Google revealed earlier this week that 71.6% of Android users are still using the pre-Lollipop version of the OS. The divisions are as follows: 36.6% of devices are still running Android 4.4 KitKat, while a 26.9% of users are still running various versions of Jelly Bean. While the latter was released in 2012 and hasn’t seen an update since October 2013, the former first arrived two years ago.
As for iOS users, a huge 70% of them are running iOS 9 which came out only in September this year. Additionally, iOS 8 is being used to run about 92% Apple devices, an OS released not more than 16 months ago.

After 15 months of its release, KitKat has been running on 40% of the Android devices. But Android Lollipop, which has been released 3 months back, has been running on only 2% of the Android devices.
Google has updated its official version-by-version chart which displays the amount of Android market shares each release has. Android 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 (JellyBean) has the highest market share, with 44.5%, while the Android 4.4 (KitKat) is behind with 39.7%. The latest update, Android 5.0 (Lollipop) has managed to engage only 2% of its total users.
Android Lollipop is one of the most significant releases from Google yet. It gave a redesigned look to Android that was long overdue. It also brought a barrage of new features including extended battery life. But even with such arduous effort that Google put into its latest mobile OS, it hasn’t found a lot of takers in the market.
