AT&T To Cancel All Galaxy Fold Pre Orders

Samsung’s premier foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold is highly awaited by customers who preordered the device back in the month of April. The smartphone has been a centre of buzz being the first foldable device from the company in the market. However, when the handset started breaking for some reviewers across the globe, the company had something to be worried about. Previously, the company had announced that the Galaxy Fold units will be shipped out to customers in the month of June, but since then, no update has been provided by the concerned authorities. In the light of the event, American telecommunications conglomerate, AT&T has cancelled pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold smartphone.

    Samsung Galaxy Fold AT&T

All the customers who pre-ordered the $1,980 Galaxy Fold device received notices from AT&T stating that their order has been cancelled. Even though customers would again be able to place orders when Samsung announces an official launch date, those who were waiting eagerly for the rollout of the device will be quite disappointed about this.

The email from AT&T clearly informs that the order is only being cancelled because Samsung delayed the launch of the Galaxy Fold, clearing all responsibilities from its side. As compensation, the company also provided a US$ 100 AT&T Promotional Card to the customers who pre-ordered the device, which will be delivered within 60 days. Any funds held on to the customer’s card will be released immediately as stated by the company.

The Galaxy Fold faced issues with its screen and hinge in the month of April 2019. Some reviewers inadvertently peeled off a protective covering (which acted as an adhesive), leading to screen breakage. Others had issues arising because of the material (dust and debris) that entered the gap in the phone’s hinge. Even though the company previously claimed that it has successfully eliminated all the problems with the device, a statement regarding the launch date is still awaited.

Samsung To Unveil New Portable T7 Plus SSD

Samsung has developed a new external Solid State Drive (SSD), T7 Plus portable SSD, which is the successor to the T5 SSD. The company had first introduced portable SSD T5 back in 2017. The storage hardware was available in four different variants, namely 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, and four colour variations, ocean blue, deep black, metallic red, and rose gold. The Korean company will announce a new SSD in the same T-series of SSD, according to a trademark application. Samsung

Samsung Electronics on 12th June 2019 applied for the name Samsung Portable SSD T7 Plus at the Intellectual Property Office in Great Britain. The trademark falls under the Class 9 category carrying the description of a ‘solid state drive; data storage device.’ The tech giant has not given out any finer details regarding the specifications of the new storage device. However, it can be gathered that the external SSD probably is similar to the T5 but with performance improvements across the board.

    Samsung

The T7 portable SSD, as the name suggests is most likely a made on a streamlined, light and compact chassis. Furthermore, features such as capable storage capacity and password protection will likely be available, being the norm. Alongside this upcoming official announcement, Samsung unveiled a Portable SSD X5, a first of its kind SSD that is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and NVMe that makes data transfer even quicker. This portable SSD is noticeably larger, however, with a heftier price tag than the T5.

It is still uncertain exactly when Samsung’s Portable SSD T7 Plus will be announced. The upcoming storage device will probably be a successor to T5 rather than the X5 SSD. Samsung will probably announce the T7 in the IFA (The Internationale Funkausstellung), an annual consumer electronics and home appliances exhibition in Berlin. The event takes place from the 6th to the 11th of September.

Whatsapp To Take Legal Action Against Users Who Send Too Many Messages

Whatsapp is widely regarded as one of the most widely used Instant messaging applications in the world. Launched in the year 2009, the application was later acquired by social media giant, Facebook in the year 2014. As per latest reports, Whatsapp will start taking legal action against users who have a habit of sending way too many messages. This step is being taken to curb the amount of fake news that is being spread via the application.

    WhatsApp Samsung

Previously, the company owned rights to ban users if the terms and condition policy was violated in any manner. However, incidents in the past have indicated that people tend to act instinctively upon receiving news via the application. In a survey, it was discovered that almost 52 percent of respondents received news and stories via WhatsApp. The content shared via the application has supposedly led to murders, extortions and even unwanted uprisings amongst the inhabitants of the country.

The company had previously introduced a “forwarded” tag to messages which had been forwarded multiple times. However, 7 December 2019 onwards, any user who indulges in “bulk or automated WhatsApp messaging” can be sued, the company states. Whatsapp states that the sole motive of the application was to act as a direct link between people and organizations (via the Business app), hence any kind of spam will not be tolerated. This step will enable the organization to assert direct control over its users, even if it concerns data that is solely accessible by the company itself.

The update can be seen on Whatsapp’s page under “unauthorised usage of WhatsApp”, which clearly states that the Facebook-owned instant messaging application is committed to developing its structure around the private nature of data transmission. Especially during elections, a rogue message forwarded by a group of people can spark controversies and biased opinions. This decision by the American company will serve as an effective check on people who tend to forward/send messages in bulk amounts.

  • MIT Develops Algorithm To Help Robots Predict Human Movements

MIT Develops Algorithm To Help Robots Predict Human Movements

Robots and humans are capable of functioning in close proximity to each other. For instance, in factories, robots assemble the moving parts of a machine, while the human workforce is responsible for transporting different parts between workstations. However, some hindrances might lead to unexpected slowdowns, consequently reducing the efficiency of the whole system. Hence, researchers at MIT have designed an algorithm that can predict where humans will go next.

In the year 2018, MIT researchers and BMW automobiles were testing ways where humans and robots could collaborate to speed up car assemblies. In such an instance, robots were programmed to pause momentarily whenever a human passes close by. However, it was noted that the robots would literally freeze and held their state for a long time instead of resuming their functions. Such unnecessary pauses would translate to a huge loss in efficiency. The researchers at MIT came up with a solution for the same.

    Humans And Robots

The team discovered that the major problem lies in the robot’s trajectory alignment algorithms. The pre-fed algorithms could accurately predict a human’s future movements, but the major limitation resided in its ability to predict how long would a person take to move to any point in the predicted path. A new algorithm was developed by the MIT research team which anticipates the timing of a person’s motion in addition to guessing his/her movements.  When the algorithm was applied, it was derived that the robot became much more responsive than before. Instead of freezing in place when someone walked by, the robot simply rolled out of the way and resumed later.

Julie Shah, a member of the team stated that the algorithm mimics human motion to such an extent that the robot can understand and monitor pauses in natural movement. The results of the latest studies and research will be presented at the Robotics: Science and Systems conference in Germany.

iPhone 11 To Feature Google Pixel Like Night Mode

Apple, one of the most popular smartphone brands in the world is preparing for the launch of its latest handsets to the global audience. The American company is reported to release its newest generation of flagship devices (iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max and iPhone 11R) in September 2019. Various leaks online have been risen up, showcasing numerous renders, specifications, and features before the launch of the upcoming iPhones. A new report points at the Apple iPhones sporting a Google Pixel like Night Sight camera feature.

    iPhone

According to newly leaked information, the upcoming smartphones will have a dedicated ‘night mode’ camera feature. Night Mode helps the camera capture better pictures in environments that are not optimally illuminated. The leak reports that the feature can be manually toggled by the user but the device will also be able to automatically activate by detecting light density. This report is yet to be confirmed, however, looking at the adoption rate of other companies it is a feature Apple would probably incorporate in its new generation iPhone.

Apple’s latest iPhones have been seen in renders sporting a triple camera module setup, while the iPhone 11R may receive a dual camera sensor at the back. Hence, a camera mode for better low-light photography may not be far off. Google and Huawei have arguably one of the better results with the night mode feature, but the report also claims Apple’s version of the aforementioned feature will outperform the competition.

Huawei Cancels MateBook X And E Over US Trade Ban

Huawei had unveiled its new series of laptops dubbed the MateBook at the CES Asia and MWC in 2019. However, the onset of the US trade ban that has led to the cancellation of the new laptop lineup. The news arrives after Huawei faced the implications of being placed in the US Entity List (National Security Threat List), this has made the company unable to supply the PC. The CEO of the Chinese tech giant called the current string of events “unfortunate” and the availability of the laptop is dependent on “how long the Entity List will be there.”

    Huawei

Huawei had previously announced plans for a MateBook X and E series laptop. The higher specced X series were to be equipped with Intel Core series chipsets while the E series were to sport ARM architecture based Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 with an affordable price tag. Both laptops would have run on the Windows 10 OS but are still highly unlikely to ship globally. The aftermath of the US and China trade wars are still uncertain with China preparing its own retaliation against the US.

The US President, Donald Trump had his administration pass an executive order on May claiming Huawei as a threat to national security. This implies that the US companies are barred from collaborating with the corporation that is designated threats to the US. Huawei was singled out as the tensions started rising between the trade of the US and China. Any multi-national corporation placed in the Entity List will have its business in the US severely restrictive. The company can no longer buy or utilize US tech with Governments approval.

Huawei, after the ban, could no longer work with any software or hardware that were based in the US. This led to companies like Intel (CPU chipsets), Google (Android OS), ARM (Smartphone Chipset Architecture), Wi-Fi Alliance and many more to stop all business related ventures with the accused company. Since Huawei no longer has access to any of the aforementioned companies’ technology and software, it is practically impossible to hold a business model under such restrictions.

Additionally, the Commerce Department of the US has left a 90-day window for Huawei to practice with a temporary general license. This, in turn, shall allow the company to complete all necessary and on-going contracts and agreements that are legally binding towards it. However, a report from China has since disputed that the MateBook will supposedly launch in July running Windows OS from Microsoft.

  • Samsung Patents Smartphone With 3D Curved Display

Samsung Patents Smartphone With 3D Curved Display

Smartphone brands are constantly experimenting new device designs to improve user functionality. Along the same lines, South Korean company Samsung seems to be working on a device with a screen that curves towards the edges. Although smartphones with 3D curved glass have been around for quite some time now, the patented design has some notably unique aspects.

    About The Patent

    Samsung curved smartphone

The patent regarding the “curved-screen device” was filed with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) by Samsung towards the latter half of the year 2018. It exhibits an ‘Electronic device with full display’ i.e a smartphone with an edge to edge display. Furthermore, the camera and additional sensors are placed under the display of the smartphone. A similar technology was previously shown off by Chinese brands Xiaomi and Oppo. The patent was filed on the behalf of both USA and Korea, which was published on June 6, 2019.

Images included in the patent exhibit slightly curved shape of the device. The central section of the display is rendered as a flat surface, whereas the surrounding modules have a 3D curved design. The framework of the Samsung device is equally angled to the display at all points, which implies that the handset will have increased resistance to accidental drops. Notably, the patent includes two different device models: one with a thinner frame and the other with a noticeably thicker and wider frame than its counterpart.

    Samsung curved smartphone

As per renders, the back panel of the device seems to be fabricated out of glass. If the company decides to use a metal housing for such a device, the casing can double up as an antenna for the smartphone. However, if the company decides to incorporate a glass housing, wireless charging can be made possible in the Samsung device. The interesting fact about the handset design is the presence of a similar curvature on the back. Such a curvature would mean that the device is slimmer towards the sides than the middle. As previously mentioned, the patent states that such a design would improve the user’s grip on the device.

Regarding features, Samsung’s patent images point towards the presence of multiple rear camera sensors, that are placed in a vertical arrangement. As mentioned before, the front camera and sensors (such as the proximity sensor, flood illuminator) will be placed beneath the display. The right side of the device accommodates a single key, which indicates that the volume rockers may be capacitative. Overall, the curved smartphone design is a fresh take on compact yet attractive devices. Since the technology required to manufacture such a device wholly exists in the present day, Samsung may soon reveal more details about this concept.

  • Google Stadia Will Need A 20Mbps Connection For 1080p Gaming

Google Stadia Will Need A 20Mbps Connection For 1080p Gaming

Earlier this year, Google surprised the world by unveiling a dedicated gaming platform dubbed Stadia. The platform will allow users to play high end games on max visual settings without shelling out money for buying new high end hardware. Any device that can run Chrome browser can be used to play the said high end games with the help of Stadia services. Talking about the functionality of the service, the computing power required to run graphics intensive games will take place remotely in Google’s data centres which will be streamed directly on to the Chrome browser running on the user’s machine. Even though Google has done away with the need for high end processing power with Stadia, the dependence on high speed remains. In fact with the new service, not only is the essential game data transferred over the internet, the HD game stream itself is transmitted online.

In order to make sure, the users are able to smoothly play games on Stadia, Google has revealed minimum internet speeds required to stream games in different video quality. The data sheet is attached below:

To enjoy games in the highest available video quality and 5.1 surround sound, it requires an internet connection with 35 Mbps transfer speeds. According to data collected by contributors on Speedtest, the average download speed in the United States was higher than 35 Mbps in the year 2018. Therefore, the maximum number of users hailing from the country can use the Stadia service at its maximum available quality. However, in countries like India, where the internet quality is not at par with some of the developed countries, users might be limited to using the service at 720p or 1080p quality.

As mentioned above, Zomato has successfully tested food delivery via a drone. The news arrives a few months after the company acquired the Indian drone startup called TechEagle. In the blog post, it is claimed the teams of both companies worked together for the test. The drone covered a distance of 5kms in a time period of 10 minutes; with a peak speed of 80kmph while carrying a payload of 5kgs. As it was a non-commercial delivery, it is not known where the drone dropped off the package. According to Zomato, when the service is ready, the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) will pick up the food package from the restaurant hub; and drop the package at a customer hub, which will be a landing station close to dense communities. To fly back, the drone will use a mix of various flight modes to navigate to the dispatch site.

Pixel 4 Design Revealed By Google

Google is expected to launch the next generation of its flagship smartphone lineup, known as the Google Pixel in the following months. Going by the company’s track record in the past, the official announcement may take place in the month of October. While still a few months away from the unveiling, a popular gadget tipster leaked the design of the upcoming Pixel 4 smartphone a few days ago. Now, in what could be called an unpredictable move, Google has put an end to all speculations and rumours by posting a picture on microblogging website Twitter confirming the design of the Pixel 4 series.

    Google Pixel 4 Design

As mentioned above, Google has confirmed the design of its upcoming smartphones, allegedly called the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. While the images only showcase what the rear of the devices will look like, it seems to be quite the change from their predecessors, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. It has been revealed that the handsets will utilise a square camera housing similar to the rumoured iPhone XI. The upcoming Google smartphones will have a dual camera setup; which may be comprised of a primary lens, a wide angle lens and an additional spectral sensor which handles light flicker while recording video.
