Xiaomi Announces The Selfie Centric CC Smartphone Series In China

It was revealed a while ago that Xiaomi is planning on introducing a new, selfie-centric smartphone series in China. This lineup was expected to be made in collaboration with the Meitu brand which Xiaomi acquired last year. Now, the CEO of the company has announced the lineup with a post on Chinese social networking website Weibo and revealed it will be known as the CC series. It was speculated that the company will also introduce new smartphones under the lineup with the announcement, but that didn’t happen.

    Xiaomi CC9

As mentioned above, Xiaomi has announced the CC series of selfie centric smartphones made in collaboration with Meitu. The latter, before the former’s acquisition of its hardware business, was a known name in China in regard to smartphones that cater to the young generation. There were no devices launched as of yet, but it is expected that a handset with the moniker CC9 will be the first one to be launched under the series.

The senior Xiaomi executive in his post explained the reason behind the CC name, which stands for Colourful and Creative. The CC9 smartphone will also have a definitive meaning to its name. It is being released on the 9th anniversary of the Xiaomi brand, which is why the number is being added to the name. The teaser that was previously shown off reveals the CC9 will have a flip camera mechanism similar to the Asus 6Z launched a few days ago in India. Unlike the smartphone though, the CC9 will have a triple camera set up inside the module.

The smartphones under Xiaomi’s CC series will be developed by young company executives; which are being referred to as the Chic & Cool 90 team. According to the company’s CEO, the team will pursue design and aesthetics first and then core specifications later. This insinuates that the handsets under the CC moniker will not have top tier hardware and will be focussed towards the youth. Unfortunately, further details about the CC series of smartphones are not available yet but are expected to be unveiled in the following weeks.

Poco F1 Receives MIUI Update With May Android Security Patch

Xiaomi had unveiled the Poco F1 in 2018, with a price tag that was below any of its competitors for the hardware offered. The company’s low budget powerhouse was received relatively warmly with its performance rivalling devices priced even upto three times higher. Xiaomi is still working on perfecting the formula with Poco F1, which has started receiving the latest MIUI update along with the May 2019 Android patch.

    Poco F1

MIUI v10.3.5.0 brings improvements across the board for the budget flagship. This update will also seek to address many of the bugs that have plagued the smartphone like fix regarding dual app functionality which suddenly disappeared for some users. The rollout of the new update includes new features, such as customizable lock screen clocks, as well. Furthermore, it has been officially confirmed by Xiaomi that the Poco F1 will receive the Android Q update.

    Poco F1

The device was formally unveiled running Android Oreo (8.0) under the MIUI last year. Notably, since launch, the handset has received Android Pie (9.0) alongside the MIUI 10 update in early 2019. The Poco F1 update carries a size of 387MB and is being launched in India in small batches. Users interested in finding out if they have received the update can check under the ‘System Update’ options in ‘Settings’.

Poco Officials have seemingly confirmed the arrival of Android Q on its budget smartphone alongside the beta program. The program will be an opt-in for anyone interested in the Poco Launcher 2.0. The new launcher is touted as a new experience and a slight preview has been provided on Twitter. Poco F1 had just received the MIUI v10.3.4.0 update back in April that brought features such as the 4K 60FPS recording capabilities, Widevine L1 support and a dedicated Game Turbo mode.

  • Xiaomi MIUI Update Will Introduce An App Drawer To Launcher

Xiaomi MIUI Update Will Introduce An App Drawer To Launcher

Xiaomi is one of the leading smartphone manufacturers in the world with a total market share of about 8 per cent (as of Q1 2019). This implies that there are effectively 100+ million Xiaomi devices running the MIUI. Hence, any update will impact a large number of people. According to reports, Xiaomi is planning on providing the MIUI with an app drawer which will be seen for the first time ever since its launch.

The Chinese company’s UI has always lacked the aforementioned feature, and users looking for one had to turn towards third-party app launchers. However, this may very well change soon. Xiaomi is currently testing an app drawer in its stock MIUI launcher along with app shortcuts. POCO launcher was the first to include app drawers with the POCO F1 when it released in 2018.

    Xiaomi

The latest alpha build of the Xiaomi MIUI launcher, version 4.10.6.1025-06141703, is testing out the new feature. Users will now be able to tap on the middle button in the app bar found in the bottom of the home screen to open the app drawer. This is unlike any other current gen Android device that requires a swipe from the bottom. Furthermore, this addition to the user interface will probably be very well received as more customizability to consumers is always a good deal.

MIUI in its latest version also receives a new app shortcuts feature. These are programmable commands that pop up when an app icon is long-pressed. This was initially seen with the release of Android Nougat 7.0 and allowed users to launch a specified part of the app directly. The upcoming Xiaomi MIUI launcher is in its early stage of development and testing, meaning there is still time before it will go live.

For those interested, it should be noted that due to it being in the alpha stages it is not likely to be polished or stable. Incidents like crashes during use will be probable, hence, it is not recommended to be downloaded and used by default immediately. The new launcher will be available to all that are devices running MIUI. Xiaomi has listened to its community that had longed for this feature since the POCO F1.

Xiaomi’s Component Supplier, Holitech Sets Up A Massive Manufacturing Unit In Noida

India was one of the first countries where the Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi launched its offerings. The company over the last few years due to value for money products has seen significant growth in the Indian market. To further increase its affinity with the local customers, the company has been promoting locally assembled devices. The “Make In India” movement initiated by the Indian government has also been well embraced by the company. To take the local assembly step further, Xiaomi’s key component supplier Holitech has set up a massive plant in the city of Greater Noida.

Speaking of “Make In India” movement, several companies including Xiaomi, imported key components of smartphones from China which were locally assembled into functional smartphones. This partial local manufacturing has also seen somewhat of a backlash from users who were aware of this strategy. However, it must be noted that these companies were forced into opting for the aforementioned choices. As manufacturing of vital components like display, chipset, fingerprint sensors takes state of the art infrastructure for which takes a lot of capital upfront. Xiaomi Redmi 7

With the growing demand for smartphones and conditions favourable for setting up large assembly units, Holitech has inaugurated the is first assembly facility in Noida which spans across 25000 square metres. Talking about investment figures, the company will invest a sum of over 200 Million USD in it over the next three years. Noteworthy, the manufacturing unit will reportedly generate 6000 jobs. The components that Holitech Technology will manufacture locally in the Greater Noida plant include Compact Camera Modules (CCM), Capacitive Touch Screen module (CTM), Thin Film Transistor (TFT), Flexible Printed Circuits (FPC), and fingerprint modules. Praiseworthy, the Holitech plant also boasts of class 1000 and class 100 clean room which is an industry first. A cleanroom is a contained space where provisions are made to reduce particulate contamination and control other environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity and pressure.

  • Under Display Selfie Camera Technology Showed Off By Oppo And Xiaomi

Under Display Selfie Camera Technology Showed Off By Oppo And Xiaomi

Innovation regarding smartphone cameras is an ongoing process in the current scenario. Instances from the past include the first pop-up camera, which was introduced in the Vivo Nex in the year 2018. In constant strife to eliminate notches in smartphone displays, brands such as Samsung and ASUS launched the Galaxy A80 and Zenfone 6 respectively, which feature rotating camera systems. However, Chinese brands Oppo and Xiaomi have posted videos that showcase smartphones with under-display selfie cameras in all their glory.

A senior Oppo executive allegedly shared a short video clip of a prototype smartphone sans a notch. When the camera app was launched, the screen displayed a view of the room’s ceiling, whereas no front camera can be spotted in the video. To confirm that the camera being showcased is an under-display module, the VP hovered his finger above the spot where the selfie camera is supposed to be, and as expected, it was visible on the display.

On the other hand, Xiaomi also posted a video which showcases two smartphones held next to each other. The device on the right features a waterdrop style notch, whereas the one on the left has no notch at all. After the camera application was launched, the user of the device switched to the front camera, which was placed under the display and hence wasn’t visible at all.

    Oppo Xiaomi Under display Camera

As further stated by the Oppo executive, an under-display camera would imply that there will be one less fragile component in the device to worry about. Moreover, there will be no physical wear and tear regarding such a camera module. However, a significant loss in optical quality may be experienced in the early stages of development as stated by the company.

Nonetheless, this unveil may be an indication that Oppo’s sister company, Vivo might also be working on a smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. The company previously hinted at such a feature in the Vivo Apex 2019 concept smartphone. Since the smartphone was devoid of any notch and ports, it is expected that the device will be launched with an under-display selfie camera.

This will be an improvement over the monochrome display found on the Mi Band 3. While its rest of the design is reminiscent of the previous generation, the addition of a colour display will make for a notable addition. As a colour display consumes more power than a monochrome display; the future smart wearable may have a 135 mAh battery which is a considerable bump from 110 mAh found on the current device. Noteworthy, disparate to previous Mi Band versions, the Mi Band 4 will have an inbuilt charging port. The previous generation devices have proprietary charging connectors; which have not been well received by numerous consumers due to their complexity.

Xiaomi Delays The Release Of Its Foldable Smartphone Over Market Insecurity

Foldable smartphones are expected to be the technology trend for the year 2019. Samsung and Huawei have both showcased their first devices capable of folding into half. These handsets are the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X respectively. While the former was deemed ready for sales a few weeks ago, incidents questioning the smartphone’s durability surfaced online. This led to Samsung recalling the units in a bid to fix the issues plaguing them. While the market waits patiently for the Galaxy Fold to show up again, the major blow of the incidents seems to have been suffered by Xiaomi.

The Chinese smartphone OEM showed off its foldable smartphone in a series of teasers and videos over the past few months. It was also reported the device could make its way into the market in a few months at half the price of the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X. However, due to the increasing market insecurities over Foldable Smartphones, Xiaomi seems to have pushed back the release of its foldable handset.

    Xiaomi Foldable Smartphone

Investors in the Xiaomi supply chain, had revealed that while the launch of the device was earlier planned in the month of June, our original source claims it has been postponed for later in the summer. This will allow Xiaomi to further test their foldable device.
