Xiaomi’s Component Supplier, Holitech Sets Up A Massive Manufacturing Unit In Noida

India was one of the first countries where the Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi launched its offerings. The company over the last few years due to value for money products has seen significant growth in the Indian market. To further increase its affinity with the local customers, the company has been promoting locally assembled devices. The “Make In India” movement initiated by the Indian government has also been well embraced by the company. To take the local assembly step further, Xiaomi’s key component supplier Holitech has set up a massive plant in the city of Greater Noida.

Speaking of “Make In India” movement, several companies including Xiaomi, imported key components of smartphones from China which were locally assembled into functional smartphones. This partial local manufacturing has also seen somewhat of a backlash from users who were aware of this strategy. However, it must be noted that these companies were forced into opting for the aforementioned choices. As manufacturing of vital components like display, chipset, fingerprint sensors takes state of the art infrastructure for which takes a lot of capital upfront. Xiaomi Redmi 7

With the growing demand for smartphones and conditions favourable for setting up large assembly units, Holitech has inaugurated the is first assembly facility in Noida which spans across 25000 square metres. Talking about investment figures, the company will invest a sum of over 200 Million USD in it over the next three years. Noteworthy, the manufacturing unit will reportedly generate 6000 jobs. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7

The components that Holitech Technology will manufacture locally in the Greater Noida plant include Compact Camera Modules (CCM), Capacitive Touch Screen module (CTM), Thin Film Transistor (TFT), Flexible Printed Circuits (FPC), and fingerprint modules. Praiseworthy, the Holitech plant also boasts of class 1000 and class 100 clean room which is an industry first. A cleanroom is a contained space where provisions are made to reduce particulate contamination and control other environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity and pressure.

All in all, this is a positive step for Xiaomi’s growth in the country. Although not discussed by the company officials, locally assembled components might further drive down the costs of smartphones which are already aggressively priced.

  • Leila : Review

    Leila : Review

It is not often that Indian television ventures into dystopian worlds, in-fact Leila marks the first ever Indian Television Show to feature a dystopian India in the not so near future. A world ruled by religion and divided by categories and caste. Sounds a lot like the present, but may be a just a over imagined version of an expected reality of our future, at least from the creators mindset.

    Storyline

Based on Prayaag Akbar’s book “Leila,” the Netflix original series talks about a dystopian India in the 2040s called “Aryavarta”. In Aryavarta intercaste marriages are illegal and water and basic life resources are scarce.

The storyline is strong and heart wrenching, but also slow at times. All characters introduced in the show are new, and hence only by episode 2 does the viewer get any grasp of what is happening in this world.

The communities and religions are divided into sectors and ruled with an iron fist. Delinquents are picked up by Repeaters, Aryavarta forces and sent to purifying camps,  where they undergo “Shuddhi Parikshas”. And are brainwashed into the new world order.

Shalini (Huma Qureshi) is the protagonist, post marrying a Muslim, Rizwan (Rahul Khanna). Is taken to a “Purifying camp” by Repeaters and her daughter “Leila” is now missing. The story follows six episodes of Shalini navigating this new world and locating her daughter.

    Cinematography

The show is shot entirely in Delhi, so those familiar with places like Nehru Place, Lodhi gardens and our famous Garbage dump will easily relate to the show.

Leila is also the first Indian show that manages a dystopian world that seems believable, and even though it shows a general propaganda machine it is evident that the creators of the show managed a tastefully shot future.

There are parts which seem annoying, the use of current generation cars, and homes, and while they show a walled city separated from the “doosh” ( an untouchable caste in the show) technology is still very outdated. These is also a poor use of drones in one of the episodes that is extremely cringe.

Use of current cars, breaks the future

Certain parts of the show create the concept of a future with good use of graphics show a wide use of holographic technology, modern tablets and scanners that scan chips embedded in wrists of citizens behind tattoos.

Despite the lack of a perfect future from a cinematography perspective the show is shot beautifully and then graded well. Even parts of the show shot in garbage dumps look great and really capture the mind of the viewer. There is an overcast throughout the show which really engulfs you, and makes the entire prospect believable.

The show is also available in both English and Hindi, originally shot in Hindi, but voiced over by the same actors in English.

    Verdict

The show seems similar to the Handmaids Tale, from design and storyline, especially in the early episodes. However it takes a different twist as it progresses.

Taste full use of futuristic technology throughout the show. Including this foldable glass laptop !

It is also clear that some characters are not properly suited for their roles initially. Especially Bhanu (played by Siddharth) who is Shalini’s minder and only by the 4th episode seems comfortable with the role.

This is the best portrayal of a propaganda based system of government, from a design and execution perspective. The world, however, seems tiny and characters are less. The show constantly revolves around a small region which makes the imaginative scope of Aryavarta small. The rulers of Aryavarta all seem extremely close and the shows creators seem to be in a rush to introduce characters on a grand scale.

The story line is also slower than one would like, but the show is beautifully crafted and engulfs you with intrigue and shock. Certain aspects of the show will make you reflect your own choices and this is what makes Leila special.

We would like to see Leila return for several more seasons, and create a larger world with a deeper storyline. The 6 episode show seems to near a closing, but there is a lot expected from the future from the show.

Leila is grippy and exciting, and is an exceptional watch, as it sets a benchmark for TV shows in India. Now if they could just use some electric cars and more graphics we would be thrilled.

  • Adobe Trains AI To Undo Facial Manipulations In Photoshop

Adobe Trains AI To Undo Facial Manipulations In Photoshop

With the increase of fake and manipulative images on the internet, online frauds and scams have been rising in number. One of the most widely used image editing applications, Adobe Photoshop may receive a feature soon that will enable users to uncover any changes that have been previously made to images. This will be enabled with the help of Artificial Intelligence or AI.

    Adobe Photoshop

Adobe researchers collaborated with UC Berkeley students to train AI so that it can detect facial manipulation in images edited with Adobe’s Image editing software. This will be made possible with the help of Photoshop’s ‘Face Aware Liquify’ feature. It uses the same technique which is used in forensics to match the faces in the database with real-time images. This technique, once incorporated, will be a major step towards democratising image forensics.

Previously, Adobe research laid its emphasis on splicing, removal and cloning. On the other hand, Adobe Photoshop’s new Face Aware Liquify feature focuses more on detecting modifications to facial features, for instance, facial expressions. As per Adobe, the three main terms that are considered while researching the images are as follows:

    • Can the image detection tool detect any form of manipulated faces?
    • Can that tool decode the specific manipulation made to the image features?
    • Can the changes be reversed towards the original image?

With the implementation of deep learning, researchers developed a huge training set of images, which was then scripted with the help of the Photoshop. Noteworthy, the image data set was created by scraping thousands images off the internet. Facial warping and other distortions were applied to the images, which were easily detected by the AI. This feature will greatly help restore the faith of people in Social media, the company states. Profiles can be more accurately analysed with the new feature that may be integrated with Adobe Photoshop in the upcoming updates.

OnePlus Leaked User Email Addresses Caused By Security Flaw

OnePlus has seen a great degree of success in the global market, especially India. The smartphone manufacturer is cementing its place with various critically acclaimed devices. However, A new report uncovers a critical flaw in OnePlus’s various devices that are widely known and owned. The Chinese company has allegedly had its user’s email addresses leaked by a security flaw.

    OnePlus

Every new device carries (by default) the ‘Shot on OnePlus’ app that has a security flaw that revealed email addresses of several hundreds of its user base. The aforementioned application provides a platform for OnePlus users to upload that can be used and seen by other customers globally. However, it was discovered that the API that enables the link between OnePlus servers and the app was allegedly leaking email addresses associated with photo submissions.

    OnePlus

The company was made aware of the flaw in May and has since patched the mistake but more changes have yet to be made for a complete fix. This app can be accessed through the Wallpapers selection menu and asks users to log in with their email addresses to upload images. The selected pictures that get publicized on the company’s website were found to have an easily accessible API. This API required an unencrypted key to retrieve an access token that allowed anyone to view email addresses of original uploaders.

    OnePlus

The API was hosted on the OnePlus official website and the company is not sure of how long the leak has existed. The company has started investigating the serious matter and are taking users reports received into account as well. Regardless of the fix, the API that got patched can still be bypassed, with an update for the same being worked on. OnePlus has reportedly obscured the email addresses available through the API by adding asterisks to its local parts.

No reports have yet surfaced that point at any sort of exploitation caused by the security flaw. This was not the first time the company has faced a security issue, facing criticism for storing user data without consent back in 2017 via OxygenOS. A bootloader vulnerability on the OnePlus 6 had also hit the headlines in the year 2018.

Now the smartphone manufacturer has seen widespread popularity and growth in sales, especially in India. The company had arguably started the trend of manufacturing premium-grade smartphones at relatively affordable prices. Hence, the company’s stance on security and privacy is integral for the “Never Settle” moniker.

Samsung Galaxy Fold To Be Delayed Further, Might Launch After August

Samsung introduced its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold at the Unpacked event back in the month of February alongside the Galaxy S10 series. It was revealed that the sales for the device will start from the 26th of April. However, early review units of the handsets started breaking and malfunctioning for reviewers. This led to the company recalling all review units and release a statement that the launch date of the Galaxy Fold has been delayed. It has been over two months now, and no official re-launch date for the smartphone has been provided by Samsung. Now, a senior company executive has told a Korean media outlet that the launch is being delayed further, as no progress has been made on the device.

    Galaxy Fold Delay

    Samsung Galaxy Fold

As mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy Fold has been delayed once again in hitting the market. While it was being speculated that the smartphone will be reintroduced in the month of July, a senior Samsung executive has revealed that is not the case. He claims that if a launch was scheduled within a month from now, an announcement would have been already made. It has also been revealed that no progress has been made since the recall of the device in the month of April. It may insinuate that the company has not found a real solution for the hinge problem with the handset, or it hasn’t progressed with a new launch date. With the latest news of a delay, the Samsung Galaxy Fold may be launched after the Galaxy Note 10; which is speculated to launch in the month of August.

The Galaxy Fold faced issues with its screen and hinge in the month of April 2019. Some reviewers inadvertently peeled off a protective covering (which acted as an adhesive), leading to screen breakage. Others had issues arising because of the material (dust and debris) that entered the gap in the phone’s hinge. Even though the company previously claimed that it has successfully eliminated all the problems with the device, a statement regarding the launch date is still awaited.

iPhone 11 Series Multiple Camera Setup Confirmed

We have already seen what form factor Apple’s new iPhone 11 series will sport. However, the first confirmed report of their designs is finally surfacing amidst numerous rumours and leaks. Apple’s much-awaited latest generation of flagships has now had its multiple camera setups configurations spotted through a case. These protective cases include designs of the upcoming iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and the iPhone 11R.

    iPhone 11

Olixar, one of the most renowned cases and accessories manufacturers for smartphones, has made glass protectors for the iPhone 11’s rear cameras set up. The camera covers carry designs for all three variants of Apple’s latest flagship devices. Furthermore, the UK based retailer made a video regarding the camera protectors design which also reveals that the product is already being mass produced and ready for sales.

    iPhone 11

This showcases the company’s confidence in the layout of the protectors being accurate. It can be seen that the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max sport a triple camera module while the iPhone 11R receives a dual camera system, an addition of one camera in the whole series overall. From the given designs, the camera cut-outs also point at a quad-LED flash on the back with a thinner camera bump overall. It is expected that Apple will provide improvements to the Smart HDR on the upcoming devices.

The rumours surrounding the latest iPhone series camera may suggest Apple adding a 120-degree wide-angle lens for the first time in its devices. Additionally, a standard primary shooter and a telephoto lens that is optically stabilized is expected to make a return once again. iPhone 11R, on the other hand, will probably only sport the standard primary camera alongside the telephoto lens.

The chipset is likely to be manufactured on the 7nm fabrication process like its predecessor. As mentioned above, the Snapdragon 865 will arrive in two variants, with one supporting 5G; the next generation of mobile connectivity, with the help of an integrated modem. • Huawei Might Opt For Sailfish OS For Its Future Smartphones

Huawei Might Opt For Sailfish OS For Its Future Smartphones

Chinese tech giant, Huawei has been facing tough times lately after the US Commerce Department imposed a trade ban on it. The said ban has been imposed over accusations that the hardware and networking equipment sold by the company has back doors which can reveal sensitive user data to the Chinese government. Following the ban, all American companies had to end any sort of trade relations with Huawei. The biggest setback that the company had to face was in the form of support withdrawal for Android by Google. However, the company has been reportedly trying to overcome the hurdle by launching its in-house developed operating system which is allegedly called ArkOS or HongMeng OS.  Huawei Nova 5i

Amidst all sort of possibilities and rumours, in a piece of surprising news, Huawei is considering to use Sailfish OS on its future devices. For readers who are unaware, Sailfish is an open source operating system which is based on a Linux kernel. The OS is an evolved continuation of the Meego OS which was originally developed by the alliance of Nokia and Intel. Sailfish OS was developed by Jolla which is a Finnish company. It was first seen on the Jolla smartphone which was released in the year 2013.

Noteworthy, in the year 2014, a Russian billionaire businessman Grigory Berezkin agreed with Ministry of Communications for the creation of a Russian national mobile OS based on Sailfish. After acquiring a stake in Jolla, the businessman become a co-owner of the company. Since the year 2016, the UST group owned by Grigory Berezkin has been developing a Russia specific version of the system which is called Aurora OS.Sailfish OS Huawei

In the following set of events, 75 percent of the stake of the UST group was sold off to Rostelecom which is the leading internet services provider from Russia. Huawei while exploring alternatives for Google’s Android OS has been in talks with the Russian minister of digital development and communications about installing a forked version of Aurora OS or Sailfish OS on future Huawei devices.

Hot Wheels Introduces NFC And Smart Tracks In New Cars

Many still remember the fun they’ve had with the widely popular Hot Wheels toy cars in their childhood. Mattel introduced kids across the globe with every possible kind of cool cars there is to know about. The company had a diverse lineup of real life and even futuristic cars to put in children’s hands. Now the popular pocket-sized car toys are receiving a digital refresh with NFC and Smart Track.

Hot Wheels id by Mattel introduced new NFC enabled cars on its latest Smart Track. The application that allows kids to scan their collection is available in the iOS App Store for free. This app acts as a virtual garage that allows children to measure track speeds and laps through infrared sensors in the Hot Wheels Race Portal. The portal scans the cars and it connects to the Hot Wheels tracks. Users can actually provide cold hard numerical proof of who’s car is faster, inculcating a sense of healthy competition.

Classic brands have tried remaining relevant in the current tech-savvy younger generations for a while now. The hope of keeping collectable toys alive is a dying breed in the current world and failed attempts at digitalizing do exist. Mattel’s launch of an augmented reality game is one such example, failing due to poor compatibility with most handsets and even lesser remote-controlled cars. Hot Wheels id will still keep the physical aspects of toys while incorporating technology into its diverse range of racing cars.

Mattel’s Hot Wheels will add-on to the classic experience through virtual challenges and mini-games with the companion app. Those that own Hot Wheels tracks can just use a smartphone or the Race Portal to scan the new id cars. What differentiates the new iterations from the bunch is the NFC chip housed on the bottom of these toy cars. The chips will store the car’s performance data.

The app isn’t mandatory for the experience and children do not constantly require their parent’s smartphones or tablet computers as data can be stored locally and transferred later on. Hot Wheels Smart Track Kit brings the added benefit of a launch booster for the cars at the stars, making the toys the fastest and most powerful yet. Children can quantify the track distance and speed with the Smart Track’s 16 USB-connected pieces.

Huawei Pushes Back The Launch Date Of The Mate X To September

In the month of February, Chinese tech titan, Huawei launched the world’s first 5G foldable smartphone which is called the Huawei Mate X. Apparently, the device competes against the Galaxy Fold from Samsung which has an inner folding design. The device was set to go on sale starting 26 April, however, due to some technical issues the launch of the device was delayed for an undefined period. The device was plagued with display issues which were faced by early reviewers including Youtubers and social media celebrities.

To prevent the same situation happening with the Mate X, Huawei has pushed the launch date its foldable device. Instead of the original date of commercial availability which was set to June, the device will now go on sale in the month of September. Huawei claims that after the debacle of its rival from Samsung, the company wants to make sure their offering is upto the mark and is consumer ready.

Although, reports also suggest that the reason behind the delay of Mate X’s launch date is the trade ban that has been imposed on the company by the Commerce Department of the US. Despite the fact, it cannot be confirmed what the actual reason behind the delay of the device is. All in all, only time will tell what the future beholds for Huawei and its devices. To recall, the following are the specs and features fo the Mate X:

The Huawei Mate X has a futuristic design with front glass and rear metal construction. The device when in its folded state is 11 mm thick and only 5 mm thick when in the unfolded state. The right side of the smartphone is occupied by the volume rockers and the power button that also doubles as a fingerprint sensor. The Mate X sports an 8 inch foldable display that has a resolution of 2480 x 2200 px and 8:7.1 aspect ratio. However, when in folded state the large display can be used as two separated front and rear displays. The front display measures 6.6 inch while the rear display measures 6.38 inch.

The Mate X has a Leica optics equipped triple camera setup which is vertically placed on the right edge of the rear of the smartphone. Uniquely, the triple camera setup on is also used to take selfies as the rear display can be used as a control for the camera shutter. The bottom of the smartphone houses dual microphone pinholes, loudspeaker grille, and a USB Type-C port which can be used for charging and data syncing. The Mate X packs the Kirin 980 SoC which consists of an Octa-CPU and the Mali G76 GPU. It is powered by dual batteries which have a combined capacity of 4500 mAh and are present in either half of the handset. Praiseworthy, it also supports super fast charging at 55 watts.
