This announcement was made soon after Huawei announced that their Huawei Nova 4 with a similar display cutout will launch on December 17. Now to steal the thunder from Samsung, Lenovo has announced they will launch the Lenovo Z5s with in-screen camera cutout on December 6.

    Lenovo Z5s

The Lenovo Z5s is the latest member in Lenovo’s Z series of smartphones. The company launched the Lenovo Z5 Pro last month which has an incredible 95% screen-to-body ratio. The Lenovo Z5s was previously spotted on TENAA which had revealed a lot of information about its specifications. It has a 6.3-inch display with a very high screen-to-body ratio and a tiny circular cutout along the top bezel.

The Lenovo Z5s measures 156.7 x 74.5 x 7.8mm and it features a 3,210 mAh Lithium Ion battery. On the rear, the handset has a vertically aligned triple camera module along with an LED Flash and the fingerprint sensor. Other important details like the CPU and GPU are currently not available but it has similar specs as the Lenovo Z5 Pro. Most notably, the Z5 Pro, unlike the Z5s, has a sliding screen which conceals the front cameras.

Lenovo Z5s Hands On Images Reveal Camera Cutout In The Centre

The Lenovo Z5s was spotted a few days back in a TENAA listing and has been in the headlines ever since. The device sported triple rear cameras and what seemed to be a tear-drop notch. However, latest hands-on images of the phone reveal that it was a camera cut-out and not a notch. This is due to the fact that it is placed in the centre and not the side. Which is seen in the likes of the upcoming Galaxy A8s and the Huawei Nova 4.

    The Future Of Design

While it is evident that smartphone manufacturers are moving away from notches and sliding cameras, this might hint at where the trend is now moving. Being the third confirmed device with a camera cut-out, we might be looking at a new wave of smartphone design. The Lenovo Z5s is also important in other aspects as well. For starters, it places the cut-out in the middle of the display. And not to the right side like the Galaxy A8s and the Nova 4.

The centre aligned camera cut-out is not just aesthetically pleasing, but it also more practical in terms of the notification bar. The phone will be able to display all the notification icons without being disturbed by the camera. This is not the case with the right aligned cut-out. The right aligned cut-out will see all the notification icons being squeezed to the other side. However, the central placement also has its drawbacks.

It will be interesting to see how Lenovo sorts out the issue of displaying messages or notification alerts. The Lenovo Z5s is set for a December release, according to its teaser. The phone is said to have a 6.3 inch display and will be Lenovo’s first triple camera phone. It is also said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 chipset, but this information does not seem very credible.

Lenovo Z5s To Launch Soon With Triple Rear Cameras

Beijing based Lenovo launched a smartphone last month with a 95% screen-to-body ratio called the Lenovo Z5 Pro. The smartphone features a sliding screen and the Snapdragon 710 SoC. The less powerful chipset allowed the company to price it very aggressively compared to its competitors. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 & Honor Magic 2 are its direct competitors due to the similar sliding display feature. Recently, an alleged high-end variant of the Lenovo Z5, called the Lenovo Z5s has been spotted on TENAA.

    Lenovo Z5s

The alleged Lenovo Z5s is listed as model number L78071 on TENNA.  According to the images posted on TENAA, the smartphone has a water drop notch display and triple rear cameras along with an LED flash. The triple rear cameras are divided into two separate modules. The top two cameras are placed in a vertical capsule shape while the third camera sensor is placed below it.

For added security, the Lenovo Z5s has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The listing reveals that the smartphone measures 156.7×74.5×7.8 mm. It has a 6.3 inch display and is powered by a 3,210 mAh battery. Other details like the chipset information of the smartphone are unavailable, but reports claim that it might be the first phone to feature the Snapdragon 8150 chipset.

The Snapdragon 8150 chipset is set to launch on December 4th. It will be the successor to the Snapdragon 845 that is featured on the Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T. It will be manufactured using the 7 nm FinFET technology unlike the 10 nm used by its predecessor. Previously leaked benchmarks of the chipset reveal it gets the highest AI score for any chipset till date. However, it was tested on a developer board and not a real-world smartphone.
To summarise, the upcoming Lenovo Z5s looks like a promising device. Sadly, its launch date is currently unavailable and we will have to wait for the company to announce the same.
