  • Google To Revive Nexus Brand For Mid-Range Pixel

Google To Revive Nexus Brand For Mid-Range Pixel

Google as a smartphone manufacturer, became popular for its Nexus devices which were known for being alpha devices approved by Google for their Stock Android OS. This was, until the Mountain View-based company launched the Google Pixel in 2016, to much dismay of Nexus fans. Nexus smartphones and tablets were designed by OEMs like Samsung, HTC, Huawei and LG while they ran stock Android in their respective years, post-Android 2.1 (Eclair). In 2016, however, Google decided to remove any third party OEM branding with the Google Pixel lineup. Google heavily refined the software experience for the Pixel phones while these devices were still supposedly manufactured by OEMs.

According to a recent news report, Google is apparently working towards launching a mid-range Pixel smartphone in India. According to sources close to iGyaan, these devices may carry the Nexus branding, resurrecting the once loved smartphone brand. The unique proposition for Nexus smartphones was their premium specs, look and feel at an affordable price, a flagship killer so to speak, much like many flagship killers of today from brands like OnePlus, Honor and Xiaomi. This means that a new Nexus smartphone will carry a certain perception that previous Nexus devices built during their existence.

A Nexus Take on the iPhone SE 2

Google is expected to launch the new smartphone in June 2018 along with the new Pixelbook. This will pretty much be Google’s answer to the iPhone SE, and the possible iPhone SE 2 which is expected to launch in India during the same time. If we look at the numbers, Google sold 3.9 million Pixel smartphones globally in 2017 while Apple sold 214.9 million devices. The existence of offline stores and affordable iPhone models like the iPhone SE has, in fact, helped Apple to achieve these sale figures in countries like China and India which are highly price sensitive.

    2018 Apple iPhone

As is with every smartphone launch in India, the pricing will play a huge role here. Google will have to keep the price of the new device as low as possible without defeating their own Pixel brand. The likes of OnePlus, Honor and Xiaomi already dominate the affordable flagship category. In the budget segment, Xiaomi, Nokia and Motorola have solid offerings. However, the mid-range segment of Rs 20,000-25,000 has a gaping hole.

Another important aspect is the accessibility. A majority of users in markets like India still prefer offline shopping for smartphones. A report claims that Google will address this by focussing on the offline market through brick and mortar stores. How this strategy will impact the sales of the upcoming Nexus device/s, will be a prediction as good as any other. But if the company manages a solid offering with a great value, much like the original Nexus devices, it may give companies like OnePlus a run for their money.

  • Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo Will Have A Dual Camera Setup

Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo Will Have A Dual Camera Setup

A leaked manual of the Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo confirms that the smartphone will be the first J series device to have a dual primary camera setup. Up until now, Samsung has used dual camera setup on three smartphones including, the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy A8+ (front-facing) and Galaxy S9+. However, the company did launch the Galaxy C7  with a dual camera setup in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. This also means we will see more Samsung mid-tier smartphones in the future with dual camera setup.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo also has a replaceable back panel with a user accessible battery. Additionally, this is also the first mid-range smartphone from the company to support Bixby. However, unlike flagship smartphones, there is no dedicated Bixy button. The Galaxy J7 series is one of the popular Samsung lineups in India, which hints that the smartphone might launch in India. The smartphone is likely to retail at a price of Rs 15,000+ mark.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo has a 5.5 inch 1920 x 1080 px IPS LCD display. Under the hood, the device is powered by the Exynos 7885 Octa-core chipset with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. As with the most of the Samsung phones, the storage will be expandable up to 256GB via micro SD.

The smartphone has a dual camera setup. It has a 13MP RGB sensor with an f/1.9 aperture and a 5MP Depth sensor with an f/1.9 aperture. These cameras produce the depth of field or bokeh effect, which keeps the subject in focus and blurs the background. The device runs on Android 8 Oreo with custom Samsung Experience UI on top.

  • Avengers Themed OnePlus 6 To Launch In April

Avengers Themed OnePlus 6 To Launch In April

The CEO of OnePlus Pete Lau has already confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will have a display with a notch and will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. Last year, OnePlus partnered with Lucasfilm to launch a limited edition OnePlus 5T Star Wars edition smartphone. This year, the company might launch the limited edition OnePlus 6 with Avengers: Infinity War Theme.

On the 3rd of April, OnePlus India’s official Facebook page shared a YouTube video, which OnePlus and Avengers Logo. Just like the Star Wars edition, the company might launch the Avengers: Infinity War edition OnePlus 6 on the day of the premiere. The OnePlus 6 Avengers Edition will cost a bit more than the standard edition, which might also include Avengers themed accessories. A recent leak also confirmed that the entry-level OnePlus 6 will launch in India at a price of Rs 34,000. Similarly, the high-end variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage can cost up to Rs 40,000.

    OnePlus 6
    OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition

The smartphone will have a 6.28 inch OLED display with FHD+ 2280 x 1080 px resolution. The phone will have 19:9 aspect ratio with the iPhone X style notch on the top. However, unlike the iPhone X, there is no 3D Facial Recognition. Instead, the Face Unlock will be achieved by a front-facing camera. The OnePlus 6 will have a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Under the hood, the device will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa-core chipset with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Going by the previous leak, there might be a model with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage as well. Additionally, the smartphone will not support memory expansion.

    OnePlus 6

The device will have a dual camera setup with a 16MP sensor and a 20MP sensor with an f/1.7 aperture. The device will have a 20MP front-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

The OnePlus 6 will run on Android 8.1 Oreo with custom OxygenOS on top. The device might also support gesture-based navigation similar to the iPhone X. Finally, the smartphone will have a 3450 mAh Li-ion battery with Dash Charging and possibly, wireless charging capabilities as well.

  • OnePlus Confirms 256GB Variant Of The OnePlus 6

OnePlus Confirms 256GB Variant Of The OnePlus 6

Out of the blue, the OnePlus 6 launch seems to be closer than ever. Up until a week ago, it looked like the new flagship smartphone will launch in June. However, that has changed, and now, the smartphone will launch in mid or late-April. The Chinese smartphone maker has also started teasing the launch on social media. Now, it has confirmed an important detail about the OnePlus 6.

A few days ago, a sketchy-looking image of the possible pricing details of the OnePlus 6 served up an interesting detail. It revealed that the device will launch in a 256GB storage variant and OnePlus has now confirmed the existence of it. For the first time in its brief history, OnePlus will unveil its smartphone in a 256GB onboard storage. The OnePlus 6 will obviously not have expandable storage but, it does give OnePlus 6 suitors a new option to choose from.

    OnePlus 6

As far as RAM is concerned, the smartphone will only have two variants with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. We are still a couple of years way from 10GB RAM in smartphones becoming the new normal. Another interesting ramification of the new storage variant will be the increase in price. If history is anything to go by, OnePlus users do not respond well to hiked price tags. According to a recent report, the 64GB storage variant will be priced at around Rs 34000 in India.

  • Apple Has Released The Biggest iOS Update Since iOS 11

Apple Has Released The Biggest iOS Update Since iOS 11

Soon after the launch of the iPhone X, Apple started rolling out the new iOS 11 update to all compatible iOS devices. Keeping up with its reputation for extensive software support for its older devices, the iPhone 5s received the iOS 11 update. For context, the iPhone 5s was launched in September 2013. However, everything wasn’t rosy for iOS 11 as it was marred with many bugs. Initially, it had the slowest adoption rate when compared to previous iOS versions.

After multiple software updates, the iOS 11 experience has become much better but, still leaves a lot to be desired in some aspects. But, the new iOS 11 update is much more significant than the previous ones so far. As promised by Tim Cook, the new iOS 11 update has brought about a major change.

    Battery Health And CPU Throttling

In late-December 2017, it was unearthed that Apple was deliberately slowing down older iPhones. The company came out and laid down the reasons for which it took those measures. Apple admitted that it capped the peak demands of the processors of older iPhones to battle battery degradation. This lead to a huge uproar and Apple faced multiple class action lawsuits as well.

Tim Cook then conceded that an iOS 11 update would let users choose between battery health and unadulterated performance. With iOS 11.3, users can head to the battery settings to check the battery health of their iPhone and whether it has been slowed down via software or not.

This was a necessary step for Apple and now gives a lot of control to the user. Some users would choose battery health in order to avoid replacing the old battery. However, there is a majority of people who’d rather use their iPhone to its full potential. The new feature, right now, is in its Beta mode. Once you click on Battery Health (Beta), the window displays the iPhone battery’s maximum capacity. This is a measure of the battery capacity relative to when it was new.

The lower section of the screen is labelled “Peak Performance Capacity,” and has two types of sub-headings. If your phone has never experienced an unexpected shutdown, it will say, “Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance.” However, in the opposite case, the message will read:

Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity.

How to check battery health: Settings>Battery>Battery Health (Beta)

    New Animojis

It is hard to fathom that the most famous feature of a brilliant smartphone like the iPhone X is dancing animated characters. Apple showed off Animojis on stage during the launch of the iPhone X and the craze has fizzled away since. Companies like Samsung and Huawei have come up with their own rendition of Animojis but failed to impress.

With iOS 11.3, Apple has added more characters to Animojis. The update adds a skeleton, a lion, a dragon, and a bear, not to be confused with the existing panda bear Animoji. It is worth noting that these new Animojis don’t add any functionality to the existing system, they’re just new skins to play around with.

    ARKit 1.5

At the World Wide Developer Conference 2017, Apple introduced ARKit. This is Apple’s AR application programming interface. Its main function is to handle the lower-level processing so that developers can focus on the experience of the app. Up until the new update, ARKit could only place objects on flat surfaces or horizontal planes. But, with ARKit 1.5, developers can place objects on surfaces like a wall or any other vertical plane. Also, accuracy is now increased while mapping objects on a vertical plane.

Another interesting feature is image-recognition. For example, the ARKit can project a full-size robot if a poster for an associated robot movie is seen by the phone’s camera. These developments prove that Apple has a lot of focus on AR and will come out with even more functions in the future updates.

This also means that we could see great developments in AR at the upcoming WWDC 2018.

  • Sony Xperia XZ2 To Launch In India On April 16th

Sony Xperia XZ2 To Launch In India On April 16th

UPDATE: The event is for an audio product not the launch of an Xperia smartphone.

Sony could launch its new flagship smartphone, Xperia XZ2 in India. The company has sent out press invites for an event on the 16th of April. The Xperia XZ2 has also been listed on Sony India’s official website which means that the company could indeed launch the device in India.

This is a great move by Sony which launched its previous flagship, the Xperia XZ1 back in September 2017 in India. The new Sony Xperia XZ2 has top of the line specifications and a much-needed design shift to a modern 18:9 aspect ratio. The price of the smartphones will be of utmost importance in a price-sensitive market like in India. Globally, the Xperia XZ2 retails for US$ 799 (Rs 51000 approx.). Now, the Xperia XZ1 was launched in India at price of Rs 44990, and a similar price will be expected for the new flagship smartphone.

Apart from an 18:9 aspect ratio, Sony has made a few significant design changes with the Xperia XZ2. The Xperia XZ2 has a curvier back as opposed to the block design found on the previous Sony flagship phones. The fingerprint sensor also has a new placement this time around. Instead of housing the sensor inside the lock button, the company has moved it to the back of the smartphone. Sony has retained a single camera setup on the back like Google did with the Pixel 2 devices.

    Sony Xperia XZ2 Specs

    The Sony Xperia XZ2 has a 5.7 inch IPS LCD display with a 2160 x 1080px resolution.

The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The storage is expandable up to 400GB via a microSD card. Sony has used 3D Gorilla Glass shielding for the back panel. This also means that the Xperia XZ2 comes with support for wireless charging. The smartphone is also IP68 rated for water and dust resistance.

The Xperia XZ2 has a 19MP primary camera with an f/2.0 aperture. In the world of Huawei P20 Pro and its triple camera setup, the Xz2 might seem a bit archaic. But, it could perform well like the Google Pixel 2 smartphones so, we will leave it to that until we test out the device. Interestingly, it has a feature that even the mighty Samsung Galaxy S9 doesn’t have. The XZ2 is capable of recording 1080P video at a whopping 960fps, while the Galaxy S9 only records 720P videos at 960fps. On the front of the smartphone is a 5MP shooter with an f/2.2 aperture.

The phone has a slightly bigger 3180 mAh battery with fast charging capability.

  • HTC U12 Design Leaked In New Renders

HTC U12 Design Leaked In New Renders

The HTC U12 is the upcoming flagship which is expected to launch in July 2018. A new leak from a case render has confirmed the design and aesthetics of the HTC U12. However, the leak is a bit contradictory to the previous leaks, as the company was about to skip the U12 by directly launching the HTC U12+.

The leak confirms that the smartphone has a Quad-camera solution. Two cameras on the front and two on back. However, whether it’ll have a telephoto lens or some other implementation is yet to be known. Additionally, the HTC U12 will have an 18:9 aspect ratio display without a notch. Similar to the HTC U11+, the smartphone does not have a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Keeping in line with its similarities to the U11+, the fingerprint sensor is placed on the back.

    HTC U12

    HTC U12 Specs

The HTC U12 will have a 6 inch display with a 2880 x 1440 px resolution. Under the hood, it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. Coupled with this chipset will be up to 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. However, details about other variants have not been revealed. It will be IP68 rated for water and dust resistance, a staple for modern-day flagship phones.

    HTC U12

Now, it is a known fact that Face Unlock is the new trend of the industry. However, it will be interesting to see how HTC implements this feature and how secure it’ll be. On the back of the smartphone will be a dual camera setup of a 12MP sensor coupled with a 16MP Sony IMX3xx sensor. No details about the nature of these sensors have been revealed so far.

  • Apple Will Make It Own Chipsets To Power Mac Devices By 2020

Apple Will Make It Own Chipsets To Power Mac Devices By 2020

Most of the Notebook manufacturers use either Intel or AMD chipset. However, recently, companies like HP and Asus has started to launch notebook based on the Qualcomm chipsets. According to a report, Apple might replace the Intel processors on Macs to use its custom ARM chipsets. When Apple started making MacBooks and iMacs, the company initially used Motorola and IBM’s PowerPC chipsets. However, in 2005 Apple switched to Intel processor-based Macs.

The report suggests that the company is working on a new project named ‘Kalamata.’ The project is still in a nascent stage and this will help Apple to achieve seamless integration across its lineup including iPhone, iPad, iMac, and MacBook. This would also affect Intel, as 5% of its overall revenue generated comes from Apple. As soon as this news was out, Intel’s shares were down by 9.2%, which is the biggest intraday drop in the last two years.

However, Intel has not spoken a word about this development, and played safe:

We don’t comment on speculation about our customers

    Apple Custom Chipset Specs

The processors will be manufactured by TSMC, which is the manufacturer of Apple A series chipsets for iPhones and iPads. These chipsets will use Arm’s technology. These processors are expected to offer better battery life and it will ease out the transition of unifying the iOS and macOS. The unification will be achieved using a new platform called ‘Marzipan’, which will be expected to go live in WWDC 2018 for developers.

Most of the notebook manufacturers like HP, Dell, and Asus wait for Intel or AMD to launch its latest chipset. If Apple develops its own chipset, then the company can be ahead of the competition. This will have a positive impact on Apple, as the company will have an all-around control over the components required for designing a device. This also means that the company will be able to launch newer Mac models with its own time frame. Additionally, this will help the company to integrate iOS and macOS on chipset level.

  • Xiao Ai Is Xiaomi’s Virtual Assistant And It Is Very Similar To The Google Assistant

Xiao Ai Is Xiaomi’s Virtual Assistant And It Is Very Similar To The Google Assistant

When Google launched the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, it talked a lot about the tight integration of Google Assistant within the OS. Many believed that AI and machine learning would be the next big trend in the smartphone industry. However, that doesn’t seem to hold up so far in 2018. The iPhone X notch has taken over the smartphone industry in the first few months of 2018. However, Xiaomi has strayed away from the herd so far. It launched the Mi MIX 2s without a notch and has now introduced its own virtual assistant, Xiao Ai.

    Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s

Now, there is a huge chance that Xiao AI will never make its way to India. But, recent launch activity by Xiaomi India suggests the company has identified the great potential Indian market possesses. So, it is not completely ludicrous to expect an India-friendly version of Xiao Ai making its debut with the Mi MIX 2s. Then again, don’t hold your breath for the launch of the Mi MIX 2s in India.

Xiaomi has released a video showcasing the skills of its new AI assistant, Xiao Ai. The video is mostly in Chinese but, there are English subtitles and we couldn’t help but notice similarities with Google Assistant. In the video, colourful bars pop up when the assistant is listening, similar to the Google Assistant. Also, it shows that Xiao Ai can set reminders, control smart lights, tell the weather and other tasks that Google Assistant and the likes of Alexa, Siri can do as well.

However, it is worth noting that Xiao Ai is programmed based on the Chinese language. This means that, in China, at least, this will be the most productive virtual assistant. This bodes well for the company’s other smart home offerings as well.

  • Xiaomi’s Gaming Smartphone Black Shark To Launch On April 13th

Xiaomi’s Gaming Smartphone Black Shark To Launch On April 13th

According to a latest Weibo post, Black Shark, the subsidiary smartphone brand of Xiaomi is all set to launch its first gaming smartphone on April 13th. In February and March of 2018, there were many leaks and rumours about the Xiaomi Black Shark. The latest teaser image officially confirms the launch date of the new device. However, the company has not used the word Xiaomi anywhere on its teaser image.

Xiaomi BlackShark is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, which also powers the recently launched the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s. However, unlike the Mi MIX 2s, the Black Shark is expected to have a sturdier design with a metal unibody design, which will help the smartphone to dissipate the heat. The smartphone is most likely to be a China exclusive model, which is expected to retail at ~US$ 500.

    Xiaomi Black Shark

    Xiaomi Black Shark Specs

The Xiaomi BlackShark is expected to have a 6 inch display with 2160 x 1080p resolution. Under the hood, the smartphone will be powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset with 8 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. However, the company is expected to Xiaomi BlackShark with either 64GB or 128GB storage.

    Mi MIX 2s

The BlackShark might offer a full metal unibody design with dual stereo speakers at the bottom. Out of the box, the smartphone will run on Android 8.0 Oreo. However, it might feature either MIUI or stock Android. As this is a gaming smartphone, it comes with one of a kind aviation class cooling system with additional tweaks. The smartphone scores an impressive 270680 points on Antutu, in fact, it is more than that of the Galaxy S9’s 265267 points.

  • OnePlus 5T Goes Out Of Stock As The OnePlus 6 Launch Looms Large

OnePlus 5T Goes Out Of Stock As The OnePlus 6 Launch Looms Large

On the 16th of November, OnePlus launched its second flagship of 2017, the OnePlus 5T. Its surprisingly same pricing as the OnePlus 5 was met with a collective disapproval by OnePlus 5 owners, a smartphone that was launched in June 2017. The launch of the OnePlus 5T meant the OnePlus 5 became an old phone within six months of its launch. Now, the launch of the OnePlus 6 looms large as the OnePlus 5T goes out of stock in India.

One can no longer buy the OnePlus 5T from the official OnePlus India website. Amazon, the official OnePlus 5T seller has also removed the 128GB variant of the device. Only the 64GB storage variant is available to buy and that too, not for too long. This usually happens before a OnePlus launch event. Last year, the OnePlus 5 went out of stock in North America before the OnePlus 5T launch. This week, the OnePlus 5T went out of stock in North America.

    OnePlus 6

Along with that, OnePlus has also started teasing the smartphone on social media. The company posted a small teaser video with the caption “6et Ready” suggesting the OnePlus 6 launch is imminent. We already know that the OnePlus 6 will sport an iPhone X-like notch but, the size of the notch will be much smaller. According to the image released by The Verge, it has the same size as the one found on the Huawei P20 Pro.

However, unlike the P20 Pro, the OnePlus 6 will have a non-functioning chin. Carl Pei recently clarified why all Android smartphones with a notch also have a chin, unlike the iPhone X. At the bottom of each display is a ribbon for connecting it to the device’s logic board, which means a thin chin becomes necessary. Apple decided to curb that with a flexible OLED, which, even though is a great solution, it is also an expensive one. At least, with the Huawei P20 Pro, you get a very good front-facing fingerprint sensor.

    OnePlus 6

The OnePlus 6 will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset. This time around, the OnePlus 6 will launch in a 256GB storage variant as well.
