NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Review

It is one of the best times to be a PC gamer. Both team green and team red have just unveiled its GPU lineups and they are a piece of work. AMD has seemingly kicked off this pseudo arms race of producing affordable yet powerful graphics card in the market. The Computex 2019 keynote had no doubtedly stirred NVIDIA to launch its SUPER cards just 10 months after its RTX lineup. It would mark the shortest reign of any team green generation. Now, we will see how the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER holds true from the company’s promises.

    NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER

The RTX lineup from NVIDIA is being replaced by the new RTX SUPER series after AMD had apparently surpassed some of its cards. Team green claims that a noticeable 15-20% boost in performance will be seen across the board by SUPER cards over the vanilla RTX series. The review will be divided into different categories to cover all of the bases.

    Design

NVIDIA has moved over from its angular centric cosmetics that it had featured with its past iterations of GTX 10 series cards. Team green has matured with its latest RTX cards that have an elegant and streamlined design philosophy. The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER features a twin fan blade set up at the front which is housed in a mirror sheen metallic body. Notably, the last gen GTX cards features only a single blower fan setup. A rectangular shape is what we associate with any GPU design but the precision cut steel brick aesthetics have a unique charm to them. The front and the back carry the branding while the side has an LED backlit version of the same. All in all a great fit for minimalistic gamers after a plain aesthetics build.

    Synthetic Benchmark

It should be noted that synthetic benchmark records raw performance and does not always translate to better performance in game. However, for productivity purposes these tests do matter and we have ran tests on the following benchmarking softwares.

    • Geekbench:
In Geekbench, the OpenCL benchmark has the RTX 2070 SUPER receiving a 270,000 score. The score is reportedly a 10-15% boost over its predecessor the RTX 2070.
      NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER
    • MSI Kombustor:
The MSI benchmark is mainly to stress test the GPU to measure throttling or loss in framerates during the test. It averaged around a stable 460fps in the 10 minute test of the benchmarking software with no signs of throttling whatsoever.

    • PCMark 10:
The RTX 2070 SUPER achieved a score of 5279 pitting it in the same scoring range as the last gen GTX 1080 Ti and vanilla RTX 2080; and a bit over last years RTX 2070.

    NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER

    Gaming Benchmarks

NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER is an upper range graphics card after all, so the focus on the test will be on the 4K range as it is more than capable of dishing out 120+ FPS at max settings on 1080p for most games. So, to see how the sub $500 video card performs we had every game set to its highest possible settings, this includes V-Sync & Motion Blur being turned off on the high resolution. Anti-Aliasing will be turned on to the highest as well to see just how far the card can go. We have tested the GPU on the following games by using NVIDIA’s proprietary benchmarking software FrameView.

    NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER

    • Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus:
Historically, the Wolfenstein franchise have been optimised for AMD graphics card. However, the RTX 2070 SUPER showcased great performance at 4K. We observed the game averaging around 70fps with occasional dips to low 60s and jumps to 80fps. No input lags or stutters were recorded during the testing and the performance held relatively stable even during the most intensive fire fights and explosions.

    • PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds:
One of the most popular multiplayer game has had many issues regarding stability and frame rate in its performance. In our tests, the game on the highest graphical settings averaged 55fps for the most part. Notably, in door environments and gun fights were closer to 60 fps; while we saw dips to high 40s when out in the open which looked rather stunning. Minor input lag was observed during the red zone bombardment.

    NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER

    • Apex Legends:
Apex Legends, similar to PUBG, has been infamous for random frame drops and stutters during high intensive gameplay. Since the game is based on Valve’s Source Engine (also powering CS:GO & DOTA 2), capable rigs are known to power through even on the highest settings. NVIDIA’s 2070 SUPER ran the game really well with averages on 60fps which occasionally faced stutters dropping it to low 50s and indoor scenes bumping it to the 70s. For the most part, the game ran smooth even on the highest setting at 4K.

    Cooling & Noise

NVIDIA’s graphics card are known to traditionally consume lesser power, have lower temps and run quieter over its competitors. It holds true in this regards as well. The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER reached the lower 79 degrees Celsius during our stress tests. With prolonged use 80+ degree Celsius is possible but it is highly unlikely that most users would hit those high temperatures. The fans on the Founder’s Edition reached 54-56dB under heavy load and are as capable of any triple fan iterations that are sold from other brands like MSI or Gigabyte. Due to efficient draw of power and the subsequent cooler temps, the fans run less harder and also make less noise. It is one of the better video cards if cooling and noise are users concern.

    FrameView

NVIDIA has just unveiled a new integrated frame benchmarking & power mapping tool by the name of “FrameView”. The new software enables accurate real-time information regarding game performance like FPS and average FPS across multiple percentile, power drawn from the board, completely customisable overlay and even a log file for analytics. The feature is currently in beta and can be downloaded directly from NVIDIA’s official website. Notably, the software was used to obtain gaming benchmarks seen above for this review.

    NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER

    Price & Conclusion

The cryptocurrency mining fad had left the PC components market in disarray and we finally see a great comeback being made from the company. AMD and NVIDIA are neck in neck in the mid range GPU market which only encourages competition that benefit consumers. We strongly recommend this card to gamers that are looking for great performances at a reasonable price tag.

The upper range card is being sold for $499 (INR 43,600 in India) with various 3rd party versions also being available. Considering the launch price of the vanilla RTX 2070 ($599) and the last gen flagship GTX 1080 Ti ($699), the NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER is well worth its price for the competitive performance offered. Hence, the launch of this card also shifts the price range of upper range GPUs to a lower cost of entry.

  • Besides HongMeng OS, Huawei Is Also Developing Harmony OS

Besides HongMeng OS, Huawei Is Also Developing Harmony OS

In the Q2 of 2019, Huawei had to face a major setback after it was entitled to an entity list by the US Commerce Department. This step revoked all American companies from having any sort of trade relations with the Chinese organisation. The major impact of this move was faced by Huawei’s smartphone business which was left stranded after Google was forced to withdraw support of Android OS. Nevertheless, it led to the revelation that Chinese company had been developing its very own operating since 2012 which is called HongMeng OS. Now, a new report states that besides, HongMeng OS, the company is developing another OS which is called Harmony OS.

    Harmony OS

According to past reports, the HongMeng OS, although nearly ready, is not slated to ship on its handsets post US ban being lifted. The company had planned to introduce the new OS to its other products (like consumer grade home appliances) rather than smartphones. The news arrives after Android is confirmed to be utilized by the company as its primary OS. Notably, HongMeng OS is stated to be faster than both Android OS and MacOS, even if it is not planned for PC, laptops and handsets.

    Harmony OS

Huawei had filed a trademark application in the EU Intellectual Property Office for its new operating system. In comparison to HongMeng OS, Harmony OS is being built specifically for its diverse range of smartphones. It is probably under development to address future concerns of a similar ban being levied on the company again. Furthermore, Huawei is hosting its developers conference on August 9th through 11th at the company’s Songshan Lake campus. The main focus of the event will be 5G but more news regarding the potential Android replacement OS can be expected to be unveiled then.

The company is taking cautious steps post the ban. It is evident that future ban scares is one of the major driving force behind the development of Harmony OS. Huawei is decreasing its dependency on the west and US based companies through the new OS. No finer details are available as of now but more updates are expected in the arriving weeks.

Huawei Confirms HongMeng OS, But Will Stick To Android For The Near Future

On the 12th of July, Chinese tech titan, Huawei hosted a press conference in which it talked about the its operations over the last 6 months. The company, despite being put on the Entity List by the US Department of Commerce, has reportedly increased its revenue for the first half of 2019. The Entity List designation barred all American company’s from having any sort of trade relations with the Chinese corporation. Therefore, it could not sell the number of smartphones running Android OS which were originally anticipated. Following the ban, it was revealed that Huawei had been working on a secret OS for year’s. It was speculated that if the US ban is not lifted, the company would sell smartphones in the future with its in house developed HongMeng OS aka ArkOS. Fortunately, the ban has been raised and it seems that Huawei will continue selling Android smartphones rather than switching to HongMeng OS, at least in the near future.

    Huawei

A top official of Huawei was seen claiming an increase in the revenue for first half of the year; It can be noted that the ban took effect in May and that the company had a successful run in the first four months of 2019. Only the figures for the second half of the year will show the true implications of the ban on Huawei. Especially now after the ban has been lifted but its affects are still lingering; the America stance on the situation allows US companies to sell their services and technology to the Huawei as long as it does not threaten national security.

    Huawei

In the press conference, Huawei also confirmed the name of its upcoming operating system dubbed HongMeng OS. However, the company, unlike part reports, isn’t planning on making it into an Android replacement for its current or near future handsets. For now the company has chosen to stick with the OS being developed for its other varying product lineups. It is speculated that HongMeng OS can still be used if another US ban is levied on the company as a worse case scenario.

Google Allows Its Employees To Listen To Voice Assistant Interaction With Users

Google has been accused of privacy related data breaches on many different occasions. According to a new report, the search giant has reportedly let some of its workers listen in on the intimate conversations between the user and its voice Assistant. The company in a statement has sought to defend the incident by claiming it to be for the users benefit. It is claimed to be a crucial aspect of delivering a better user experience overall.

    Google
    Google Home, Home Mini

Google, in a blog post, stated that it takes various steps to ensure the complete anonymity of the user during the process; and that it has protections in place to prevent false recognition of the wake word. A report from a Belgian public broadcaster had first revealed the fact that contractors are paid to transcribe audio clips by Google’s AI Assistant; the conversation recorded may hold sensitive and private information regarding the user’s name, address and other personal details. A month ago even Amazon’s Alexa was accused of withholding audio clips of juveniles via its Echo devices without there consent.

Usually, audio clips are only recorded by the previously menitoned AI assistants once the wake word is spoken. However, multiple reports have shown such devices being woken up by accident and then go on recording its surroundings. Google says it has employees review the recordings to help in improving the system on multiple different languages to prevent such accidents. The company says it is a critical part of the process to make its Google Assistant viable.

    Google

Furthermore, Google also stated that it has caught two of its reviewers who had violated its data security policies. It is reported that they had leaked confidential Dutch audio data. The company has promised its review on this mistake and is investigating thoroughly on the matter. Additionally, Google claims that only 0.2% of all audio clips are reviewed by its language experts; the snippets are also not associated with the users accounts and the reviewers are instructed to ignore transcribing background conversations. They are only allowed to transcribe snippets aimed exclusively at Google and its services.

The renowned Taiwanese contract manufacturer has been working to produce the iPhone X and iPhone XS models in the country. Apple’s top end iPhones that are assembled in India will sell for a lower cost and are expected to arrive this August. According to the report, Apple is expanding local assembly in hopes to save on the high taxes; which is levied by the Government on imported fully built devices that are sold in the country. The company is also looking into collaboration with local sourcing firms to open its own retail stores within the Indian subcontinent.

    Apple

Apple is a popular brand in the premium market of the country with millions of loyal Indian fans. However, the market share still just accounts for 1% of the entire holdings. A shift of market share has been observed after the emergence of brands such as OnePlus. It is reported that Foxconn would start the production of iPhone X series of devices in Tamil Nadu, a south Indian State. Apple is already building the iPhone SE, iPhone 6S, and iPhone 7 models in India’s tech hub, Bengaluru. The American company’s local production of smartphones could provide a sizeable margin to the company on each unit; this in turn will help drive the prices lower.

IBM Is Developing A Unique Smartwatch Which Unfolds Into A Tablet

The issue with technology is its volatility. Dreams of today is reality in the near future. Previously, the foldable smartphone concept was an eye catching product of science fiction. We have all heard of foldable smartphone, which is one of the hot key words in technology this year; such devices have already been seen with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and Huawei’s Mate X. Now, a new report suggests that IBM is currently working on making the worlds first smartwatch that unfolds into a phone or tablet.

IBM is one of the major IT company which is renowned for its rich history with computing devices. The company is now reportedly working on an entirely new concept; we have seen foldable smartphones and soon we might see a smartwatch that doubles as a phone and a tablet. According to the report, IBM patented a design titled, “Variable Display Size For an Electronic Display Device.” The images portray a smartwatch with a thick case that will house multiple layers of the secondary display folded behind the main screen. These stacked display can be extended to be positioned on the sides of the main display.

Each screen individual screen measure 3 x 2 inches and when after unfolding reaches 6 x 4 inches. The third configuration only doubles the sides making it a tablet of 6 x 8 inches in size. The implication of such technology from IBM is massive. Soon foldable display under the main screen can help reduce overall footprint of devices which can be extended as and when needed. Even gadgets like smartwatches could potentially have more productive capabilities built into them.

Nintendo is one of the most recognisable name in the gaming industry. The company is famous for its popular game title like Mario to even its consoles like the legendary NES. Now, the company has announced the launch of its latest portable gaming console catered to a more affordable range of audiences. The Switch Lite will be a smaller device that is exclusively built for handheld play.

    Nintendo Switch Lite

    Design & Features

The smaller iteration of the Nintendo Switch had been rumoured prior to its official announcement. The Switch Lite sports a 5.5 inch 720p display which is slightly smaller than the 6.2 inch found on the original. It is built on a compact form factor for exclusive hand held gaming. In other words, users cannot remove the side controllers as you could before since the design isn’t built with modularity in mind. This also implies users sacrifice the option to connect to a TV or play certain popular games on the Switch Lite. The device does not feature a light sensor so brightness must be adjusted manually.

    Nintendo Switch Lite

Nintendo claims that the Switch Lite offers better battery life than the original Switch. The portable gaming console can play almost every game than the original could apart from the ones that specifically involved the Switch Joy-Cons being removed or played on portrait. The company will build prompts on its online shop to lets users know which games are not compatible with the Lite version. It is built on a single piece which means most of the body is a single colour such as yellow, grey, turquoise and even a Pokémon Sword and Shield edition. The device has a matte finish on its compact form factor.

    Price & Availability

The Nintendo Switch Lite will be sold for $199 which is $100 cheaper than its elder sibling. It is priced lower for a streamlined Switch experience with fewer features and certain inflexibilities. For the lower price users also skip out on TV compatibility, Tablet mode, HD Rumble and IR Motion Camera. However, it would not discourage its prospective buyers that are loyal to the Nintendo ecosystem.
