Xiaomi Poco F1 Lacks HD Video Streaming Capabilities
Xiaomi’s flagship Poco F1, commonly known as Pocophone F1 in international markets hit the market earlier this month. Touted as the powerful new smartphone with a mid-range bracket, Poco F1 witnessed a successful debut in India by registering sales worth Rs 200 crores in less than five minutes.
In the wake of this success came an interesting revelation which might dampen your zeal to buy the phone. This crucial feature will be specially disappointing for heavy multimedia users. The smartphone lacks the Widevine L1 DRM, necessary for playing HD videos (720p and above) on most major streaming platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play. The Poco F1 only supports Widevine L3 which is only capable of streaming standard definition (SD) content. Of all the three Widevine L1, L2, and L3, Widevine L3 it is the lowest standard of them all. Widevine 3 is not adept enough to play videos on Netflix at a maximum of 540p.
The smartphone industry is not new to this issue. The same issue was previously observed in OnePlus 5T last year. A mere software update doesn’t help fixing this issue, as reported by Android Pure report.
Xiaomi’s sub-brand Poco launched its flagship smartphone Poco F1 in India at a price of Rs. 20,990 for the base variant with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. The 6GB RAM/ 128GB has a price tag of Rs. 23,999, while the 8GB RAM/ 256GB storage variant is priced at Rs. 28,999. An Armoured Edition has been priced at Rs. 29,999.
The phone has a 6.18-inch full-HD+ (1080×2246 pixels) panel with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, together with 8GB RAM and 256GB expanded storage.
The main camera layout entails a 12MP along with a 5MP AI dual camera setup. The primary 12MP camera is a Sony IMX363 ƒ/1.9 and 1.4 micron Dual Pixel Autofocus with HDR, Multi-frame Noise Reduction and AI scene detection with the usual Beautify and portrait options. The front camera is 20MP with a 1.8 micron pixel “4-in-1 Super Pixel” sensor an ƒ/2.0 aperture HDR, AI scene detection, AI Beautify, AI portrait mode along with Face unlock using Infrared illuminator and an infrared camera essentially allowing for Face unlock to work in low light.
While the Poco F1 is a powerful device, the lack of a basic HD streaming support, it may not be able to offer up the full experience of the hardware.
