  • LG Is Developing An Outward Folding Smartphone

LG Is Developing An Outward Folding Smartphone

LG seems to be gearing up for an exciting 2019. Ever since the inception of smartphones, the form factor has largely remained the same. The year 2019 is expected to showcase smartphones with new form factors. A patent assigned to LG states that the company is developing a unique looking foldable smartphone.

    Foldable LG Smartphone

LG had filed a patent for a foldable smartphone with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office)  and USPTO  (United States Patent and Trademark Office) that has now been granted. In the past, several LG foldable smartphone patents have leaked but the latest patent has a totally different folding style. The new patent reveals an LG smartphone that folds on the outwards vs inwards or rolling.

Samsung has also showcased the Galaxy F smartphone that has an inward folding display. It seems LG wants to leave no stone unturned and is trying to experiment with as many types of foldable devices. The LG patent is detailed enough and clearly explains how LG conceptualises an outward folding smartphone

     Patent Revelations

The outward folding LG device looks like two symmetrically stacked smartphones that have been consolidated by a flexible touchscreen display. The left part of the device conceals a spring operated mechanism that elongates when the smartphone is unfolded outwards. This elongation of the left part allows the foldable display to stay tight and wrinkle-free.

The device when unfolded transforms into a tablet with a widescreen display. When in tablet mode the UI of the device also adjusts automatically for easy operability.  The middle of the display acts as the main navigation bar that has a swipeable list of icons for applications. The device can simultaneously display two different applications on either halves or a single application as per the need.

    Launch Date

The launch date of the outward folding LG smartphone is unknown but the company might showcase some type of foldable smartphone at the upcoming MWC which is scheduled for 25-28 January 2019.

The Poco F1 surely offers excellent value for money but it does fall short in a few areas. Xiaomi is expected to fix these shortcomings on the Poco F2 which has leaked online.

    Poco F2 Design

The year 2018 was the year of the notch and the Poco F1 also had one, though the notch on that device was thick and wide. The leak of the Poco F2 reveals that the upcoming smartphone has a small water drop notch and even thinner bezels. The front-facing selfie camera is housed in the notch at the top of the display. The earpiece for listening to voice calls is built into the top bezel of the Poco F2.

Like its predecessor, the Poco F2 also has right side mounted power button and volume rockers. The rear of the new device also gets a redesign treatment. The dual rear cameras along with the LED flash have been shifted to the top left side of the device while the fingerprint sensor is similarly positioned. It seems that the back panel of the Poco F2 is made out of glass so that the device emanates premium look and feel.

    Leaked Specifications

The Poco F2 has already paid a visit to the Geekbench website which revealed its key specifications. The smartphone will feature the Snapdragon Octa-Core SoC which is also present on its predecessor. The CPU of the device has a base clock frequency of 1.77 GHz which will easily go upwards of 2.0 GHz.

  • Xiaomi Foldable Tablet / Phone Leaks, With Triple Folds

Xiaomi Foldable Tablet / Phone Leaks, With Triple Folds

Xiaomi was founded in the year 2010 and during this 8-9 year period the company has developed several successful products . The company manufactures a wide variety of products ranging from smartphones to TVs. Strangely enough, the company even manufactures luggage trollies and mobility scooters, among many other everyday items. Though the largest contributor to overall revenue for Xiaomi still remains smartphones.

The year 2019 is believed to be the year of smart devices with flexible displays that can be used as both a tablet and a smartphone. Samsung has already announced that the first foldable Galaxy phone will be launched this year. Similarly, Huawei also has big plans for a foldable smartphone in the year 2019. A video leak reveals that Xiaomi already has a functional foldable device.

    Foldable Xiaomi Device

The leaked video of the alleged foldable Xiaomi device is leaked on Twitter by Evan Blass aka evleaks. The video showcases a foldable tablet that can fold into one third than its original size. The video has been captured in a badly lit environment and the Xiaomi branding was nowhere to be seen in the video. However, the User Interface and the icon pack on the device clearly express that the device runs on Xiaomi’s MIUI 10.

Surprisingly the quality of the foldable display panel looks good and the device when folded transforms into a handheld smartphone. The user demonstrates the Google maps application on the foldable tablet / phone which readjusts when the tablet is folded. The device when in its folded state has curved edges that look reminiscent to the non-foldable Samsung Galaxy Edge smartphones. Like Samsung smartphones, Xiaomi might add some functionality to the curved edges of the foldable device.

    Launch Date

Most notably Samsung is also expected to launch the first foldable smartphone in Q1 of 2019 and Xiaomi being their direct competitor might be planning something similar.

  • Xiaomi Is Working On The Android One Powered Mi A3

Xiaomi Is Working On The Android One Powered Mi A3

Xiaomi is a popular smartphone brand in India. The Xiaomi Redmi series smartphones are one of the highest selling devices in India. Apart from the Redmi series, the company also sells the Mi ‘A’ series of smartphones which are based on the Android One platform. In other words, these smartphones run on stock Android which provides for a smooth and bloatware free experience.

The first Android One smartphone that the company launched was the Mi A1 which was followed by the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. The Mi A2 is rated one of the best camera smartphones under the price of Rs 20,000. The device due to its sturdy build and lag free OS experience was appreciated by most. Xiaomi in an attempt continue this streak of successful Android One smartphones is working an all-new Android One device which is believed to be the Mi A3.

    Mi A3 Aka The Orchid_Sprout
    Xiaomi Mi A2

A junior member at XDA developers while digging through the Android 9 Pie based MIUI 10 firmware files discovered a mystery device with the code name “orchid_sprout”. Close inspection revealed that every Android One smartphone manufactured by Xiaomi carries the sprout suffix in their code names.

    • Mi A1 –  tissot_sprout
    • Mi A2 – jasmine_sprout
    • Mi A2 Lite – daisy_sprout

This piece of information clearly indicates the orchid_sprout is indeed an Android One smartphone. Going by the chronological order, the upcoming smartphone will perhaps be the Mi A3 unless the company is planning another surprise. Alas, the source does not disclose any information about the physical overview or any specifications of the Mi A3. Nonetheless the smartphone will have better specifications than its predecessor, the Mi A2.

    Expectations From The Mi A3
    • Better Camera Performance- The camera performance was definitely a distinctive feature of the Mi A2 and the Mi A3 is only expected to take that performance even further.
    • Larger Battery Capacity- Albeit the Mi A2 has an optimised UI which provides a good battery life, it only has a 3,000 mAh battery and larger capacity would surely be appreciated.
    • Thinner Bezels- The left and right bezels of the Mi A2 are quite thin while the top and bottom bezels are quite chunky. Thick top and bottom bezels just did fine in the year 2018 but to step up the game the Mi A3 must have thinner all around bezels and maybe the small unintrusive water drop notch.

The Moto Z4 has a front glass and rear metal build which looks very handsome. The front of the smartphone has a high screen-to-body ratio display with a small water drop notch up top. The right side of the device makes room for the power button and the volume rockers while the left side appears to be completely free from any switches or slots.

The bottom of the Moto Z4 is inhabited by the 3.5 mm audio jack and USB Type-C port while the loudspeaker grille and SIM card slot are placed on the top. The rear of smartphone harbors the protruded single camera + led flash setup, Motorola logo, and the 16-pin magnetic connector. The 16-pin magnetic connector is used to attach Moto Mods which the company sells separately.

  • LG Will Launch A Smartwatch With An Inband Camera

LG Will Launch A Smartwatch With An Inband Camera

The market for smart wearables and smartwatches is growing at a rapid pace. Several companies are working on smartwatches with features that make them stand out of the crowd.  A leaked patent of an LG smartwatch reveals that the company is developing something groundbreaking.

    LG Smartwatch Patent

The patent reveals a smartwatch with a camera sensor built into its strap. The LG smartwatch has a circularly shaped dial which apparently has a touchscreen display. The side of the watch has a rotary knob which is flanked by two buttons on either side. Perhaps the side mounted controls along with the touchscreen will be used to operate the smartwatch.

The patent reveals that the LG smartwatch will also have a camera. The patent betrays three different types of camera modules that the smartwatch will have which are as follows:

    • The first diagram displays a modular camera sensor which can slide in or out into the strap of the watch.
    • The second diagram has a clip on style camera module which can be attached to the strap of the watch.
    • The third diagram reveals a camera module that is built into the strap of the watch that can be concealed with a sliding mechanism.

The rear side of the LG smartwatch also has some kind of a sensor which will most likely be some type of health tracking sensor.

The LG patent also displays some possible uses of the camera module. The user can shoot pictures of food items which with the help of other applications will promptly display the caloric value of that food. Additionally, a smartwatch with a camera can be used to read barcodes from product labels that will ease the process of ordering products online.

  • Huawei Mate 30 May Have Penta Camera Setup

Huawei Mate 30 May Have Penta Camera Setup

Huawei launched the Mate 20 series of smartphones in the second half of 2018. The Mate 20 series includes the Mate 20, Mate 20 X and the Mate 20 Pro. Out of the trio, the Mate 20 Pro is the flagship device with superior cameras. Although all three smartphones in the Mate 20 lineup have triple rear cameras, the Mate 20 Pro has higher resolution camera sensors. A leak suggests that its successor, the Mate 30 Pro will have a Penta rear camera setup.

Penta Camera Setup On The Upcoming P30 Pro

A German website, Mobielkopen spotted a Huawei patent on the Chinese NIPA’s (National Intellectual Property Administration) website. The NIPA authority is responsible for granting patents in China. Huawei was granted a patent on 1 January 2019 that reveals the case design of an upcoming smartphone. The shape and cutout from the patent are similar to that of the Mate 20 Pro except for a taller camera cutout. The case of the Mate 20 Pro with triple rear cameras has a square-shaped camera cutout. The case with taller camera cutout perhaps belongs to the Mate 30 Pro. The elongated camera cutout indicates that the Mate 30 Pro will indeed have five rear cameras.

The right side of the case has protruding ridges for the power button and the volume rockers. The bottom of the case cutouts for USB Type-C jack and a slit for the loudspeaker grille. The top of the case has holes for the 3.5 mm audio jack and the IR blaster.  Side by side case comparison of the two device advises that the Mate 30 Pro will have a similar design as its predecessor.
