Facebook Announces Its Cryptocurrency Named Libra

American social media giant Facebook has announced a digital currency called Libra on the 18th of June. It is a cryptocurrency that aims at allowing billions of Facebook users to make transactions globally. Libra is expected to debut in the year 2020 alongside a blockchain network supporting it. The company also introduced its newest subsidiary called Calibra, which is a payments interface that will leverage the various assets of Facebook like Messenger and WhatsApp.

    About Libra

    Facebook Libra

As mentioned above, Libra is the latest cryptocurrency backed by Facebook. The company believes it will be used for money transfer between people in developing countries; who do not have access to a proper banking structure. The final goal though is to develop the first mainstream cryptocurrency, which is in use more than Bitcoin. Facebook believes Libra will grow into a currency which is stable and decentralized; this means no country will have ruling rights over it. Although the social media company is developing the currency, it has formed the non-profit Libra Association alongside 27 other partners so help it develop and get the cryptocurrency into the mainstream market. These partners include names like Mastercard, Visa, eBay, PayPal, Uber and Vodafone.

The aforementioned organizations together are set to contribute to an asset pool known as Libra Reserve. This will make sure that every Libra (a unit of the currency) is backed by something essential in nature. This is different than how Bitcoin works, as it relies on its rarity and insufficiency to increase in value. Facebook’s Libra is being viewed as a financial behemoth, due to the sheer number of people using Facebook actively, which is around 2.4 billion each month. However, as the company always finds itself in the middle of a privacy debate, it may also face a lot of criticism when it lands next year.

India Asks WhatsApp To Digitally Fingerprint Every Message For Traceability

WhatsApp Messenger, owned by the American social media giant Facebook is one of the most popular messaging services in the world. And the largest market for the application in India, with over 200 million active users in the country. Lately, the platform has been plagued with malicious activities, some of which are criminal in nature. To counter that, the Indian government has asked WhatsApp to digitally fingerprint every message sent on the app for easy traceability.

    About the move

    WhatsApp

A report claims that WhatsApp has been asked by the Indian government to make it easy to trace the origins of a message on its platform. This may be achieved by placing a digital fingerprint of the sender on the message. Notably, the messaging app boasts of a secure, end to end encryption on its platform since the year 2016. This according to the company, does not let even its employees view what has been sent or received on its platform. Two government officials have said that it should be able to identify where a message has originated and how many people have interacted with it; that is either have read it or have forwarded it. Interestingly, this is not the first time demand from the Indian government similar to the one mentioned above has been shared with WhatsApp.

While the Indian government has claimed the request to trace the messages on WhatsApp will be limited; it goes against the company’s privacy policies. The company claims it cannot go forward with the demands as it would change the architecture of the product and make it a different application altogether. So, the introduction of a digital fingerprint to track the origins of a message on WhatsApp might be seen as a breach of privacy.

On the other hand, the bigger screen on the 6.7 inch OLED 5G supporting iPhone; in 2020 means a bigger screen real estate for content consumption. The iPhone XR successor for 2020 will also reportedly feature an OLED display as mentioned above while retaining the same size as its predecessor. Huawei Smartphone Shipments To Drop By Up To 60 % Due To US Ban

Last month, the United States government put Chinese telecom giant Huawei on an entity list which barred all American companies from doing business with it. Due to the decision, Huawei lost access to business with companies like Google, Microsoft and Intel. The former was the most important for its smartphone business, as it meant the company will not be able to provide software updates to its devices. It was expected that due to this decision, sales of the company’s handsets will reduce drastically. Now, a report claims Huawei will face a drop in smartphone shipments by up to 60% in 2019 in comparison to last year.

    About the report

As mentioned above, Huawei is expected to face a dip in its smartphone shipments from 40 percent to 60 percent over last year if the ban continues. This dip in sales is claimed to last until the year 2021 starting when the company is expected to recuperate. The percentage might translate to a drop in shipments volumes ranging between 40 million and 60 million devices. Due to the loss in sales, Huawei may also be planning to stop all shipments of its latest Honor 20 series; which is supposed to go on sale in Europe starting the 21st June and is a flagship smartphone of its subsidiary Honor.

  • Google Accused Of Copying Song Lyrics In Search Results

Google Accused Of Copying Song Lyrics In Search Results

American search engine giant Google has been accused of copying song lyrics from the leading song lyrics website Genius. The latter has claimed in a report that it has been notifying Google about the plagiarism since the year 2017 but no action was taken since then. The lyrics were posted on the search results of the songs without necessary credit being given to the original publisher.

    About the accusation

    Google Genius

As mentioned above, Genius has claimed Google has lifted song lyrics from its website to display in search results. The evidence submitted by the plaintiff regarding the case was related to how the lyrics were drafted. Genius claims it knowingly used a combination of straight and curved apostrophes as a form of watermarking on its website. Interestingly, in a morse code form, the combination of the apostrophes spell out “Red Handed”; which is a fancy way of catching those who copy from its website, red handed. According to Genius, there are over a hundred cases where Google lyrics have also included the exact apostrophe sequence, confirming the plagiarism charges.

Google, in a statement, has denied all the aforementioned claims by Genius. It has said that the company takes copyright very seriously and that it sources the lyrics from LyricFind; who is also a known name in song lyrics and major contributor on Google’s search results. While Genius’ case against Google is quite strong, it may not hold up well in court as it does not own the copyright of the lyrics in question. However, the former has claimed that the traffic on its website has decreased substantially ever since the latter started displaying lyrics in the search results. Google has started an investigation regarding the plagiarism claims and more details are awaited when the results of it are announced.

Huawei Patents Smartphone With Double Folding Display

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei announced the Mate X back in the month of February. It was the first foldable smartphone from the company and featured an outward folding mechanism. A few days ago, it was revealed that the device’s launch date of June has been pushed back to September this year owing to the company perfecting the design of the handset. Now, patents of another Huawei foldable smartphone have surfaced online. The images in the patent application reveal the device will have a double folding display.

    About the patent

    Huawei

The Huawei patent mentioned above was registered last year by the European Patent Office in the Netherlands. A patent entitled “foldable mobile device” was then granted by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) on 31st May. Images in the patent reveal a familiar design to the Huawei Mate X. The smartphone has an outward folding display, however, the display can be folded two times as opposed to one on the Mate X. This design is oddly familiar to the Xiaomi foldable smartphone, which was showcased in a video a while ago.

    Huawei

The images reveal three different models Huawei may be planning for the future. In the first variant, a widescreen border is present on the top and bottom of the smartphone. The bezel contains the camera sensors and a home button. The second variant contains a single bezel on the top, which houses the front-facing camera and other necessary sensors. On the other hand, the third model consists of just the display which extends on all sides of the device. Renders based on the third model have been showcased in the report.

Samsung Galaxy Fold To Be Delayed Further, Might Launch After August

Samsung introduced its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold at the Unpacked event back in the month of February alongside the Galaxy S10 series. It was revealed that the sales for the device will start from the 26th of April. However, early review units of the handsets started breaking and malfunctioning for reviewers. This led to the company recalling all review units and release a statement that the launch date of the Galaxy Fold has been delayed. It has been over two months now, and no official re-launch date for the smartphone has been provided by Samsung. Now, a senior company executive has told a Korean media outlet that the launch is being delayed further, as no progress has been made on the device.

    Galaxy Fold Delay

    Samsung Galaxy Fold

As mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy Fold has been delayed once again in hitting the market. While it was being speculated that the smartphone will be reintroduced in the month of July, a senior Samsung executive has revealed that is not the case. He claims that if a launch was scheduled within a month from now, an announcement would have been already made. It has also been revealed that no progress has been made since the recall of the device in the month of April. It may insinuate that the company has not found a real solution for the hinge problem with the handset, or it hasn’t progressed with a new launch date. With the latest news of a delay, the Samsung Galaxy Fold may be launched after the Galaxy Note 10; which is speculated to launch in the month of August.

Even though the company previously claimed that it has successfully eliminated all the problems with the device, a statement regarding the launch date is still awaited.

The chipset is likely to be manufactured on the 7nm fabrication process like its predecessor. As mentioned above, the Snapdragon 865 will arrive in two variants, with one supporting 5G; the next generation of mobile connectivity, with the help of an integrated modem. The other variant will not have an integrated modem and should natively support 4G LTE networks and not 5G. The different variants are code-named Kona and Huracan, but it is not known which one carries the 5G modem.

Like the previous generations, it is expected that Qualcomm may announce the Snapdragon 865 in the month of December. As mentioned above, Game Builder is a tool designed to create video games without coding. It is developed by Google’s in house Area 120 team which has been responsible for a few experimental projects in the past. When running for the first time, it asks the user what screen size they are aiming for the resulting game to run on. Then it offers an option to either start a new project, work on an existing one or try sample projects. These sample projects include a variety of options, like a first-person shooting game, a platformer title; or show a demo of the Game Builder card system for trying complex interactions inside a game.

The movements can also be selected by using real-time javascript functionality; which does not require compiling to save a command. Google claims the tool has thousands of 3D objects like animals and plants which can be placed inside the game. Game Builder is available for free on Valve’s Steam platform for both the Windows and MacOS platforms. While not for everyone, the Game Builder tool seems to be a great platform for people wanting to create their own game without wanting to learn complex coding.
