Gmail Adds Useful Shortcuts, Allows Message Downloading

Gmail is one of the most widely used email services in the world. Being that as it may, it constantly keeps evolving and changing to make the user experience better and more convenient. An enterprise UI needs to be simple, efficient and easy to use. Gmail, in its bid to simplify life for people who regularly use the service, has introduced a host of new features and shortcuts.

One of the best features in the new update are the Undo and Redo shortcuts. These are specially great for people who like using their mouse to undo or redo words or sentences. The Undo button restores the previously typed text while the Redo button will reverse the changes. The buttons are added to the taskbar, preceding the font type and font size options. When you open the compose window it should appear right in the front of the taskbar. The positioning of the buttons are convenient and easily visible. These two commands are very frequently used by most people when composing an email.

Another great feature added to the taskbar is the option for Strikethrough. This allows a user to mark something as completed. It can also be helpful when suggesting edits in a text. The strikethrough button can also be found in the taskbar itself.

A great feature, that Gmail has recently introduced and was much anticipated by people is the ability to download messages in the EML format. This feature allows one to view the Gmail content along with attachments within different email clients. Users will have the ability to add these downloaded messages as attachments in other emails.

The features are slowly being rolled out for Gmail and GSuit users. It will automatically be added to your Gmail UI soon. The rolling out of these features has started from January 22 and should be available globally in a few more days. These changes however are for the web clients and there is no news of these coming to the App clients anytime soon yet.

  • SpaceX’s Test Rocket Topples Over In The Wind

SpaceX’s Test Rocket Topples Over In The Wind

SpaceX has been working on their BFR rocket for quite some time now. The company was getting ready to perform a test rocket launch soon from their facility in Boca Chica, Texas. Starship, formerly known as BFR, is Elon Musk’s dream to carry people and cargo into the orbit. It may even travel to the Moon, Mars and beyond at some point in the future. But, for now, it seems that the Texas wind is taking a toll on the rocket.

Photos suggest that the test rocket that was being prepared for a launch test has toppled over in the strong 50 miles per hour wind. According to Elon Musk, the mishap will take a few weeks to repair. According to Musk, the rocket was being prepared for a test launch in a few week’s time but the strong winds broke the Starship’s Mooring Blocks. These mooring blocks are responsible in keeping the rocket secured to the ground. This reportedly caused the Starship’s upper fairing to topple over.

The rocket is being made from stainless steel. Elon Musk says that 310S stainless is better for the high temperature outer skin, as it can bear  approximately 1450 Kelvin heat, so active cooling with cryogenic fuel only has to mitigate 300 degrees of delta temperature. The stainless steel fairing on the top seemed to have been damaged by the fall. Elon also reported that the bottom part of the rocket that houses the propellant tanks are fine.

SpaceX wishes to do hop tests with this rocket. The speciality of the rocket is its reusability which according to the company will make space travel economical and accessible. The hop tests involve igniting the vehicle’s engines and sending the rocket to low altitudes and getting them back to Earth upright. The final design of the rocket however, will differ from the test rocket that has toppled over. The Raptor engines of the rocket are said to be going through a radical redesign. The test vehicle is slightly shorter than the Starship’s final design. The Starship will also boast of seven engines while the test vehicle has only three.

Development and manufacturing of the Starship will reportedly be done from Hawthorne, California but the company is planning to shift some of it’s Starship prototype production to Boca Chica, Texas. The reason for that, given by Musk, is that the prototypes were too big to move across the country easily.

The video demonstrates a portable electronic device that has a large screen with minimal bezels on either side.

The company executive can be seen navigating through applications on the touch screen of the device that looks quite responsive. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy F, the screen on the Xiaomi device folds backwards from both the left and right sides. The device when in its folded state looks handy and easily pocketable.

  • Meizu Launches Port-Less And Button-Less Smartphone

Meizu Launches Port-Less And Button-Less Smartphone

Chinese companies are continuously developing innovative products and pushing the boundaries. Meizu, a less known Chinese corporation has launched the Meizu Zero smartphone that lacks any physical buttons, ports.

    Meizu Zero Looks and Features

The front of the Meizu Zero accommodates a 5.99-inch AMOLED display that tapers towards the sides. The display panel has a resolution of 2340 x 1080 px and a pixel density of 430 ppi. The device has thin left and right bezels while the top and bottom bezels are comparatively thicker. The top bezel of the handset makes room for a 20 MP selfie camera that can also capture 1080p videos at 30fps.

The Meizu Zero also has an under display fingerprint sensor that allows for quickly and securely unlocking it. Apparently, there are no physical buttons on the sides of the handset. The company has kitted it with pressure sensitive buttons which can be used to control various operations like locking/unlocking the device and controlling the volume. Talking about sound, the Meizu Zero does not have any speaker grille as it does not require one. The smartphone has a piezoelectric sensor which can radiate sound from the surface of the display.

The rear panel of the Meizu Zero is made out of ceramic and it houses dual 20 MP + 12 MP camera sensors and a ring-shaped LED flash. The smartphone features the Snapdragon 845 SoC and runs on the latest Android 9.0 Pie.  The Snapdragon 845 chipset consists of an Octa-Core CPU along with Adreno 630 GPU. In terms of memory and storage, it is available in configurations which are as follows:

    • 4 GB + 64 GB
    • 6 GB + 128 GB

Motorola Is Also Working On A Foldable Smartphone Cum Tablet

Motorola was the first company to produce a handheld mobile phone in the year 1973. Over the years, the company has produced several exceptional devices some of which include the Moto RAZR and Moto G. A report published by the WSJ claimed that the company is developing a successor to the Moto RAZR which will have a foldable display. A fresh patent exhibits that the company is not only working on the foldable Moto RAZR but is also working on a large smartphone cum tablet with a foldable display.

    Foldable Motorola Tablet Cum Smartphone

In mid-2017, Motorola filed a patent with two different patent agencies which include USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office). The patent was published on 10 January 2019 and it discloses information about a Foldable smartphone cum tablet that the company is working on.

The patent for the foldable device from Motorola highlights several technologies that are currently unheard of.  Unlike the Samsung Galaxy F, the Motorola device in the patent folds outwards. It proposes an innovative feature to navigate through smartphones. When in the folded state, the touchscreen that faces the rear can be used to navigate menus on the front screen. In simpler words, the user can control activities on the front display with the help of touch gestures on the rear display.

The foldable Motorola smartphone cum tablet has a home button on the right side and it also has a custom UI (User Interface) for easy navigation on a tall and narrow device. In addition to navigation via the rear side display, the front camera in the top bezel tracks the head movement of the user and can be used for hands-free navigation.

Another image from the patents shows that the foldable Motorola smartphone cum tablet can be used as an alarm clock when set in a partially folded state. While it is set on a flat surface as an alarm clock, the user can continue using the other half of the screen.

  • Google Maps To Display Speed Limits

Google Maps To Display Speed Limits

Google Maps has been constantly evolving and growing the features that it has. Very recently, they added support for Autorickshaws in India. Now, news suggests that they will add speed limits in their iOS and Android Apps.

The new feature adds a badge at the bottom left of the screen while the map is open and shows the speed limit of that particular road. It also displays speed traps. Speed traps are cameras installed in various roads to catch over-speeding drivers. These traps are shows with a small camera icon at the various locations the traps are based out of.

    via-Android Police

Drivers will also reportedly get an audio notification when they’re approaching a speed trap. The speed limit update is supposedly rolling out in Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States. However the speed camera icons are rolling out to Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, UK and US users. According to a report, the speed limit feature was available in San Francisco Bay Area and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for almost a year now. Since last year, in many areas, users can report a speed trap whenever they face or spot one. This is a welcome feature for people who have cars without smart displays. Those relying on their phones for navigation can use this feature to not over- speed in low speed zones.

  • WhatsApp Adds New Feature To Control Spam Messages

WhatsApp Adds New Feature To Control Spam Messages

WhatsApp Messenger is a freeware, cross-platform messaging application that was started in the year 2009. In comparison to its initial release, the company has added several features and functionalities to the application. Except for text messaging it also provides services like Voice over IP (VoIP), media sharing and video calling. Due to its free price and ease of usage, it has become a huge hit amongst consumers across the globe.

One issue that the company has tried to tackle for a long period of time is the propagation of fake news via the platform. In the month of July, last year WhatsApp launched a test to limit the forwarding of messages worldwide. The company specifically mentioned that its Indian users forward more messages and photos than users from any other country. The company tested a lower limit that restricts users to send messages to only five contacts at once.  Also, it removed the quick forward button next to media messages. According to the company, this step was taken to further improve the safety and privacy of its users. One example that helped to curb fake new is as follows:

    Labelling Forwarded Messages

The new update of WhatsApp adds a crucial feature to restrain the diffusion of sham messages via the messaging application. After the update, WhatsApp will show which messages a user receives have been forwarded to them. Such a message will carry a small arrow along with the forwarded tag. This will allow the receiver to know whether that particular message was actually written by the sender or it was forwarded information.

  • What Spotify Entering Indian Market Might Mean For Prime Music And Apple Music

What Spotify Entering Indian Market Might Mean For Prime Music And Apple Music

Swedish online music streaming service Spotify might launch it’s services in India soon. There is already quite a competition brewing between other music streaming services, with Prime music and Apple music being paid services. Saavn, Gaana Google and other companies also have free streaming that many Indians use, apart from using Youtube for their music needs. Spotify is already a couple of years late in entering the market. Recent news suggests that they plan to establish themselves and launch before the end of this month.

The company has already partnered with T series. T series is India’s largest music label and movie studio. Fans of T series have been in loggerheads to gain the most number of subscribers on Youtube with popular Youtuber Pewdiepie. This partnership will allow Spotify to gain access to T-Series’ catalogue of Bollywood and regional songs. The company is believed to be launching with a catalogue of five languages with more than 160,000 tracks across various genres.

    What Others Offer

Apple Music currently provides three months of free trial before one has to subscribe in India. The subscription charges are Rs 60/month for students, Rs 120/month for individuals and Rs 190/month for families. Amazon’s Prime Music on the other hand is available for free for all Amazon Prime users which costs 129 per month or Rs 999 per year. Prime membership also adds certain other benefits such as Prime Videos, free delivery for orders from Amazon and so on. On the other hand, JioSaavn PRO is offered for Rs 99 per month. In a highly competitive market such as this, Spotify needs to up the game if it is to survive and thrive. Being a price sensitive market, the membership fees will be the deciding factor for subscribers.

Till last year Spotify claimed to have the presence in 78 markets across the world. The company also has over 250 partners across televisions, cars, laptops and speakers among others. One of India’s biggest music streaming service, Saavn was recently acquired by telecom behemoth Reliance Industries Limited. Spotify can play to their strengths and look at acquisition of Indian music streaming services as well. This will not only reduce establishment costs but also reduce competition. However, in a stock exchange filing, Spotify reported that it had a dedicated office space in India, with 308 employees. This means that the company is going to have a go at the music streaming business in India very soon. It will be interesting to see how it pans out and how Indians receive the new streaming service option.

Redmi Note 7 Survives After Being Used As Skates And Thrown Down From Stairs

Xiaomi’s sub-brand, Redmi launched the Redmi Note 7 smartphone earlier this month in China. Due to its aggressive pricing the phone is attracting a lot of attention. A picture posted on weibo revealed a hidden feature of the Redmi Note 7. Two fresh videos shared by the company on a Chinese social media platform testify that the smartphone is not only loaded with features but it is also very durable.

Redmi Note 7 Thrown Around and Used As Skates

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2CJyLHC3Xs

In the first video, a user attaches castor wheels to the rear of the Redmi Note 7 with the help of high strength tape and then rides the makeshift skates. Surprisingly, the device not only survives this abuse, its display seems to work perfectly fine that too without any noticeable scratches.

The second video again torments the Redmi Note 7 but in a completely different manner. A unit of the Redmi Note 7  is placed in a bin which is sealed from top and then rolled down the staircase. This video is an ideal demonstration of how a smartphone would get through in an accidental staircase drop. Like the first video, the Redmi Note 7 mainly stays unharmed without any noticeable damage.

Although an actual device would seldom face such an abuse, the videos certainly reflect the build quality and durability of the Redmi Note 7.

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Might Have A Secondary Display

Samsung Galaxy S10 Might Have A Secondary Display

Samsung’s Galaxy series of phones are the most anticipated high end smartphones along with Huawei, iPhones and Oneplus phones. So it does not come as a surprise that everyone has focused their attention on the new Galaxy S10 series of phones.

According to a Dutch media source, Samsung had filed a new patent which includes the provision for a tiny second display. This isn’t the average display at the back of the phone, but a display overlay over the front camera. Most phones with punch hole cameras have to leave the lens part blackened out. The new patent wishes to put a screen on top of it. This is so that it can display relevant icons such as an animation of a heart when performing biometrics, a red outline if the camera is not ready, a green outline when it is and so on.  The transparent screen will hide various optical components which work with the help of light. These include proximity sensors, lighting sensors and the front camera. This will enable the phone to have a cleaner design and will be a much better experience for the users.

    Details

The second screen area will supposedly have a lower resolution than the main screen. The two display areas will work independently of each other. The display will also be able to show colours and the transparency of the small display will vary.

Samsung has spoken about correcting the image displayed on the second screen. This can be done using a technology they are calling ‘light path conversion device’. It is integrated as an additional display layer, in a grid pattern. The smartphone is also said to be able to detect if the area is being used for the camera or biometrics. We will have to wait and see if these new patents are in any way incorporated into new phones. Specially the the soon-to-be-launched galaxy S10 but it seems highly unlikely since many previous leaks suggest the phone to have a punch hole camera like any other phone.

  • Fresh 2019 Moto RAZR Patents Reveal Its Foldable Display Design

Fresh 2019 Moto RAZR Patents Reveal Its Foldable Display Design

Motorola, now owned by Lenovo launched the Moto RAZR flip phone over a decade ago. During its four-year run, the device was extremely popular and raked in a lot of sales for the company. A patent filed to World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) indicates that Lenovo might soon launch a modern Moto RAZR smartphone with a foldable display.

    How It All Started

Motorola first launched the Moto RAZR V3 clamshell style phone in July 2004. Due to a striking design and slim profile, the phone was initially marketed as a fashion statement. Later Motorola dropped the price of the handset and its popularity spread like a wildfire. Motorola claims to have sold over 130 million units of the clamshell style, Moto RAZR.

Leaked Patent & Expectations From the Upcoming Moto RAZR

The leaked patent exhibits a clamshell style device that unfolds into a tall and narrow smartphone. Unlike the Galaxy F or Huawei’s leaked foldable phone, Motorola seems to have a completely different approach towards a foldable device. The leaked patent exhibits that Motorola is not trying to pack a large tablet size screen on a smartphone, in fact, the company wants to further shrink the smartphone and make it more portable.

The Moro RAZR in the leaked patent draws a lot of inspiration from its ancestor. Like the original device, it also has a smaller sized screen on the outside while the main screen is concealed by the clamshell style flip. Ever since the initial days of the smartphone, companies have mostly tried to bump up the screen size on them which in turn has resulted in a larger footprint. Although modern smartphones have negligible bezels that help in reducing their footprint, a rigid smartphone cannot accommodate a large screen in a compact form factor.

Therefore, the upcoming Moto RAZR with a foldable display would surely be an interesting device. Motorola is also expected to develop a UI that would allow for easy operability of a smartphone with this type of form factor. Even though there is no information available about the number of batteries on the upcoming foldable Moto RAZR. The company can kit it with dual batteries to maintain a thin profile like the Galaxy F which is reported to have dual batteries.
