LG Patents Two Foldable Smartphones That Are Reminiscent of Galaxy Fold And Mate X
In the month of February, the Korean electronics giant, Samsung unveiled its first foldable smartphone which is dubbed the Galaxy Fold. Following its launch, Huawei also unveiled it variant of a foldable device, the Mate X. Unfortunately commercial availability of both the handsets has been pushed back to September(1,2).

LG Foldable Phone- Variant A By the time these two handsets make a comeback, they won’t just be competing with each other. According to freshly granted patents, LG, Korea’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer is also developing multiple foldable handsets which may launch in time with Samsung and Huawei’s offering.
Surprisingly, the foldable phones that the patent exhibit are highly reminiscent of the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X.
The first LG smartphone folds on the outside have dual display, out of which, one is present on the cover (outside) while the second is present on the inside. It features a triple rear camera setup which is accompanied by an LED Flash.

LG Foldable Phone- Variant B The second LG smartphone from the patent has a single large-screen display which folds on the outside. The design is similar to the ‘falcon wing’ which has been coined by Huawei. Besides, the position of camera sensors is also similar to Mate X.
Unfortunately, none of the patents reveals any specifications of the LG smartphones. Nevertheless, the devices if finalised for production and sale will pack top of the line specifications including chipset, camera and display.

LG Teases An Upcoming Dual Screen Smartphone Ahead Of IFA 2019
IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) 2019 in Berlin, Germany is just around the corner kicking off on 6th September 2019. The event will have various OEMs showcase their technological innovations and speak of future endeavours. Korean electronics giant LG is known to make an appearance in the annual event and for its invitation, has shared a video which teases an upcoming dual-screen smartphone.
OEMs such as Samsung and Huawei are working towards a new trend which is foldable smartphones. These devices feature a bendable display which the companies use to minimize their large display footprint by folding onto themselves. On the other hand, LG is moving in an entirely different direction. The LG V50 ThinQ from 2018 released alongside an attachable display that gave it the same functionality as a foldable smartphone. The Dual Screen folio screen featured a 6.2-inch OLED panel and gave users an additional screen for multitasking, playing games or taking pictures.

LG V50 ThinQ Dual Display Furthermore, LG’s shared video invitation prior to IFA 2019 showcases a similar technology being employed. The upcoming smartphone is probably the LG V60 ThinQ which will carry forward the attachable screen. In the video, it is visible that the second display appears to be identical in size to the display of the actual phone. It would be a significant upgrade over its past iteration which had thick bezels and a smaller size overall. Additionally, the Display Screen case will also feature a small outer display for notifications, date and time, giving the device a total of 3 screens.

Unfortunately, LG did not reveal a lot of information in the teaser which leaves a lot of room for imagination. While the foldable concept sounds promising, the secondary attachable screen seems more practical in use currently. More information is expected to arrive soon, so stay tuned for more updates.

LG Also Patents A Smartphone With Invisible Selfie Camera, Could Launch Soon
Innovation in the field of smartphones is at an all-time high. In order to increase the screen-to-body ratio on handsets, OEMs have shrunken the bezels around the display. However, this move leads to the dilemma of finding a position to accommodate the selfie camera and the earpiece.
As seen on several smartphones, the manufactures have embedded the earpiece in the top bezel which is considerably easy to attain. Apart from this, companies like Samsung and Motorola have developed smartphones that have a punch hole in the display that houses the selfie camera.
Even though this strategy has allowed solving the original difficulty, a punch hole in the display is clearly an obstruction which has prevented users from across the globe to accept this as a mainstream design preference. Nonetheless, taking this innovation a step further, smartphone manufacturers have been developing invisible under-display camera. A handful of companies that already previewed devices with this feature include Oppo and Xiaomi.
Not long ago, Korean smartphone maker, LG had filed a patent with KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) which indicates that it is also developing a smartphone with invisible selfie camera technology which sounds promising.

The patent granted to the company shows two different illustrations, out of which, the first one exhibits a smartphone with an edge to edge display without any punch hole. But the second illustration reveals when the camera application is toggled, the selfie camera manifests itself which stays concealed under the display.
Unfortunately, the patent granted to LG does not reveal any fine details like the features, name or specs of the handset. It is assumed that the technology that will be developed with this device will be incorporated in future smartphones made by LG.
In order to gain more details about the LG smartphone, we will have to wait patiently until the company publicises concrete information about it.

Nonetheless, the company was granted the patent a couple of months ago, therefore, we believe that a commercially available handset from LG with this feature could launch soon.

LG Is Working On A Flexible Smartphone With Rollable Display
The year 2019 has seen many new innovations and trends popularised in the mainstream mobile industry. One of such innovative buzzwords surrounded flexible or foldable smartphones. Samsung with the Galaxy Fold was one of the first to reveal a functioning smartphone with a flexible display despite all its flaws. Now, LG is also reportedly jumping on the bandwagon to introduce its own flexible smartphone which may have a rollable display.

Samsung Galaxy Fold LG has trademarked the name ‘LG Rolling’ with the South Korean Intellectual Property Office. Earlier this year, the South Korean company had also trademarked names such as ‘Roll Canvas’, ‘Rotolo’, ‘The Roll’, ‘E Roll’, ‘Dual Roll’, ‘Signature R’, ‘R Screen’, ‘R Canvas’, and ‘Bi Roll’ with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. Hence, it is speculated that an LG smartphone with a flexible rollable display is currently under development.

Foldable LG Phone Concept Notably, LG has already used rollable displays in the past. The technology is currently employed on its Signature OLED TV R. As the name suggests, it is an OLED TV that was showcased at CES 2019. The Signature TV features a 65 inch OLED display that can roll back into the base when not in use. Previously, LG had confirmed that they were planning to work on a rollable and foldable smartphone after various reports and rumours surfaced.
The freshly granted patent suggests that LG’s rollable handset is currently in-development stages whiles its name is still undecided.

Conclusively, LG may probably not end up calling the device ‘Rolling’ but use the moniker to represent its key feature. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Signature TV technology in smartphones is a great step in innovation for the mobile industry. Foldable smartphones have already been made and seen but a rolling device could be the next big trend for the arriving year. Unfortunately, concrete information is still lacking but more news is expected to arrive soon, so stay tuned.

LG Trademarks A Slew Of Smartphones Including One Called The M10
LG was one of the first companies to launch a smartphone with the Android operating system. In the early years of the decade, the company had delivered praiseworthy handsets like the Optimus One, LG G2, LG Nexus 4 which were highly popular amongst users across the globe. However, as Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi, Oppo and Huawei started selling value for money devices at marginalised profits, long-settled companies like Sony, LG and HTC had to fall back.
Nevertheless, after devising new strategies, LG once again entered the budget and mid-range smartphone arena with the “W” series of smartphones that debuted in India last month.
Subsequently, LG is expected to launch a variety of new devices in its home country which will be a part of a brand new “M” lineup. The company had filed numerous trademarks with KIPRIS (Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) under the category 9 that deals with “mobile phone and smartphones”. The first handset in the trademark is dubbed the “M10” which coincidentally matches the moniker of a smartphone made by another Korean Giant, Samsung and the device name is Galaxy M10. Therefore, it is possible that the upcoming LG smartphone will be targetted towards the budget segment. Furthermore, the company may even launch smartphones like M20, M30, etc in the distant future.

Other than that, the company had previously filed trademarks for the V60 and V70 labels which have now been granted. Going by chronological order, these smartphones will succeed the LG V50 ThinQ which was launched earlier this year. Taking into consideration, that Samsung and Apple are yet to reveal flagship devices in the near future which will be the Galaxy Note 10 lineup and 2019 iPhone lineup in respective order. Hence, it is possible that LG launches the V60 or V70 later this year to compete with these devices.
All in all, LG may be planning a proper comeback in the smartphone business. However, in order to verify the claims and theories, we will have to wait until LG officially spreads some light on its future plans.

BlackBerry And LG Are Making Autonomous Cars
A press release has announced the partnership of BlackBerry Limited with LG Electronics Inc. for a major new project. The aforementioned brands are recognisable for their consumer grade electronic products. However, the new project that is being spearheaded by the two companies will encompass the automobile industry, namely self-driven (autonomous) cars.

Historically, LG and BlackBerry were popular smartphone brands. The companies were critically acclaimed worldwide for their handsets, including India. The onset of the smartphones industries tech race had rendered BlackBerry and its business-centric devices obsolete. LG faired much better in comparison but has also seen a decline in the last couple of years. Though, the company is well known for its home appliances such as televisions and refrigerators.

The new project for autonomous cars is a heavy task. Self-driven cars are unlikely to hit Indian market anytime soon but are already being tested in developed nations like the US. Google, Apple, Uber and other such companies have been testing the technology for a while now. The automobile industry would greatly benefit from the expertise of both the companies in the arriving years.

The new agreement formed between the companies carries statements of the joint expansion through the partnership. Both the companies are large corporations that have only a small part of their business models aimed at the smartphone industry. Blackberry is well-renowned for its QNX software-based services and safety solutions that are being utilized by a multitude of companies.

Google’s Autonomous Vehicle The companies have formed a conjunction to push forward the development and commercial availability of autonomous vehicles. The entire automobile industry has been working on numerous autonomous locomotives for years now. This new collaboration will seek to accelerate the transitional process between traditional to self-driving cars. The project will encompass a network of self-driving vehicles that are connected to one another. It will also help boost the myriad of suppliers that automobile OEMs are working with.

According to the report, BlackBerry’s QNX-based software solutions are planned on being incorporated by LG Electronics. The South Korean company’s hardware expertise will use QNX solutions to build numerous next-gen components such as:
- A security solution designed to help safeguard the system against malware and cyber threats and prevent malfunctions.
- Incorporate an improved voice and sound quality systems, namely media entertainment system, for the car’s internals.
- To build the control system for autonomous cars.
- An accessible mobile interface with control over multimedia functionalities.
Furthermore, the companies’ goals are to “produce cutting-edge cars for the future of the automotive market”. BlackBerry, unlike LG, has shifted its focus on its software services that are used in the mobile and automobile industry. The Canadian company is already supplying its technology to manufacturers developing driverless cars. LG, however, is still present in the smartphone market with its latest W series entries being launched in India. The company is still a big name in household products and is planning diversification in new ventures such as this.

LG W10 Also Read: WhatsApp Tests Feature That Allows Sharing Status To Facebook
The implications of the joint venture could be huge. Both LG and BlackBerry could potentially reduce the time frame for commercially available self-driving cars. The companies will rely on each other’s strong suits for the partnership. It might not be too long before the project bears its fruits. Unfortunately, it is just an announcement and not an actual product launch. We are still years away from actually seeing such cars in real-world practice.

LG W10, W30 and W30 Pro Smartphones Launched In India
LG went on stage to unveil three new devices in its budget-mid range W series smartphones. The upcoming devices are a part of the company’s project under the Indian Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. The South Korean company has officially launched the LG W10, W30 and W30 Pro.

LG W10
The budget handsets by LG were made to specifically cater to the Indian market. India has one of the largest smartphone userbases, causing OEMs to make devices for every possible price bracket. LG W10 is powered by a 4,000mAh battery along with a MediaTek Helio P22 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz. Memory and Storage are only available in one configuration, 3GB/32GB. Furthermore, the front is equipped with a 6.19-inch HD+ FullVision display panel with 18.9:9 aspect ratio.

LG has invested heavily in marketing the cameras of the W series smartphone. The W10 features a “Smart” dual camera set up which will be placed vertically at the top left corner of the rear panel. The primary shooter is a 13MP sensor with PDAF while the secondary is a 5MP shooter for depth sensing. Front of the smartphone has a relatively large notch that houses the 8MP front camera. Features like face unlock and bokeh are also provided.
LG W30 & W30 Pro

LG is offering a slightly bumped version of the W10 in the form of the W30, that features various improvements. The processor of the W30 is similar to the W10 with a MediaTek Helio P22 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz. Even the memory and storage are the same with a single 3GB + 32GB configuration. However, the screen of the device is slightly larger with a 6.26-inch HD+ IPS FullVision with an aspect ratio of 19:9 and a tear-drop notch.

The camera of the device also receives an improvement with a 16MP front camera with face unlock functionality. Notably, on the rear, it sports a triple camera setup with a 12MP AF primary shooter that has a special low light mode. LG W30 receives an additional 13MP AF wide-angle lens along with a 2MP depth sensor for bokeh shots. LG W30 Pro has not been unveiled in the event although an announcement is expected soon. The company has teased its specs which point at a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, FullVision display with a tear-drop notch and stereo speakers (StereoPulse Sound)
Price and Availability
LG’s W series smartphones were developed and built in India, with plans to start shipping in the southeastern nation soon. The LG W10 carries a price tag of Rs.8,999 and will be available in two colours, Tulip Purple and Smokey Grey. On the other hand, LG W30 will have customers shell out Rs.9,999 for three colour options, Thunder Blue, Platinum Grey and Aurora Green. Announcement regarding the LG W30 Pro is expected soon with pricing that will most likely cross the INR 10k price bracket.

LG’s ‘Make in India’ product is a great new addition to the company’s budget line up of smartphones. This will help the company capture a broader audience of potential customers after launch. A homegrown device is widely appreciated as it is better for the country in terms of employment and economy during sales. Apple is also seeking to shift a certain portion of its production to India as well. The reception of these devices will be clear in the arriving weeks alongside the W30 Pro launch.

LG Patents A Smartphone With Punch Hole Front Camera
A glimpse of LG’s upcoming smartphone was seen through a patent granted by the Turkish Patent Institute. The device in question is reported to sport a punch-hole front-facing camera. This would mark the first time LG is planning to use this form of bezel reduction method for an all screen device.

According to the schematics, the smartphone will sport a punch-hole camera in the top left corner of the screen. The front panel is devoid of any seems apart from bezels on the top alongside an earpiece with necessary sensors and a buttonless bottom. The back, however, is a familiar design that has already been seen before. LG V40 ThinQ is clearly used as an inspiration for the rear layout, as the schematics show a striking resemblance.

The triple camera module at the back is in an identical pattern to the LG V40 ThinQ with a horizontal placement side by side. A flash flanks the right of the camera set up while the fingerprint sensor is placed right below it. This proves that the new device will not feature an in-display fingerprint scanner at the front. Changes to LG’s formula has been historically slow with the rate of adoption being behind other OEMs at this moment.

Unfortunately, no information about specifications as such is available regarding the upcoming device, or rather even if it is planned on being mass produced. With this only assumptions can be made regarding its specifications and hardware. If the device is similar to LG V40 ThinQ then it might see the same sort of top-notch hardware treatment if it launches the coming months.

LG has not had a great record in the global smartphone market in the last few years. With the rise of Chinese companies like Xiaomi and OnePlus, LG has seen a decline in sales both in volume and value. The company has to aggressively price this device or in future iterations be at the forefront of newer technology or innovation to survive in the current highly dynamic smartphone industry
