If true, the smartphone could be the first non-Google device to run Android 8.1 Oreo. So far, only Google Pixel and select Nexus phones run Android 8.1 Oreo. A lot of premium Android devices are stuck on Android 7 Nougat. The other detail revealed is that it will sport the 18:9 aspect ratio.

While FCC listings don’t usually shed a lot of light on specs and features of a smartphone, this particular listing reveals that this Xperia device won’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Furthermore, the attached document also highlighted that the dimensions of the phone will be 152.79 x 72.42 mm and that it has a 5.7-inch screen diagonal display.

Mysterious Android Device Running Snapdragon 845 Shows Up On GeekBench

Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 845 chipset in late-2017. It will be the next flagship chipset for all Android devices and is expected to power the likes of Galaxy S9, OnePlus 6, Galaxy Note8 and more. While it has been confirmed that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be launched on the 25th if February, there are a few question marks around the launch of other Snapdragon 845-powered devices.

A new smartphone has shown up on GeekBench 4 running on Snapdragon 845 chipset. Unfortunately, the model number and even maker have been scrubbed. This means that there is no way to tell if this is the Mi Mix 2S, Xperia XZ Pro, Galaxy S9 or a different device altogether. The leaked device is also running Android 8 Oreo which means that the smartphone will at least have the latest OS out of the box.

Many rumours have hinted that Xiaomi will launch the Mi Mix 2S before MWC 2018 and that it will be the first ever 845-powered device in the world. However, with MWC about two weeks away, Xiaomi has not yet confirmed a launch event. This means that the company is confident about the Mi Mix 2S not being overshadowed by the launch of the Galaxy S9.

Along with Xiaomi and Samsung, Sony is expected to launch a flagship device as well at MWC 2018. The Sony Xperia XZ Pro will also be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset and run Android 8 Oreo.

Sony Flagship Devices Will Get Software Updates For Two Years After Launch

Interestingly, the first ever smartphones in 2017 to run Android 8 Oreo out of the box were not the Google Pixel 2 devices. It was the Sony Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact. Sony smartphones launched since then have come with Android 8 Oreo out of the box, which is different than what many other OEMs have done.

Continuing on that, Sony has confirmed that its flagship devices will now receive software updates for up to years after the launch. This means that the Xperia XZ1 and the Xperia XZ Pro could receive software updates to Android P and Android Q. The new Sony Xperia update policies were discovered by Xperia Blog.

However, the new policy does not guarantee the company’s mid-range and budget phones will get the same software update treatment. This will depend on whether these devices will meet the company’s “exacting standards.” Also, the hardware on these smartphones will have to be able to produce a stable user experience.

Another good news for Xperia flagship buyers is that the company might release security updates outside the normal Android OS update cycle. Over the course of the past one and a half year, smartphone makers have partially accepted that wireless is the future and that removing the headphone jack will drive the industry towards creating better wireless technology. While LG and Samsung, the other major smartphone makers persist with a headphone jack, Sony appears to have finally switched sides as well.
