Apple iPhone X Was The Best Selling Smartphone In Q1 Of 2018

Launched in September of 2017 for a whopping US$ 999 starting price, the Apple iPhone X had its fair share of doubters. The new design complete with a notch initially did not impress many. The iPhone X also did not have the famed Touch ID and was replaced Apple’s own facial recognition system, now known as Face ID. With so many changes and a record high price, the iPhone X was still the best selling smartphone of Q1 of 2018.

    Apple

In a new report by Strategy Analytics, Apple sold 16 million units of the iPhone X in the quarter, making it the best selling smartphone. Apple did announce record profits for the quarter and Tim Cook claimed that the Apple iPhone was the best selling smartphone in many markets. Apple announced quarterly revenue of US$ 61.1 billion, a year-over-year growth of 16% which is much higher than its street estimates.

A close second on the list of best selling smartphones was the iPhone 8 with 12.5 million units. The iPhone 8 Plus, launched along with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X was the third best selling smartphone with 8.3 million units sold. At number four on the list was the iPhone 7, a smartphone launched in 2016, with 5.6 million units sold during the quarter.

    iPhone 8, 8 Plus

Xiaomi’s “Desh Ka Smartphone” Redmi 5A was fifth on the list with 5.4 million units sold. Credit has to be given to the Samsung Galaxy S9 for coming in sixth on the list. The smartphone was launched in late-February and went on sale in March. In all, the top six smartphones accounted for 1 in every 7 smartphones shipped in the world during the quarter.

    Redmi 5A

It is a mind-boggling statistic that the top five best selling smartphones were from the same company, Apple. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which were believed to be unimpressive when compared to the iPhone X managed to be among the best selling smartphones of the quarter. This report also contradicts many claims from analysts that the Apple iPhone X is not in demand anymore and the Apple is planning to stop the production of the iPhone X.

With smartphones like the OnePlus 6 launching in May, more smartphones would be thriving to enter that list for the coming quarters of 2018.

  • Most Apple iPhone X Users Love Their iPhone But Not Siri

Most Apple iPhone X Users Love Their iPhone But Not Siri

The Apple iPhone X, even before its launch, garnered a lot of attention for its possible design. On 12th September, Apple confirmed those rumours and unveiled the iPhone X with a notch and nearly bezel-less design. Face ID, introduced with the iPhone X as a replacement for Touch ID was met with scepticism at first but, has since been praised for accuracy and ease of use. This was further reaffirmed by a recent survey conducted by Creative Strategies which concluded that 97% of early adopters of iPhone X are satisfied by their new iPhone.

    [amazon_link asins=’B072LPF91D’ template=’ProductAd’ store=’igyaan-21′ marketplace=’IN’ link_id=’dfd5c058-47aa-11e8-b3e7-8d7bfeef1eb5′]

According to the survey, 85% of the participants said that they were “very satisfied” with the iPhone X. Creative Strategies analyst Ben Bajarin has said that this is among the highest he has ever seen in all the customer satisfaction studies they have conducted across a range of technology products. 12% respondents said they were “satisfied” with the iPhone X. The remaining 3% were unsatisfied to various degrees.

Apple conducted a similar survey of 451 people and said that 99% respondents were satisfied with their iPhone X. However, Creative Strategies has 1746 people which meant there was more room for slight variance. According to the research firm, the respondents were profiled as early adopters based on a series of questions about their purchasing habits. Also, early adopters tend to be more critical than mainstream consumers of technology, according to the research firm.

Coming down to the nitty-gritty of the survey, Face ID and battery life saw satisfaction rates of above 90%. Other features were also very well accepted by early adopters of the iPhone X, apart from Siri. The Apple voice assistant scored only a 20% satisfaction rate among the 1746 respondents.

Siri has been under the cosh recently after details about the dwindling HomePod sales were released. It is believed that HomePod has had an underwhelming start mainly because of its price and Siri. Its competitors like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are considered to be far superior in smartphones as well as smart speakers. With WWDC 2018 coming up, we expect Apple to unveil new Siri features which will make the user experience much better than what it is right now.

  • Apple iPhone X Accounts For 35% Profit Made By Smartphones in 2017

Apple iPhone X Accounts For 35% Profit Made By Smartphones in 2017

2017 was a great year for smartphone enthusiasts. We saw thin bezels and tall displays become a norm and new smartphone designs like the iPhone X with a notch. However, that innovation in smartphones did not translate into desired sales as global mobile profits decreased by 1% year-on-year in Q4 of 2017. For Apple, though, it was not a gloomy year by any means. The Apple iPhone X alone generated 35% of the total mobile industry profit as Apple grew by 1% year-on-year in Q4 of 2017.

    Apple iPhone X
    Galaxy S8

According to the latest report by Counterpoint Research, Apple remained the most profitable premium smartphone brand, capturing about 86% of the total handset market profits.

Apple grew 1 percent (YoY) even with the iPhone X being available for only two months in Q4 2017. The iPhone X alone generated 21 percent of total industry revenue and 35 percent of total industry profits during the quarter.

The share of iPhone X is likely to grow as it advances further into its life-cycle. Additionally, the longer shelf life of all iPhones ensured that Apple still has eight out of top 10 smartphones, including its three-year-old models, generating the most profits compared to current competing smartphones from other OEMs

Interestingly, the iPhone X generated 5 times more profit than the combined profits of over 600 Android smartphone makers during the fourth quarter of 2017. Thanks to a host of budget smartphones on offer by Chinese OEMs, their cumulative profits crossed US$ 1.3 billion during Q4 2017. Interestingly, the average selling price of their smartphones increased year-on-year.

These figures tell a curious tale about the iPhone X, which was heavily criticised for its price and design at the time of its launch. However, with time, the design of the iPhone X has set an industry wide trend and the price tag has not stopped it from being the most successful smartphone of 2017. Sales of the iPhone X are expected to increase further when the next generation of iPhones is launched later in 2018. The price of the iPhone X will go down and potential iPhone buyers will go for the iPhone X as the design of 2018 iPhones is expected to be similar to the iPhone X.

  • Apple iPhone X Blush Gold Leaked In Live Images

Apple iPhone X Blush Gold Leaked In Live Images

Apple recently launched the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus (Product) RED for a starting price of US$ 649. Well before the announcement of the new red iPhones, the Apple iPhone X Blush Gold colour variant was leaked by prominent leaker Roland Quandt. Now, it looks like the launch of the iPhone X Blush Gold is imminent as images of the new colour have now surfaced online.

Every smartphone maker has to share details of a new smartphone in the making with the United States Federal Communications Commission. According to the documents obtained, the gold colour of the iPhone X was filed much before the launch of the iPhone X in September. While many of the documents were available soon after submission, external photos and other sensitive details were subject to a six-month confidentiality clause. That period is now over and the photos of the iPhone X Blush Gold have been released.

It appears that Apple had planned to launch the iPhone X in three colours, just like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. However, the company could have run into some manufacturing issues which led the company into canning the gold colour variant. Prior to the iPhone X launch as well, there were many rumours that claimed Apple would launch its marquee iPhone in three colour variants. Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities had said that Apple was experiencing production issues for a iPhone X Blush Gold. He also suggested that the company could launch the iPhone X Blush Gold at a later date to give Apple time to work out the problems.

    iPhone X Blush Gold

Interestingly, the stainless steel frame on the iPhone X Blush Gold also has a shade of gold. This could be one of the aspects of this colour variant that was causing trouble. It is worth noting that the Blush Gold iPhone 8, which has an aluminium frame was launched in time along with other colour variants.

Whether Apple will launch the iPhone X in the Blush Gold colour variant is yet to be seen. Roland Quandt had claimed that this colour variant was in production and could be launched soon. However, there has been no news since then about a possible iPhone X being launched in a Blush Gold colour.

  • Huawei P20 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S9+ vs iPhone X Vs Moto Z2 Force: Camera Shootout!

Huawei P20 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S9+ vs iPhone X Vs Moto Z2 Force: Camera Shootout!

Huawei recently launched its 2018 flagship Android smartphone, the Huawei P20 Pro. Apart from its design which is inspired by the iPhone X, the most exciting feature of the device is its camera capabilities. The P20 Pro is the first-ever smartphone to have a triple-camera setup on the back. Its global price is EUR 899 (Rs 71000 approx.) but, it is expected to have a lower price tag in India.

Over the years, camera performance of a smartphone has taken precedence over other features. A crappy camera can be the downfall of an otherwise great smartphone. The Essential Ph-1 is a great example of that. Similarly, a great camera can uplift a smartphone with other visible flaws. The 2016 Google Pixel smartphones did not have a great design, add-on features like wireless charging or water resistance. However, they had the best camera on the market which overshadowed much of their flaws.

So, we took the top flagship smartphones on the market right now and put their cameras through the paces. The smartphones in question here are the Huawei P20 Pro, the Galaxy S9+, Apple iPhone X and the Moto Z2 Force.

  • Apple iPhone X (Product) RED Looks Stunning And Could Launch Soon

Apple iPhone X (Product) RED Looks Stunning And Could Launch Soon

Apple launched the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (Product) RED variants in March 2017. This meant that many expected an iPhone X (Product) RED launch at the Apple Keynote on March 27th. However, that did not happen and instead, it launched 9.7 inch iPad. But, it is still possible for Apple to launch a red-coloured iPhone X and a new render imagines what it might look like.

Steve H, a renowned leaker tweeted that an unfamiliar source says Apple will launch the iPhone X (Product) RED. He has, however, conceded that it is not certain. The uncertainties aside, the renders of the iPhone X look stunning and it could be a great addition to the iPhone X lineup. Apple’s WWDC 2018 conference will commence in June, and will mostly concentrate on the software side of Apple.

Again, Apple did not launch the iPhone 7 (Product) RED at a separate event. This means that a launch of the iPhone X (Product) RED could happen anytime soon if Apple has planned it. A few days ago, a leak suggested that Apple was working on a Blush Gold variant of the iPhone X. In fact, it went as far to say that it is in (Product)ion already.

A lot of smartphone maker off late have launched a “Special Variant” of their popular smartphones. Interestingly, Apple kind of started the trend with the iPhone 7 (Product) RED launch. Subsequently, the OnePlus 5T, Mi A1 and Honor 7X were launched in the special red colour variant. However, it is fair to say that a red coloured iPhone X will gather much more fanfare than the rest.

    iPhone X Blush Gold

If Apple does launch the iPhone X (Product) RED, it will contradict a few reports about the flagship smartphone. However, launching a new colour variant means the company still believes that the iPhone X can do even better than its current situation.

  • Apple To Begin Trial Production Of 2018 iPhone Lineup In Q2 Of 2018

Apple To Begin Trial Production Of 2018 iPhone Lineup In Q2 Of 2018

There have been many rumours and speculations about the successors of the Apple iPhone X. Apple is expected to launch three new iPhones at the end of 2018. Two models are expected to have an OLED display, and the third one will have an IPS LCD display. According to a report, the company is expected to begin a trial run production of these three smartphones by the end of Q2 2018. This enables the company to have enough stock at the time of launch.

Apple was hit by the production delay of the Apple iPhone X and the company is taking precautionary steps not to repeat the same mistake. Additionally, the company is also focusing on 3D sensors for Face ID, as all three iPhones are expected support Face ID. The report also adds that there is no surging in the order of internal hardware components. Since Apple is expected to launch the successor of the iPhone SE in Q3 of 2018, the revenue generation is expected to go upwards.

    iPhone
    2018 Apple iPhone lineup
    2018 Apple iPhone Lineup Specs

Except for the display, these three iPhones will have identical specifications. The models with an OLED display will have a 5.85 and 6.45 inch display. Whereas, the LCD model will have a 6.1 inch display. These devices will be powered by a next-generation A12 chipset with 64GB or 256GB storage.

The iPhone with 5.85 inch OLED display will be the most affordable of the lot. To make that happen, Apple might take a step back and use Aluminium frame instead of Stainless steel. The device is expected to have a dual camera setup similar to the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone X Plus (tentative name) with a 6.45 inch OLED display could be the costliest iPhone of this series. Which is expected to have premium features like dual camera setup with dual OIS and. a stainless steel frame.

The iPhone with 6.1 inch display will be priced between these devices. It is expected to have similar internals as of the 5.85 inch iPhone. Additionally, the usage of an LCD panel will drive down the overall cost of production, compared an OLED model.

  • Apple iPhone X Successor Will Be The Cheapest 2018 iPhone With OLED Display

Apple iPhone X Successor Will Be The Cheapest 2018 iPhone With OLED Display

It is time to now look forward to the iPhone X successor in 2018. Each year, there are a handful of launches that eagerly waited, and the iPhone launch is one of them. So far, we have seen multiple reports corroborating that Apple will launch three iPhones in September. However, we have assumed that the LCD variant will be the cheapest and the iPhone X Plus will be the priciest.

A new report by a senior analyst at Digitimes, Luke Lin says otherwise. Lin has been keeping a keen eye on the supply chain of Apple and believes that the like-for-like iPhone X successor will indeed be the most affordable iPhone in 2018. Although there will be an iPhone with an LCD display, it won’t be the cheapest. As the pricing will largely depend on the display type, RAM, and storage of all the 2018 iPhones.

    2018 Apple iPhone
    iPhone X Plus Concept

The successor to the iPhone X will stick to the 5.85 inch screen size with an OLED display panel. However, Apple managed to get the bill of materials down 10% from the US$ 412.75 of the current model. The OLED display accounted for a big chunk of that. Next up will be the 6.1 inch iPhone with an LCD display. The 6.45 inch iPhone X Plus with an OLED panel will be the priciest iPhone in 2018.

Obviously, there will be more than just the display and RAM differences between the three iPhones. Apple will use different camera configurations and maybe, the iPhone X Plus will have a few exclusive features to justify its possible exorbitant price tag.

A couple of months ago, Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most trusted Apple analysts released some information about the 2018 iPhone lineup. The iPhone X 2018 (tentative name) will have the same 5.85 inch OLED display found on the current iPhone X. It will have a 2,700 to 2,800mAh battery, supplied primarily by Unimicron. The 2018 iPhone X will also be powered by a new chipset and is expected to feature advanced Face ID.

    Apple
    iPhone X

The iPhone X Plus will have a 6.5-inch OLED display in a body that might not be much bigger than the iPhone 8 Plus’. It is expected to have a 3,400 to 3,500 mAh battery supplied Unimicron.

  • Apple iPhone X In Blush Gold Colour Could Be Launched Soon

Apple iPhone X In Blush Gold Colour Could Be Launched Soon

The 2017 iPhone lineup saw a huge shakeup. The iPhone X was a big departure from what we were accustomed to seeing and the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus also offered great upgrades over the previous generations. Another big difference between the iPhone 8 and iPhone X was the colour variants. While the iPhone X is only available in a Silver and Space Gray, the iPhone 8 is available in Space Gray, Silver and Blush Gold.

It now seems that the iPhone X will also be available in the Blush Gold colour variant. Prominent leaker on Twitter teased the iPhone X with a few pictures of the production unit. He has not mentioned a timeline for the introduction of the new colour variant. But, with a few Apple events scheduled, the launch could happen very soon. The pricing of the iPhone X Blush Gold colour will be the same as the regular iPhone X available in the market right now.

The Blush Gold colour is a mix of Gold and Rose Gold. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are the only two devices available in this colour as of now. If the iPhone X is indeed launched in this colour, it looks like the upcoming 2018 iPhone lineup will be launched in Blush Gold as well.

The Apple iPhone X has a 5.8-inch 2436 x 1125 px OLED True Tone Super Retina display.

  • Android P Might Have iPhone X Like Gesture-Based Navigation

Android P Might Have iPhone X Like Gesture-Based Navigation

Google recently released the first developer preview of Android P. Since this is the first preview, the official version will be very different and new features will be added and discarded.

Reported by 9to5Google, it is possible that Android P will have native gesture-based navigation, similar to the iPhone X. While it might seem a bit far-fetched, it is possible. Google has already conceded that the “notch” is here to stay. The developer preview has support for a notch. Sources have said that an internal build of Android P running the April or May security patch has an iPhone X-like user interface.

    OnePlus 5T Gestures

If this turns out to be true, there will be a lot of debate around the “inspiration” for this decision. However, Xiaomi and OnePlus have already started moving on to gestures. However, OnePlus is still testing the feature in a Beta build. Xiaomi, on the other hand, introduced the feature with Android 8 Oreo for the Mi MIX 2. This means that the Mi MIX 2S will also have this feature out of the box.

Over the years, stock Android OS, for all its stability and beauty, has lacked features that were readily available in custom skins. With a few smartphone makers adopting gestures, this could be a sign for Google. It is high time Google goes a step ahead and introduces a popular feature natively.

With smartphones moving closer to a bezel-less design, it doesn’t make sense to lose out on a little screen real estate because of the navigation buttons. Also, Android’s navigation system needs a little refresh after being so stagnant since its inception.

  • This Device Can Break Into Any iPhone

This Device Can Break Into Any iPhone

Smartphones have become our primary devices very quickly. Our documents, pictures, music, everything resides in our palm thanks to smartphones. Also, over the years, smartphones have come under scrutiny for their lacklustre security. A few months ago, OnePlus 5 was found to be vulnerable to hacking. While that was software based, a new device claims to be able to break into any iPhone.

    GrayKey

A new device called GrayKey looks, ironically, like an Apple TV and can bypass any iPhone’s security code. The device is made by Grayshift, an Atlanta, US-based company and comes to light after the recent debate around company ethics and smartphone security. A couple of years ago, FBI asked Apple to give it access to the iPhones of San Bernardino shooters. Apple declined and FBI discovered that there are third-party services that can break into iPhones. While FBI was able to bypass those iPhones, it is surprising that Apple has not yet closed that backdoor access.

GrayKey has two lightning cables attached to it. The process of hacking into an iPhone starts with the iPhone being connected to the device for two minutes. After two minutes, the iPhone is disconnected and it shows a black screen. The black screen then displays the passcode and other information. However, it is worth noting that this process depends on how complex the passcode. It can even take up to two days to crack the code.

Grayshift claims that even disabled phones can be cracked. Once the iPhone is unencrypted, all the data is downloaded to the GrayKey device. What is even more mindboggling is the price of this device. The GrayKey is available in two variants, the US$ 15000 (Rs 975,675 approx.) model needs an internet connection, and is geofenced to work on a single network. The other variant costs a whopping US$ 30,000 (Rs 1,951,350 approx.) which doesn’t need an internet connection and can bypass devices as the owner wants.

It is worth noting that these devices will be nullified if and when Apple comes up with a fix for this vulnerability.

  • Apple iPhone X Advertisement Shows An iOS Bug

Apple iPhone X Advertisement Shows An iOS Bug

Apple launched the iPhone X with a radical design change. This was the first iPhone to skip the infamous home button in favour of a bezel-less design. This also meant that Apple had to drop Touch ID and introduce an able replacement. Face ID uses 3D sensors for such accuracy which are housed in the now iconic notch. While the iPhone X has been well-received, iOS 11 has had a rocky start. But, it has come a long way since its introduction in September, thanks to timely updates.

It looks like Apple had a quality assurance mess up with the new iPhone X advertisement. Towards the end of the video, a very old iOS 11 bug was spotted by 9to5Mac. The text that was supposed to stay inside the bubble appears a tad faster than the bubble animation. Having a minor glitch on any smartphone OS is common. However, the showcasing of this bug in an official advertisement highlights the bugs-ridden story of iOS 11 so far.

    https://youtu.be/-pF5bV6bFOU

This is not the only bug that the iOS 11 has. There is an unusual UI bug on Music app and there are even screen rotating issues. In fact, we recently reported about the black screen of death as well. There is even a rumour in the industry that, Apple will refine the user experience of the iOS 11 next year, instead of launching the iOS 12. In fact, the company will unveil the new iteration of iOS at WWDC 2018.

    Apple iPhone X Specs

The iPhone X has a 5.8-inch 2436 x 1125 px OLED True Tone Super Retina display. The phone runs iOS 11.1 and is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery which charges through the Apple signature lightning port placed at the bottom of the phone or via wireless charging. Because of the all-glass design, the iPhone 8 also has wireless charging.

    iPhone X

Under the hood, the smartphone has the Apple A11 Bionic chipset with a neural engine, a hexacore processor, 3GB of RAM and storage options of 64GB, and 256GB. The small bezels mean there is no physical home button, which is now replaced with gestures for navigation. Siri is activated by pressing the now larger lock/unlock button. The iPhone X is also IP67 certified for water and dust resistance, and wireless charging.

  • Apple iPhone SE 2 Might Have Wireless Charging

Apple iPhone SE 2 Might Have Wireless Charging

Apple launched the iPhone X, which showcases the best of Apple’s design and engineering. Though it is a great smartphone, the US$ 1,000 price tag makes it a tough buy. Many features of the iPhone X will trickle down to upcoming iPhones. While major iPhone launch will happen in September, rumours about the iPhone SE 2 don’t seem to fade away.

A new leaked back case of the iPhone SE 2 shows design similarities to the iPhone 8. This picture suggests that the iPhone SE 2 will have a glass panel with support for wireless charging. Similarly, the case has round cutouts for the volume buttons, which is distinctive of the iPhone SE design.

    iPhone SE 2

Apple introduced the iPhone SE after the launch of the iPhone 6S. The iPhone SE had hardware similar to the iPhone 6S in a compact shell with aggressive pricing. In fact, the iPhone SE is the cheapest iPhone ever (launch price).

Most of the leaks and rumours about the iPhone SE 2 are very conflicting. A report says that the iPhone SE 2 is expected to follow the iPhone X’s design cues while others have conceded that the device will retain the original iPhone SE design.

    iPhone SE 2
    iPhone SE 2 Concept

Considering the first scenario, if SE 2 comes with an iPhone X like the design, what will be the future of the iPhone 8, which might retail for a much higher price? In the second scenario, the company has to stick with Touch ID.

The certainty of the launch of an iPhone SE 2 is extremely slim. But, the constant leaks are enough to create an air of hope, especially with WWDC 2018 coming up soon.
