  • Apple Hints At September Launch of The iPhone 8 with US$ 50 Billion in Q4 Earnings

Apple Hints At September Launch of The iPhone 8 with US$ 50 Billion in Q4 Earnings

The rumours of delay in launch of the Apple iPhone 8 have been innumerous, but Apple’s Q3 earnings announcement suggested quite the opposite. Tim Cook said that Apple is expected to earn revenue anywhere from US $49 billion to US $52 billion in the next quarter, which ends in September.

The earnings represented by Apple are high enough to hint that the iPhone 8 may go on sale in September itself, during the fourth financial quarter.

Further to support the claims of an early iPhone 8 launch is the statement made by Tim Cook, saying that Apple would have “very exciting Fall.” He also said :

We’ve put everything we know into coming up with the guidance…we really like what we see for the beginning of the back-to-school season.”

Though nothing can be confirmed, but we certainly hope that the iPhone 8 is one of the reasons for quoting such optimistic earnings prediction. A September release would impact Apple’s Fourth Quarter revenue immensely.

That said, the earlier reports of manufacturers backing out from contracts with Apple, problems with installing few features like the Touch ID, etc have led the analysts to make a common prediction. They expect that the delays and shortage of supplies may mean that iPhone 8 will see a very limited release in September.

We have also been receiving constant updates about the next iPhone’s design, features etc. – courtesy the leaked HomePod firmware. But that doesn’t mean the redesigned iPhone is what Apple plans to release this September. There has been some speculations about Apple splitting the iPhone line by releasing theiPhone 7S in September, and the redesigned model – iPhone 8, a few months later.

These speculations could also mean that the significant earnings predicted by Apple could be from expectations of people upgrading to the rumoured iPhone lineup – iPhone 7s and 7s Plus. Or maybe Apple is banking on massive HomePod sales, either way Apple is definitely prepared for  something “very exciting” this fall.

  • OnePlus 5 May Soon Be Launched In A Swanky Red Variant

OnePlus 5 May Soon Be Launched In A Swanky Red Variant

Oneplus has just posted a new image on their social media suggest a brand new colour for their 2017 flagship the Oneplus 5. The OnePlus 5 was launched in June and was embroiled in controversy because of botched benchmark scores and a higher price than expected from OnePlus devices, which left a lot of people questioning OnePlus’ decisions.

The OnePlus 5 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Chipset it has 6GB or 8GB of RAM along with 64GB or 128GB  onboard storage. The highlight of the OnePlus 5 was the dual 16MP+20MP camera setup which has features like portrait mode, and background defocus, the design and features of the camera were also said to be copied from the Apple iPhone 7 Plus.

OnePlus didn’t make any changes on the display on the OnePlus 5 keeping the same 5.5-inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 px resolution. OnePlus has also kept the Optic AMOLED display seen on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3t along with the fingerprint sensor sitting below the screen.

The OnePlus 5, is presently, available in two colour variants; the Slate Gray and Midnight Black. The Midnight Black colour variant is only available in the 8GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage variant, and is priced at Rs 37,999. OnePlus has experimented with colors in the past, way back with the OnePlus One the company launched replacement panels, which would change the back of the OnePlus One to a bamboo finish. Last year, with the OnePlus 3T the company launched a Limited Colette edition black phone which was lated sold globally as the limited edition Midnight Black. The Midnight Black colour is the same as the one on the OnePlus 5 top variant.

Prior to launch the leaks had suggested that OnePlus will launch the OnePlus 5 in a RED, much like the iPhone 7 RED colour, and later images for a blue OnePlus 5 surfaced. These may finally be revealed, or one of them at least. As the posted image shows a black canvas on the OnePlus 5 and the text “5ometing New. Coming Soon” is written in bright Red indicating a red colour variant. We honestly, wouldn’t mind a blue colour version either.

Despite the controversies, the OnePlus 5 has received good reviews for its snappy performance and is one of the popular flagships of 2017. A new colour variant, possibly blue or red should re-ignite the dwindling conversation for the Oneplus 5. Stay tuned for updates, and an iGyaan Hands-On, when and if a RED colour launches.

  • Everything We Know About The Apple iPhone 8

Everything We Know About The Apple iPhone 8

Ever since the original iPhone was launched in 2007, each next-gen Apple iPhone has been highly anticipated. Every year, new leaks and reports emerge to tell us something new about the next iPhone, and with the September launch now less than two months away, here is everything on the upcoming iPhone8/X/Pro –

    Launch Date

The iPhone 8 is expected to be launched on September 12. Apple has been hosting its iPhone launch events in September since 2012. September 12 also falls on a Tuesday, which is in line with the ongoing tradition.

    Price

The iPhone has always been placed as a premium smartphone. The iPhone 8 will take that premium to a notch higher, with a report at Forbes claiming that pricing could start at a whopping US $ 1,100 to US $ 1,200, with Apple only offering the iPhone in 128GB and 256GB configurations. Studying the price of each new iPhone also suggests that the new iPhone 8 could easily cross the $1,000 mark and become the most expensive iPhone yet. A new report by Mac4Ever suggests that the iPhone 8 will retail at a starting price of US $999 for the 64GB variant, US $1099 for the 256GB variant and US $1199 for the 512GB variant.

    Display

The most talked-about feature of the upcoming iPhone 8 is its bezel less display. Ever since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ with the infinity display, rumors have suggested a bezel-less display on the next iPhone. Apple is also said to finally be using OLED panels, and rumors suggest that the iPhone 8 will feature a curved OLED display which will pit it against the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+’s display.

    FaceID/TouchID – No Home Button?

An edge-to-edge to display means that just like Samsung, Apple will have to figure out the placement of the beloved TouchID home button. Apple appears to have grown weary of any buttons and instead FaceID is said to be used for the next iPhone 8. Recently, Apple has released the first build of the upcoming HomePod’s firmware which contains code for FaceID, codenamed PearlID due to the presence of infra-red face unlock in the biometric kit. What route Apple takes is yet to be seen but the latest leak all but confirms that FaceID will make its way into the iPhone 8. The leaked firmware of Apple’s HomePod has also revealed that the physical home button will be replaced with a virtual button.

    Camera

The Apple iPhone 7 Plus was Apple’s foray into dual-camera setups. The horizontally placed dual-camera setup was well-received after a few initial updates fixed the ‘portrait mode.’ Numerous leaks and renders of the iPhone 8 have pointed towards vertically placed dual-cameras. According to Korea Economic Daily, Apple is working on facial recognition technology leveraging the cameras for “biometric” identification. Like Touch ID — but with your face instead of your thumbprint. In addition to that, a leaked patent application spills out the details of a sensor that will tell you if you’re human or not. This is Apple’s effort towards developing a rear-facing 3D laser system that would improve AR depth detection as well autofocus for photography.

The iPhone 8 will record 3840 x 2160 px 4K videos at 60 FPS with both the rear and front camera, according to the HomePod firmware leaks. The Apple HomePod firmware also suggests that the 4K video from the front and rear cameras will support Apple’s new HVEC file type, which reduces the file size by a significant amount. This makes sense because 4K videos generally have large file sizes and HVEC can reduce the size by almost 50 per cent resulting in better storage management.

    New Colours

There were reports that Apple will be ditching the ‘Rose Gold’ colour variant for the iPhone 8. An image of three colour variants, Copper Gold, Silver and Black for the iPhone 8 was leaked on Weibo. The Copper Gold clour has never been used by Apple for its iPhone lineup and will be an interesting addition for the consumers. The silver colour indicates that the phone’s minimal bezels will be white in colour. The iPhone 8 is also expected to make an appearance in the colour RED as a limited edition variant.

    Wireless Charging

The images of the components of the new iPhones first appeared on Weibo. The images show the purported component that will enable wireless charging on all of Apple’s next-generation iPhones. The part will be placed on the back of the iPhone 8, right under the rear glass shell. It has been already reported that the iPhone lineup will have a “glass sandwich” design, which means glass front and back. This news further legitimises the HomePod firmware leak which suggested that wireless charging support will be built into iOS. Having an all glass design allows manufacturers to add wireless charging capabilities even though it’s not as durable as having an all metal design.

    Under The Hood

The Apple iPhone 8 is expected to run on the Apple A11 Chipset and have 4GB RAM. The iPhone 8 will be shipped in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB onboard storage variants.

    iOS

Apple at WWDC 2017 announced iOS 11 and the developer preview has already been seeded.  iOS 11 has a newly redesigned control center, improved Siri functionalities and a screen record function among other things like a new file system, camera, and network functionality. Apple also unveiled an array of AR applications which will be compatible with the iPhone 7 Plus and the next iPhone due to the requirement of a dual-camera setup. The leaked firmware has also unearthed a new ‘tap to wake’ feature on the iPhone which will be a welcome addition.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Midnight Black Colour Image Leaked

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Midnight Black Colour Image Leaked

Samsung’s flagship device of the year, the Galaxy Note 8 is all set for launch on August 23. Earlier this month, Samsung sent out press invites for the official unveiling of the Galaxy Note 8. The invite carried an image featuring an outline of a device with an Infinity Display, thin bezels on the top and bottom and a stylus.

The invite just offered a glimpse of the Galaxy Note 8 silhouette, but a recent tweet has revealed the smartphone in its “Midnight Black”color variant.

The Galaxy Note 8 is expected to feature a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED curved infinity display with a 4k resolution, the smartphone is expected to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset.  The Galaxy Note 8 will run Android 7.1 with a massive 6GB RAM and 64GB on board storage.

The smartphone is said to feature a horizontally placed dual rear camera set up. Each sensor is expected to be a 12MP, while one will provide 3X optical zoom for a close-up shot. The dual cameras will enable brighter low-light shots when used in tandem, along with the other features like background effect (to blur the all but the subject of a shot), perspective view (which tilts the image based on how you rotate your phone) and a depth-of-field effect.

Samsung seems to be opting for a 3,300mAh battery pack for the Galaxy Note 8 which is slightly smaller in comparison to last year’s Galaxy Note 7 which had a 3500mAh battery. The decision of installing a smaller battery might be a smart one, considering the last years battery failures.

Given last year’s Note 7 recall, and the damage it did to the brand, Samsung is under pressure to deliver a smartphone that could win back the customer’s trust and re-establish the Galaxy Note name in the Smartphone market.

  • Samsung SM-G9298 High-End Flip Smartphone Leaks

Samsung seems to have a thing for flip phones, the company is reportedly following up last year’s SM-W2017 with another top-end flip phone in 2017. While everyone seems to be focused on the Galaxy Note 8 new press renders leaked suggest that the, Chinese market-only, flagship flip phone, called SM-G9298 will sport all the high-end specifications you expect from a flagship.

The phone is expected to sport a 4.2-inch full HD display and a relatively small 2,300 mAh battery. It will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and 6GB of RAM. It will ship with 64GB of onboard storage and a 12-megapixel rear camera with OIS. The images leaked show an old-school clamshell design. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back of the device along with the camera. The images do not show the secondary display which will be accessible once you flip open the phone. All-round specifications are not yet available for the phone but from whatever we’ve seen so far, it will be a premium smartphone for people who are still in love with flip phones.

Key specifications of the Samsung SM-G9298 are:

    • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835
    • RAM: 6GB
    • Storage: 64GB
    • Camera: 12-megapixel

According to The Korea Herald, the LG V30 will be the first smartphone by LG to sport an OLED display and next year’s LG G7 will follow suit. The LG V30 will launch with all the flagship specifications like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and 4GB or 6GB of RAM and wireless charging, which may not be available in all markets, much like the LG G6.

Rumoured key specifications of the LG V30 :

    • Launch: August 31

    • ESS Quad DAC

A new leak recently shares an extract of the LG V30 from its user manual which seems to solidify most of the rumours about the LG V30’s design.

LG is known to experiment with smartphone designs like the modularity of the LG G5 or the secondary screen on the original LG V10. However, the LG V30 is expected to launch with a design more in-line with smartphone designs currently in the market.

It is unclear as to when will the LG V30 go on sale, but previous LG smartphone trends suggest that it will go on sale in South Korea first and then make its way into other markets. The LG V30 will compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the Apple iPhone 8 and the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, all expected to launch in the second half of 2017.

  • The US Navy Used 3D Printing To Develop A Concept Submersible In Under 4 Weeks

The US Navy Used 3D Printing To Develop A Concept Submersible In Under 4 Weeks

3D printing has a come long way since its inception. From developing straightforward and simple products to now printing intricate and massive structures, there has been quite a growth in the field of 3D printing.

Militaries from all over the world have recognised the utility of 3D printing as a cost effective resource for the future. They’ve eyed 3D printing for printing up replacement parts for warplanes, grenade launchers, and even meals for soldiers. The US Navy recently, teamed up with Oak Ridge National to develop a concept submersible which was printed under 4 weeks.

Using 3D printing to develop weapons sounds futuristic, but, it will be a viable option in a couple of years if everything goes as planned. The 3D printed concept submersible was developed by a team from the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and Carderock Division’s Disruptive Technology Laboratory (DTL) and has a name too, Optionally Manned Technology Demonstrator.

The team began work in August of 2016 and used an industrial 3D printer called Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) to develop six carbon fibre sections, which were then assembled to form the 30-foot vehicle. The US Navy’s largest 3D printed asset was developed in 4 weeks, out of which a week was consumed to design the structure and the rest, for printing and assembly.

According to the Department of Energy, a typical hull takes anywhere between 5 to 8 months to manufacture and costs around $600,000 to $800,000. This 3D printed vehicle cost 90 per cent of that amount and was manufactured in under 4 weeks. The time taken to manufacture this vehicle means that replacement parts or specially designed equipment can be deployed at a rapid pace.

It is important to note that this is not a functioning machine by any means and just a concept as of now. The concept, however, is a proof that replacement parts and such heavy equipment can be manufactured using 3D printing. This is definitely a step in the right direction for rapid and cheap manufacture of defence equipment. It’s expected that fleet-capable prototypes of the 3D printed vessels could be deployed by as early as 2019.

  • All May Not Be Well At Andy Rubin’s Essential Smartphone Project

All May Not Be Well At Andy Rubin’s Essential Smartphone Project

In the tech industry, running a startup is no easy job. Considering the pace at which the balance shifts and the industry moves forward, it becomes a hellish job at times to keep it all together and work for the common goal of the startup.

When the father of Android, Andy Rubin announced that the Essential phone will release in May, it felt like an ambitious deadline to set and evidently, the timeline set was not achieved. In fact, only late last month did the phone get certification from FCC (Federal Communications Commission).

Andy Rubin has since announced that the Essential phone will go sale in August and it is to be seen whether the startup will hold true to its words this time around. It was reported in the beginning of July that Essential had reportedly lost two of its highest ranking officers- VP of Marketing Brian Wallace and Head of Communications Andy Fouché. Both Wallace and Fouché are industry veterans having held senior positions in Samsung and Microsoft respectively. Wallace even worked on Samsung’s famous “Next Big Thing” campaign.

It is now being reported that Essential has lost its Head of UX Liron Damir to Google Inc. Reports also suggest that Damir has joined Google Inc. as the head of UX for Google Home. Interestingly that is not an upgrade on the position he held at Essential.

Andy Rubin’s dream project seems to be going through a rough patch after much-discussed launch delays and now losing three of the best talents in a matter of one month. Whatever may be happening at Essential, we hope to get our hands on the Essential phone as soon as possible.

  • Moto X4 Price Leaked Ahead Of Imminent Launch

Moto X4 Price Leaked Ahead Of Imminent Launch

Lenovo-owned Motorola’s much-anticipated fourth generation Moto X device will reportedly cost around EUR 350 (approx INR 26,500). Moto X4 was expected to launch with Moto Z2 Force but that was not the case, unfortunately .

Interestingly, the reported price is in the same region as the previous devices in the X line-up. The price leaked is for the 32 GB storage variant suggesting the Moto X4 may only launch with one storage capacity. The Moto X Style which was launched back in 2015 at a similar price of INR 27,000.

Moto X devices have been well received in the past and the Moto X4 was widely expected to be launched along with the Moto Z2 Force. There have been leaks aplenty about the Moto X4 just like the rest of the smartphones on the face of this planet. Rumours suggest a 5-inch full HD display. The Moto X4 will also run Android 7.1.1 out of the box and house a respectable 3,800 mAh battery.

In addition, it is rumoured to be powered by a Snapdragon 630 SoC, and launch in 3GB RAM/32Gb storage and 4GB RAM/32Gb storage variants. The camera is rumoured to be a dual-lens setup, with a 12-megapixel primary and an 8-megapixel secondary camera at the back along with a 16 megapixel selfie shooter at the front of the device. Rumoured to have an IP68 rating makes the Moto X4 an interesting entrant to the sub-30k category where it competes with the mighty Honor 8 Pro. QuickCharge 3.0, NFC and hopefully all the important sensors are expected to make it into the smartphone setup on the Moto X4.

The sub-30k category once dominated by Oneplus and Xiaomi has opened up since Oneplus 5 was released with a 32,999 price tag for its 6Gb RAM/64GB storage variant and Xiaomi’s last true flagship launch was the Mi5 last year. Moto X4 will compete with Honor 8 Pro’s flagship specs but a heavily skinned EMUI with its stock-ish Android experience and mid-range specs. Do you think the Moto X4 will be able to make a mark in the Indian market?

  • Lenovo To Launch The ‘Killer’ K8 Note On 9th August

Lenovo To Launch The ‘Killer’ K8 Note On 9th August

Lenovo India has unveiled its next ‘killer’ smartphone, the Lenovo K8 Note. After recently showing up on a Geeksbench, Lenovo India has confirmed that the K8 Note will be the latest offering in the K Note series and will launch on August 9th.

The Geekbench stats show that the new K8 Note will run on Android Nougat 7.1.1 out of the box. Powering the device will be a deca-core MediaTekek Helio X20 processor and 4 GB of RAM. Other rumoured specs are a 5.5-inch display and 32 GB internal storage.

The Lenovo Note series has been a budget offering of super fast devices and the K8 Note looks all set to continue the trend with the rumoured MediaTek Helio X20 chipset under the hood. Lenovo India itself has gone all out this time, teasing its followers that the new-age fast device will kill the ordinary speed. Lenovo India’s social media has been hard at work trending the #MyNeedForSpeed, encouraging people to choose their device for its lightning fast speed.

Lenovo K6 Note was released back in December 2016 powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset with 4GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The K6 Note was well-received for its pricing and performance. It was widely reported that the K7 Note will succeed the K6 Note but Lenovo seems to have dropped the idea because of the potential ‘Note 7’ reference. The K8 Note will be K6 Note’s India-exclusive successor and the rumoured specs surely back that up. It is also reported that the K8 Note will be manufactured at Lenovo’s Chennai-based plant.

The Lenovo K8 Note seems to be the ideal successor of the snappy K6 Note if you go by the specs at least. We will hold our judgment and wait to get our hands on the device that will launch on August 9th in India. What are your thoughts on the new K8 Note? Let us know in the comments below.

UPDATE – Lenovo has sent out press invites for the launch of the ‘killer’ K8 Note on 9th August at 11:30 am with the #KillerNote.
