The Xiaomi-backed Black Shark gaming smartphone has gained importance over the last few weeks. There were several leaks and rumours about the device which might launch in China on the 13th of April. And now, a Weibo user has posted a new real-life image of the Black Shark Smartphone. The device in the leaked has the name ‘Black Shark’, written on the back in green colour which is similar to the green-coloured branding of the Razer Phone.
The post has an alleged rear view of the Xiaomi’s Black Shark smartphone. This does not look anything like a typical smartphone at all with a rugged design. In fact, the smartphone has a Samsung Galaxy S7 Active style built quality, which is expected to be made out of plastic. Additionally, the leaked image also reveals that the smartphone has a dual rear-camera setup with an LED flash. Up, on the top of the smartphone looks like add-on accessories, which should offer Nintendo Switch like joystick experience.
Unlike most of the latest smartphones, the Black Shark will not be slim. Instead, it has a rugged shell, which might house a big battery, with at least 4000 mAh capacity. Considering the build, the smartphone is expected to have an IP68 certification with water and dust resistance. Finally, the Xiaomi’s Black Shark might challenge the likes of the Razer Phone. Finally, the smartphone looks narrower and taller, which hints that the device is likely to have a taller 18:9 aspect ratio display.

Black Sharkis a Xiaomi-backed smartphone company that has been teasing its upcoming gaming smartphone for the past few weeks. The newly released teaser from the company has a Fencing theme, which hints towards the gaming capabilities of the smartphone. The teaser also hints that the smartphone will have a metal unibody design. Having a metal body does have some advantages in a gaming smartphone, as metal is a good conductor of heat, which helps to dissipate the heat of the smartphone.
The teaser shows half a side of the Black Shark smartphone with a power button and a SIM tray. The teaser also reveals a single antenna band on the top of the smartphone. The teaser also has a sentence, which roughly translates to ‘Born to Compete’, which means the device could have flagship level specifications at an affordable price.
Black Shark Render
Xiaomi Black Shark Specs
The Black Shark is expected to have a 6 inch display with a 2160 x 1080 px resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Having a higher refresh rate display will help the gaming performance by reducing the visible lag. The display with 120Hz refresh rate comes with a lag of 8.33ms, whereas a typical smartphone display with 60Hz refresh rate has a lag of 16.67ms. Under the hood, the smartphone might be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset with 8GB RAM and 32GB storage. However, the company might also launch the Xiaomi BlackShark with either 64GB or 128GB storage.
Out of the box, the smartphone might run on Android 8.0 Oreo. However, whether it will run MIUI or some other custom skin on top is unclear. There are rumours that the Black Shark will feature one of a kind aviation class cooling system with additional tweaks to keep the device cool at all the time. The smartphone scores an impressive 270680 points on Antutu benchmark leak. In fact, it is more than that of the Galaxy S9’s 265267 points.
Xiaomi was earlier expected to launch the Mi 7 at an event during the Mobile World Congress 2018. The delay in the launch of the Mi 7 was initially attributed to just the timing of the Mi MIX 2s launch. However, it now appears that the company delayed the launch to incorporate within the Mi 7 new biometric technology. Xiaomi CEO has confirmed via an online post that the MI 7 will indeed have an in-screen fingerprint sensor.
Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun commented on a Weibo post confirming the feature. The exchange happened on a post containing official Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s disassembly photos. In the image, it appears that a user jokingly mentions that the Mi 7 will have an in-screen fingerprint sensor. Lei Jun then replied to that comment confirming the presence of an in-screen fingerprint sensor.
In-display Sensor demo
It is worth noting that the nature of the exchange is not serious and the following comment sort of dismisses the claim. However, there has been a lot of chatter of the Xiaomi Mi 7 sporting the Clear ID technology. If so, the Mi 7 is confirmed to also have an OLED display which is required to embed this type of fingerprint sensor.
The fingerprint sensor sits between the mainboard and the OLED panel where the OLED panel illuminates the finger and then processes the fingerprint scan. Hence, this technology will not work on an LCD panel, at least for now. Synaptics claims that it has a failure rate of 1 in 50,000. So far, the consensus on the use of Clear ID tech has been positive. However, many have pointed out that it is still much slower than traditional fingerprint sensors. With Xiaomi taking its time to launch the Mi 7, we expect the phone will launch with a more refined version of this Clear ID tech.
Thomson has sent out an invitation for the launch of a new TV in India on the 12th of April. The company might partner with either Amazon or Flipkart to sell these smart televisions. Thomson has a history of 120 years in television making. In fact, the company sold a record number of televisions in India in the 90s. Though the company has enjoyed success in the Indian market in the past, companies like Xiaomi and its Mi TV 4 have now set the benchmark for affordable smart TVs in India.
The company has a comprehensive series of smart televisions in Europe. The company currently sells A3, A4, A5, A6, B3, B6 and C64 series of smart televisions in Europe with a starting price of 195 Euros. As of now, there is no information about the products that might launch in India. Considering the market competition, the company is most likely to launch a couple of 4K smart televisions. Whether these will be affordable or premium priced TVs, we don’t know yet.
Xiaomi recently launched the Xiaomi Mi TV 4 with 4K HDR display in India for a price of Rs 39,999. Additionally, the company also launched the Xiaomi Mi TV 4A 32 inch and 53 inch for a price of Rs 13,999 and Rs 22,999 respectively. These smart televisions have disrupted the television market, by offering such features at a very affordable price. Similarly, Vu has also launched three new 4K LED television in India exclusively on Flipkart. The Vu televisions run on stock Android TV UI.
Though Xiaomi Mi TV 4 offers great value for money. However, they are doomed by their own flash sale strategy, where it is very difficult to buy them. If Thomson can launch a smart television at a competitive pricing, the company can start off its second innings like a pro.
Xiaomi has launched a new service on it’s ongoing Mi Fan Festival 2018 called the Mi Crowdfunding. This is a similar platform to Kickstarter, where a set of users has to back a product. After reaching the required number (in this case 1000), the product will be shipped in the next 10 days.
These products are already available in China. For Xiaomi this could be a great platform to test the popularity of accessories, which will assist the company in actual launch of the product. So, some of these products might officially launch in India, after the funding period.
As of now, the company has announced two accessories. A Bluetooth receiver and a Tripod selfie Stick. These devices are available in 1000 numbers and one has to pay the amount upfront to back the product. The prices of these devices will be less than the usual price tag.
Xiaomi Mi Bluetooth Audio Receiver retails for Rs 999. It is based on Bluetooth 4.2 technology, which converts wired earphones and headphones into wireless headphones. Additionally, the device has a single button and just weights 10 grams. Xiaomi claims that it can play music up to 4-5 hours on a single charge and it can also convert your analogue Car music system into a wireless music system.
The Xiaomi Tripod Selfie retails at Rs 1,099. It is a nifty accessory for vloggers and selfie enthusiasts. The Tripod has a built-in Bluetooth support, which can control the camera of the connected smartphone. This supports a variety of Android and iOS devices. In fact, the accessory can fit in the Xiaomi Mi 5 or the bigger Xiaomi Mi MAX 2 without breaking a sweat.
Considering this as a new platform, we can expect to see more products in the future. However, the page isn’t clear about some of the facts like, what happens if a product doesn’t get funded 100% and the warranty claims.
Xiaomi-backed Black Shark officially launchd in China. The gamma smartphone has an enhanced CPU cooling system and a dedicated Shark key for enabling immersive gaming experience. It is powered by the latest Snapdragon 845 chips and has up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. As is with a lot of Xiaomi smartphones, the Black Shark is expected to be a China-Exclusive smartphone as of now.
When Google launched the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, it talked a lot about the tight integration of Google Assistant within the OS. Many believed that AI and machine learning would be the next big trend in the smartphone industry. However, that doesn’t seem to hold up so far in 2018. The iPhone X notch has taken over the smartphone industry in the first few months of 2018. However, Xiaomi has strayed away from the herd so far. It launched the Mi MIX 2s without a notch and has now introduced its own virtual assistant, Xiao Ai.
Now, there is a huge chance that Xiao AI will never make its way to India. But, recent launch activity by Xiaomi India suggests the company has identified the great potential Indian market possesses. So, it is not completely ludicrous to expect an India-friendly version of Xiao Ai making its debut with the Mi MIX 2s. Then again, don’t hold your breath for the launch of the Mi MIX 2s in India.
Xiaomi has released a video showcasing the skills of its new AI assistant, Xiao Ai. The video is mostly in Chinese but, there are English subtitles and we couldn’t help but notice similarities with Google Assistant. In the video, colourful bars pop up when the assistant is listening, similar to the Google Assistant. Also, it shows that Xiao Ai can set reminders, control smart lights, tell the weather and other tasks that Google Assistant and the likes of Alexa, Siri can do as well.
However, it is worth noting that Xiao Ai is programmed based on the Chinese language. This means that, in China, at least, this will be the most productive virtual assistant. This bodes well for the company’s other smart home offerings as well.
According to a latest Weibo post, Black Shark, the subsidiary smartphone brand of Xiaomi is all set to launch its first gaming smartphone on April 13th. In February and March of 2018, there were many leaks and rumours about the Xiaomi Black Shark. The latest teaser image officially confirms the launch date of the new device. However, the company has not used the word Xiaomi anywhere on its teaser image.
Xiaomi BlackShark is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, which also powers the recently launched the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s. However, unlike the Mi MIX 2s, the Black Shark is expected to have a sturdier design with a metal unibody design, which will help the smartphone to dissipate the heat. The smartphone is most likely to be a China exclusive model, which is expected to retail at ~US$ 500.
Xiaomi Black Shark Specs
The Xiaomi BlackShark is expected to have a 6 inch display with 2160 x 1080p resolution. Under the hood, the smartphone will be powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset with 8 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. However, the company is expected to Xiaomi BlackShark with either 64GB or 128GB storage.
Mi MIX 2s
The BlackShark might offer a full metal unibody design with dual stereo speakers at the bottom. Out of the box, the smartphone will run on Android 8.0 Oreo. However, it might feature either MIUI or stock Android. As this is a gaming smartphone, it comes with one of a kind aviation class cooling system with additional tweaks. The smartphone scores an impressive 270680 points on Antutu, in fact, it is more than that of the Galaxy S9’s 265267 points.
Last year Xiaomi launched its first ever stock Android running device, the Xiaomi Mi A1. According to a series of leaks, the company might soon launch the Xiaomi Mi A2. Initially, the smartphone will be launched in China as the Xiaomi Mi 6X and the same will be relaunched globally as the Mi A2 with stock Android. The Xiaomi Mi 5X was launched in June of 2017, and the company might follow the same pattern for the Mi 6X as well. However, considering the listing on TENAA, the device could launch sooner than expected.
Previous leaks and rumours about the Mi A2 were about the design and the display of the phone. This leak sheds light on the remaining specifications of the Xiaomi Mi A2. The smartphone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 Octa-core chipset. The Mi A1 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, and the 626 looks like an incremental upgrade. In fact, except for a minor clock speed upgrade, these chipsets have the same features and capabilities.
Xiaomi Mi A2 Specs
The Xiaomi Mi A2 has a 5.99 inch IPS LCD 2160 x 1080 px display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the device has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 Octa-core with 2.2 GHz clock speed. Additionally, the device has 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage which will be expandable via a microSD card.
The device has a dual-camera setup, consisting of a 20MP and an 8MP sensor with an f/2.0 and f/18 aperture, respectively. For the front-facing camera, the phone uses a 20MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, similar to the one found on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. Additionally, the front-facing camera is likely to support Face Unlock.
The phone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. In China, the smartphone is expected to run on MIUI 9 and for the rest of the world, the device is likely to run on stock Android OS. Lastly, the phone has a 2910 mAh battery. This is a slight downgrade over the 3080 mAh battery found on the Xiaomi Mi A1.
Xiaomi recently launched the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s, which is the first 2018 flagship smartphone from the company. Lately, the company has been launching smartphones powered by a Snapdragon chipset. However, according to a report, the company is all set to launch a smartphone in Q2 of 2018 powered by the Helio P60 chipset. The MediaTek Helio P60 chipset was launched at MWC 2018.
Companies like Oppo, Vivo, and Meizu have already launched smartphones with this chipset and Xiaomi is the next phone-maker to join the club Helio P60. However, considering the patent infringements, the Xiaomi smartphone based on this chipset is most unlikely to launch in India.
MediaTek Helio P60 Specs
The chipset uses 12 nm FinFET technology based on big.LITTLE architecture. The four high-performance cores are based on ARM Cortex-A73 cores and the other four efficient cores are based on ARM Cortex-A53 cores. Compared to the Helio P30 chipset, the Helio P60 offers up to 70% improved CPU performance.
The chiset has a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. The chipset offers a staggering 70% boost in overall GPU performance compared to its predecessor. In fact, the performance will be similar to Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset. The dedicated NeuroPilot can handle native AI tasks using Android Neural Networks API with class-leading performance. The three image sensing processors support dual camera module. In fact, this uses 16% less power by combining Ai accelerators with the real-time image enhancement.
The MediaTek Helio P60 chipset supports displays with up to 1080p resolution. In fact, the smartphone manufacturers can go with a display with up to 20:9 aspect ratio. In terms of storage and RAM, the chipset can handle up to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM. The chipset can handle UFS 2.1 storage. Finally, coming to the connectivity the processor can handle dual LTE and VoLte network with Cat 7 download speeds and Cat 13 upload speeds.
Wearables, unlike smartphones, are not a necessity in our lives. However, the wearable tech has come a long way in the recent past with smartwatches and fitness bands being the most common of the lot. While smartwatches mean a lot of monetary investment, same is not the case for fitness bands. Let’s take a look at the top fitness bands in India at under Rs 2000!
The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 is one of the best looking fitness band available in India. The band retails for Rs 1,799 and available on Amazon and Mi.com. The band comes with a monochrome OLED display with an impressive 20 days battery life. However, the actual battery life depends on the type of usage. Additionally, the device comes in multiple colour strap bands, which are using Anti-sweat Thermoplastic Elastomers. The can measure your steps, track your calories intake, and can even measure your heart rate using a built-in sensor. Additionally, the band has a one key navigation system, which can be used to navigate throughout the band interface.
Fastrack is a fashion brand, which makes accessories for the youth. The Fastrack Reflex Smartwatch Band is priced at Rs 1,830 and available on Amazon and other authorised retails stores. Similarly, the smart band comes with a mono colour always on OLED display, which can display different information like Time, Steps Count, and distance traveled. However, Unlike Mi Band 2, this misses out on a heart rate sensor. The main unit has a USB type-A port, which is used to charge the device using a USB port.
This is the cheapest smart fitness band in our listing. The band is priced at Rs 1,299 and exclusively available on Amazon. The band comes in a fancy dual tone design with an one-touch button design. Additionally, the watch is water and dust resistant with the IP67 rating. It has a tiny 0.42-inch OLED panel with a dynamic heart rate scanner. A user can analyse the complete health data through an iOS or Android smartphones. However, it is on a heavier side compared to other two bands.
Xiaomi is expected to launch the Mi MIX 2s in India soon, after the launch in China. However, that won’t be the only flagship smartphone the company will launch in 2018. For weeks, it was expected that Xiaomi will launch the Mi 7 at Mobile World Congress 2018, however, that did not happen. Since then, we have seen a few renders and leaks of the upcoming flagship device.
And now, a new report from XDA Developers claims that the Xiaomi Mi 7 will have an in-screen fingerprint sensor and a notch, similar to the Vivo X21 UD.
Unlike most leaks, which happens via manufacturer or a case maker, these leaks have been achieved by decrypting the firmware file of the smartphone. In fact, these features were expected to debut with the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s. However, due to optimisation issues, these features were postponed to the Mi 7.
The MIUI source code confirms that the Xiaomi Mi 7 comes with a code name ‘dipper old’. As the company has used the code name ‘dipper’ in earlier models, its safe to assume, that the leaked device is the Mi 7. In the build.prop file there is a line called ‘goodfix_fod’. Goodfix is one of the companies that can manufacture in-screen fingerprint sensor and ‘fod’ translates to a ‘fingerprint on display’. To incorporate an in-screen fingerprint sensor, the smartphone has to have an OLED display. This means the Xiaomi Mi 7 will be the second flagship smartphone from the company to use an OLED display (Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is the first model).
Xiaomi Mi 7 Specs
The Xiaomi Mi 7 will have an OLED display with a notch on the top. Considering similar smartphones, the smartphone is likely to have a 19:9 aspect ratio screen with FHD+ resolution. Under the hood, the device will have the Snapdragon 845 Octa-core chipset with at least 6GB RAM and 64GB storage.
The leak does not cover the camera specifications of the smartphone. However, it does mention that the device will have a 4000 mAh battery. Considering the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s, the device is likely to support wireless charging.
27th of March was one of the busiest days in the smartphone industry. Huawei and Xiaomi launched their flagship smartphones and Apple launched its most affordable iPad. Huawei in total launched three new smartphones. The P20, P20 Pro and the Mate RS Porsche Design. Similarly, Xiaomi launched its flagship Mi MIX 2s. These devices have top of the line specifications with premium build quality. The Huawei P20 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s are those devices, which offers the best camera, best design and best hardware without a premium price tag. However, the 899 Euros price tag of the P20 Pro is much more than the 3299 Yuan (423 Euros) price of the Mi MIX 2s.
The display is one of the most important parts of a smartphone. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s has a 5.99 inch IPS LCD screen with FHD+ 2160 x 1080 px resolution. Similarly, the Huawei P20 Pro has a 6.1 inch 2244 x 1080 px OLED display. The OLED display always has an advantage over an IPS LCD display in colour reproduction and offers higher contrast ratio. However, an OLED display is also known for the infamous pixel burn issue, which degrades the quality of the display.
Huawei P20 Pro with a notch
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with 6/8GB RAM, which will feature in most of the Android flagship smartphones of 2018. The chipset scores record-breaking benchmark scores and offers a great set of features with latest LTE standards and Bluetooth 5.0. On the other hand, the Huawei P20 Pro has a HiSilicon Kirin 970 Octa-core chipset with 6GB RAM. This is an in-house chipset from Huawei with a dedicated neural engine. When it comes to day to day usage, these chipsets will perform like a pro. However, some of the games might work better on a Qualcomm chipset powered Mi MIX 2s due to better optimisation.
The camera is one more department where these smartphones will excel. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s has a dual primary camera setup with a 12MP wide-angle and a 12MP telephoto lens. This camera has AI capabilities with features like bokeh mode, 4K video recording capability. The Huawei P20 Pro has a triple camera setup with a 40MP RGB, 20MP monochrome and an 8MP depth sensor. The smartphone offers 3x optical zoom, 4K video recording and super slow motion 960fps video recording. Due to larger pixel size, the smartphone can capture high-quality photos even in low lighting condition.
