In June 2018, OnePlus is expected to launch its new flagship device, the OnePlus 6. It will succeed the very popular OnePlus 5T which was launched in November 2017. Just like every OnePlus launch, the OnePlus 6 is also highly anticipated as it will be one of the most affordable flagship devices in India. So, with the launch a couple of months away, what do we know about it so far?
Update: New report claims that the OnePlus 6 will have a starting price of Rs. 34000 and have a design similar to the leaked image. Read the full story here!
The OnePlus 5, at the time of its launch, was criticised for its price tag. The smartphone was priced higher than the OnePlus 3T and still didn’t offer features like wireless charging or water resistance. However, with a revamped design, the OnePlus 5T sort of justified the price tag. Looking at the recent leaks, it looks like OnePlus will add wireless charging to its repertoire this time around. This means that we could see a hike in the price of the OnePlus 6. The 64GB version of the OnePlus 6 could be priced at Rs. 35999.
The design is where the OnePlus 6 is expected to take things a “notch” further. The most believable images of the OnePlus 6 leaked so far reveal a very important design element. Taking a cue from Apple, the OnePlus 6 might have a notch at the top of the display. This should not be a surprise considering the number of Android devices that were showcased at Mobile World Congress 2018 sported a notch. Also, the OPPO R15 with a notch was recently launched, which is expected to be the OnePlus 6 with flagship specifications.
The next major design shift will be in the build quality. This time around, the OnePlus 6 is expected to have a ‘glass sandwich’ design with a very reflective back, just like the OPPO R15 Dream Mirror Edition. However, unlike the OPPO R15, the OnePlus 6 might have support for wireless charging.
The OnePlus 6 is expected to have a 6.28 inch Optim AMOLED display with a 2280 x 1080 px resolution. This weird resolution is a result of the notch. OnePlus is expected to retain the Optic AMOLED display as well as the resolution from the OnePlus 5T. The company has been adamant about its use of a 1080P panel over 1440P and it doesn’t seem like the stance will change anytime soon.
Under The Hood
There a few aspects of the OnePlus 6 that will definitely be true. For starters, it will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset. Coupled with that will either be 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of onboard storage, respectively. As has been the history, the storage will not be expandable via a microSD card.
Before the launch of the OnePlus 5T, the company claimed that its DashCharge technology is much better than wireless charging. However, it looks more and more likely that the OnePlus 6 will indeed incorporate the Qi standard wireless charging. It is also possible that the new smartphone will come with an IP67 rating, at the least, if not IP68.
The OnePlus 6 will have a dual-camera setup on the back and a single camera on the front. While the leaked image of the OnePlus 6 revealed a vertically placed setup, the OPPO R15 has a setup similar to the OnePlus 5T. Apart from that, the 6 is expected to retain the OnePlus 5T camera implementation. Going by the industry trend, it could have a few “AI capabilities,” similar to the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s.
Face ID-like Face Unlock?
The OnePlus 5T was launched a couple of months after the iPhone X, which had Face ID. Similarly, OnePlus launched the 5T with a new Face Unlock feature. Although it is nowhere near how secure Face ID is, it is much faster and more convenient. With a possible notch on the display, it is possible that the company will introduce a much more secure version of Face Unlock with the OnePlus 6.
If true, it might justify the presence of that notch as well, just like the iPhone X.
