Samsung Introduces Two 1/2 inch ISOCELL Image Sensors

Samsung announced two new 0.8-micrometer pixel image sensors. These include the 48 megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 and the 32 megapixel ISOCELL Bright GD1.  According to a senior Samsung executive, the demand for ultra-small, high-resolution image sensors are growing. As smartphones evolve to deliver new and more exciting camera experiences for users, Samsung wishes to stay in this race. This indicates that these sensors are aimed for future smartphones from the company’s table. Cameras have become an integral part of the smartphone experience. Manufacturers are aiming to innovate and research newer ways to fit as many sensors as they can into a small body. Reducing sensor size without compromising on image quality or overall camera performance seems to be on every manufacturer’s agenda.

    Features Of The Sensors

According to Samsung, the GM1 and the GD1 sensors are based on their latest pixel isolation technology. The ISOCELL Plus supposedly optimises performance especially for smaller-dimension pixels, making them the ideal solution for today’s super-resolution cameras. This technology allows the sensor to combine four pixels and merge them to one to improve the camera output in lower lighting conditions. The company claims that the GM1 and GD1 can deliver light sensitivity equivalent to that of a 1.6 micron pixel image sensor at 12 MP and 8 MP resolution, respectively.

The GD1 also gets realtime HDR support. This reportedly allows for balanced exposure, richer colour and detail when filming selfie-videos or streaming live video content even in low-light or high-contrast environments. This might be a great thing for people who use their front cameras a lot. Both these sensors will go into mass production in the fourth quarter of this year. Samsung has already showed an under display camera they have been working on for their future phones. Although it seems unlikely that they will use these sensors for their new technology which is still at a very early stage. But it will be interesting to see how the sensors are used by the company.

  • 5 Guidelines For Better Pictures With Your Smartphone Camera

5 Guidelines For Better Pictures With Your Smartphone Camera

Smartphones have improved in leaps and bounds over the past few years and so have their cameras. With cameras getting better by the day, customers are shifting to these handy devices for their photographic needs instead of lugging around a difficult to use DSLR. This means learning how to use your smartphone camera and using it to the fullest. A phone camera these days has a lot of features for customisation which can make your images better. Let’s discuss five tips that can make your images better instantly.

    Use HDR Mode

The HDR mode is an extremely useful when it comes to phone photography. More often than not, you will find yourself shooting subjects with a strong backlight and this makes the subject dark as the camera exposes for the highlights. If you expose for the shadows then the highlights get burnt. How to do you find a solution? The phone manufacturers have long added a feature that can bring out the shadows and tone down the highlights of these images. Using the HDR mode, the phone shoots three or more images in different exposures. One with the mid-tones properly exposed, one with the highlights properly exposed and one with the shadows properly exposed. Then the phone’s algorithm joins all the three photos to create an evenly exposed image with both shadows and highlights intact.

    Set Exposure For The Highlights

If you do not wish to use the HDR mode or do not have the HDR mode in your smartphone camera, which by the way is extremely rare, you can expose your images for the highlights. This has to be done because if you lose the highlight details, you cannot get it back in post production. But more often than not, you can get the details in the shadow areas back in post processing. You can use Snapseed to adjust shadows and highlights after shooting.

    Use Manual

Manual mode is amazing. If you have a good understanding of photography and know how to use shutter speed, aperture and ISO then you can use the manual mode in your smartphone camera. You get a better control over the exposure of your images. Even in DSLRs, using the manual mode gives you better control. If you have enough time to frame and compose your shots, then use the manual mode.

    Manual Mode

    Use 4:3 aspect ratio

Many might not know this, but your phone’s sensor is rectangular. Shooting in a 4:3 aspect ratio gives you the best resolution images because it uses the maximum number of pixels in your smartphone camera. Shooting in 16:9 or 19:9 mode might look pretty on a large screen device, but it reduces the megapixel count. You can test this out by shooting the same image in both aspect ratios and look at them on your computer monitor to see the difference!

Don’t use flash when shooting a landscape image

Many a times, you will see people shooting images of the beach or any other wide landscape at night using the phone’s flash. The phone’s flash is hardly powerful enough to illuminate a subject just a few feet away. It is not possible to use the phone’s flash to illuminate kilometres of vista. So, it won’t make a difference even if you use a phone flash since it’s throw is extremely limited.

  • LG’s New Patent Hints At A Notch-Less Phone

LG’s New Patent Hints At A Notch-Less Phone

The race to have notch-less screens is on and everyone is trying different ways to find the right mix of usability and productivity while not compromising on the looks. LG has reportedly filed patents for a new phone that may have three or four cameras on the back and a notch-less design. While there is a very thin forehead to the phone which houses the cameras just like the G6, the chin and forehead are both comparatively thinner.

    Phones Without Borders

Mi Mix was one of the first phones to try to eliminate the bezels and Oppo and Vivo soon followed. Oppo Find X employed a sliding camera while Vivo NEX had a pop-up selfie camera. The Mi Mix 3, which saw it’s launch recently, features a sliding back which is mechanical and not electronic. With its sliding camera, the Mi Mix 3 has a 93 % screen-to-body ratio.

The images show that a fingerprint sensor will still be available in the phone. It seems like LG is not quite ready to embrace the in display fingerprint just yet. Samsung on the other hand always steers clear of the whole notch saga. They have made a different identity for themselves with the curved display which they call the infinity display. It has, on several occasions, mocked Google as well as Apple for their notches and are definitely taking a different route.

Samsung has also said that they are working on an under-display front facing camera to avoid the notch altogether. It is rumoured that the Samsung Galaxy A8s may feature the under- display camera. LG’s design patents suggest three different designs with each one having more rounded corners than the last. It will be interesting to see if LG’s old school design without the notch fares well with the customers or not!

  • Panasonic Announces First 8K Camera with Organic Sensor

Panasonic Announces First 8K Camera with Organic Sensor

Panasonic introduced an 8K camera in February, this year and recently an estimated date has been declared by the company for it’s launch. The 8K Multipurpose Camera AK – SHB 810 is a compact, lightweight, box – type camera that uses a PL lens mount. It features the world’s first organic sensor and arrives seven years after the technology was patented. The camera can shoot 8K / 4K / HD videos and shoots 8K at 60 fps.

    The 8K Future

Panasonic is aiming to accommodate a wide range of applications for broadcasting and video production. The company has announced it’s future plans till 2020. They wish to continue to develop 4K / 8K devices / systems. These systems can withstand actual operation, support high image quality of broadcast production and efficiency of broadcasting services. They can also contribute to the development of the broadcasting industry. Panasonic had released another 8K Super Hi-Vision recorder, the AJ – ZS 0580 last year.

Panasonic explains what an organic sensor is by stating that the sensor ‘realises a laminated structure in which an electric charge accumulation part is arranged in a lower layer by using an organic thin film for a photoelectric conversion part.’ The camera also boasts of other features such as prevention of skew distortion and flash band using a global shutter. This shutter simultaneously exposes all the pixels thus reducing the chance of any skew.

They further informed that the organic sensors can change the sensitivity by controlling the voltage applied to the organic thin film. This acts as a constantly changing virtual ND filter so to speak. Panasonic has also said that the global shutter enables photographers to not worry about random flashes from creating partial bright bands in a video. The 8K multi-purpose camera will be available in the fall of 2019.

  • Apple Accused Of Unpaid Chip Royalties By Qualcomm

Apple Accused Of Unpaid Chip Royalties By Qualcomm

Apple and Qualcomm are at it again. Apple recently had accused Qualcomm of unfair patent licensing practices and Qualcomm has in turn accused Apple of patent infringement. Qualcomm revealed the amount of unpaid royalties by Apple in a hearing. The hearing was of one of the cases in a Federal court in San Diego. Apple however, have disputes about the amount. At this moment, the companies are involved in about 100 legal proceedings around the world. Qualcomm wishes 56 patents to be dropped and wants to follow the licensing dispute between the two companies instead. According to Qualcomm, Apple has $7 billion in unpaid chip royalty payments.

    Apple’s Reply

Apple has, in a statement, said that for many years Qualcomm has unfairly insisted on charging royalties for technologies they have nothing to do with.  The company has also accused Qualcomm stating that the more Apple innovates with unique features for phones, the more money Qualcomm collects. Apple claims that this makes it more expensive to fund these innovations. Apple has accused Qualcomm of building its business on older, legacy, standards. They claim that Qualcomm has reinforced its dominance through exclusionary tactics and excessive royalties. The smartphone giant also said that the latter insists on charging Apple at least five times more in payments. This is in comparison to all the other cellular patent licensors they have agreements with combined.

A U.S. International Trade Commission administrative law judge had, in September, ruled in favour of Qualcomm, stating that Apple had infringed on a power saving patent to extend battery life in mobile devices. The judge had also said that this will not hinder Apple from selling their phones in the US. Apple also said that Qualcomm is withholding nearly $1 Billion in payments from Apple as ‘retaliation for responding truthfully to law enforcement agencies investigating them’.

  • PUBG Mobile: Tips And Tricks To Become An Ace Player

PUBG Mobile: Tips And Tricks To Become An Ace Player

PUBG is a worldwide phenomenon and the number of players is still growing. In this highly competitive multiplayer battle royale game, a hundred players are dropped into an area with no weapons whatsoever. The last man standing ( or the last team ) emerges as the winner. There are different levels or Seasons that judges the player’s rankings. These are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Crown, Ace and Conqueror. The top 500 players in a server are titled Conqueror. Becoming an Ace itself is very difficult and requires a lot of man hours. But if you play smart and use a few tricks you can be a notch above the rest and emerge victorious in a lot of matches. We share the tips and tricks that we have learnt in the over 500 games of PUBG we played over two seasons and reached Ace every time.

    Know Where To Land

Landing is everything. Knowing the best places to land can be a win or lose decision. There are certain hot spots on the maps that are always full of other people as these areas usually spawn better items. However landing here and getting those items might not always win you a game. There are several instances of people getting a sniper and 8x scope just upon landing only to be killed by a shotgun wielding enemy. If you are great at fighting with any gun or any other weapon then and only then land in places like this.

Places like Pochinki, Yasnaya Polyana, Military Base in Erangel, Los Leones, El Pozo in Miramar and Kampong, Cave and Bootcamp in Sanhok are very hot and sees a lot of traffic. In case you are interested in climbing the season ladder then make sure to avoid these areas. Only make risky plays when you have a Tier protection.

    How To Parachute

The first important step to win games is to know when to pick your battles. Parachuting in first to a place makes a lot of difference as one can start eliminating enemies with a car or even a single shotgun if they can pick it up before the enemy does. There is a great secret on how to start from the same point, in the same time, but reach the ground faster. When guiding the parachute make sure you are flying diagonally. pull your finger to the top left or top right side of the controller circle and fly at a slight angle. This increases the fling speed and helps you land faster.

    Knowing Your Strength

Just like most games, this game also has certain player roles. These are Camper, Gunslinger, Sniper, Shotgun Lover and Lazy Bum. Find your play style and stick to it. If you like to go head on to a fight and are good at it, then do that and make sure you don’t die. Use smokes and grenades when charging into a house. If you like to avoid fights until the very end when there are 10 or so people alive, then find safe areas and camp in a house or in the grass etc. Finding your strengths and playing to it will win you a lot of games.

    Weapons To Use

There are a lot of different weapons that once can pick up from the different houses in PUBG. Some have a better range, some have better spread, some recoil less and some may reload faster than the other. One needs to adapt to the game when choosing weapons. If you are storming a house then you need a shotgun or a weapon with a close range like an UZI or a pistol. If you are shooting enemies across a field, or a considerable distance away, then using a sniper or an M416 is recommended. The scope, Muzzle, Mag and Foregrip also play a major role in deciding your shot accuracy. Read about each and every weapon in the ‘Weapons’ tab in PUBG mobile and you will slowly get the hang of it.

    Items To Pick Up

There is a very limited space in your backpack. Depending on the level of the backpack, you will quickly run out of space if you have a ton of things loaded in it. If you are picking up a Gas can, fill up your vehicle as soon as you can to free up space. Many items take up more space than other items so chose what you wish to carry wisely. If you are using a combination of an SMG and a long range rifle, you probably won’t need the pistol and it’s bullets.

Discard old bullets if you change guns as those take up space. Pick up guns that have different characteristics. Many a times I have seen people carrying two M416 guns because they feel that that is the best and is quite rare. Even if it is a rare item, don’t carry two of the same guns.

    Advanced Tips

    Peeking

This is an extremely good feature and most beginners do not use it. In a house to house combat leqaning or peeking from a window will give you a view of your enemy without fully exposing yourself to gunshots. When under fire, this will help you to just peek your head out and not your entire body. You are still prone to headshots or your helmet being completely obliterated, but the chance of getting hit reduces significantly.

    Staying Outside The First Circle

Staying outside the first circle hardly reduces much health. You can stay outside the first circle and search houses without bearing too much damage. You can do that by using bandages and health packs for a long time without losing out on much. There will be lesser enemies and you can loot houses in peace.

    Reload Every Time You Disengage

Many of the deaths occur because a player forgets to reload. When taking fire from an enemy suddenly if you need to reload, that can mean death or at least damaging your bulletproof vest or helmet. The best practice is to reload everytime you get a chance. In between shots, even if you get a few seconds, make sure to reload.

    Using The Flare Gun

Using the flare gun can be a great way to gain an edge over your enemies in PUBG. Be it an armoured car drop or a gun drop. Knowing when and where to use a flare gun is crucial. If you get it early on in the game, and you have landed in an area inside the circle with lesser number of enemies, then use it inside the circle itself. In case there are a lot of enemies still alive and nearby, go outside the circle and settle for the armoured vehicle. If you are in the military base and the circle is on the other side of the map, having the armoured vehicle is also useful as the bridges might be camped.

Climb On The Roof Of A Building

Some buildings with balconies let you climb on the roof by jumping on top of the door. This is a great way to stay hidden if you are alone and your teammates have died. Or even if you have a sniper rifle and want to get a great vantage point without anyone noticing you.

Zig Zag And Jump When Taking Fire

When pushing into a safe zone circle, there is a chance that enemies might shoot from inside the zone. Try to zig zag and jump when running head on into enemies. It makes you a difficult target to shoot at.

    Frying Pan

The frying pan is bulletproof. It can be extremely useful to knock someone out cold if they are very close to you.

So go ahead, follow these tips and be the next ace! Do let us know in the comment section below, about how these tips and tricks helped you.

  • Leica M10- D: A Digital Camera Without A Screen

    Leica M10- D: A Digital Camera Without A Screen

Leica recently announced their latest version of the M10 and the camera does not have a screen! It is a digital camera with no screen to view your photos. For someone who has shot in film cameras, it will feel like a homecoming as the rangefinder has no clutter – just two dials on top, a shutter button and a dial at the back. The design shouts of the typical Leica trademark. The camera is controlled using the Leica Fotos app. The app works on both Android and iOS devices. It uses Wi-Fi to connect to the app.

The 24-megapixel full-frame sensor camera is matte black in colour and looks like a film rangefinder to a tee. The M10- D also features the lever that film cameras use, to cock the film. Even though this lever does not do anything functional, it is a good place to rest your finger while shooting. The camera has dials to adjust Shutter speed and ISO and also features a few customisable buttons but has very little otherwise. The lens has aperture and focus rings and the camera also features an optical viewfinder.

    Purpose Of The Camera

Leica has said, the camera was built to provide the convenience of shooting digital without the distractions of the same. One can easily avoid a common phenomenon in photography known as ‘chimping’ with this camera. Chimping is the practice of immediately looking at the photograph on the screen after shooting on a digital camera. Moments play a big role when shooting street photography. Chimping can cause a photographer to miss out on images from the action that is taking place in front of him or her. The company has previously released cameras without screens, like the Leica M- D. But this is the first camera that features Wi-Fi connectivity.

While one needs to get used to using the M10- D , it seems like a great idea to remove unnecessary distractions! The app is quite clean, easy to use and can help you look at your images on the go instead of during a shoot. The Leica M10-D costs $7,995 and is available on the Leica USA website.

  • Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro Launched

    Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro Launched

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro saw it’s launch in China a couple of weeks back. It was recently launched in Taiwan which is it’s first release outside China. In China, the phone is called the Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is an upgraded version of the Mi 8 with an in-display fingerprint sensor and looks eerily similar to the iPhone X.

    Specifications

According to the company, the Mi 8 Pro has increased the unlocking speed by 29 percent and the unlocking success rate by 8.8 percent compared to the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. This has reportedly been done through tweaks in the algorithm. The phone is available in 8 GB RAM and 128 GB variant as well as a 6 GB RAM and 128 GB variant. It features a 6.21-inch Super AMOLED 2248 x 1080 px display with an aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and a notch. The phone draws its power from a Snapdragon 845 SoC and has dual rear cameras. The two lenses include 2 MP wide angle lens and a 12 MP telephoto lens. The front camera is a 20 MP sensor. The phone also features an infrared based face unlock system and a 3,000 mAh battery. It runs on MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The phone also has the usual sensors which include Gyroscope, Multi touch, Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor, G (Gravity) Sensor, Finger print sensor, Accelerometer and Compass.

The phone is available in two different black colours – transparent black and meteorite black. It is also available in pink and yellow variants. The company may launch the phone in several other countries and India might be one of them. However, with lower end specs like a 12 MP camera and a 3,000 mAh battery it might be a hard sell in such a price sensitive market.  The phone will be available online via Xiaomi Mall and on Mi Store for a price of  NT$15,999 ($516).

  • Samsung To Launch Snapdragon 710 Mid-Range Smartphone

Samsung To Launch Snapdragon 710 Mid-Range Smartphone

Qualcomm recently unveiled the Snapdragon 675 as manufacturers start to focus on mid range smartphones. Samsung, according to a tweet by an industry insider, will reportedly unveil a mid-range phone which will feature a Snapdragon 710 chipset. The company has used the 660 chipset before but never a 710. If they do end up using it, this phone will be Samsung’s most expensive mid-range smartphone yet. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 675 features an Adreno 612 GPU while the 710 has an Adreno 616 GPU.  There are a lot of similarities in the two chipsets. This includes support for Quick Charge 4+, Bluetooth 5.0 and a Hexagon 685 Digital Signal Processor.

Samsung has been trying to focus on the mid-range segment in India and recently launched the A9. The upcoming smartphone might be a great competitor to Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei and Honor brands that are doing well in the market. Rivals including the Oppo R17 Pro, Vivo Z3, Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and many others use this chipset in their phones already. The phone may see it’s launch in India first. It might then see it’s introduction to other markets. Speculations also suggest that the phone might bear the name A10 following the Galaxy A9 which saw it’s launch in October this year.

The phone will probably cost more than Samsung’s A9 but cheaper than it’s flagship phones. There is no information regarding the features of the phone in terms of RAM or display. The phone will run on Android 9 Pie straight out of the box and might have a 3,000 mAh battery. It is also speculated that the new phone will have a 19.5:9 aspect ratio display. Samsung currently uses a 18.5:9 aspect ratio. If the launch date is set for January, there might be an announcement for the phone in December.

It will also have new weapons such as grenades and guns, new vehicles including the Rony pick-up truck, better matchmaking between players and registration for a Crew Challenge Tournament.

    New Update Features

The Halloween theme will bing new cosmetic items to the game. Dynamic weather will add overcast weather. There will be a first person perspective inside vehicles as well. Reports also say that in the new update, one can build small tower like structures anywhere. Dancing grenades and Landmine traps are also being added to make the game interesting.

A new car called “Rony” will now feature in the Sanhok map. A new AR rifle – QBU (uses 5.56 ammo) has been added to the existing arsenal of AR rifles and PUBG promises to have lesser number of bots in the update. The most interesting feature however still remains the Night Mode. PUBG in itself is a difficult game to play, more so on a mobile phone. It will be even more difficult to look for enemies in the night.

It will also supposedly add new environmental details such as new buildings, covers and trees to make the maps and the overall gaming experience more immersive. The new update will arrive on 25th October. There is a leaked version of the new update already available online but we suggest that you wait for the official update to avoid any mishaps.

  • Huawei Plans To Manufacture Mobile Phones In India

Huawei Plans To Manufacture Mobile Phones In India

Many smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and OnePlus have already set up their manufacturing processes in India. Manufacturers are increasingly preferring India as a manufacturing hub over China because of the advantages in terms of labour and government’s favourability. Huawei, the $150 billion Chinese giant, has said to a news website that they intend to begin manufacturing phones in India as early as next year. They have already set up plans to open 1000 storefronts all across the country to gauge the market.

    Huawei’s Make In India

The company’s VP has informed that they look at India strategically. They now intend to grow their presence through the launch of devices in the mid and premium end of the market. Manufacturing in India reduces the price of the smartphones for the Indian market drastically. Currently there is a 20% import duty levied on smartphones that will be negated once they are manufactured locally. This is specially important for a price sensitive market. In 2017, Huawei accounted 153 million in global smartphone sales. The company also stated that they plan to manufacture the phones with their partner Flex who has a factory in Chennai. This in turn will generate new jobs and will help India as well in the long run.

The company representative has also said that apart from China, they have seen a significant growth across many different markets including Europe. Xiaomi is currently the largest phone manufacturer in India. They buy their devices from Foxconn’s India unit. India is one of the most lucrative smartphone markets and has immense potential for growth. Huawei however is the largest phone manufacturer in China, which is the world’s biggest smartphone market. The company has also stated that they plan to import other products such as smartwatches and laptops for now. They have also indicated that they may manufacture these locally as well, once they start gaining popularity.
