Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G Receives FCC Certification Before Launch

Samsung was one of the first companies to launch a foldable smartphone. The Galaxy Fold was first introduced in February 2019 and had a scheduled launch date set later in April. Unfortunately, the commercial availability of the device has since been delayed due to multiple instances of malfunctioning caused by a premature release.

It is now reported that Samsung will also launch a new Galaxy Fold variant capable of 5G networking, as seen in an FCC (Federal Communications Commission) certification.

    Galaxy Fold

The South Korean electronics company will most likely launch the upcoming 5G variant alongside the standard Galaxy Fold model. The tech giant has reportedly fixed all the issues that had plagued the device pre-launch and is expected to be available soon. Both the 4G and 5G variants of the Galaxy Fold will probably have identical features and specifications, except connectivity and battery size. The standard version is a dual SIM device with 4380mAh battery capacity while the 5G model is only equipped with a single SIM and slightly smaller 4235mAh battery.

5G network bandwidth has yet to see widespread commercial adoption in various countries developed and developing alike. In countries like India where even 4G network has not had complete penetration, it is unlikely to see the release of any devices capable of the faster bandwidth. South Korea, on the other hand, has seen great integration with 5G and devices capable of it. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 5G is one of the biggest examples with over 1 million units sold in just a short amount of time.

Besides, Samsung has reportedly been working on a new foldable smartphone with a curved edge. It is highly unlikely that any of the aforementioned foldable phones would sport the new design immediately. Since Samsung has announced that a new foldable phone will be launched annually, it is probable that the Galaxy Fold 2 may incorporate the new aesthetical feature.

The upcoming foldable handsets are expected to release around the launch of the Galaxy Note 10, probably between August end and September. More information regarding this will soon be available in the coming weeks.

    Nokia

Rumours call the would-be flagship smartphone the successor of Nokia 9 Pureview, these are not confirmed as of yet by the company. The mid-range smartphone, on the other hand, will probably replace the Nokia 8.1. The upcoming rumoured smartphone might be dubbed the Nokia 8.2 and could be a budget 5G capable handset. These new Nokia 5G phones might be the starting point of the company’s shift in focus from lower-segment and mid-segment markets and to the higher priced regions.

The Nokia 9 Pureview’s had a lukewarm reception in the few countries that received it and ever since no other smartphone from the company has competed in the premium segment of smartphones. Nokia recently unveiled the Nokia 2.2 in India and hopefully would follow suit with the announcements of the two rumoured 5G smartphones.

This rollout is expected to happen either later this year or by the year 2020 when the technology will be more mainstream.

    OnePlus’ 5G Plans

OnePlus didn’t specify what its partnership with Qualcomm means and what the companies will do together. Both the companies first started their collaboration in 2017, when they developed a 5G enabled device. • OPPO Shows Off Its 10x Lossless Zoom Technology

OPPO Shows Off Its 10x Lossless Zoom Technology

Oppo held its ‘Get Closer’ event in Barcelona on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 on February 23 to show what it has been working on. The company showed off its camera module with 10x Lossless Zoom technology for smartphones and its plans on developing the 5G technology along with Qualcomm and carriers from around the world.

    Oppo Innovation Event

Oppo started the event by unveiling the world’s first 10x lossless zoom camera module for smartphones. This will provide ten times optical zoom without losing any significant image quality. According to the company, to accommodate a sensor capable of 10x zoom, the size of it needs to be at least 15mm thick. It says they have achieved this capability in a sensor size equal to the one found on the R17 Pro smartphone. The company claims that it had to make the sensor size smaller by using a ‘Periscope Module’ in placing the lenses. It also used a ‘D-Cut’ optical lens, which is “like making two parallel cuts on a circular lens”. This design will reduce the thickness of the lens whilst still producing the desired optical performance.

Oppo has achieved this technology in a triple rear camera setup containing a 48MP main sensor, a wide-angle sensor and the aforementioned telephoto sensor. The telephoto sensor is capable of taking shots varying in focal lengths from 16mm to 160mm, thus giving the users 10x lossless zoom capability. The lens, to avoid a quality loss while taking images, also has Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The company has announced that a device with this technology will be launched in Q2 of this year.

The company also revealed that it has successfully tested a 5G ready prototype late last year based on the Oppo Find X smartphone. According to senior executives, the company will further partner with telecom operators around the world to bring this technology in smartphones this year. All the new technologies announced at the event are expected to make their way into the real world products soon.

LG to Launch An ‘Attachable Dual-Screen’ with the V50 ThinQ

LG is expected to launch the next-generation of its flagship smartphones, the G8 ThinQ and the V50 ThinQ, at the Mobile World Congress 2019. The V50 ThinQ will be one of the first smartphones to support 5G networks. Reports were rife that LG might use the MWC stage to announce their take on a foldable smartphone but they all turned out to be inaccurate. LG has declared it won’t be releasing a foldable smartphone in 2019. Instead, it will launch a distinctive accessory in the form of an “Attachable Dual-Screen” which will be compatible with V50 ThinQ.

    LG’s Attachable Dual Screen

A senior LG executive has confirmed the launch of the attachable dual screen accessory for the upcoming LG flagship smartphone. The innovative accessory will be an attachable flip-cover style display for the V50 ThinQ. Interestingly, the V10 and the V20 were known for a secondary display, which was located on top of the main display. LG discontinued this feature since the V30, instead relying on a software counterpart of it. The LG V50 ThinQ with the attachment may end up looking like the ZTE Axon M, which was the first dual-screen smartphone.

The V50 ThinQ is expected to sport a 6.4-inch OLED display with a wide notch up top. The device will reportedly run on the latest Snapdragon 855 SoC from Qualcomm. As the device will be 5G compatible, it is likely to feature the X50 modem from Qualcomm. Previous reports have claimed that running 5G generates a lot of heat, therefore, the upcoming smartphone is likely to have some sort of cooling technology. The device can have the vapour chamber technology that it had previously showcased. As far as optics go, the device will feature 5 cameras in total. This would comprise of three cameras on the back and two front-facing cameras housed in the notch.

  • OnePlus Will Showcase A 5G Smartphone At MWC 2019

OnePlus Will Showcase A 5G Smartphone At MWC 2019

The Mobile World Congress or MWC will kick off on the 25th of February 2019.  This years show is primarily focused on 5G.  5G has also been the focus of the tech industry since mid 2018. This year however, there may finally be devices that will support the fifth generation of mobile networks aka 5G.

OnePlus, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, had promised to release a 5G enabled device in 2019. And OnePlus has confirmed that a prototype will be available to try and experience the future of mobile networks.

    OnePlus’s statement reads:

OnePlus, at Qualcomm’s booth (Hall 3 Stand 3E10), invites all to connect and communicate with our community over a 5G network. Attendees will also be able to experience the capabilities of 5G gaming on a OnePlus 5G prototype. Keep an eye out for the limited-edition Qualcomm x OnePlus pin badge, only available at the OnePlus stand

OnePlus 5G Device, What We Know?

This OnePlus 5G device will not just be a prototype, OnePlus plans on releasing the device in a few months. The device will have some flagship level specifications. It would feature the Snapdragon 855 and the Qualcomm X50 chip to support 5G networks. The device may also be a little thick, as the 5G modem requires more space inside. OnePlus said last year that this device will not be the OnePlus 7, but rather a separate series altogether, so it may not be available in high volumes, and ,ay just end up being a limited edition device.

The OnePlus 5G prototype that will be showcased. may not end up being the final product that will launch later this year. The device will also be considerably more expensive. The cost of equipping a smartphone with 5G capable chips is expensive at this point so expect a US $200 to US $300 ( roughly Rs. 14000 to Rs. 20,000) difference in the price. This would mean the Indian price of the OnePlus 5G smartphone may be around Rs. 60,000.

  • LG Could Launch Both The G8 And LG V50 ThinQ At MWC 2019

LG Could Launch Both The G8 And LG V50 ThinQ At MWC 2019

LG has seen better days. There was a time when the manufacturer was ahead in innovation and was loved by all. But times changed and LG didn’t. Now struggling to keep their mobile division alive, LG has to give all it’s got. And looks like that’s what it will do. New reports have suggested that LG is planning to launch the LG G8 and the LG V50 ThinQ together at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The differentiating factor would be, that the V50 ThinQ will support 5G.

    LG G7+ThinQ

This is unusual for LG, as it generally launched the G series in the first half and the V series in the second. But it seems they have to try everything they have got this time. The V50 ThinQ will be the first smartphone by LG to support 5G.

LG G8 and V50 ThinQ Specifications

Specifications wise, there is not a lot that is going to be different between the two phones. Both are expected to be equipped with a Snapdragon 855 chipset, a 6-inch display with a notch. The battery capacity will be 3500mAh for the G8 and 4000mAh for the V50 ThinQ. You can also expect a vapor cooling  chamber in the V50 ThinQ because of the 5G modem. The phones may arrive in 2 variants each, One with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The V40 had 5 cameras in total, so expect a similar setup in both the phones.

This will be Huawei’s first foldable phone. This will also be the company’s first 5G phone. From the teaser, we can’t make out much details, but it seems like the foldable phone will fold inwards, much like the Royole FlexPai. The phone may also very well be the first 5G compatible phone.

    Flexible Smartphones And 5G

Flexible smartphones seem to be the rage these days. Companies like Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi putting all their resources to get the formula right. We have seen the demo of a foldable phone by Samsung at its developer’s conference November last year. It is speculated to be unveiled at the Unpacked event that is supposed to happen on February 20.

The concept of 5G on the other hand, is in a very nascent stage. Every cellular provider has promised the idea of 5G, but the timeline on when we will see a an actual 5G connection is vague. But it is expected that after many smartphone makers move to 5G modems in their products; we would soon see these providers switching gears and making it readily available.

    What is 5G?

5G is the newest generation of cellular mobile communication which succeeds 4G, 3G and 2G.  It aims to provide higher data rates, reduction in cost, energy saving, and an even larger connectivity network compared to its predecessors. Theoretically, the 5G compatible device can reach a data transfer speed of up to 20 GBPS which is several folds faster than the current standards. The technology is currently under rapid development and a lot is expected from it in the coming years.

    Foldable Huawei Smartphone Expectations

Huawei has not yet enlightened the consumers about a foldable smartphone but a past investor meeting revealed some key details what can be expected from a foldable Huawei smartphone.  Reportedly, the company is working on a foldable phone that folds inwards like the Galaxy F.
