  • WhatsApp For Android Finally Gets A Dark Mode

WhatsApp For Android Finally Gets A Dark Mode

After countless speculations and leaks, popular instant messaging application WhatsApp has started testing out the highly anticipated dark mode for Android. This feature has limited availability and was spotted in the Beta build of the software. Leaked screenshots reveal how the alleged dark mode will look like in WhatsApp.

    WhatsApp Dark Mode

The leaked screenshot of the WhatsApp dark mode feature has been claimed to be of the version 2.19.82 of the software. Even though the feature is live, many Beta users have claimed that the feature is not available on their devices. A few weeks ago, it was reported WhatsApp is redesigning the settings page of the Android app. It has since been insinuated it was done to ensure compatibility with the new feature.

The dark mode feature that has been leaked on WhatsApp for Android is currently only available in the settings menu. There have been reports that the chat window will retain its signature green accent colour for the foreseeable future. It is been speculated that the developers are trying to incorporate a better, darker version of the already existing chat window. The dark mode feature is expected to be rolled out in the following weeks in the stable version of the software.

The dark mode feature has been included by many developers and manufacturers in their software lately. This is because it supposedly helps in saving battery life on OLED displays because the darker areas of the screen require little to no pixels to light up. It also helps in reducing the strain on the user’s eyes in dark environments. However, instead of a solid black colour, the dark mode of WhatsApp on Android is more of greyscale in nature. This will help in reducing the eye strain but might not be of much help in increasing the battery life of the smartphone.

  • Apple Launches Apple News Plus And Apple Card

Apple Launches Apple News Plus And Apple Card

Apple’s Show Time Event saw the company launching its news subscription service, called Apple News Plus with a collection of over 300 magazines. The service aims to provide a high quality curated news experience, which forms the basis of any News application. With a premium catalogue of magazines such as the National Geographic, the Vogue, and the New Yorker, Apple News Plus launched the service in the US and Canada on March 25. In addition, the company also launched its own credit card application, known as the Apple Card, the much-awaited Apple TV+ Streaming service and the Apple Arcade, which is a game subscription service.

    About Apple News Plus

The application will be rolled out in an update for Apple devices and will bring forth a wide variety of stories and news for its users. Making the Apple News service more “premium” was Apple’s goal all along, as showcased by beautiful magazine covers in neat and impressive layouts in the application. Some magazine covers are intricately and vividly designed, others are animated and some sport a bold typography style to make a premium statement.

Apple claims that it won’t track what its users read on the News Plus application, nor will it allow advertisers to track them without their consent. With more than 5 billion articles read on the Apple News app every month, the company wants its users to make the best use of its premium news plus app rather than relying on social media networks for news that may be adulterated.

    Subscription Plans And Availability

Similar to other mainstream subscription services, Apple News Plus aims to provide paid readable content from different magazines to its premium users, who will pay a monthly fee. One of the many news sources that Apple partnered with is the Wall Street Journal, which will cater general news to the company so that Apple can do the same for its users. The News Plus subscription service will be priced at $9.99 per month for users in the United States, whereas Canadian users will have to pay $12.99 per month for the same. A welcoming piece of information is the fact that up to six members of a family can share the subscription. Furthermore, the service offers its users a free month of trial before they decide whether to pay for the premium News curation or not. First seeing the light of Canada and the US, Apple News Plus will be launched in the UK and Australia later this year.

    Apple Card

As mentioned before, Apple also unveiled its new credit card app, known as the Apple Card. The company clearly states that it is not just similar to a bank or online banking services, rather, the Apple card users will help its users be a part of a well-balanced financial life. Based on a simplicity factor that provides transparency and privacy at the same time, the Apple Card is designed specifically for the iPhone and will integrate directly with the Apple Wallet card.

    Features

One of the many defining features of the Apple Card is the elimination of any transactional charges while using it. The app will encourage users to pay lesser interest and provide them with the lowest interest rate in the market. Moreover, the Card has a very attractive rewards program which gives back a percentage of every purchase made via the card. The rewards are stored as cash on the customers’ Apple Cash card, which can be used for making other transactions. A user will get 2% cashback on every payment made via the card, while a 3% cashback will be earned for every purchase made directly from Apple. Noteworthy, any purchase made via the physical card will earn just 1 percent cash back.

Mastercard will handle all aspects of payment processing for Apple. Rumours surrounding the Apple card have been rendered true, as the company has partnered with Goldman Sachs for the card. A unique card number will be generated on the user’s iPhone and will be stored securely on the device itself. Similar to the Apple News Service, the company won’t track the contents of the purchase made by the users, or any in-depth details of the same. Clearly, Apple is focusing on the privacy end here, which a lot of customers are skeptical about these days.

  • Apple Launches Apple TV+ And Apple Arcade

Apple Launches Apple TV+ And Apple Arcade

Apple announced its newest subscription based services called Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade at an event on Monday at the Steve Jobs theatre in Cupertino, USA. The former is a video subscription service aimed at competing with rivals like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and the latter is a game subscription service. The company also announced a new Apple TV app for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, smart TVs and various streaming devices. At the same event, the company also launched the Apple News+, a news and magazine subscription service and the Apple Card, an all-new payment service.

    Apple TV+

Apple TV+ is the company’s venture into the streaming service market. It is a subscription-based video service that has a host of features to differentiate it from the competitors. Unlike Netflix and Prime Video, it has a host of channels available on TV which the users can subscribe on an individual basis. These channels include HBO, Starz, SHOWTIME, CBS All Access, Smithsonian Channel, EPIX, Tastemade, Noggin and MTV Hits. Apple has alleged that more channels from around the world will be added in the due course of time.

At the launch of Apple TV+ celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Octavia Spencer, J.J. Abrams, Jason Momoa made an appearance to announce their shows on the platform. The new Apple TV app, on the other hand, will be a host to all the new shows and channels by the company and will also offer suggestions for shows and movies from over 150 streaming applications, including Amazon Prime, Hulu, Canal+ and more. Apart from the aforementioned media, the app will also house the movies and TV shows available to purchase and/or rent from the Apple iTunes store.

The Apple TV+ video streaming service will be announced later in fall this year, which suggests a release in the fourth quarter of 2019. The company will also announce the pricing of the service at the same time. The new Apple TV app will be available to download on iOS devices, Apple TV and Mac starting this May. In a surprising move, Apple has also partnered with brands like Samsung, VIZIO, LG and Roku to bring the Apple TV app on their respective smart TV and streaming devices.

    Apple Arcade

The Apple Arcade is the world’s first mobile, desktop and TV game subscription service. It will make use of over 3,00,000 games available on the App store to bring a streamlined gaming experience. The service aims at introducing a new way to give users access to exclusive games, handpicked by Apple on the platform. A new tab named ‘Arcade’ will exist inside the App store and will allow a subscription option which in turn enable the users to try out a game in the service. Notably, all the games available in the subscription will be free to play, with no additional purchases required.

As the subscription is extended to various Apple devices, users can leave a game on an iPhone and start where they left it off on another device like an iPad, Mac or an Apple TV. Over time, more new games will be available on the service. The service will launch in fall, like the Apple TV+ and the pricing of the service, will also be announced then. In the meanwhile, interested developers can apply to be a part of Apple Arcade by visiting the link here.

  • WhatsApp Updated ‘Forwarded’ message feature Will Keep A Check On Fake News

WhatsApp Updated ‘Forwarded’ message feature Will Keep A Check On Fake News

WhatsApp is constantly testing out new features to improve the user experience on the application. The app was reported to be testing out features like Reverse Image Search and in-app web browsing. As per reports, the instant messaging service is testing out a new feature which will allow users to see the number of times a particular message has been forwarded. This will help users to reduce the amount of fake news spreading across the web since the user can figure out if a message is a part of long forwarding chain or an authentically drafted message.

    About The Feature

The new update being tested out will consist of two different features, called “Forwarding Info” and “Frequently Forwarded“. As the name suggests, the “Frequently Forwarded” label will be seen on top of those messages which have been forwarded more than 4 times, ensuring that fake news does not spread like wildfire via the application.

WhatsAppAs per the source, if the message is forwarded more than 4 times in a single chain, the “Forwarding info” label will be removed from the message and will be replaced by the “Frequently Forwarded” label. This means that users will not be able to see the complete chain of forwarding in such a case. Instead, users will have to rely on their instincts to judge whether the message is legitimate or not.

  • WhatsApp Business Now Rolling Out To iOS Devices

WhatsApp Business Now Rolling Out To iOS Devices

WhatsApp business is an application aimed towards integrating various businesses with the WhatsApp platform in order to facilitate transactions between users and the respective company. Many Indian businesses like redBus and MakeMyTrip have already become an integral part of the platform. It was previously launched for just Android in the month of January 2018. Now, an iOS version of the same has been launched by the company.

    About WhatsApp Business

As per sources, the first instance of the app was seen on the Mexican App Store. Shortly thereafter, the app was also spotted in France, Brazil and Panama. As mentioned before, the app provides direct connectivity between clients and businesses. WhatsApp business offers companies the option to create a tailored profile which can exhibit information regarding the business, like store hours, website link and a short “info” section that helps the user know more about the company.

Companies can even program some quick replies that will automatically be sent to customers when they message the business via the application. A greeting message can be created for clients to give the impression that the service is actively performing. Moreover, companies will be able to categorize their “WhatsApp customers” and label them as per their agenda. Also, the statistics option lets the business keep a check on how many messages it is receiving and how many sent messages have been read.

Businesses can use the service for free if they aim to reply to every customer in a 24-hour time frame. However, a fee is charged for a longer time period. It is very peculiar to see that WhatsApp took its fair share of time for bringing such an application to the Apple App store since this is one of the very few sources of revenue for the company. Global availability for the application hasn’t been achieved yet, although just like Android, WhatsApp Business will be available worldwide soon enough.

  • Netflix Starts Testing Rs. 250 Monthly Subscription Plan In India

Netflix Starts Testing Rs. 250 Monthly Subscription Plan In India

Netflix, ever since its venture into the video streaming business in 2007 has changed the way movies and TV shows are consumed. The company started its operations in the Indian market in the year 2016. To ascertain growth, it also started handing out free trials and even tried its hand in media production. Unfortunately, the monthly plans were still considered too expensive in the country which made the service inaccessible for most Indians. In the latest bid to change the aforementioned problem, Netflix has started testing out a monthly subscription plan worth Rs. 250 per month for mobile users.

    Netflix To Get More Affordable

The new Rs. 250 monthly subscription plan for Netflix will only be applicable for mobile consumers in the official app. Like the most affordable plan currently, it only can be used to stream on one mobile device at once. The plan allows streaming in Standard Definition (SD) quality, which generally refers to as streaming in 480p resolution. This more affordable subscription plan is aimed at making the streaming platform accessible to more users in India.

The current plans for Netflix in India start from Rs 500 per month for the base plan. This offers SD quality video on one device at a time; this device can be either a computer, TV or mobile device. The next plan is available for Rs. 650 which allows HD streaming and two devices support at the same time. The most premium subscription is the Rs 800 per month plan, which bumps up the resolution to Ultra HD and streaming on four devices simultaneously. With the new subscription, Netflix is targeting the ever increasing mobile customers in India.

Even with the new Rs 250 a month subscription plan, Netflix is still considerably more expensive than its competitors in India. For example, Amazon Prime Video is available at Rs. 129 per month or alternatively Rs. 999 per year. Hotstar, another video streaming platform is available starting Rs 199 per month. Both these services, despite having a significantly smaller media library is more affordable than Netflix. It is expected that the company will see a notable increase in subscriber count with the new plan.

  • Two-Thirds Of The Antivirus Apps On Android Are Fake, Claims Study

Two-Thirds Of The Antivirus Apps On Android Are Fake, Claims Study

As more parts of the world get connected to the Internet, the risk of malicious programs downloaded online also increases. In a study conducted in the month of January 2019, AV-Comparatives, a reputed Austrian independent organization that tests and evaluates antivirus software; has found that about two-thirds of the antivirus applications found on the Google Play Store are fake.

    Criteria Of Testing

The test on the antivirus apps was conducted on the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Nexus 5 smartphones to simulate real-world usage. The devices were claimed to be running on Android 8.0 Oreo and 6.0.1 Marshmallow respectively. The test was conducted using a process that included the following steps.

    • Opening Chrome browser and downloading the malicious sample
    • Opening the downloaded .apk file using a file explorer app
    • Installing the malicious app
    • Running the app

The test conducted on the different antivirus applications checked them for their efficacy in protecting against around 2,000 common Android malware threats discovered in the year 2018. If at any given point of time, the antivirus app notified about the presence of the malicious app, the test was then concluded and the sample was considered detected. The organization claims that an automated Android testing framework ran the tests on the apps.

    Results Of The Study

The study was conducted on over 250 antivirus applications that are currently available on the Google Play Store. Out of all the tested applications, only 80 were able to accomplish what they advertise that too a limited extent. However, it is noteworthy that these applications were only able to detect 30 percent of all malware laden programs.

    Android Pie Android 9 Google

Around 170 apps were then found to be at risk, which essentially meant that they were either ineffective or unreliable. Some of the apps were identified to be risky because they used a third party engine; which means a base program that performs a core or essential function for other applications. The software engine in the apps was found to be poorly implemented.

The company that owns Android OS, Google has been lately taking down the apps that it found malicious or worked in a different way than advertised. Going by the company’s streak, it will most probably take action and will ban most or all of the apps that were deemed fake in the study. It is also recommended that the users of antivirus apps check if the app they are using is identified as fake in the results.

  • The Secret Sauce That Makes Spotify’s Music Curation So Amazing

The Secret Sauce That Makes Spotify’s Music Curation So Amazing

Music is deemed as a social currency worldwide. Songs can depict a person, tell you about his/her tastes and reflect his/her mood. And when it comes to music, Spotify is no stranger. The Swedish music streaming application has been downloaded over 207 million times (as per Q4, 2018), and the number keeps on growing. The app launched was launched in India in February 2019, and the app gained more than 1 million users in the country after the first week of its launch. But what makes Spotify better than other music streaming applications out there? Is it the interface? The sound quality? Or is it just better pricing?

What Makes Spotify Better Than Its Competition?

Music applications like Apple Music and Last.fm have been around for a long time too. There are still a lot of users who side with apps like Saavn, Gaana and Soundcloud. But the reason why Spotify is different are the algorithms that form the basis of what the service is. Over 100 million users use Spotify’s music algorithm every month to listen to music that’s tailored for them. An Indie music fan wouldn’t be a huge fan of Electronic Music, and someone who likes Hip hop would not exactly enjoy folk music.

Spotify understands that. In 2015, the company launched its ‘Discover Weekly’ feature, which allowed users to explore a weekly playlist that’s curated by Spotify. The playlist includes soundtracks that the user might like, based on his/her listening history. Not just that, the algorithm also goes through the most recent releases for each artist you like, runs it through a user base of almost 2 billion similar playlists and adds that music to your playlist. Usually, people get used to listening to the same songs every day, but Spotify users have reported that the “Discover Weekly” feature makes listening to music a lot more fun than ever. It’s like the algorithm personally knows its users, listeners state.

The Recommendation Models That Spotify Runs On

Contrary to popular belief, Spotify implements three different Recommendation models to curate their playlists. Using these three models, it creates its own discovery engine, which its fans love.

    • Collaborative Filtering
    • Nature Language Processing
    • Audio Models

    1. Collaborative Filtering

To make it simpler, one of the first media streaming services that used this algorithm was Netflix. It analyzed a user’s rating for a specific movie and compared it with another user’s rating to find out which movie taste such users had in common. After that, it used this analysis to recommend movies to similar users. Needless to say, Netflix was hugely successful, because it “knew” what people liked and how to keep an audience hooked.

After collaborative Filtering gained popularity, many other services started using a similar model to curate content to their users. However, Spotify’s implementation is a little different from the basic “Filtering model”. It keeps track of the stream counts of every song, the number of times it has been added to a playlist, the different types of tracks in that playlist and similar tracks by the same artist.

Spotify uses Python libraries to keep track of the user’s preferences in its databases. Stored in the form of massive matrices, the service uses complex mathematical functions to match similar music tastes. Even remotely similar sounding music can appear on the list, which explains why people relate to unheard music at times.

    2. Natural Language Processing

Natural language processing (NLP) is a technique that has long been used for translating human speech to machine language. A lot of websites other than Spotify use NLP to find related text across different websites, acting upon which they can implement that newfound information on their own platform. NLP holds a very high spot in the list of algorithms that are used for mining big data.

Spotify’s NLP model extracts data from a song’s information, including its genre, artist name and album name. It then crawls the web incessantly for any blogs or articles regarding the music track and then figures out what other songs are being discussed alongside the same. It then uses this information to amaze you with a “musical” understanding, which is the foundation of the Spotify “discovery” algorithm.

    3. Audio Models

Analyzing Raw audio models is basically Spotify’s way to ensure that new tracks don’t go unnoticed. Take it this way – taking a technology similar to Facial Recognition and applying it to soundtracks is what Spotify does. It analyzes the audio data including the wavelength, time signatures, key, tempo and loudness of a music track, and then uses the same to find more tracks with similar audio signatures. This allows the music service to detect similarities between songs and therefore, it suggests those tracks to users.

Spotify may be similar to other music streaming applications, but it sets its ways apart by implementing a set of models that provide a much more personalized audio experience. The playlist will automatically start suggesting you songs once you start listening to music on Spotify. The application is available across all major application stores and is free to use. Users can upgrade to premium for improved music quality and offline listening capability.

The new Twitter Camera can be accessed from within the official application by swiping left from the home screen. It reveals a similar layout to the Facebook camera, a rival counterpart of the feature. With the new addition, users can now click a picture by tapping the shutter button on the bottom. A long press of the button will record a video, which again can be shared instantly. Another option on the bottom right reveals a ‘LIVE’ button, which, as the name suggests, allows sharing live videos. There is also a flash toggle and an option to switch cameras on the top right corner.

In the new Twitter Camera, sharing the media from the app will also look different than before. Instead of the text being on top and important elements of media hidden away; the new update will make the media stand out on its own. The text embedded in the tweet will be shown below it and the size of the tweet will also be substantially larger.

Notably, the Twitter Camera feature draws heavy inspiration from Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, which also allows similar content sharing technology. However, the latter applications have additional features like AR stickers and hands-free recording. Twitter hasn’t announced what new features it will incorporate in the future, but it may add the aforementioned functionalities in later versions of the app.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp Down For Users Around The World

Popular social networking website Facebook and its sub-services including WhatsApp and Instagram have been facing a service outage for a few hours in several regions. Hashtags labelled #WhatsAppDown, #InstagramDown and #FacebookDown have been trending on the microblogging website Twitter.

    The Social Media Outage

While the cause of the outage hasn’t been revealed, it was speculated to be a DDoS style attack. The aforementioned attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt normal traffic to a web property where multiple compromised systems, which are often infected with a Trojan computer virus, are used to target a single computer system. However, a post shared on Facebook’s official Twitter account dismissed the claims. The outage mainly affected parts of New England; the US; parts of Latin America; the UK; India; and the Philippines. Some cases of it were also reported in from Canada and Turkey.

Facebook’s advertisement section was also reported to be not functioning, and it prompted an error message when users tried to buy an advertisement set on the platform. It was also suggested that the website is weighing in on the option to return the advertiser’s money because of the issue, but no official statement on the matter has been released yet. With the desktop website of Facebook down, people also reported posts on the Instagram application not loading. The Stories function of the service also was reported to be down, as was the button to post new media.

  • Firefox Send Allows Users To Share Files Up to 2.5 GB With End-to-end Encryption

Firefox Send Allows Users To Share Files Up to 2.5 GB With End-to-end Encryption

Mozilla, the developers of the Firefox browser has introduced a service that simplifies the process of sharing large files securely over the internet. The service is called Firefox send and it originally debuted back in August 2017 as a ‘Test Pilot’ experiment. The company has announced that the service is now available for general public use.

    Firefox Send Features and Benefits

The concept behind the service is to allow users to share files electronically via a secure and simplified platform. The newly publicised Firefox send allows users to send files up to 2.5 GB in size in an end-to-end encrypted manner. Other notable services including Gmail only allows sharing files which are much smaller in size in comparison to Mozilla’s platform. Specifically, Gmail only allows sharing files that have a maximum size of 25 MB. Files greater than this size are shared via Google Drive which again takes up allotted cloud storage.

Another advantage that Mozilla send offers is automatically expiring links. The automatically expiring links can be set on the basis of two different facets. The user can either choose a period or the number of downloads before the link goes void. Users have an option of choosing between 1 to 100 number of downloads or 5 minutes to 7 days in terms of time period.
