LG Teases An Upcoming Dual Screen Smartphone Ahead Of IFA 2019

IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) 2019 in Berlin, Germany is just around the corner kicking off on 6th September 2019. The event will have various OEMs showcase their technological innovations and speak of future endeavours. Korean electronics giant LG is known to make an appearance in the annual event and for its invitation, has shared a video which teases an upcoming dual-screen smartphone.

OEMs such as Samsung and Huawei are working towards a new trend which is foldable smartphones. These devices feature a bendable display which the companies use to minimize their large display footprint by folding onto themselves. On the other hand, LG is moving in an entirely different direction. The LG V50 ThinQ from 2018 released alongside an attachable display that gave it the same functionality as a foldable smartphone. The Dual Screen folio screen featured a 6.2-inch OLED panel and gave users an additional screen for multitasking, playing games or taking pictures.

Furthermore, LG’s shared video invitation prior to IFA 2019 showcases a similar technology being employed. The upcoming smartphone is probably the LG V60 ThinQ which will carry forward the attachable screen. In the video, it is visible that the second display appears to be identical in size to the display of the actual phone. It would be a significant upgrade over its past iteration which had thick bezels and a smaller size overall. Additionally, the Display Screen case will also feature a small outer display for notifications, date and time, giving the device a total of 3 screens.

  • Microsoft Teases A New Dual-Screen Surface Device

Microsoft Teases A New Dual-Screen Surface Device

Sources have uncovered that Microsoft has showcased a new dual-screen Surface device within the company. The device was demonstrated to the team working on the new 2 in 1 with the help of a video reel showcasing the new Microsoft Surface with dual-screen prototype hardware.

Codenamed Centaurus, Microsoft has been hard at work regarding the upcoming dual-screen device for about 2 years now. Microsoft Surface is set to pave the way for a new breed of dual-screen tablet and laptop hybrids with its unique new designs. The company had also had plans for a smaller pocketable Surface variant, code-named Andromeda, that had its development halted for Centaurus. The dual-screen laptop prototype (Centaurus) was first heard of in December 2018 with similarities drawing it closer to Microsoft’s Courier tablet concept.

The Surface team at Microsoft demonstrated the hardware, long before any official announcements, showcasing various dual-screen prototypes for it. Centaurus being openly shown to the employees does point at the possibility of the development stages reaching its final cycles with estimates putting the release by year-end or early 2020.

Microsoft’s Centaurus (latest version of Surface) will also be receiving the Microsoft Windows Lite version, making it one of the first devices to run on the Operating System. Windows Lite is a new slimmed down version of Windows for dual-screen devices and Chromebook competitors. Intel’s new stance on ultrabooks and push towards dual-screened devices with more added functionality and productive uses much like the Lenovo Yoga Book C930 is expected to popularise the idea of a dual display device.

Microsoft besides the Centaurus has also showcased the fully functional xCloud, the cloud game streaming platform. More details on the online gaming platform will come on E3 2019 on the 8th of June. The company pitches the cloud gaming service, not as a replacement for Xbox consoles but rather a way to resume the games users were playing on any device, with these upcoming light and portable dual-screened devices.

  • Intel’s Showcases Twin Screen Gaming Laptop At Computex 2019

Intel’s Showcases Twin Screen Gaming Laptop At Computex 2019

Intel, the chipmaking company has a lot of buzz going around its various announcements (such as Project Athena) and prototypes that have been making rounds all over the internet. The company was seen highlighting one of those prototypes in Computex 2019 all the way from its Santa Clara Lab in the headquarters.

Honeycomb Glacier may not seem like the name for a gaming system but Intel gets a pass on this for its innovation. Intel has supplied ample horsepower within this compact laptop. The key feature of this prototype is Intel’s attempt to place two full displays in the machine for an enhanced gaming experience.

    Intel

The device is outfitted with a 1080p display panel for its main 15.6-inch screen while the secondary panel receives a 720p 12.3-inch 1920 x 720 display. Intel had partnered with Razer for the original Switchblade prototype back in 2011, the first laptop to have an entire screen as a touchpad, making this attempt their second endeavour for dual screens.

    Intel

Intel sets itself apart from the numerous other OEMs, that have implemented a dual screen format, by actually having a second screen that does not necessitates having you look away from the primary screen. Users do not have to look down or divert their attention with a simple inclusion of a double hinge mechanism that raises the second screen to just below eye level that compliments the main screen.

A unique hinge mechanism gives users the freedom of the elevation and angle that automatically stays in whatever position it was propped up on. This was achieved by one-way roller mechanical clutch. Pressing on a small black button on the left side disengages the clutch to fold the laptop. This special mechanism provides space for the cooling solution built specifically for the specially placed motherboard with a single fan.

The prototype, Honeycomb Glacier had been reportedly running on a 45W 8-core i9 Intel CPU and NVIDIA GTX 1070, both units being overclocked. The near eye level hinge houses a Tobii eye-tracking camera, that enables smoother user interaction with the second screen interface in different applications like Discord and Twitch for gamers or Slack for work. Simply drawing your eye to the application puts it on focus.

Intel is optimistic about Honeycomb Glaciers new design and functionality that has generated much interest from other manufacturers seeking to derive from it. Dual-screen laptops are making their way into mainstream reality, soon becoming a common happenstance.

  • Samsung Patents Design For Folding Phone With Dual Displays

Samsung Patents Design For Folding Phone With Dual Displays

Samsung has been on a patent-filing spree recently. From in-display cameras to an entire display which doubles up as the fingerprint scanner, they’ve got it all covered. Recently, one of Samsung’s long pending designs, that of the folding phone. The folding phone was shown by the company at the Samsung Developer Conference held earlier this month and the device is expected to enter production in the early parts of next year. Now, Samsung has patented a folding dual display smartphone, quite different form the existing foldable phone.

The patent for this new phone was filed early this year, in May. It has now been published and describes a smartphone with two separate housings. Each of these have an almost full-sized display. While the design of the foldable was shown, it has many variations compared to this patent. The new patent lists two full sized screens which work independently. The foldable phone can either be used as a smartphone when folded or as a tablet when opened fully. Android is also developing a separate OS for the device, to help support it better.

    The Patent

The two display housings are independent of each other and area pulls together by the means of a magnet. You can also fold the device in a way to have both the displays facing outside. The patent describes the phone to be extremely versatile in terms of functionality and lists some of its functions. Data such as the time, status bar, battery and signal strength are shown on the left display. You can also use this screen to display a keyboard, while the content is shown on the other display of the phone.

The smartphone also has two cameras. Additionally, a camera, flash and speaker are also placed on the front of the phone. The display on the left also has a camera, lighting sensor and a proximity sensor. Additionally, the phone will also have an audio jack which will be placed on either the top or the bottom of the phone. The volume and power buttons are placed on the right side of the display.

While the concept is pretty impressive, we are not sure whether this phone will make it into production. It is however possible that Samsung may take some cues from this and apply it to their other phones.

  • Nubia X Launched With Dual Display And Dual Fingerprint Sensor

Nubia X Launched With Dual Display And Dual Fingerprint Sensor

Nubia has launched the Nubia X at an event held in China and the phone is every bit unique. The Nubia X has two displays, two fingerprint sensors and does not have a front facing camera. That’s right, the company eliminated the front-facing camera to ensure a bezel-less display. However, they do have a solution for the same. The smartphone has been launched at a price of CNY 3,299.

    Dual Display

The Nubia X sports a 6.26 inch 2280 x 1080 px resolution primary display, on the front. The display has a 19:9 aspect ratio and is curved. Despite having a very thin forehead and chin, the device sports a 93.6% screen-to-body ratio. On the back, it has a 5.1 inch 1520 x 720 px  secondary display. The company claims that the display can be used for HD selfies, wallpapers, custom signatures, dynamic pictures and advanced controls for high quality gaming.

As far as the lack of a front-facing camera, the Nubia makes up for it by having a display on its back as well.  This helps the user to utilise the main, dual camera setup to click ‘high quality’ selfies. The dual camera setup has 16 MP + 24 MP sensors. The device runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and has 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM along with internal storage of up to 256 GB.

Under the hood, it packs a 3,800 mAh battery which will power the phone and the two devices comfortably, according to the company. The Nubia X does so by using technologies such as NeoPower 3.0. Additionally, it also has two fingerprint sensors, placed on either sides of the device. The dual side-mounted sensors are to increase convenience for users and allow them to access the device with either hand.

The Nubia X is sure as unique as it is unconventional. The questions still lingers as to whether the features are actually good enough to bring in a new level of convenience. As of now, the Nubia X has only been launched in China. It will retail at a price of CNY 3,299 for its base variant.
