Nokia 7.2 Leaked Live Images Showcase A Triple Camera Setup & Waterdrop Notch

HMD Global owned Nokia launched the first smartphone under its new 7 series last year. Dubbed the Nokia 7.1, it is a mid-range device which was praised for its premium design and capable specifications. It was then revealed a few days ago that the company is working on its successor which will be called the Nokia 7.2. In the subsequent weeks, the images and design of the handset were leaked online, and it was known that the smartphone is about to launch on the 5th of September at IFA, Berlin. Now as we move closer to the launch, more images of the Nokia 7.2 has surfaced online; which confirm the previously leaked design aspects.

The Nokia 7.2 will be another mid-range offering from HMD Global. Latest images of the smartphone reveal it will have a glass sandwich design with a bluish-green coloured back panel, but it may be offered in more than one colour when launched. The front of the device has minimal bezels with a waterdrop notch on the top. The interface of the handset is visibly stock Android, which suggests it may be Android One certified. This means it will receive major software updates for two years and security updates for three years.

Over at the back, the Nokia 7.2 has a triple camera setup and an LED flash inside a circular housing. This new design characteristic is unlike what the company has implemented before. Underneath the camera setup, a physical fingerprint sensor can be seen; which may be surprising to some as in-display fingerprint scanners are becoming commonplace in many mid-range devices. While other specifications of the handset are not known, rumours point out to a Snapdragon 710 coupled with up to 6GB of RAM inside. Unfortunately, other details like the pricing of the Nokia 7.2 are not known yet. However, since there is little time left before the official announcement, we might not have to wait too long to find that out.

Nokia Announces Android 10 Update Schedule For Existing Smartphones

In the last couple of hours, we have received two major news from Google and Nokia. First, that Google’s Android Q’s official name is Android 10. Second, Nokia has announced its Android 10 schedule for its existing smartphones that are part of the Android One program. The announcements came one after the other and here’s a short breakdown of it.

    Android 10

    Nokia Update Timeline

Nokia had re-entered the global market with its Android One smartphones two years ago. Since then, the company has seen a warm welcome owing to a bloatware-free experience its devices offer. Most of the handsets offered by Nokia are targetted towards mid to budget range which is uncommon for an Android One device to be. For those unaware, it is a program started by Google that ensures the device running the stock Android gets at least two major Android updates and security patches for three years.

In other words, Nokia devices are ensured for long term use. The company shared its schedule regarding the roll-out of Android Q on its devices which is as follows:

    2019 Q4:

    • Nokia 7.1
    • Nokia 8.1
    • Nokia 9 PureView

    2020 Q1:

    • Nokia 6.1
    • Nokia 6.1 Plus
    • Nokia 7 Plus
    • Nokia 2.2
    • Nokia 3.1 Plus
    • Nokia 3.2
    • Nokia 4.2
    • Nokia 1 Plus
    • Nokia 5.1 Plus
    • Nokia 8 Sirocco

    2020 Q2:

    • Nokia 2.1
    • Nokia 3.1
    • Nokia 5.1
    • Nokia 1

    Android 10

    Google Android 10

Google has officially announced that it is parting from its beloved naming philosophy. The sweet-toothed names that were associated with each new generation of the OS are finally being sobered down. It has been confirmed that Android Q will officially be called Android 10. The reason the company said for this major change is to help people understand generations better.

The example given out was that some regions cannot distinguish between L or R in regional languages. So, simply saying Lollipop makes no sense to them. Thus, Google is employing a clean, sober and chronological name scheming. It would also seek to not have certain countries in the world feel left out over dessert names from their region (R for Rasgulla Or L for Laddo ;)). The move by Google is purely unifying and simplifying in nature.

One is likely a to be a flagship-grade device while the other is likely powered by a Snapdragon 700 series chipset. Speculated Pricing

Nokia launched the 8.1 in two storage and RAM variants that started from INR 26,999, hence, Nokia 8.2 might be priced within a similar bracket. It is possible that the latest iteration may touch the INR 30k mark or even cross it. Considering Xiaomi launched Redmi K20 with Snapdragon 730 starting at INR 21,999, Nokia might launch the 8.2 around the original 8.1’s asking price to stay competitive.

Despite the rise in popularity of smartphones in the last few years, many people in developing countries still use feature phones. Numerous countries in Asia, South America and Africa are still the predominant market for the feature phones. It has been claimed multiple times in the past that Google is developing a version of Android OS for feature phones. This is to capture the market that has been missed by the company until now. The latest leaks reveal that HMD Global’s Nokia, which is one of the few companies making feature phones, will be the first to launch a device with the new version of Android. In the images, a feature phone in development from Nokia is showcased. The home screen of the upcoming mobile phone features an all-new design for Android. Since the OS was originally designed to work for touchscreen devices, the interface seems to be adapted for use with just buttons.

This insinuates that the Nokia feature phone will have the digital voice assistant built-in. Also present on the handset are multiple Google apps like Chrome and YouTube; which seem to be designed to run on a small-sized display without touch input. The rest of the User Interface (UI) is similar to what feature phones from Nokia had in the past. While the images provide authenticity to the claim that Google is working on bringing Android to feature phones; the source claims to take the aforementioned information with a grain of salt, as the images could very well be of a Nokia handset running a new version of KaiOS, another popular OS for feature phones.

  • The Nokia Ion Prototype Is The Bitesized Android That Company Should Have Made

The Nokia Ion Prototype Is The Bitesized Android That Company Should Have Made

The smartphone market is currently dominated by two mobile operating systems which include Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. About a decade ago the conditions were not the same as they are now. There used to Nokia which single-handedly dominated the mobile phone market with its S40 and Symbian phones.

However, with passing time and shift in consumer trends, the two mobile operating systems developed by Nokia vanished. Encountering fierce competition, the company did not reveal its first Android smartphone, the Nokia X till 2014. Though it had other prototype smartphones in development which unfortunately never saw the light of the day.

One such device is the ultra-compact Nokia Ion Mini prototype, which is currently listed for auction on eBay. The device has a distinctive design with plastic and aluminium build. Even when placed next to the iPhone 5S from 2014, the Nokia Ion Mini seems like a puny toy.

Even though the listing does not reveal the screen size of the Nokia Ion Mini, it does state the display has a wvga resolution of 480 x 800. Still, it can be assumed that the display on the device would approximately measure 3 inch.

Under the hood, the Nokia Ion Mini packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 which is clocked at 1.2 GHz. The listing states that the smartphone runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean which was unveiled in the year 2013. Connectivity options on the smartphone include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G. Also, according to the listing, the device is carrier unlocked so users from around the globe can use it, in case they intend to do so.

As previously mentioned, the Nokia Ion Mini prototype with an appealing design is listed on eBay UK at a price of US $ 1,999. Though the price is very steep and it is much more than the device would have originally intended for. Taking into consideration it is a rare device, this is mfore of a collectors item than a device that the conventional user would use on a day to day basis. For reference, the futuristic Galaxy Fold which is expected to be made commercially available next month is priced for US$ 1980.

It won’t be fair to say that this charming and ultra pocketable Nokia Ion Mini could have taken down Samsung’s behemoth army of varied smartphones by itself. Though it could have generated its own following amongst consumers that intend to buy a compact handset.

  • Nokia Claims Of Doubling Smartphone Battery Via New Tech

Nokia Claims Of Doubling Smartphone Battery Via New Tech

The onset of smartphones carried an innate problem of lower battery life, caused due to higher mobile computing on older battery types. The first few waves of smartphones hadn’t implemented any revolutionary design to curb the quick-drying devices. However, OEMs quickly caught on and developed smartphones with better and longer battery life. Nokia now sits at the forefront with its claim of doubling the known battery life of its devices.

    Nokia

Most smartphone manufacturers have either increased the battery capacity or optimised it through AI. Even smart machine learning has been used to cleverly increase battery backup of handsets. The world is now moving towards a faster and more power hungry networking bandwidth, namely 5G. The need for smartphones to cope with the higher bandwidth will soon place emphasis on improving battery life again

    Nokia

An announcement was made from the Nokia Bell Labs and AMBER, the SFI Centre for Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research. Reportedly, 5G will consume more battery than 4G networks. Nokia plans on battling this by packing more energy into a smaller space via the new battery technology. This could potentially have a huge impact in the near future that is 5G enabled. Nokia’s Bell Labs device expertise in collaboration with AMBER’s material sciences knowledge has helped solve hurdles on various dimensions.

    Nokia

Nokia has claimed that the lithium nanotube-aided battery developed by the conjunction can deliver upto 2.5 times the battery life provided by any of the industries current best smartphones. The smartphone manufacturers need not worry about the thickness of their smartphones. The company claims that the aforementioned battery bump can be achieved without even increasing the battery size. Nokia’s new technology would essentially double the battery life in the same slim form factor everyone is accustomed to.

An underlying benefit of this technology is the potential to improve large-scale energy grids powered by renewable energy. A study conducted by Wood Mackenzie, a UK-based chemicals firm, confirmed this by reporting an estimated 25 times higher energy storage capacity than the current systems that are implemented.

Unfortunately, the announcement has yet to provide any substantial evidence or ETA as to when the new technology might actually be seen. It is expected to be officially showcased in a year, but future smartphone integration might be even slower.

The Nokia 9 Pureview’s had a lukewarm reception in the few countries that received it and ever since no other smartphone from the company has competed in the premium segment of smartphones.
