  • Nubia Patent Suggests A Flexible Smartphone Screen With Dual Notch

Nubia Patent Suggests A Flexible Smartphone Screen With Dual Notch

Nubia last created waves when the company unveiled its wearable smartphone, which has a bendable display. Known as the Nubia Alpha, it has a 4-inch flexible display and can be worn on the wrist similar to a smartwatch. The company has also launched some distinctively powerful gaming smartphones in the past, including the Nubia Red Magic. A recently published patent reveals that the Chinese technology company is also working on a flexible smartphone, which will supposedly have a dual-notch design.

    About The Patent

Previously, a smartphone with a bottom notch was patented by Xiaomi. The device had both the front cameras housed in the bottom notch and had a high screen-to-body ratio. However, the design patent granted to Nubia is a bit different. The overall patent consists of two different designs. Both the designs were filed in the month of March 2018 and were published by the Global Design Database of the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) on April 12, 2019.

    Nubia Flexible Smartphone Design

The design patent contains a total of 16 images, which are quite similar to each other. All of them show different variants of the Nubia flexible smartphone display. The screen depicted in the patent has an elongated design, which may lead to a taller smartphone. Eight of the 16 variants have 2 notch designs: one on the top and the other on the bottom of the display. The first four of the dual-notch designs exhibit a centrally placed notch on both the ends, whereas the other four models have a notch which are placed away from the central axis of the smartphone, albeit symmetrically. The notch designs that are depicted in the pictures have a variety of shapes, including a U-shaped notch, a V-shaped notch, a semicircular notch and a fourth trapezium-shaped notch.

The other eight models also depict a foldable screen, but with a significantly different notch design. Six of the eight designs have a dual-notch design, with both the notch designs placed next to each other. The designs use a combination of the previously mentioned notch shapes to maximize the screen-to-body ratio. Out of the sixteen models, only two have a single notch which can house a single front camera.

Since the ZTE subsidiary has been working on flexible screens for a long time now, a Nubia flexible smartphone featuring the dual notch design might make its way into the market in the not-so-distant future. Moreover, the futuristic design may push Nubia towards the big leagues, where it can compete with the likes of other foldable smartphone brands such as Samsung and Huawei.

It is not clear what the brand will showcase at the event, but it may be the Nubia Alpha shown off at IFA last year. It may be that the device is an entirely new product altogether which we currently don’t know much about. There hasn’t really been a leak for a foldable smartphone Nubia is working on, so it may be only the Alpha at the event.

Nubia X Launched With Dual Display And Dual Fingerprint Sensor

Nubia has launched the Nubia X at an event held in China and the phone is every bit unique. The Nubia X has two displays, two fingerprint sensors and does not have a front facing camera. That’s right, the company eliminated the front-facing camera to ensure a bezel-less display. However, they do have a solution for the same. The smartphone has been launched at a price of CNY 3,299.

    Dual Display

The Nubia X sports a 6.26 inch 2280 x 1080 px resolution primary display, on the front. The display has a 19:9 aspect ratio and is curved. Despite having a very thin forehead and chin, the device sports a 93.6% screen-to-body ratio. On the back, it has a 5.1 inch 1520 x 720 px  secondary display. The company claims that the display can be used for HD selfies, wallpapers, custom signatures, dynamic pictures and advanced controls for high quality gaming.

As far as the lack of a front-facing camera, the Nubia makes up for it by having a display on its back as well.  This helps the user to utilise the main, dual camera setup to click ‘high quality’ selfies. The dual camera setup has 16 MP + 24 MP sensors. The device runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and has 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM along with internal storage of up to 256 GB.

Under the hood, it packs a 3,800 mAh battery which will power the phone and the two devices comfortably, according to the company. The Nubia X does so by using technologies such as NeoPower 3.0. Additionally, it also has two fingerprint sensors, placed on either sides of the device. The dual side-mounted sensors are to increase convenience for users and allow them to access the device with either hand.

Nubia Technology is a smartphone manufacturer based in Shenzhen, China which was first started by ZTE in 2012. But in 2017, ZTE reduced its stake in the company after which Nubia became an independent company. Previously Nubia has manufactured some cool looking smartphones in black colours with red accents. Though the company offers good smartphones they have not seen substantial growth in the Indian market. That could also be due to almost non-existent marketing and availability of the smartphones in India.

Nubia launched a gaming niche specific Red Magic smartphone in Europe & China earlier this year. The company initially offered 10,000 units of the gaming smartphone on a Chinese vendor jd.com which got sold out in a mere 37 seconds. Red Magic Design

The smartphone has a front glass and rear aluminum build which looks really good in the black and red color with an RGB led bar running across the back. The front of the glass has prominent top and bottom bezels. The front camera and speakerphone are also placed on the top bezel.

The Red Magic has 4 red colored mesh grills on the back of the device. Out of which the top two act as exhaust holes for the multilayer cooling technology. While the bottom right mesh acts as the loudspeaker for the phone. The back of the device also houses the hexagonally shaped camera, LED flash and the fingerprint sensor. The RGB light bar is placed below the fingerprint reader and can be set to the choice of the user or changes according to the colours on the display. The company logo and branding is also engraved onto the rear aluminium panel.

    Nubia Red Magic

The power button and the volume rockers are present on the right side of the device. Additionally, the Red Magic also has a dedicated Compete mode button that is placed over the volume rocker. The gaming button when slid up, closes the background applications and enters a dedicated gaming space for maximum gaming performance. The handset also has a 3.5 mm jack to connect to your favorite headphones and a bottom mounted  USB Type-C port for data sync and charging.

In terms of the user interface, the Red Magic uses Nubia’s custom skin which is built on top of Android.
