  • NVIDIA Teases A ‘Super’ Upgrade In Graphics Ahead Of Computex 2019

NVIDIA Teases A ‘Super’ Upgrade In Graphics Ahead Of Computex 2019

Computex 2019 is just around the corner, and brands are gearing up to showcase some of the best products and developments in computing. It is apparent that the PC market is unlikely to dwindle anytime soon which a few reports from the past claimed. Popular brands are innovating with newer products and techniques that bump up performance levels of machines while curbing the prices at the same time. Amidst all this, American chip manufacturer NVIDIA has posted a teaser on its YouTube channel, which hints at something “Super” making its way to the Computex 2019 event being held in Taiwan from 28 May to 1 June.

NVIDIA At Computex 2019: What To Expect?

As per reports, the company is already planning a press conference at the said event. There is a chance that the “Super” announcement is AI/Software related since NVIDIA RTX and 16-series cards are still fairly new to the market. However, the company can unveil a significant upgrade to one of its older cards to bring them at par with the competition looming up ahead. And talking of competition, AMD’s Navi GPUs are also set to make a debut in the not-so-distant future, which might shift NVIDIA in its seat a little.

    NVIDIA TITAN RTX GPU

As per sources, NVIDIA is planning to incorporate a faster 16Gbps memory standard in its existing RTX series of GPUs. This will be a significant boost from the previous 14Gbps memory in the GPUs. A 2Gbps memory improvement is expected to provide almost 14 percent of performance boost if and when it is implemented. However, the question of price still takes the podium. Will NVIDIA charge a hefty price for such an upgrade in the future?

Since the teaser shows nothing except the embossed metal super logo (from a variety of angles), fans are only left with the option of taking wild guesses and waiting for the press conference at the event itself. As mentioned before, AMD’s price point for the upcoming Navi-based graphics chips may (severely) affect NVIDIA’s flagship lineup. But since the company has emerged unscathed time and again, we can expect NVIDIA to have a neat trick up its sleeve for Computex 2019.

  • Google Is Reimbursing Pixel 1 Owners In The US, But What About India?

Google Is Reimbursing Pixel 1 Owners In The US, But What About India?

Since Google unveiled the first Pixel device back in the year 2016 , it has continued to improve the design and features of the smartphone. However, the company particularly focused on the camera which has outshined most other smartphone cameras in the market. Lately, however, incidents are inadvertently pointing towards the fact that Google might not be paying enough attention to its southeast Asian market. Is there a reason behind this, or is the organization just acting ignorant towards the obvious?

    Google Pixel XL
    Google Pixel XL

Earlier in May 2019, Pixel users around the world reported a variety of malfunctions with their devices. Further probing led to the discovery of the fact that Google had knowingly retailed Pixel smartphones that had faulty solder connections. Google admitted that some phones (less than 1 percent) exhibited an issue with calling and the Google assistant. The anomaly was traced back to a hairline crack on the audio codec’s solder point/connection.

    Android 9 Pie

As a conclusion to the aforementioned accusation, the company ended up paying US$ 7.25 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by “angry” Pixel users. Google settled the case, and as per reports, it owes Pixel Owners an amount of up to US$ 500 per device. Even if owners are not eligible for the complete reimbursement, some money is surely arriving their way. Except, the company is reimbursing solely US-based Pixel smartphone owners. No, India isn’t on the list. A screenshot sent to us by an anonymous Indian Pixel smartphone buyer clearly depicts the attitude of the company towards the consumer base.

A noteworthy point is that the American technology giant was also receiving reports from countries other than the United States, including India. However, Google has not released any statement regarding refunds for India-based Pixel smartphone owners or any other country for that matter. Is it because of a selfish motive, or is it just a part of the company’s plan to tackle this situation in the best way possible?

A major factor why Google is reimbursing US-based Pixel users can be the enforcement of consumer laws in the United States. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) of the US puts forward laws that aim to curb unfair, deceptive and fraudulent business practices by collecting complaints and conducting investigations. It is highly probable that in order to avoid such a situation, Google may have decided to take the “refund” road. On the other hand, Consumer laws in India are not enforced as strictly as compared to selective other countries, which may be a probable reason for the same.

    Google Pixel
    Pixel 3 XL

Another point that can be taken into consideration is the number of Pixel devices being sold by Google in both the regions. Talking about US, Google Pixel is one of the fastest growing brands as of February 2019. Even though the company’s current Pixel 3 flagship lineup hasn’t really made a dent in the market, the company maintains a strong position in the United States.

    Google Pixel back

In contrast, Google has not really managed to retail a whole lot of Pixel devices in India. This may be because of the higher price point of Pixel smartphones in India as compared to the States. For instance, the Google Pixel 3a retails for US$ 399 in the US. Roughly converting the price to INR yields an amount of  INR 27,900, which is miles apart from the price it is being actually retailed in India i.e. INR 39,999. When a lot of consumers prefer smartphones from Chinese brands that offer more value-for-money, it is less likely that premium brands can make a greater impact in the market. For the same reason, it is possible that Google wants to hold its spot in the US Market.

In spite of all facts, figures and speculations, there might be a slight possibility that once an increased number of reports and conflicts start pouring in, Google might consider a similar way out of the “Pixel” situation in India. However, no official statement from the company has been received as of now, indicating that Google may act dry on this particular incident.

ARM Terminates All Ties With Huawei After US Ban

Huawei has been dealt another critical blow in the form of support withdrawal from ARM. The UK based company licenses the architectural design for the most smartphone chipset. After already have been knocked down by the loss of Android OS after the controversial US ban. The aforementioned ban was enforced by the US Commerce Department on all American firms to cease any forms of business ties or trades with the Chinese firm Huawei. This move had already crippled the company with the loss of the operating systems (Windows, Android) for the computing products they offer.

The rippling effect of the oncoming ban essentially weakens the Chinese based company’s structure and functions. Huawei’s ambitious climb to the top came to a staggering halt as the UK based chipset manufacturer ARM, has ordered to cease all ongoing support or projects with the Chinese firm.ARM Kirin

Since the US President’s decision on moving Huawei to the ‘Entity’ list, the business became restrictive and limited between the US based firms and its eastern counterpart. The ARM’s chip design is not easily replaceable or solvable. The UK based chipset manufacturer, although owned by the Japanese Firm SoftBank, has many of its technologies originated in the United States.ARM Kirin 980

ARM’s chipset architecture is used by every major phone manufacturing company, name and not limited to, Qualcomm and Huawei. ARM’s belief is being held accountable under the US Regulations breach by operating with Huawei. Consequently, this also impacts ARM’s China joint-venture that aims to increase the impact of ARM technologies support on the country. ARM was reported to have a 49% stake in the joint-venture.

Google Stored Passwords In An Unsecured Manner For 14 Years On G Suite

A Google Blog post disclosed a bug in the company’s G Suite platform that had caused a small portion of the user base to have their secure passwords being saved in a plain text format. The American tech giant reports that the bug has been in the system for the past fourteen years unchecked, although it claims that the bug has not been abused till now and that their investigation into the matter yielded no evidence that pointed towards unwarranted access. Google has reset any of the passwords that may have been affected by the bug. G Suite is the business/corporate version of Google’s Gmail and other Google related applications. Reportedly the bug was born out of a feature that was made specifically for companies, namely the Administrators to reset any user passwords or accounts for newly recruited employees. This process had the Admin console store the passwords in plain text instead of being encrypted. Google has since removed this function for Administrators.

Google thereon reassures how the unencrypted passwords were stored safely in the company’s own servers rather on the internet which is objectively easier to mediate. Google painstakingly explained the subtlety of cryptographic hashing to clear out all doubts surrounding the bug. Furthermore, all unchanged passwords will be reset automatically.

Google has a relatively good track record of detecting bugs and glitches in their system, but this bug points a finger towards a myriad of tech giants and social media companies as well such as Facebook which had also previously saved several hundreds of millions of passwords in plain text. It was accessible to its employees. Similarly, Twitter had also asked its entire user base to reset their passwords due to concerns regarding private data account access.

Along with the report of the bug and other technical jargon to it, Google also issued an official apology for this oversight and assured their users of their “industry leading” practices and control over the situation. Google concluded by explicitly stating the fact that the aforementioned bug went unchecked for 14 years was rather disconcerting to the company and equally disturbing for its users.

As per reports, the aforementioned features will make their way to older OnePlus devices, including the OnePlus 6, 6T, 5 and 5T.

    Zen Mode And Screen Recorder

OnePlus 7 ProZen Mode is a feature that basically locks a user out of his/her device for 20 minutes. The user will not see/hear any notifications on the device, and at the same time, applications will be unusable as well. The only two features that are accessible is the call application and the camera. In case users decide to turn off Zen Mode before the time period of 20 minutes, they are out of luck, since no workaround will disable Zen Mode. Even restarting the OnePlus 7 Pro doesn’t help, as the Zen Mode timer continues from the same point you left it on.

OnePlus 7 Pro PUBGThe screen recorder, on the other hand, allows native recording (in the same number of frames per second) of the screen’s display without any overlay or watermark. Gamers can record their gaming sessions and export them, or users can create how-to videos for conveying specific information. As per reports, some OnePlus users side loaded these two applications into their older devices, which didn’t function as desired. For instance, sound capture was disabled during screen recording and Zen Mode was still allowing notifications to push through.

Not something that’ll whisk away Gamers from their adored Discord Voice Chat App, but a Steam Chat is an interesting take on the same formula of

    • Friend’s List: Users can see their friends’ activity, for instance, which game are they playing.
    • Invite Links: Steam Users can add new friends with an Invite Link.
    • Group Chats: Users can have their eSports teams together under a special group.

Stanford Students Develop An Inexpensive Robo Dog That Can Perform Acrobatics

The advancements in Robotics have made the field more accessible to enthusiasts. As per fresh news, students at Stanford University have designed a four-legged robotic dog that can perform acrobatic tricks and overcome challenging terrains. But the most interesting part is the fact that the robot can easily be reproduced with readily available parts. The dog has been named the “Stanford Doggo” and has been made freely available online, albeit in a different way.

Cost Of Developing The Robotic Doggo

Robot Doggo FrontAs per the Stanford Student Robotics Club’s Extreme Mobility Team, the cost of developing conventional robots can range anywhere between tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. On the other hand, the Stanford Doggo can be manufactured under US$ 3000, and this includes manufacturing and shipping costs. Almost all the components required for manufacturing the Doggo can be purchased online. The students expect that this will enable researchers and robotics enthusiasts to develop innovative projects the way they want.

Robotic Doggo WorkingThe Stanford Doggo is similar to a regular-sized Beagle in terms of size, and it can walk, trot and dance with ease. More complex actions include jumping, hopping and performing backflips. Since the students built up the robotic dog from scratch, a lot of time had to be devoted in order to test each part of the Doggo. Moreover, the students did not rely on any form of simulations during the development of the robot, making it even more difficult to predict results.

Brain Aneurysms Can Be Treated With The Help Of A Cancer Drug

Brain Aneurysms are caused when there is a bulge in a blood vessel caused by a weakness in its wall. When blood flows through the weakened vessel, the pressure causes the area to bulge outwards and cause problems in the surrounding regions. They commonly occur in the abdominal aorta and the brain. Aneurysms can affect any number of people, ranging from 1 in 100 to 1 in 20. Since its treatment is difficult, surgery is usually avoided, but in select cases, it becomes a necessity. In a notable research study, a class of cancer-treatment drugs can be used to treat patients with brain aneurysms.

AneurysmScientists from the University of Sussex worked in a collaboration with researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, USA. The treatment involves the usage of ‘Receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors’; which is a class of drug currently being used to treat cancer. A number of complex DNA sequencing techniques were implemented, and a new genetic basis of a brain aneurysm form was identified. Manuel Ferreira states that the mutations in the aforementioned gene were completely different from the ones that were previously detected in brain aneurysms.

Further reports state that multiple disease-associated mutations in PDGFRB (Platelet Derived Growth Factor Receptor Beta) was the major reason for a major abnormality in the protein that was encoded in the receptor. PDGFRB is a Protein Coding gene. Because of the abnormality, the activity of the protein is always set to “hyper-active”, which means that the gene associated with the protein is always “turned on”. As per the lead professor in the study, this discovery depicts how lab-derived observations can be upscaled to a clinical level, which can then be used to make revolutionary discoveries pertaining to healthcare and treatments.

Google Releases Data Showing The Importance Of Recovery Phone Numbers

Most users know how frustrating remembering multiple passwords can be. An increasing number of services these days require users to sign up with their phone numbers and email addresses. Two-factor authentication is a another security feature which is gaining popularity these days. In two-factor authentication, users first need to login with their credentials and then enter the OTP received on their device to securely access their accounts. The latest data released by Google depicts how effective can some of the aforementioned security techniques be.

The year long study on security attacks was presented by the company at a gathering of experts and policy-makers, called the Web conference. Google’s research stated that adding a recovery phone number can block up to 100% of all automated bots, 99% of all bulk phishing attacks and 66% of targeted security attacks. The American technology giant also highlighted the difference between SMS-based login and on-device prompt-based login techniques. As per Google, an SMS verification code sent to the recovery phone number blocked 100% of all automated bots, 96% of bulk phishing attacks and 76% of targeted attacks. On the other hand, on-device prompts helped in averting 100% of all automated bots, 99% of bulk phishing attacks and 90% of targeted attacks. As deduced, using on-device prompts for logging into accounts is almost 14% more secure than using OTPs for login.
