Dell G3 Gaming Laptop Review : Gaming And More

Dell is well known for its Alienware gaming laptops. However, Dell is also pushing out machines that aren’t dedicated gaming machines, but deliver great gaming performance along with all-round usability. The Dell G3 is a part of this series of laptops and while it does not look like a traditional gaming laptop, it does pack some impressive specs on paper.

    [section label=”Design & Build”]

    Design & Build

The design of the Dell G3 is sober for a gaming laptop, to say the least. It does not have any flashy lights, heavy accents, nor does it feel like a gaming laptop. On the outside, it carries the Dell logo and a few ports. The laptop has an SD Card port, 2 SuperSpeed USB 3.1 ports, 1 USB 3.1 port, 1 HDMI port, 1 ethernet port, a headphone hack and the charging port. Relatively thin for a gaming laptop at 22.7 mm, the Dell G3 weighs in at just 2.5 Kg.

The subtle design is good in other environments or for users who do not perform heavy gaming. The design of the laptop ensures that it offers the perfect balance, appearing like a regular laptop.

    [section label=”Display”]

    Display

The Dell G3 has a 15.6 inch 1920 x 1080 IPS LED display. Being an IPS display, it has good viewing angles. The display has an anti-glare coating on it as well. The anti-glare coating is great as it protects your eyes from strain caused by continuous exposure to the display. However, the anti-glare coating is probably one of the most ‘glaring’ problems of the laptop. The coating seems to dim down the brightness of the display, and also makes it appear more dull. This is clearly visible while gaming as one feels like the laptop is not on full brightness.

Not only does this affect the gaming experience on the laptop, the issue spreads out to other utilities as well. If you are in a brightly-lit environment, or even outdoors, the display will be hard to view. Another drawback of the coating is that it does not produce an accurate representation of the colours. So if you’re a designer or an editor, using softwares such as Photoshop or Illustrator would be an issue.

    [section label=”Keyboard”]

    Keyboard

The Dell G3 has a full-sized keyboard which adds to your convenience. The keyboard is well spread out and the keys have good travel in between them. The feedback from the keys is also good, fit for both intense gaming and every day business affairs. The keyboard is also equipped with a num pad which is extremely helpful for both gaming as well as day-to-day office activities. The trackpad could have been a bit bigger, considering it needs to be used for gaming and the buttons on the trackpad are a little mushy. So fi you’re using the trackpad, we recommend using touch rather than the physical buttons on it.

The keyboard also has a blue backlight which gives that ‘gaming machine’ feel to the laptop. Again, the colour on the keyboard backlight is not very flashy and is good enough to be used in all environments.

    [section label=”Gaming”]

    Gaming

On paper, the Dell G3 has top of the line specifications. It has an 8th gen, Intel i7 processor which reaches upto 4.1 GHz with Turbo Boost. It runs on 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and has 128 GB of SSD storage, with an additional 1 TB HDD. For graphics, it is supported by the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with a 4 GB GDDR5 graphics memory. All of this should make the G3 a gaming beast, but unfortunately, it isn’t.

While games such as PUBG run pretty smoothly at a high graphics configuration, the laptop does struggle with heavier games. For example, it could run Wolfenstein II and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey at mid graphics and at 30 fps. Also considering the fact that Wolfenstein II is relatively old. Adding to this is the average display which really took away the pleasure of a good gaming experience .

You can solve this issue by swapping out the 1 TB HDD for a faster and more efficient SSD. On the other hand, you can just run your games out of the existing 128 GB SSD on the laptop, or even upgrade that SSD to a higher storage capacity.

    [section label=”Performance”]

    Perfromance

The battery life on the laptop is decent, with it providing around an hour and a half with intense gaming and around 5-6 hours of light use. You can also disable the graphics card while not in use, which will add on its battery life.

The G3 also has a dedicated webcam, with a 720p resolution. While the camera quality is not brilliant, it is enough for basic video calling and Skype sessions. The laptop also has two microphones out front, which capture good sound and can be helpful if you forget to carry your gaming headsets around. The G3 also has 2 front firing speakers, which are tuned by Waves MaxxAudio, giving out good quality of sound, which makes for an immersive experience while gaming or viewing content.

    [section label=”Serviceability”]

    Serviceability

A huge advantage that the laptop does offer is the ability to swap out and upgrade components in case you want to upgrade something or simply change out faulty or worn out parts. The bottom has all the components laid out in a very accessible fashion. You can easily swap out your HDD for an SSD, for example.

    [section label=”Verdict”]

    Verdict

While the Dell G3 is not a hardcore gaming laptop, it fulfils what it sets out to do. It is an all-round performer with the ability to be used for day-to-day operations as well as a higher level of gaming. However, if you are someone who is looking for something that will exclusively be used as a gaming machine, the Dell G3 is not for you. But if you’re in the market for a feature packed, overall well performing laptop, this is probably the machine for you. At a price of Rs 84,990, this is a pretty good deal for its price.

  • Nokia 8.1 To Launch Soon, Runs On Snapdragon 710

Nokia 8.1 To Launch Soon, Runs On Snapdragon 710

The Nokia 8.1 was spotted on Geekbench a few weeks back. It has now popped up on the list of Google’s ARCore supported devices. With these listings already out, it is said that HMD will launch the smartphone soon. Other specifications of the device include the Snapdragon 710 SoC, 4 GB of RAM and Android 9 Pie. There are some speculations that this could be the Nokia X7 which was launched in China last month, as its specifications match that of the alleged Nokia 8.1.

    Nokia 8.1 Or X7

However, it is possible that this could another device. Since the Nokia X7 has a 6.18 inch display, it will most probably carry the ‘Plus’ title after its name. As Nokia usually does with larger screen devices. Therefore, the X7 might be the Nokia 7.1 Plus while the Nokia 8.1 will sport a slightly smaller 5.9 inch display. ARCore is a kit developed by Google to allow augmented reality applications for a certain smartphone to be built. Therefore, the inclusion of ARCore support in the 8.1 could mean that we would see more AR integration in the camera. This could include elements such as stickers and even interactive animations.

Earlier, the Geekbench listing of the Nokia 8.1 had given us some more specifications about the device. The geek bench listing showed that the phone has a single-core score of 1841 and a multi-core score of 5807. Considering the current design language being used by Nokia, we can expect the device to have a Zeiss dual rear camera setup. It might have a glass body, with an aluminium frame. Running on the Snapdragon 710, the phone is most probably a mid-ranger and will be priced accordingly. Pricing will be the key as the mid-range segment is home to a lot of competition. This can make it difficult for even some of the best smartphones.

With a lot of upcoming launches coming our way from HMD Global, including the Nokia 9 and the Nokia 7.1, we can expect the Nokia 8.1 to launch soon as well.

  • Nokia 9 With Penta Camera Setup To Launch Soon

Nokia 9 With Penta Camera Setup To Launch Soon

Just as we thought that all the major launches for the year were done and dusted, reports about the Nokia 9’s imminent launch surface. The Nokia 9 is exciting and highly anticipated, for 5 reasons; It’s penta camera setup. Jokes aside, this is one of the biggest design changes in a year full of big design changes. 2018 saw the adoption of in-display fingerprint sensors, sliding camera modules, and the addition of more lenses to the camera setup. But how many lenses are too many lenses, and does a smartphone need them at all?

    Nokia 9

The Nokia 9 made headlines a few months ago when a hands-on image of the device leaked, showing off its penta camera setup. While the setup is impressive, it is equally peculiar as well. The setup features three vertically aligned lenses, likes of which we’ve seen before, however they are a bit spaced out. Accompanying these are two more lenses placed to the sides of the vertical setup. These are placed adjacent to what appears to be two flash modules. This setup does look like something out of a sci-fi movie, but the fact that it is a patented design by Zeiss, adds to the legitimacy of the leak.

    Specifications

The patented design by Zeiss is called ‘Miniature Zoom Camera’. This uses an array of multiple smaller lenses in a circle instead of singular or dual, larger sensors. The setup is said to consist of an image sensor and a normal lens. Along with a secondary group of ‘rotating lenses’ with varying focal lengths. Apart from the unique camera setup, the Nokia 9 is said to have a 6 inch AMOLED display with an in-display fingerprint scanner. The device will  run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 8 GB of RAM. It is also said to have an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Apart from this, it will have 256 GB of inbuilt storage and a 3,900 mAh battery.

Apart from the aforementioned features, it is also said to run on the Android One OS. The device is also exciting as it will be one of the first devices to carry the PureView trademark after HMD Global reacquired the same. It is well known that a smartphone with a PureView trademark never disappoints in the camera department. And with a Nokia-Zeiss collaboration, we can expect something great.

The device had gone underground for a while, but sources say that HMD had done so to ensure that there were no further leaks about the device. The Nokia 9 is the next flagship from HMD and is highly anticipated due to its long list of features. According to sources, the device can be expected to launch 3-4 weeks from now.

  • Samsung Showcases Its Foldable Smartphone With Infinity Flex Display

Samsung Showcases Its Foldable Smartphone With Infinity Flex Display

The long awaited, folding smartphone from Samsung is finally here. Samsung unveiled the phone, which also doubles up as a tablet, at the Samsung Developer Conference. But the company did not reveal an official name for the device. However, they did mention that it uses what is called the Infinity Flex Display. This lets you use the phone as a smartphone when it is folded, and a tablet when the screen is unfolded. The device runs on the new Android OS for folding displays. It will enter mass-production early next year, according to Samsung.

To complete the transition, it uses a 4.6 inch Super AMOLED display which acts as the primary display for when you use it as a smartphone. Upon unfolding, you can use the 7.3 inch Super AMOLED display which is the main display, according to the company. With so much screen available, you can use up to three apps at once, while using the device. The company also ensures a smooth transition between apps. They also claim that the transition from a smartphone to a tablet is smooth and effortless at all times. To make this possible, they take the help of Android, which has announced support for foldable displays.

    The Foldable Future

Samsung has also set up an emulator SDK to help test apps for the device. Additionally, they will provide guidelines on how to develop apps for foldable smartphones. Samsung also said that they have spent a lot of time on perfecting the design elements for the new phone. From what we can see in the video of the device presented by the company, it has much thinner bezels and a smoother finish than the FlexPai folding smartphone, which was launched last week.

Some reports also suggest that this is not the production variant of the phone. Saying that the final version will have thinner bezels and a less bulky design. This would be key as no one would like to lug around a phone that is bulky and inconvenient, no matter how innovative it may be.

  • OPPO Launches Pokemon Edition 10,000 mAh Super VOOC Power Bank

OPPO Launches Pokemon Edition 10,000 mAh Super VOOC Power Bank

The Super VOOC charging technology is one the fastest, if not the fastest charging technologies available on smartphones as of now. The technology was introduced by Oppo earlier this year with the Oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition. The technology claims to charge the Find X fully, in around 35 minutes. Now, Oppo has launched a Super VOOC Power Bank, partnering up with Pokemon. This Pikachu charger is fitting for the technology, with the electric type Pokemon is representing the power bank.

While the power bank sure does look great, it only works on Super VOOC compatible devices. That means the use of the device is limited to only the Oppo Find X and the Oppo R17 smartphones. Additionally, the device can only be charged via a 50W Super VOOC adapter. The power bank offers speeds of upto 50W (10V/5A) while charging the smartphones.

Its not just the speed that the power bank brings with it, it also brings a theme. The theme is present on not only the outside, but the inside as well. When you plug in the power bank, the smartphone displays a special animation on the screen. Along with this, the theme of the device also gets switched over to a Pikachu theme. While more details about what these themes entail are not available, the least we can guess is yellow accent colours, along with some Pikachu animations.

Along with the power bank, the company has also launched an NFC equipped Pikachu case for the Opponent R17 Pro. The power bank costs approximately Rs 4,200 while the case costs around Rs 1,572. Both the items will go on sale soon, however nothing regarding their availability in India is known as of now.

  • Samsung Teases Its Foldable Phone, Will Reveal It Soon

Samsung Teases Its Foldable Phone, Will Reveal It Soon

The Samsung Developer Conference is just a day away and the hype around the event is increasing. Samsung will give the world a first glance at its foldable Galaxy smartphone, which also doubles up as a tablet. The foldable device had been under production for a long time and sports a 7.3 inch foldable internal OLED display.

    Two-Fold Teaser

Samsung updated the pictures on its Twitter handle and Facebook page. The new image features a ‘folding’ logo which obviously points towards the imminent launch of the folding phone. The folding phone has been given the title of Samsung Galaxy ‘F’ according to sources and doubles up as a tablet. There had been a lot of speculation regarding what kind of design Samsung would settle with for the device, and latest reports claim they have the answer. They stated that Samsung will use a 7.3 inch foldable internal OLED display and a 4.6 inch external OLED display. The internal display will hide completely when you fold the device and the external display will let you use it as a smartphone.

    Developer Conference

The device will take centre stage at Samsung’s Developer Conference. The official SDC app also states that Samsung will display their new Android 9 Pie Beta program and a brand new Galaxy UX. It also states that we will get to see ‘how a foldable displanew experience creates a totally e’. However, this is not the first folding display. A Chinese company, Rouyu has already shown their display running on the unannounced Snapdragon 8150 ( a.k.a Snapdragon 855). The device is available for pre-order and a lot of people also had used the device hands-on.

However, as we have seen before, it doesn’t matter that much as to who introduced the technology first. It is expected that Samsung phone will produce a much more refined and smoother device when compared to the Rouyu FlexPai. Samsung is also expected to provide more details about its Galaxy Home AI Speaker at the event.

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 To Not Have The Iris Scanner

Samsung Galaxy S10 To Not Have The Iris Scanner

The Samsung Galaxy S10 is the upcoming flagship by Samsung. The smartphone marks the 10th anniversary of the Galaxy S series by Samsung and is therefore bound to be special. Previous leaks of the smartphone have showcased some very exciting features of the Galaxy S10. These include an almost bezel-less display with an in-display cameraamong others. Latest reports suggest that Samsung will remove the Iris Scanner on the Galaxy S10. It will instead replaced by an in-display fingerprint sensor.

    More Than Meets the Eye

    Galaxy S9

The Iris Scanner was first introduced with the Galaxy Note 7, infamous for its faulty batteries, which caused some smartphones to explode. The technology is seen in all the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S devices launched after the Note 7. The Galaxy Tab S4 is the most recent device to sport the Iris Scanner. The Iris Scanner by Samsung promised a high level of security with equally high levels of privacy as well. But now, the technology will make way for something bigger and more important; a larger display.

Removing the sensor present on the top will ensure that there is more screen real estate on the Samsung Galaxy S10. The device will either have an in-display front-facing camera or a camera cut out on the display. This will make way for more screen real estate while not settling for a notch. Samsung is the only major Smartphone manufacturer who has not adopted the notch yet. We expect for the company to set a new trend with its next smartphone.

    UltraSonic Fingerprint Sensor

    Top 10 Features

The Samsung Galaxy S10 will now have an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader. Almost all the smartphones available in the market today use an optical in-display fingerprint reader. The ultrasonic sensor is much more secure and upto 3x more expensive than its optical counterpart. Qualcomm has already finished the development of this sensor which uses cameras to map the ridges in your fingerprint along with the sweat pores on your fingers. The technology can work well through any type of display and also while in contact with water, sweat or grease.

With all these features and more which are yet to be seen, the Galaxy S10 is shaping up to become a really interesting smartphone.

  • Apple iPhones To Get 5G Connectivity In 2020

Apple iPhones To Get 5G Connectivity In 2020

With 5G technology at the brink of reaching consumers soon, it is not surprising that tech giant Apple is gearing up to launch its own 5G handsets. Companies like OnePlus, Xiaomi and Oppo have already partnered with Qualcomm. They have even started testing some of their 5G compatible devices. However, Apple is partnering with Intel to make 5G enabled iPhones available by 2020. Apple will use Intel’s 8161 5G modem, according to reports.

    Apple’s 5G

Intel plans to use the 10nm process for its 8161 chip, which will increase transistor density and hence provide more speed and efficiency. Intel is also working on a separate chip, the 8060. This will be used for prototyping and testing on the 5G iPhone. However, things have not been all smooth sailing between Apple and Intel.

The 8060 has some heat dissipation issues which has not yet been solved by Intel. This could be due to the fact that 5G carriers will initially rely on the millimetre-wave spectrum to connect the first few 5G phones. However, this process is extremely demanding on the modems. It causes them to release levels of heat which are higher than the normal. These levels can reach a stage where they can be felt on the exterior of the device as well and also affects battery life. Obviously, Apple is not happy with these results.

Intel is said to be working on solving this issue. But it seems like this hurdle isn’t big enough for Apple to reopen talks with Qualcomm regarding the supply of chips. Qualcomm’s 5G modem also has its own share of heat dissipation issues. However, the chip maker has said that it has found a way around this and solved the issue. Apple has reportedly held conversations with MediaTek as well, regarding the supply of 5G modems. However, MediaTek usually makes chips for budget and mid-range devices. Therefore, it might not be the perfect fit for Apple’s flagship iPhones. The talks however have taken place and MediaTek is just a distant ‘Plan B’, according to reports.

    The Race To 5G

A number of Android devices with 5G capability will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress, early next year. This might make it seem like Apple is joining the party a bit too late, however, the move makes perfect sense. Although chip manufacturers are making 5G modems this year itself and basic infrastructure for 5G will be set up soon. It does not guarantee great 5G connectivity. Infrastructure will be present, but it will be limited. This would give users great download speeds at very limited places and not any dependable connectivity. Therefore, waiting till 2020 to ensure that the required infrastructure is present, instead of rushing into making sure ‘we did it first’ could be a logical move by Apple.

  • OnePlus 6T Thunder Purple Edition Shown Off In Official Renders

OnePlus 6T Thunder Purple Edition Shown Off In Official Renders

Earlier this week, a listing had given us an idea about the existence of a OnePLus 6T Thunder Purple variant. The listing now seems legit as official press images of the same have now been leaked. The OnePlus 6T Thunder Purple sure does look great. It also hints at the fact that OnePlus may have some more variants of their latest flagship in store for us.

This trend was started way back with the OnePlus 5T. The 5T saw a limited edition variant launching sometime after the smartphone itself was launched. The OnePlus 6 also carried forward this trend by releasing two new colours, Silk White and Red, followed by an Avengers Limited Edition device. Keeping this in mind, it is safe to say that we might see the launch of many other colours and maybe even limited editions of the OnePlus 6T.

Last month, a listing on a German website had given us a glance at an Ultimate Edition’ OnePlus 6T. But it was taken down soon after. The listing detailed just a 100 pieces of this truly limited device. However, OnePlus is yet to make a comment on any new editions of the OnePlus 6T which we might see in the future.

This might change as a listing of the device showed an option that is sure to make you excited; the OnePlus 6T Thunder Purple.

With such an exciting name, we just hope that the device looks as great as it sounds. The Thunder Purple variant was listed for a brief while after the Keynote at the New York launch ended on 29 October. It was taken down soon after, but not quick enough to escape the eyes of ever-so vigilant leakers and fans. • Rouyu Reveals FlexPai : World’s First Foldable Smartphone

Rouyu Reveals FlexPai : World’s First Foldable Smartphone

The launch of a smartphone with a folding display was imminent, but this isn’t the one we were expecting. While the Samsung Galaxy ‘F’ or even the folding smartphone from LG and Huawei were on the table, Chinese manufacturer Rouyu has beaten them to the finish line. The Rouyu Flexpai has a 7.8 inch HD display and runs on the Snapdragon 8150 SoC. The Snapdragon 8150 (or the Snapdragon 855) is yet to be announced. It will be the next flagship processor from Qualcomm, based on the 7nm manufacturing process.

    Specifications

These unique features make it the not only the first smartphone to have a folding display but also the first to run on the next generation processor from Qualcomm. The folding display is just 7.6 mm thick, according to the company. However, they haven’t specified as to whether this is an LCD or an OLED panel. The FlexiPai runs on the Snapdragon 8150, as mentioned before and has 6 GB and 8 GB RAM variants. The smartphone is available in 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB storage options.

The smartphone has a dual, 16 MP + 20 MP rear camera setup, which consists of a wide-angle and a telephoto lens, respectively.  The company did not mention anything about the battery capacity of the smartphone but did announce that it would support ‘Ro-Charge’, the company’s proprietary fast charging technology.

The company didn’t showcase the phone, just a few images and the key specifications. However, a popular leakster on twitter shared a hands-on demo with the device. This shows the folding mechanism of the smartphone. However, the design looks rough and the UI seems to struggle to keep up while folding the device. The smartphone shown in the video might just be a prototype or an earlier version, as we hope that the retail unit of the Rouyu Felxpai is much smoother.

As far as the lack of a front-facing camera, the Nubia makes up for it by having a display on its back as well.  This helps the user to utilise the main, dual camera setup to click ‘high quality’ selfies. The dual camera setup has 16 MP + 24 MP sensors. The device runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and has 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM along with internal storage of up to 256 GB.

Under the hood, it packs a 3,800 mAh battery which will power the phone and the two devices comfortably, according to the company. The Nubia X does so by using technologies such as NeoPower 3.0. Additionally, it also has two fingerprint sensors, placed on either sides of the device. The dual side-mounted sensors are to increase convenience for users and allow them to access the device with either hand.

The Nubia X is sure as unique as it is unconventional. The questions still lingers as to whether the features are actually good enough to bring in a new level of convenience. As of now, the Nubia X has only been launched in China. It will retail at a price of CNY 3,299 for its base variant.

  • OnePlus 6T Receives Oxygen OS 9.0.4 Update

OnePlus 6T Receives Oxygen OS 9.0.4 Update

The OnePlus 6T was launched in India on October 30th and the device is already getting updates. We are all familiar with OnePlus’s Oxygen OS which provides an almost stock Android experience, almost mirroring that of the Google Pixel. Additionally, the OnePlus 6 is also the one of the first devices to receive Android 9 Pie, second only to the Google Pixel. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Oneplus 6T has already started receiving updates.

The Oxygen OS 9.0.4 update is rolling out to all the OnePlus 6T devices and brings in changes in the Nightscape feature and some security updates. Since the camera hardware used in the 6T is the same as the OnePlus 6, the company had to look for ways to make sure that the performance improves. The Nightscape feature on the OnePlus 6T claims to improve the lowlight performance of the camera. As of now, Nightscape does offer visible improvements, but not something that is a game-changer. The slight upgrades brought by this update might change that. It also added studio lighting to enhance pictures taken by the phone.

The update also includes power consumption optimisations, bug fixes and improvements to the Screen Unlock feature. The update also mentions brand new navigation gestures, but we are not sure as to what that means as the OnePlus 6T had new navigation gestures out of the box.
