  • What’s New In Wear OS Android P Developers Preview

What’s New In Wear OS Android P Developers Preview

Google recently released the first beta build of Android P for the Pixel smartphones. Similarly, the company has now released an Android P  Wear OS developer preview for the Huawei Watch 2, as there is no official Google smartwatch. Here are the top five features from the latest Android P beta preview for Wear OS.

    Dark Theme

This is one of the features, that was long due. As most of the smartwatches have an OLED display, a dedicated dark theme will increase the battery life of the device. This feature will also increase the visibility of the content in low light conditions, without straining user’s eyes.

    Limited Background Activity

As smartwatches come with a smaller battery, running multiple applications in the background can drain up the juice quickly. With this feature, no application will run on background, except for watch face and settings. Additionally, the watch can run multiple applications in the background when it is charging.

    Wear OS

Turn off radios when off body

Most of the smartwatches are capable of connecting to a smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. In fact, some of the high-end watches do support LTE for standalone functionality. Being connected to an external network will consume a lot of power. With this update, the watch will get disconnected from a network as soon as the user removes the watch from his wrist.

Wi-Fi will be off when Bluetooth is off

If the watch is not connected to a smartphone using Bluetooth, then it cannot connect to a wireless Wi-Fi network. However, the device can connect to a Wi-Fi network while charging, without being connected to a smartphone. This means, most of the software updates happen, when the watch is charging or when it connected to a charging station.

    Restriction to non-SDK methods

This feature is applicable for Wear OS app developers. Starting with the Android P based Wear OS, the app developers have to use official SDK to create newer apps. This will help optimise and increase the compatibility across the smartwatches running on Wear OS.

  • OnePlus CEO Confirms The Presence Of A Notch On The OnePlus 6

OnePlus CEO Confirms The Presence Of A Notch On The OnePlus 6

The OnePlus 6 is the next big smartphone launch that we are all waiting for. Considering the company’s portfolio, the OnePlus 6 will have top of the line specifications with an industry-inspired design. So, the device will have a glass back, 19:9 aspect ratio display, and a notch. As a recent leak confirmed that, the phone will have a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Recently, there has been a collective outcry over the increasing trend of copying the iPhone X. Hence, OnePlus reached out to The Verge to clarify a few things. Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus told The Verge that the OnePlus 6 will indeed have a display notch. However, it has a purpose, which is not similar to the iPhone X’s notch.

Another criticism of Android smartphone makers has been the presence of a chin, despite keeping a notch. Carl Pei explained that the only reason the iPhone X doesn’t have a chin is that it has a curved display. At the bottom of each display is a ribbon for connecting it to the device’s logic board, which means a thin chin becomes necessary. Apple decided to curb that with a flexible OLED, which, even though is a great solution, it is also an expensive one.

    OnePlus 6
    OnePlus 6 Leaked Image

Another interesting piece of information shared by Carl was about the design of the smartphone. Apparently, it won’t look similar to the new OPPO phone, which is great. The OnePlus 6 will launch sooner than its expected June date and will have a 90% screen-to-body ratio.

    OnePlus 6 Specs

The OnePlus 6 will have a 6.28 inch Optic OLED display with 2280 x 1080 px resolution.  The notch will house the earpiece, front camera, and other sensors. However, we cannot rule out the possibility of a much more advanced facial recognition technology which will require extra sensors. In such a case, not a lot of people should have an issue with the notch. Considering OnePlus’s previous devices, the OnePlus 6 will have Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection on both the sides.

Carl Pei tweeted this after The Verge published their story. However, that did not bode well with many OnePlus fans and he, later on, deleted the tweet. It appears that not everyone is ready to love the notch yet.

Under the hood, the device will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa-core chipset with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Going by the previous leak, there might be a model with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage as well. Additionally, there will be no support for SD card.

    OnePlus 6

The device will have a dual camera setup with a 16MP sensor and a 20MP low light sensor with an f/1.7 aperture on both lenses. For the front-facing camera, the device will have a 20MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture with support for Face Unlock.

The OnePlus 6 will run on Android 8.1 Oreo with custom OxygenOS on top. The device might also support gesture-based navigation similar to the iPhone X. Finally, the smartphone will have a 3450 mAh Li-ion battery with Dash Charging and possibly, wireless charging capabilities as well.

  • Moto Z3 Play Design Leaked By Case Renders

Moto Z3 Play Design Leaked By Case Renders

Lately, we have seen many leaks and rumours about the Moto G6 and E5 series of smartphones. These devices have a glass unibody design with a dual rear-camera setup. And now, the Moto Z3 design has leaked via case renders. Additionally, the wallpaper has a date  ‘June 8’ mentioned on the lock screen, which could be the actual launch date of the device.

The Moto Z3 Play looks almost similar to the Moto X4, and Moto G6 lineup. The smartphone has a glass back panel with a dual camera setup. Additionally, as this is a Z series smartphone, the phone has an option for connector pins for Moto MODs.

    Moto Z3 Play
    Moto Z2 Play

On the front, the smartphone has a narrow bezel display with 18:9 aspect ratio. However, unlike other flagship smartphones, Moto has incorporated a notch in its design, and maybe it is coming in 2019.

Considering the Moto Z2 Play specifications, the Moto Z3 Play is likely to have a 6 inch FHD+ IPS LCD display with 2160 x 1080 px resolution screen. Under the hood, the smartphone is likely to be powered by Qualcomm 630/660 chipset with 4GB RAM and 32/64GB internal storage. Additionally, we are most likely to see a micro SD slot for storage expansion.

The camera department is a tricky one, as Motorola has previously used RGB + Mono, RGB + Aide angle. Considering this as a mini-flagship smartphone, the device is likely to have an RGB + Wide angle or RGB + Telephoto. The device will run on Android 8 Oreo with at least 3000 mAh battery.

  • Apple iPhone X (Product) RED Looks Stunning And Could Launch Soon

Apple iPhone X (Product) RED Looks Stunning And Could Launch Soon

Apple launched the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (Product) RED variants in March 2017. This meant that many expected an iPhone X (Product) RED launch at the Apple Keynote on March 27th. However, that did not happen and instead, it launched 9.7 inch iPad. But, it is still possible for Apple to launch a red-coloured iPhone X and a new render imagines what it might look like.

Steve H, a renowned leaker tweeted that an unfamiliar source says Apple will launch the iPhone X (Product) RED. He has, however, conceded that it is not certain. The uncertainties aside, the renders of the iPhone X look stunning and it could be a great addition to the iPhone X lineup. Apple’s WWDC 2018 conference will commence in June, and will mostly concentrate on the software side of Apple.

Again, Apple did not launch the iPhone 7 (Product) RED at a separate event. This means that a launch of the iPhone X (Product) RED could happen anytime soon if Apple has planned it. A few days ago, a leak suggested that Apple was working on a Blush Gold variant of the iPhone X. In fact, it went as far to say that it is in (Product)ion already.

A lot of smartphone maker off late have launched a “Special Variant” of their popular smartphones. Interestingly, Apple kind of started the trend with the iPhone 7 (Product) RED launch. Subsequently, the OnePlus 5T, Mi A1 and Honor 7X were launched in the special red colour variant. However, it is fair to say that a red coloured iPhone X will gather much more fanfare than the rest.

    iPhone X Blush Gold

If Apple does launch the iPhone X (Product) RED, it will contradict a few reports about the flagship smartphone. However, launching a new colour variant means the company still believes that the iPhone X can do even better than its current situation.

  • Huawei P20 Pro Vs Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s

Huawei P20 Pro Vs Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s

27th of March was one of the busiest days in the smartphone industry. Huawei and Xiaomi launched their flagship smartphones and Apple launched its most affordable iPad. Huawei in total launched three new smartphones. The P20, P20 Pro and the Mate RS Porsche Design. Similarly, Xiaomi launched its flagship Mi MIX 2s. These devices have top of the line specifications with premium build quality. The Huawei P20 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s are those devices, which offers the best camera, best design and best hardware without a premium price tag. However, the 899 Euros price tag of the P20 Pro is much more than the 3299 Yuan (423 Euros) price of the Mi MIX 2s.

The display is one of the most important parts of a smartphone. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s has a 5.99 inch IPS LCD screen with FHD+ 2160 x 1080 px resolution. Similarly, the Huawei P20 Pro has a 6.1 inch 2244 x 1080 px OLED display. The OLED display always has an advantage over an IPS LCD display in colour reproduction and offers higher contrast ratio. However, an OLED display is also known for the infamous pixel burn issue, which degrades the quality of the display.

    Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s
Huawei P20 Pro with a notch

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with 6/8GB RAM, which will feature in most of the Android flagship smartphones of 2018. The chipset scores record-breaking benchmark scores and offers a great set of features with latest LTE standards and Bluetooth 5.0. On the other hand, the Huawei P20 Pro has a HiSilicon Kirin 970 Octa-core chipset with 6GB RAM. This is an in-house chipset from Huawei with a dedicated neural engine. When it comes to day to day usage, these chipsets will perform like a pro. However, some of the games might work better on a Qualcomm chipset powered Mi MIX 2s due to better optimisation.

The camera is one more department where these smartphones will excel. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s has a dual primary camera setup with a 12MP wide-angle and a 12MP telephoto lens. This camera has AI capabilities with features like bokeh mode, 4K video recording capability. The Huawei P20 Pro has a triple camera setup with a 40MP RGB, 20MP monochrome and an 8MP depth sensor. The smartphone offers 3x optical zoom, 4K video recording and super slow motion 960fps video recording. Due to larger pixel size, the smartphone can capture high-quality photos even in low lighting condition.

  • Huawei Freebuds Look A Lot Like Apple AirPods And Cost 159 Euros

Huawei Freebuds Look A Lot Like Apple AirPods And Cost 159 Euros

On the 27th of March, Huawei launched the P20 Pro, P20 and the Mate RS Porsche Design. While the P20 Pro and Mate RS sport a triple-camera setup, the P20 has impressive specs as well. But, the company also announced a new accessory that looks curiously similar to an Apple product. Huawei has launched the Freebuds, a pair of wireless Bluetooth earbuds at a price of EUR 159.

Interestingly, the new Freebuds look very similar to the Apple AirPods that retail for US$ 159 in the US. Similar to the AirPods, the Freebuds also retail with a carrying/charging case. However, the Freebuds are available in Black and White colour options. However, the company has deviated from Apple when it comes to the implementation of the carrying case. Unlike the vertical orientation of the AirPods, the Freebuds lay horizontally in the tiny charging case.

The Freebuds one-up the AirPods in the battery department. Huawei claims the earbuds have a battery life of up to 10 hours, while the AirPods only last 5 hours on a single charge. The Freebuds will work nicely with the Huawei P20 series, however, it’ll be interesting to see the ease of usability of the earbuds when compared with the AirPods.

The AirPods have the W1 chip, which means they can be instantly paired with an Apple device by just flipping open the charging case. Unlike regular Bluetooth earbuds, there isn’t painstakingly long pairing process. Whether the Freebuds will have features, only time and testing will tell.

Huawei has launchd an updated pair of Active Noise Canceling Earphones 3. The third sound accessory is a new DAC Headphone Amplifier.

  • Apple Watch Series 4 Will Have A 15% Bigger Screen And A New Design

Apple Watch Series 4 Will Have A 15% Bigger Screen And A New Design

The smartwatch industry, much like tablets, is dominated by Apple. Google recently rebranded its smartwatch OS to Wear OS in a bid to revive it a bit. However, all of that might not come to any fruition as Apple plans a design overhaul for the upcoming Apple Watch. Apple has already launched three generations of the Apple Watch. However, all three generations look very similar. According to a new report, the Apple Watch Series 4 will have a new design with a 15% bigger screen.

    Apple Watch Series 4
Apple Watch Series 2 Nike Edition

The Apple Watch Series 4 will debut in September 2018, along with the new iPhones. According to KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo, the watch will have a newer design with a bigger screen and a longer lasting battery life. • Facebook Won’t Unveil Its Smart Speaker Amid Data Leak Controversy

Facebook Won’t Unveil Its Smart Speaker Amid Data Leak Controversy

Facebook was going to unveil its smart speaker at its biggest developer conference in May this year. However, after the recent public outrage, the company has decided not to reveal any product right now. The report claims that Facebook will carefully examine the speakers and make sure it doesn’t violate any data privacy rules.

Recently, Facebook got pulled into a data leak scandal along with a British analytics firm for unlawfully sharing personal user data. Which in turn could have played a huge role in the US Presidential Elections. The controversy has sparked off a huge debate about social media and Facebook is at the helm of it. It makes sense for Facebook to not unveil a new product line at the point, as it may not be met with a lot of open minds and will be heavily scrutinised, irrespective of how secure it might be.

    Amazon Echo Show

    The report says:

Facebook’s hardware products are undergoing a deeper review to ensure that they make the right trade-offs regarding user data.

Even though the smart speaker was not going to be available for purchase before fall, it was planning to unveil the speaker in May. However, the company has now decided to lay off from any announcement until the public outrage cools off.

It is already a bit late in the smart speaker game, and delaying it further will not help its case. However, looking at the current situation and the kind of situation it is in, the decision might be essential, if not correct. Ever since the controversy, Facebook has lost over US$ 60 billion in market cap and many people have decided to delete their Facebook accounts. However, considering Facebook has an active monthly user base of 2.2 billion people, losing a few here and there won’t have a huge impact.

    Amazon Echo Spot

The smart speaker will go by the moniker of Portal. A previous report claims that it would have a 13 to 15 inch display. The speaker will respond to voice commands and use facial recognition technology. This is something the company has been taking very seriously off-late. WIth voice and facial recognition, it can provide a personalized experience to different people in the house.

The Portal could also be a part of Facebook’s plan to become the largest video streaming service. With a huge display and the ease of voice commands, the Portal could become a primary source of video consumption. That, along with its own video streaming service could be a good combination. You could read everything about its new streaming service, Watch here.

Under the hood, the device will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa-core chipset with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Going by the previous leak, there might be a model with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage as well. Additionally, there will be no support for SD card.

Apple Launches 9.7 Inch iPad With Apple Pencil In India At Rs. 28000

27th March has been an eventful day for the tech industry. Companies like Xiaomi and Huawei held grand launch events to launch their new flagship devices while Apple quietly introduced a significant upgrade in its iPad lineup. The Cupertino-based tech giant held a keynote in Chicago to launch the new 9.7 inch iPad with support for Apple Pencil. The new iPad will hit the Indian shores sometime in April. The 9.7 inch iPad WiFi-only model will retail for Rs 28000 in India and start shipping some time in April. The cellular variant, on the other hand, will cost Rs 38,600. The Apple Pencil will retail separately for Rs 7600.

The new iPad has a 9.7 inch LED-backlit IPS LCD Retina display with a 2048 x 1536 resolution. The design of the iPad is reminiscent of every other iPad. It has the Home Button/Touch ID housed in the bottom bezel. The tablet will be available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold colour variants.

Powering the iPad is Apple’s own A10 Fusion chipset. This is not the latest chipset from Apple and was first introduced in the Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. While Apple’s keynote focused on the iPad’s educational benefits, it also has a few interesting AR features. Froggipedia is an app that lets students dissect a frog using the Apple Pencil.

While iOS 11 has not had the greatest of starts, it has been well-received on the iPads at least. Just like every new iOS product, the new 9.7 inch iPad will also run the latest iOS 11 version. The tablet will also get software support for many years and won’t be out-of-date anytime soon.

The new iPad also has an 8MP primary camera with f/2.4 aperture. It records 1080P videos at 30fps and 720P videos at 120fps. The 1.2MP front-facing camera records 720P videos and has an f/2.2 aperture.

The tablet industry, so far, has been dominated by Apple and the dwindling popularity of Android tablets is an apt evidence of that. However, globally, the iPads have a great competition from Chromebooks, which are very affordable and offer something different than an entry-level iPad.
