.1.1.

    21 - 4

The video, which has since been removed, showed the specifications of the phone. According to the video, Moto G3 is similar to Moto G (2nd Generation). Moto G3 will run on Snapdragon 410 processor, an improvement from the Snapdragon 400 processor. The camera has also been upgraded. Moto G3 will now sport a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera, a vast improvement from 8 and 2 megapixel rear and front camera. As for the rest, the new phone will sport a 5-inch display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, LTE, and a microSD slot, same as Moto G (2nd Gen). This contradicts the early rumours about Moto G3 running on a 64-bit 1.7GHz Snapdragon 610 SoC along with 2GB of RAM.While the Moto G (Gen 2) was a vast improvement over its predecessor, that might not be the case with Moto G (Gen 3). It is to be noted that Motorola is yet to officially announce the specifications and the phone may turn out to a be a far superior product than expected.

  • What We Can Learn From the Taylor Swift-Apple Controversy

What We Can Learn From the Taylor Swift-Apple Controversy

Taylor Swift is currently one of the biggest music icons in the world, as evident from the fact that her last album sold more than four million copies worldwide and in all, she has won seven Grammy awards and 22 Billboard awards. So, it matters when one of the most influential music artists in the world says she has a problem with Apple Music, the new streaming service launched by Apple.

In her recent open letter to Apple, Swift explains why she would hold back her new album, 1989, from Apple Music. She wrote, “Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.”

Swift’s open letter points to the statement given by Apple executive Robert Kondrk, who said that the company won’t pay the artists during the three month trial period. The company would later make it up to the artists by paying them higher amounts than its rival, Spotify. A few hours after Swift’s open later was published, Apple VP, Eddy Cue tweeted that the artists will be paid during the three month trial period, which Swift positively responded to.

Swift’s concern is in a right place. Most people nowadays want to access media without paying, which leaves services like Spotify and YouTube with no other option but to provide free streaming with advertisements. As a result, streaming generates less royalties than a CD sale or digital download would’ve generated.

    apple music
Apple won’t pay the artists during the three month trial period of Apple Music

Although streaming would not affect the music sales of Swift or the likes, as she points out, it is “about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success..about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt.. but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs”.

Artists depend on the royalties generated from the sale of CDs and downloads. Their only source of income get affected due to the amount of money generated from streaming. Hence, artists and record labels are pushing for subscription based music services, which they believe will be more stable when it comes to generating royalties.

    taylor swift

This is not the first time artists have spoken out against the streaming services. Recently, rapper Jay-Z launched his own streaming service, Tidal, which is said to be the first artist-owned streaming service. He criticized YouTube and Spotify for not giving enough money to the artists. In November 2014, Swift removed all of her old albums from Spotify over the issue of royalties.

Apple’s recent move is a temporary resolve, since it is in a position to pay the artists during the trial period. The success of Apple Music will be determined when people actually subscribe. To keep the music industry alive, a model has to be devised which would allow people to pay reasonable rates and at the same time allow artists to earn fair royalties in return. Higher rates can lead to piracy, which would again affect the artists. An effort has to be made to persuade people to subscribe to music services and support the artists. Till such things happen, artists have to speak out.

We like how Taylor Swift put it  – “We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.”

  • This Might be the Easiest Way to Tell Your Friends You’re ‘Free’ to Hang Out

This Might be the Easiest Way to Tell Your Friends You’re ‘Free’ to Hang Out

On an odd Friday night, when you decide you’d rather spend the night in, you want some company to watch a movie or grab a quiet meal. What do you do? You don’t want to spam the handful of close buddies who might already have their plans set for the evening. Nor can you put up a status on a social networking site, lest a creepy acquaintance accepts your invitation and lands up to your door.

Well, here is a solution to that: the ‘Free’ App. This app shows you a list of your friends who are free. It will allow you to share your availability to coordinate easily and make plans with friends. Developed by Danny Trinh, a former lead designer at Path, a social app, he explains:

With smartphones, we’re more connected than ever—there’s Gchat, WeChat, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, and more—but as connection has become the default, we’ve lost ways to announce, “I’m up to hang.” In a world where everyone’s online all the time, what’s the actual availability signal on top of that? That’s what we’re trying to build. Put another way, now that we carry chat on us at all times, the green dot is assumed.

Once downloaded, the app asks you to enter your number, register an account and provide your name, a username and your email address. You can set up your photo and use a given list of filters. The app then syncs your contacts.

    img_3184-png

You can let your friends, who might be nearby at that time, know that you are ready to go out (green), flexible (yellow) or busy at that moment (red).  However, for the app to work, you must enable location services on your phone. You can also attach a message, tag friends you are with and select a place and time, just like Facebook. Once you set up your first status, you have the option to choose which buddies to send it to and for how long they can see the message or status. These statuses go into Free’s feed that you can quickly flick through to all your friends’ plans, and disappear the next morning.

    press-phone

True, there are so many social networking apps right now, like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter. But the reason Free might win is that it cuts out the clutter to focus back on in-person communication. For now, the app is available only for iOS devices.

  • OnePlus 2 Will Not be as Affordable as the One

OnePlus 2 Will Not be as Affordable as the One

A while back, multiple sources cited that OnePlus would be hosting a mega-event in July, where the much-awaited OnePlus 2 would launch. However, recently, OnePlus ruled out all rumours and stated that the upcoming OnePlus 2 would be making its debut in the third quarter of this year.

As the release date draws closer, OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, himself is announcing the features of the smartphone, bit by bit. He has already confirmed that the OnePlus 2 will be loaded with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 under the hood. This processor is capable of streaming 4K Ultra HD videos, high-resolution 3D games and has an enhanced battery life. The forum also read that the overheating issue of the processor has also been resolved with the new version of the SoC.

I am proud to share with you that our eagerly-awaited OnePlus 2 will come loaded with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor, engineered for OnePlus and our next generation flagship phone. Just like we did with the OnePlus One, our engineers debated endlessly over which CPU would be the perfect fit for the 2.

Two months back, Pete Lau hinted the price of the OnePlus Two as roughly around Rs. 25,000. This is around Rs. 3,000 more than the original OnePlus One at launch. This may be because the Snapdragon 810 v2.1 costs 60% more than the Snapdragon used in the OnePlus One. A recent OnePlus blog reads that the 810 is much more powerful than its younger counterpart, the 801, and is a much more expensive component. Hence, according to the post, the minimum cost of the OnePlus Two will be higher than $322 (Rs. 20,500 approx.)

From what is known till date, the OnePlus 2 will sport a 5.5-inch 2K display and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 along with 4GB RAM. Rumours also claim that the device could have 16 or 64 GB of internal memory, 16 MP main camera, 5 MP front snapper, and a  Li-Po 3300 mAh battery. The OnePlus Two will run on Cyanogen OS, as the differences between Cyanogen and the Chinese smartphone firm have been settled, and the cases have been withdrawn by mutual approval. The addition of Cyanogen on the next OnePlus device might help drive the sales of the handset.

The affordable price of the OnePlus One was a key element in its success. However, if OnePlus manages to deliver a smartphone with top notch specs, a slightly higher price tag may not be a major deal breaker.

  • Apple is Already Prepping Apple Watch 2; Here’s What We Know

Apple is Already Prepping Apple Watch 2; Here’s What We Know

It’s been just two months since the arrival of Apple’s luxury wearable and the tech firm is already developing its successor. Yes, following the massive success of Apple Watch, the Cupertino-based organization is reportedly building its next-gen model, the Apple Watch 2. Sources close to Apple disclosed its plans of launching an improved iWatch version, which is said to reduce the dependence of the wearable on iPhone.

    apple watch 2 5

If we go by the revelations made by 9to5mac, the next Apple Watch will sport a camera on top of the watch bezel, to provide users with the facility of video calling. Watch owners can make or receive FaceTime calls while on the go, and there is no need to slip an extra gadget in your pocket. The inclusion seems rational as the company laid the ground for audio assimilation with watchOS 2.0, launched at their annual developer’s conference. A camera on the smartwatch is not a first, as Samsung has already incorporated on the Galaxy Gear.

As we said earlier, the second-gen Apple Watch will have minimal dependency on the iPhone, and will be able to perform maximum functions solely. Replacing the currently embedded Wi-Fi, a chip with the potential to locate a user’s location will be installed. Things like ordinary conversation can take place with the integration of a dynamic wireless chipset, but substantial actions such as software updates, media files synchronization, and few more will indeed require an iPhone.

    Apple watch Features Design 15

The battery is what’s likely to remain unchanged in the next Apple Watch. The battery of first-gen watch has received positive reviews, and since customers are happy with its fuelling power, Apple aims to devote attention to other features.

It is also learnt from the same source that Apple might add new more options within the price range of $1,000 and $10,000. More options means more colour variants. Apple is speculated to consider the following colour options for the Watch – titanium, platinum tungsten, and palladium.

  • After the iPhone, the Apple Watch Might Soon be “Assembled in India”

After the iPhone, the Apple Watch Might Soon be “Assembled in India”

Narendra Modi’s Make in India campaign is growing at a steady pace. After companies like Celkon, one of the leading cell phone players and Mercedes-Benz have set up their manufacturing plants on Indian soil, Taiwan’s Quanta Computer Inc has commented saying that they are considering establishing their manufacturing plant in India. Quanta Computer Inc is one of the top laptop makers and assembly plant of Apple’s high-tech Apple Watch.

Quanta Vice President, C.C. Leung, said that the senior officials are gathering materials for evaluation and are considering the idea.

    apple watch 2 4

After Foxconn, Quanta is the largest maker of iPhones and iPads for Apple. Foxconn Technology, which is one of the world’s largest contract manufacturers of electric products, is trying to develop 10-12 facilities in India, including factories by 2020. The Taiwan-based tech giant said that the company is in talks to manufacture Apple iPhones in India. The move would help Foxconn decrease stimulating labour costs in China, possibly lower prices for iPhones sold in India and transfer the site of the manufacturing assembly closer to its buyers in the world’s third-largest smartphone market.

Quanta Inc has no present investment plans for now. Leung is examining several considerations like transportation convenience and access to ports in India. But, we hope for the best, as the initiative looks promising. It is understandable that many more companies will join in soon; creating job opportunities and improving the overall economic well-being of the masses.

    make in india

Make in India’ is an initiative that was started back in September 2014 by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The primary objective of this initiative is to create manufacturing firms within India to create more job opportunities and enhance the skills of the people of India across different sectors like automobile, aviation, biotechnology, defence manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, ports, railways, textile and much more. With this initiative, the Government of India hopes to bring in high-quality standards and minimise the impact on the environment.

  • Force Touch and New Casing Material to Make iPhone 6s Wider, Taller, Stronger

Force Touch and New Casing Material to Make iPhone 6s Wider, Taller, Stronger

Earlier this year, Apple’s next-generation iPhone was reported to come with the ‘Force Touch’ feature, which made a debut with the Apple Watch and the new 13-inch MacBook. The inclusion was widely expected and now, a new report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities has affirmed its existence stating that the enforcement of Force Touch on iPhone 6s might even add to the thickness of the device.

Force Touch is a brainy touch feature which senses the level of force applied on the screen. It uses tiny electrodes around the flexible Retina display to distinguish between a light tap and a deep press, which trigger instant access to a range of contextually specific controls. This feature adds the possibility of embedding more gestures onto the device.

    iPhone 6 Plus 13

Kuo argued that Force Touch will lead to the forthcoming iDevice (tentatively titled iPhone 6s) being wider, taller, and thicker. It is speculated to increase the dimensions of the phone by 0.15 millimetres crosswise as well as in length, and 0.2mm in thickness.

As per Kuo, Apple will employ Series 7000 Aluminium, introduced with Apple Watch, on the next-generation iPhones. The custom metal is 60 percent stronger than the regular aluminium and has just one-third the density of stainless steel.

Along with presenting fact about the redesigned casing material, Ming-Chi reiterates that the iPhone 6s will be coming in a rose gold colour option. He also believes that few more colour options available with the phone will be yellow gold and dark space grey.

Hands On with the LG G4

Unveiled back in April, the latest flagship from LG’s stable, LG G4, is finally out in India today. As scheduled, the Korean electronics maker today released the premium handset in the country, while pre-bookings have already kicked off on the LG India website. The handset is available with a price tag of Rs. 51,500.

We got a chance to get our hands on the device and here’s our first experience:

    Lg G4 Hands On 14

The LG G4 looks premium with its leather-clad backplate. It serves a dual purpose – the smartphone looks amazing, and at the same time it provides a better grip. The leatherback is resistant to water, to help prevent staining and to allow it to wear naturally over time.

    Lg G4 Hands On 10

The G4 features a 5.5-inch Quad HD IPS LCD display (2560x1440p resolution) that uses quantum dot technology. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

    Lg G4 Hands On 4

LG hasn’t provided touch capacitive buttons on the botton, instead they are on the screen itself. The company says that it is a first on the phone and results in higher brightness and contrast.

At the bottom of the handset is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microphone hole and a charging port. The top has a secondary noise cancellation microphone and an IR (Infrared Blaster). Surprisingly, there aren’t any buttons on either the left or the right-hand side. The back boasts the massive camera, power button as well as the volume rockers.

The processor fitted on the device is a 1.8GHz Hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor with Adreno 418 GPU. LG says that the Snapdragon 808 churns out power similar to Samsung’s octa-core Exynos chip.

    Lg G4 Hands On 6

With 3GB RAM, the internal storage space of the G4 is 32GB, which can be expanded via a MicroSD card up to 2TB. As teased, the smartphone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

  • Apple to Use Better Battery Tech in its Upcoming iPhone 6s

Apple to Use Better Battery Tech in its Upcoming iPhone 6s

Post the launch of iPhone 6 and its bigger sibling, Apple fans have awaited the release of the improved iPhone 6s. The handset is speculated to bring major changes including an upgraded RAM, enhanced 12MP camera and the newly introduced Force Touch. Although the innards have been beefed up, the tech giant continues to push the envelope by making slimmer smartphones. Going by this approach, the upcoming addition to iPhone 6 series will be thinner than the previously launched iterations.

Now we hear that a battery breakthrough that failed to attain the much-deserved hype at the previous Apple Event will fuel the next iPhone, making it last long between two subsequent charges. The innovative battery was patented by Apple in 2012, but came into practice in 2015 with MacBook.

    apple battery patent

The next-gen battery goes beyond the barrier of the conventional rectangular slab type and can take any shape. This battery consists of thin electrode sheets stacked on one another. These electrodes are cells of different sizes and are installed in the specific contours of the enclosure. This way, developers would be able to utilize the reserved battery space to embed an LTE chip.

    macbook patent

This arrangement gives 35 percent more battery cell capacity, using every single millimeter of space available in the enclosure. The technology is currently powering the super-slender 13-inch MacBook that has been engineered to give 9 hours of standby on web browsing and up to 10 hours on iTunes Movie Playback. By incorporating the same battery technology, the Apple iPhone 6s is expected to provide better battery cycles.

With the redesigned batteries rooted in iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus, the future products will be slimmer than the latest model with 6.9mm thickness. More reported specifications of the device include a 2GB RAM and a 12MP dual-lens camera. A new design using an improved casing material is expected on the handset. One more microphone is said to be added near the new handset’s speakers in an attempt to improve sound quality.

As every year, Apple’s upcoming flagships would be released in the month of September.

  • Hands On with the Micromax Canvas Sliver 5

Hands On with the Micromax Canvas Sliver 5

Micromax’s new entrant into the smartphone rat race, is not really new. The Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 is the Indian manufacturer’s slim device to take on the other slim phones. The upside, the Canvas Sliver 5 is 5.1mm end to end with no bumps or depressions. The frame is made from Aircraft grade aluminium and the front as well as the back is glass.

    Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 12

Specs wise, a few disappointments can be made out easy. For the price of Rs. 17,999, Micromax has included a Snapdragon 410 chipset, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB non-expandable storage and an 8 MP camera.

The front has a paltry 720p display along with Gorilla Glass 3, the battery is a mere 2000mAh. There is not a lot on offer here apart from the slim profile and the lightweight design.

The software is mostly stock Android 5.0.2 with some installed software, most of it is easily uninstalled. A flagship was expected from Micromax today, but the Rs. 17,999 price is might be the reason Canvas Sliver 5 remains on shelves. At a time where the world’s smartphone makers are battling to offer maximum at minimum rates, the Canvas Sliver 5 seems to fall short with average specifications. Besides, users have the choice to spend Rs. 2,000 extra and buy the OnePlus One (64GB) at Rs. 19,998. For that small amount, you would get a better camera, processor and a massive (multimedia-friendly) display.

Micromax Launches its Super Slim and Light Flagship, Priced at Rs. 17,999

Micromax’s Jailbreak event kicked off in New Delhi and the firm brought before us the world’s slimmest smartphone. Adding to its Canvas line-up, Micromax introduced its flagship device, the Canvas Sliver 5, holding a thickness of 5.1mm end-to-end. The handset joins the list of the world’s till-date “slimmest phone” title holders – Oppo R5 (6.9mm), Elife 5.1 (5.15mm), and Vivo X5 Max (4.75mm).

Not only is it slim, it’s lighter than any phone released till date. Micromax claims that the Canvas Sliver 5 weighs a mere 97 grams. It accommodates Aircraft grade aluminum that helps maintain its feather-like weight. Along with that, touch sensitivity is integrated onto the screen, helping it acquire the thinness.

That was all about its exterior specifications. The phone is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB DDR3 RAM. Canvas Sliver 5 is 4G/LTE enabled, which means overall, it might be a smooth and fast device. The display size stands at 4.8-inch with 720p resolution. The device, running on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, comes with 16GB internal storage space with no expandability option.

    Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 1

Going by the camera specifications, the new Canvas flagship will hold an 8MP Sony IMX219 sensor on the back with Blue Glass Filter, Professional Mode and Night mode. The Blue Glass Filter offers better pictures by restricting infrared. Micromax has provided a 5MP front camera. A Dirac HD Sound system takes care of the audio quality. A battery of 2000mAh is fitted to the device, which according to Micromax is sufficient for the smartphone. The phone will be available in two colour options – white and black.

Besides this, the homegrown company announced additional offers. With Airtel connection, users will get double the data pack. Also, one of the major highlight of this smartphone, all buyers will get a guaranteed 7-day after-sale service, in case of any issue with the phone. Micromax has priced it at Rs. 17,999.
