Motorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone in the year 1973. Over the years, the company has produced several exceptional devices some of which include the Moto RAZR and Moto G. A report published by the WSJ claimed that the company is developing a successor to the Moto RAZR which will have a foldable display. A fresh patent exhibits that the company is not only working on the foldable Moto RAZR but is also working on a large smartphone cum tablet with a foldable display.

    Foldable Motorola Tablet Cum Smartphone

In mid-2017, Motorola filed a patent with two different patent agencies which include USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office). The patent was published on 10 January 2019 and it discloses information about a Foldable smartphone cum tablet that the company is working on.

The patent for the foldable device from Motorola highlights several technologies that are currently unheard of.  Unlike the Samsung Galaxy F, the Motorola device in the patent folds outwards. It proposes an innovative feature to navigate through smartphones. When in the folded state, the touchscreen that faces the rear can be used to navigate menus on the front screen. In simpler words, the user can control activities on the front display with the help of touch gestures on the rear display.

The foldable Motorola smartphone cum tablet has a home button on the right side and it also has a custom UI (User Interface) for easy navigation on a tall and narrow device. In addition to navigation via the rear side display, the front camera in the top bezel tracks the head movement of the user and can be used for hands-free navigation.

Another image from the patents shows that the foldable Motorola smartphone cum tablet can be used as an alarm clock when set in a partially folded state. While it is set on a flat surface as an alarm clock, the user can continue using the other half of the screen.

However the speed camera icons are rolling out to Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, UK and US users. Redmi Note 7 Survives After Being Used As Skates And Thrown Down From Stairs

Xiaomi’s sub-brand, Redmi launched the Redmi Note 7 smartphone earlier this month in China. Due to its aggressive pricing the phone is attracting a lot of attention. A picture posted on weibo revealed a hidden feature of the Redmi Note 7. Two fresh videos shared by the company on a Chinese social media platform testify that the smartphone is not only loaded with features but it is also very durable.

Redmi Note 7 Thrown Around and Used As Skates

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2CJyLHC3Xs

In the first video, a user attaches castor wheels to the rear of the Redmi Note 7 with the help of high strength tape and then rides the makeshift skates. Surprisingly, the device not only survives this abuse, its display seems to work perfectly fine that too without any noticeable scratches.

The second video again torments the Redmi Note 7 but in a completely different manner. A unit of the Redmi Note 7  is placed in a bin which is sealed from top and then rolled down the staircase. This video is an ideal demonstration of how a smartphone would get through in an accidental staircase drop. Like the first video, the Redmi Note 7 mainly stays unharmed without any noticeable damage.

Although an actual device would seldom face such an abuse, the videos certainly reflect the build quality and durability of the Redmi Note 7.

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Might Have A Secondary Display

Samsung Galaxy S10 Might Have A Secondary Display

Samsung’s Galaxy series of phones are the most anticipated high end smartphones along with Huawei, iPhones and Oneplus phones. So it does not come as a surprise that everyone has focused their attention on the new Galaxy S10 series of phones.

According to a Dutch media source, Samsung had filed a new patent which includes the provision for a tiny second display. This isn’t the average display at the back of the phone, but a display overlay over the front camera. Most phones with punch hole cameras have to leave the lens part blackened out. The new patent wishes to put a screen on top of it. This is so that it can display relevant icons such as an animation of a heart when performing biometrics, a red outline if the camera is not ready, a green outline when it is and so on.  The transparent screen will hide various optical components which work with the help of light. These include proximity sensors, lighting sensors and the front camera. This will enable the phone to have a cleaner design and will be a much better experience for the users.

    Details

The second screen area will supposedly have a lower resolution than the main screen. The two display areas will work independently of each other. The display will also be able to show colours and the transparency of the small display will vary.

Samsung has spoken about correcting the image displayed on the second screen. This can be done using a technology they are calling ‘light path conversion device’. It is integrated as an additional display layer, in a grid pattern. The smartphone is also said to be able to detect if the area is being used for the camera or biometrics. We will have to wait and see if these new patents are in any way incorporated into new phones. Specially the the soon-to-be-launched galaxy S10 but it seems highly unlikely since many previous leaks suggest the phone to have a punch hole camera like any other phone.

  • HP Announces Rugged Laptops With Wacom Stylus Support For Students

HP Announces Rugged Laptops With Wacom Stylus Support For Students

HP has been delivering great laptops in the form of Chromebooks for quite some time now. While there are several rugged phones in the market, a rugged laptop is hardly ever heard of. But HP has done just that! They showcased two Chromebooks recently – the Chromebook x360 11 G2 and Chromebook 11 G7 Education Editions.

Both the laptops are said to have undergone MIL-STD-810G testing and feature a spill-resistant keyboard. This is a millitary grade testing and the laptops are said to be able to survive drops of up to 76cm on concrete.

    Chromebook x360 11 G2 EE

The Chromebook x360 11 G2 EE features an 11-inch IPS display with HD (1,366 x 768) resolution. It has two USB-C ports, one regular USB port, a headphone jack along with an SD card slot. The laptop’s screen has a 360-degree hinge lets you turn the device into a 3.24-pound tablet. It also supports the optional Wacom EMR pen. This is supposedly done to allow students to take notes. There are a few different options in terms of configuration and the laptop is powered by either a dual-core Celeron N4000 or quad-core N4100 with 8GB of RAM and 32/64GB of storage.

    Chromebook 11 G7 EE

The second Chromebook, albeit similar in many ways has significant differences as well. The Chromebook 11 G7 EE features the same processor options, RAM, storage option, battery size and display size. The durability rating is similar as well with the same tests having been performed on this Chromebook.

The main difference are in it’s screen. It features three different display options — an HD IPS touchscreen, a matte HD IPS non-touchscreen and an HD SVA option. The hinge on this laptop only lets you lay the display flat on a table instead of a 360 degree fold.

Both these laptops can hold up to 11.5 hours of power according to HP. The Chromebook x360 11 G2 EE and Chromebook 11 G7 EE will go on sale sometime in April, and the prices have not been revealed as of now.

Xiaomi Launches Retro- Styled Elvis Radio

It can be folded over the bottom for use as a stand for the player as well. The Xiaomi player is fitted with a 52mm large-diameter NdFeB full-range speaker which supposedly provides great sound.

  • Samsung Might Stop Producing Flagship Smartphones In India

Samsung Might Stop Producing Flagship Smartphones In India

Samsung is a leader in smartphone technology and is one of the most successful companies in the Indian market. The company has shared a piece of shocking news that claims it might stop producing flagship devices like the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 in the country.

    Reason Behind Possible Discontinuation

Samsung highlighted that India’s Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) is the main reason behind this decision. PMP aims to boost local manufacturing of components in the country which was originally planned to take effect from the month of March 2020. However, the Indian government has now decided to prepone the date of its implementation which will go into effect from February 2019. Companies that don’t produce the said components in India from next month are subjected to pay 10% duty tax on any imported components.

    Samsung Galaxy S10

This sudden change in the decided date of PMP’s implementation is now pestering Samsung as the company still imports AMOLED displays which are used on flagship devices.  According to the company, displays account for 25-30% of a smartphone’s total cost and the 10% duty implied by the Indian government can significantly increase manufacturing costs. Even though Samsung is setting up a local plant for the assembly of AMOLED panels in the county,  it won’t be operational until April 2020. Reportedly the company has notified the Indian government if such a duty is implemented, it will stop producing flagship smartphones locally. Additionally, the company will also reduce the manufacturing of midrange and budget smartphones.  Samsung Galaxy Note 9

It is still undecided whether the government will negotiate with Samsung or not and only time will tell about the future of local smartphone production by the company.

The company has announced that the Galaxy S10 lineup along with the foldable phone allegedly called the Galaxy F will be unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked 2019 event. As the smartphones are nearing their launch date, more of their features tend to surface online. The company filed a patent with EUIPO (European Intellectual Property Office) on 21 January 2019 that concerns the ‘Neuro Game Booster Technology’ on future Samsung smartphones. Apparently, the upcoming flagship smartphone from the company is the Galaxy S10 which is most likely to have this feature.

What is  Neuro Game Booster Technology?

The patent clearly mentions that this technology is mainly associated with gaming and smartphones. Additionally, it also talks about AI (Artificial Intelligence). Combining all the points from the patent suggest that Samsung is developing software that will enhance mobile gaming with the help of AI algorithms.

What is The Need Of  Neuro Game Booster Technology?

Although modern smartphones are loaded with powerful processors massive amounts of RAM, use of such software can provide an even smooth and joyful gaming experience. The technology will optimise the allocation of resources to various applications. While running heavy games it would either stop other processes or provide them with limited resources. As most of the resources would be used to run the onscreen game itself.
