Firefox Send Allows Users To Share Files Up to 2.5 GB With End-to-end Encryption

Mozilla, the developers of the Firefox browser has introduced a service that simplifies the process of sharing large files securely over the internet. The service is called Firefox send and it originally debuted back in August 2017 as a ‘Test Pilot’ experiment. The company has announced that the service is now available for general public use.

    Firefox Send Features and Benefits

The concept behind the service is to allow users to share files electronically via a secure and simplified platform. The newly publicised Firefox send allows users to send files up to 2.5 GB in size in an end-to-end encrypted manner. Other notable services including Gmail only allows sharing files which are much smaller in size in comparison to Mozilla’s platform. Specifically, Gmail only allows sharing files that have a maximum size of 25 MB. Files greater than this size are shared via Google Drive which again takes up allotted cloud storage.

Another advantage that Mozilla send offers is automatically expiring links. The automatically expiring links can be set on the basis of two different facets. The user can either choose a period or the number of downloads before the link goes void. Users have an option of choosing between 1 to 100 number of downloads or 5 minutes to 7 days in terms of time period. Also, the user can set a password which they can share with other users they intend to share the files with.

Noteworthy, the user must log in with a valid Mozilla account in order to set the time period to 7 days or the number of downloads to greater than 1. Overall, it is a simple and nifty tool that is free to use and can come in handy at times.

  • World Wide Web Turns 30, Top 10 Internet Moments

World Wide Web Turns 30, Top 10 Internet Moments

The World Wide Web or WWW for short has turned 30 today. It is the anniversary of the information space that has since changed the world drastically. The Internet is accessible everywhere in the world and is used for just about anything you can ever imagine. But it wasn’t always like that. Let’s take a moment to look back at the top 10 moments that have shaped the Internet to what it is today.

    1) The Creation Of The World Wide Web

In March 1989, Sir Tim Berners-Lee submitted a proposal to his chief at CERN, a science lab outside Geneva, Switzerland. The proposal was of the World Wide Web as a communication medium for the organisation. His idea at the time was called “Vague, but exciting” by his supervisor.

    2) The First Website

The world’s first website went live on August 6, 1991, and was created by CERN. It has information and details about the world wide web project and also marked the time when the idea was shared with the world. It might not look up to the standards of 2019 but it was a big deal when it was set up and made way for the foundation of the internet.

    3) Amazon Was Created

On the 5th of July 1994, Jeff Bezos founded the world’s first online bookstore which he called ‘Cadabra’ but later changed its name to Amazon due to a misunderstanding with a lawyer. The website is one of the largest E-commerce stores today and has made its founder one of the wealthiest people in the world.

    4) Hotmail Revolutionizes Email

On 4th July 1996, Hotmail was founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith. It was the first email service not tied down to a particular ISP and used HTML based email formatting methods. The advent of Hotmail is still considered one of the biggest steps in revolutionizing email.

    5) First Mobile Phone With Internet Access

There was a time when Nokia reigned supreme in the mobile business. That may not be the case today but it did make the world’s first phone with access to the internet natively. It was the Nokia 9000 communicator which had the feature. However, the device did not perform well in terms of sales because of a steep price and lack of proper internet penetration. The fact cannot be denied that this device undoubtedly paved the way for mobile internet as it is today.

    6) Google Searched Its Way Into Our Homes

It’s hard to imagine one’s life without Google in today’s world. But in the year 1995, it was named ‘Backrub’ and was just a research project at Stanford University. However, the project turned into a reality on the 7th of September 1998, with the name Google derived from the word ‘Googol’ which is said to be the largest number in the world.

    7) Wikipedia Made Assignments Easier

All of us have heard of or have visited Wikipedia once to assist with our assignments. The first entry on the free encyclopedia was published on 15th January 2001, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. The name Wikipedia is derived from the Hawaiian word for ‘quick’. It has since then starred in a number of controversies, particularly because of the decentralised option to edit data. Nonetheless, Wikipedia is still the first source people learn about most topics.

    8) Facebook Connected The World

In February of 2004, 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg and his friend Eduardo Saverin started Facebook. What started as a way for students in a university to connect to each other quickly became a rage across the world. It also made Zuckerberg the youngest self-made billionaire at the time. Despite the controversies the platform faces today, Facebook still holds a significant place in shaping the Internet to where it is today.

    9) First YouTube Video Shared

On April 23 of 2005, ex-PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim uploaded the first video on YouTube. The video sharing website is now the primary medium users watch videos online. It was a simple video of a Zoo and was shot by Karim himself. The platform now has over 1.3 billion users and the users aggregately account for over 5 billion videos views every single day.

    10) First Tweet Was Sent

On 21st March 2006, Jack Dorsey sent out the first tweet which still exists on his profile. The tweet read “Just setting up my twttr”. The platform was called ‘twttr’ for a long time which was inspired by Flickr. Then the name was changed to Twitter and it paved its way into the widely popular social media network as we know today.

  • Pokemon Go Styled, Harry Potter Wizards United To Launch Soon

Pokemon Go Styled, Harry Potter Wizards United To Launch Soon

The creators of Pokemon Go are at the crease with another new game, and this time, players will explore the world of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Universe. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is supposed to release in the upcoming months, and while the game aims to include all of the “walking and earning rewards” mechanics of Pokemon GO, it will also integrate a huge storyline and various other activities that will make the game much more complex than Pokemon GO.

    Game Overview

The first look of the game is now out, thanks to Warner Bros. and Niantic Games. The primary mission of the game is to save non-magic folk (also known as Muggles) from evil wizards, and capture them all before they cause any more havoc. The players will play as a recruit of the Statue of Secrecy Task Force, which is a venture by the Ministry of Magic and the International Confederation of Wizards to lock down all the rogue wizards that threaten the sanctity of the wizarding world.

Players will use various magical spells and potions to defeat the wizards. During their adventures, players may find some magical items or characters called Foundables, which can only be dispelled if the player casts a magical spell on it. In doing so, players will earn unique rewards that can be accessed via the game Registry. Furthermore, players may find foundables at a variety of public places like parks, galleries, libraries, and monuments.

    Item Mechanics

The game will also introduce “Spell Energy” to limit how much users can play in a given stretch of time. Once a player runs out of Spell Energy, he/she won’t be able to cast spells until the Spell energy is replenished at “Inns” by collecting food items and drinks. Also, the player can brew potions to help him/her during battles and travelling. The items required for brewing can be found around the map, and their availability depends on the environment (such as weather, time of day).

Users may come across “Portmanteaus”, which can be unlocked to reveal different Porkeys around the whole map. Entering a portkey will take the player to AR environments from the Harry Potter universe, such as Ollivander’s Wand Shop.

    Combat Mechanics

Fortresses are to Wizards Unite what Gyms are to Pokemon GO. To battle real-time opponents, players can head to multiple Fortresses on the map, where they can battle enemies such as Dementors and Death Eaters. Co-op battles would ensure higher chances of winning at such battles, as per the Game blog. The game will have different classes of wizards, namely Aurors, Magizoologists, and Professors. Players will have to strategize and team up with appropriate classes in order to defeat tough foes.

The Xperia 4 will have a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 2520×1080 px. Like its siblings, the smartphone is expected to have a side mounted fingerprint scanner, embedded in the power button and will support face unlock technology.

Google Pixel 2 Spotted Running Android Q Beta On Geekbench

Mountain View, California based Google is soon expected to release the first Android Q beta for Pixel smartphones. Before its official rollout,  a Google Pixel 2 smartphone running the aforementioned version of Android has been spotted on Geekbench. The device secures a single core score of 1856 points and a multi-core score of 6307 points which is comparable to a device running Android 9 Pie.

Although Google has not yet confirmed the date of the rollout, the listing indicates that the update will be dispensed soon. Last year, the company released the first Android P developer preview for Pixel smartphones on the 7th of March. For at least a few weeks, the developer preview will only be exclusive for Google Pixel smartphones which will later be followed by devices of other OEMs. Notably, a Google executive in a podcast announced that updates of Android Q public beta will be rolled to several other devices as well.

What Features Will Android Q Bring To The Table?

With every Android update, Google strives to make the mobile OS smooth and bug-free. Therefore, the first and foremost change with Android Q will be speed and performance optimisation. A notable feature, that Android Q is confirmed to bring is system-wide dark mode. This feature will especially be useful for users of smartphones with an OLED display as it will prolong the battery life of the device. Other possible features that the upcoming Android update is believed to improve or add are as follows:

    • Inbuilt Screen Recording Support – As the name suggests, it allows the user to record the media or games that are being displayed on the screen. With the surge in mobile games streaming, this feature has been in high demand. Although this feature could have been added to any Android device running versions below Android Q with the help of 3rd party applications, an inbuilt screen recorded would surely be appreciated.
    • Desktop Mode – This feature will allow the user to project the display the contents of their Android device on a large screen. Hence, an Android device could be used as a desktop computer. Companies including Samsung and Huawei in the past have included a similar feature on their Android devices. However, the integration of this feature on a deeper level will result in better performance. Also, it will end the exclusivity which the users of a handful of companies are able to enjoy.
    • Improved Facial Recognition – Facial recognition is not a new feature that Android Q will bring. However, the latest update will further enhance the feature so that it is faster and more secure than before.
