LG Will Launch A Smartwatch With An Inband Camera

The market for smart wearables and smartwatches is growing at a rapid pace. Several companies are working on smartwatches with features that make them stand out of the crowd.  A leaked patent of an LG smartwatch reveals that the company is developing something groundbreaking.

    LG Smartwatch Patent

The patent reveals a smartwatch with a camera sensor built into its strap. The LG smartwatch has a circularly shaped dial which apparently has a touchscreen display. The side of the watch has a rotary knob which is flanked by two buttons on either side. Perhaps the side mounted controls along with the touchscreen will be used to operate the smartwatch.

The patent reveals that the LG smartwatch will also have a camera. The patent betrays three different types of camera modules that the smartwatch will have which are as follows:

    • The first diagram displays a modular camera sensor which can slide in or out into the strap of the watch.
    • The second diagram has a clip on style camera module which can be attached to the strap of the watch.
    • The third diagram reveals a camera module that is built into the strap of the watch that can be concealed with a sliding mechanism.

The rear side of the LG smartwatch also has some kind of a sensor which will most likely be some type of health tracking sensor.

The LG patent also displays some possible uses of the camera module. The user can shoot pictures of food items which with the help of other applications will promptly display the caloric value of that food. Additionally, a smartwatch with a camera can be used to read barcodes from product labels that will ease the process of ordering products online.

LG has not yet announced the unveiling date of the smartwatch but the patents are well defined which suggests that the company can surprise the world anytime. It is possible that the company showcases a smartwatch with these features at the upcoming tech events like MWC 2019.

  • Xiaomi To Launch 48 Megapixel Camera Smartphone This Month

Xiaomi To Launch 48 Megapixel Camera Smartphone This Month

Xiaomi has always been secretive about their phones but are known to tease their customers with snippets. Last month, a top executive from Xiaomi posted a photo of a teaser for a phone that showed the back of the phone and the camera partially. The text under the camera said “48 MP Camera”. The executive also said that the phone would be launched in January of 2019.

    What We Know So Far?

Recently, a new poster has surfaced with the words “Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen” . Another poster hints at the Redmi Pro 2 being launched. Connecting the dots, it seems like the Redmi Pro 2 will be launched at the event. If it is indeed the Redmi Pro 2, it will be the first phone in the world to have a camera with as high a resolution as 48 Megapixel.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 was one of the highest megapixel cameras launched with a 41 MP back camera. The phone image shared by the Xiaomi executive suggests it to have a vertical camera setup with a flash. We also suspect that the phone will have higher storage capacities, specially since higher megapixel cameras shoot images that are considerably large in size. Our guess would be at least 256 GB of storage along with complimentary Mi Cloud storage.

Speculations are rife that the phone will sport a Sony IMX586 48-megapixel sensor or Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GM1 48-megapixel sensor. What was initially thought to be the Xiaomi Mi 9 might just be the Redmi Pro 2. Given that the first Redmi Pro was launched way back in July of 2016, a new Redmi pro was long overdue! In fact the event isn’t far away at all. It has been organised for tomorrow and we are all hopeful that Xiaomi will start off the year with a bang!

  • Samsung Galaxy A50 And Galaxy Fold To Launch In India

Samsung Galaxy A50 And Galaxy Fold To Launch In India

Samsung has reshuffled their entire phone lineup and now have built different lineups for different target audiences. The latest news from a Dutch blog, suggests that Samsung now might launch the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy Fold in India. The Galaxy Fold is a foldable smartphone that Samsung wishes to launch in India as well. India is one of the biggest and most promising smartphone markets in the world and Samsung has a huge fan base here. With the launch of the two mid-range smartphones Samsung can solidify it’s hold in the Indian market even more. With competitors like Poco F1 and Xiaomi’s Mi lineup, the road hasn’t been all flowery for Samsung.

    Galaxy A50

If rumours are anything to go by, then the Galaxy A50 will sport a massive 4000 mAh battery and have a 24MP camera. It will also have an in-display fingerprint scanner. The phone is rumoured to be powered by an Exynos 9610 chipset and 4GB of RAM. It will have two variants which have 64GB and 128GB of storage. It will feature Android Pie out of the box and will most likely feature one of the company’s new Infinity displays.

    Galaxy F ( Fold )

The Galaxy Fold on the other hand will also reportedly be launched in India. Samsung has apparently registered the Galaxy Fold trademark in Turkey. Very little is known of the phone as of now but previous reports suggest that it will be priced between $1,500 and $2,000 when it launches. It will also be launched in European countries as well. If the price is indeed that high, it will definitely have top notch specifications apart from having a unique folding screen.

  • Huawei Mate 30 May Have Penta Camera Setup

Huawei Mate 30 May Have Penta Camera Setup

Huawei launched the Mate 20 series of smartphones in the second half of 2018. The Mate 20 series includes the Mate 20, Mate 20 X and the Mate 20 Pro. Out of the trio, the Mate 20 Pro is the flagship device with superior cameras. Although all three smartphones in the Mate 20 lineup have triple rear cameras, the Mate 20 Pro has higher resolution camera sensors. A leak suggests that its successor, the Mate 30 Pro will have a Penta rear camera setup.

Penta Camera Setup On The Upcoming P30 Pro

A German website, Mobielkopen spotted a Huawei patent on the Chinese NIPA’s (National Intellectual Property Administration) website. The NIPA authority is responsible for granting patents in China. Huawei was granted a patent on 1 January 2019 that reveals the case design of an upcoming smartphone. The shape and cutout from the patent are similar to that of the Mate 20 Pro except for a taller camera cutout. The case of the Mate 20 Pro with triple rear cameras has a square-shaped camera cutout. The case with taller camera cutout perhaps belongs to the Mate 30 Pro. The elongated camera cutout indicates that the Mate 30 Pro will indeed have five rear cameras.

The right side of the case has protruding ridges for the power button and the volume rockers. The bottom of the case cutouts for USB Type-C jack and a slit for the loudspeaker grille. The top of the case has holes for the 3.5 mm audio jack and the IR blaster.  Side by side case comparison of the two device advises that the Mate 30 Pro will have a similar design as its predecessor.

  • Huawei To Launch A Red Mate 20 Pro

Huawei To Launch A Red Mate 20 Pro

Huawei had announced their flagship phone – the Mate 20 Pro in October of last year. Priced at Rs 69,990, the phone was quite well received. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro features a 6.39 inches AMOLED capacitive touchscreen which has a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels and the screen ratio is 19.5:9. The screen also has extra protection as it is made of Corning Gorilla Glass. The Mate 20 Pro features a HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor and has a 3 camera setup at the back. • Microsoft Windows 10 Overtakes Windows 7

Microsoft Windows 10 Overtakes Windows 7

According to a market research study, Microsoft’s Windows 10 has overtaken the famous Windows 7 in terms of number of users. Windows 10 has now 39.22% share followed by Windows 7’s 36.90% as of December, 2018.

Brief History of Windows 7 and Windows 10

Windows 7 operating system was released in 2009 and it became one of the most successful operating systems in the world. Before that, Windows XP was a widely used platform. After a string of failure with Vista and Windows 8, Microsoft finally released the Windows 10. It was made as an OS that mixed the tablet, mobile and laptop formats in their design cue. The Windows 10 OS was well received, with additional features like Microsoft’s digital assistant – Cortana being just one click away. It mixed the App ecosystem with features that a personal computer or laptop has such as a full fledged desktop, start buttons etc. Microsoft Windows 10 had a great start. As high as 14 million devices adopted the new operating system in less than 24 hours of its release. It was a free upgrade and it changed the user experience drastically when compared to Windows 7.

    Patch Tuesday

Microsoft has also started an update cycle unofficially called Patch Tuesday. The updates occur on the second, and sometimes fourth, Tuesday of each month. Larger updates are pushed out in even-numbered months while smaller updates in odd-numbered months. Microsoft had also previously stated that Windows 10 would be the last version of the Windows platform. They had stated that the OS will be regularly changed and updated with time according to the demands of the industry. According to recent reports, Microsoft might be pushing the Windows 10 update forcefully even though Microsoft has vowed to not push updates on it’s users. The company has also very recently received flak for various issues cropping up on users’ devices after updates. It was also one of the reasons as to why one of the recent updates was pulled back as well.

It is yet to be seen how Windows tackles the constant issues with updates causing problems for users and how Windows 10 is developed and modified in the coming years, when bendable screen phones finally arrive. But for now, we will have to make do with the Windows 10 version and updates that we have.

  • Sony Has Reportedly Shipped Over 90 Million PlayStation 4 Units

Sony Has Reportedly Shipped Over 90 Million PlayStation 4 Units

PlayStation has not been known to release sales figures. But occasionally we do get to know details of PlayStation sales. This time around, the source is The Hunter, who serves as a senior gaming, tech and media editor for Walmart Canada. According to his statement in a popular micro-blogging website, PlayStation 4 crossed 90 Million units in sales.

This is no easy feat since Sony had confirmed in late October, that the company has shipped over 86 million shipments worldwide. Given the holiday season where everyone gave gifts has just passed, another 4 or 5 million in sales is not surprising. However, what is disconcerting is that Sony is said to be not participating in E3 this year. The PlayStation 5 has ben long anticipated. Specially since it has been almost 5 years since the playStation 4’s launch.

    Sony’s Statement

In a statement by Sony, they said that PlayStation fans mean the world to them and they always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, they have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. They have also said that they are exploring new and familiar ways to engage their community in 2019 and can’t wait to share their plans with the gamers. This has led to speculations suggesting that Sony might be planning their own event where they release a new PlayStation console. This kind of a stunt has previously been seen with big players like Microsoft and EA.

Another reason for Sony’s no-show is also believed to be the lack of game titles that are to be released in 2019 for the PS4 console. The very few games that are yet to be released include The Last of Us: Part 2, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima. It will be exciting if Sony does release a new console in 2019 itself and not 2020. However, some speculations now suggest a 2020 release, but we will just have to wait and see what happens.

  • Apple Misses AirPower Release Window

    Apple Misses AirPower Release Window

Apple is known for their timely product releases and the exceptional quality of the products. But it seems like Apple has been having some issues with the AirPower – A wireless charger that will reportedly charge multiple devices. In all the Apple events in 2017, the company had said that consumers can expect the AirPower to be released for purchase by 2018 itself.

AirPower is a wireless charging mat-like device that can charge more than one device. Most wireless chargers available in the market now are capable of charging one device at a time. The Apple wireless charger was shown to charge an Apple Watch, an iPhone and their proprietary wireless earbuds.

    What Happened?

The AirPower device was also supposed to coordinate with all the Apple devices being charged and show percentages of charge in each device on the iPhone. The company had expressed interest to work with Qi Standards team. Th aim is to incorporate these benefits into the future of the standards. But no news about any cooperation has come up yet either.

Apple has also not set a price down for the AirPower charger and have not given out a statement regarding the same. It is believed that some internal development difficulties has caused this delay. It is very unlike of Apple to miss deadlines as they hold to higher standards and have set timelines for every device they make. However, it is unclear if the AirPower project has altogether been scrapped. Apple might also be making further improvements to the product itself but our guess is as good as yours.

    When Will We Know?

Apple usually has three or four events in a year. One in March which revolves around education and creativity themes and are often known to include iPads. There is also a big event in June known as WWDC which sees mostly softwares and sometimes, although rarely, high-end hardware.

The other two events are in September which is the most anticipated event in all year. The reason behind it is because this event usually features new iPhones and Apple Watches and one in October. The October event usually releases iPads and sometimes consumer focused Macs. We will hopefully come to know the status of the AirPower in the next Apple event in 2019, if not before.

  • Sony Bumps Up 3D Camera Sensor Production

Sony Bumps Up 3D Camera Sensor Production

Sony’s smartphone and consumer electronics division might be facing tough times but the company is undoubtedly the world’s biggest smartphone camera chip manufacturer. More than 50 percent of the smartphones in the market use camera sensors that are manufactured by Sony which includes Apple, Samsung and Google. A Bloomberg report suggests that Sony is now gearing up to ramp up the production of 3D camera sensors.

What Is A 3D Camera Sensor?

A 3D camera is an imaging device that allows to replicate three dimesional  objects with the help of depth sensing technologies. Digital cameras with 3D sensors have been available in the market for quite some time. These cameras are bulky and hard to carry but Sony seems to be developing miniscule 3D sensors that can be embedded in to smartphones. 3D sensors on a smartphone can open a whole new world of possiblities.

Few uses of smartphones with 3D sensors are as follows:

    • Smartphones with 3D sensors can be used to create a virtual 3D model of a user that has the potential to change the future of shopping. The users can easily scan their body parts like the face and head to virtually try on accessories like hats and spectacles.
    • 3D camera sensor featuring smartphones can also help in pushing the boundaries of mobile gaming further. Mobile game corporations can use these sensors to make a virtual 3D model of the player which can be loaded in to the game. This would help the companies to create an even immersive expereience to the users.

However, Sony claims their technology is more accurate than the offerings of their competitors. Sony uses a method called ‘time of flight’ of TOF that sends out out invisible laser pulses and measures how long they take to bounce back. This technology is used to take precise 3D pictures of objects. According to Sony officials, the company’s sensors can even capture pictures at a distance of five meters.

Sony seems to be optimistic about the future of this technology and predicts this feature can boost the sinking smartphone sales. In the interview with Bloomberg, the company reported that the upcoming Huawei phone will employ 3D sensors made by Sony. Additionally, Sony revealed that the company is getting interest from Apple perhaps future iPhones will makes use of this type of sensors. To meet the high prediction of demands, Sony will kick off mass production in late summer of 2019.
