  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra First Look

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra First Look

Samsung launched the Galaxy S21 series on 14th of January 2021. While the S21 will be a popular device all eyes are on the Galaxy S21 Ultra which apart from being a flagship, shows off what the company is not only capable of,  but, also what direction it is heading in.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra starts at a price of Rs. 105999 for the 12 GB variant with 256GB storage and costs Rs. 116999 for the 16 GB variant with 512 GB storage. There are discounts however, during preorder a Rs. 6000 instant discount and Rs. 10000 discount using HDFC cards.

    Unboxing Experience

The box of the Galaxy S21 Ultra resembles the iPhone 12 series boxes. Its a slim box and it is missing a charger. But the box is also missing earphones and the standard back protection case.  Apart from the phone box has some documentation, the USB C to USB C cable and a sim tool .

    Design and Build

Samsung has focused a lot on making the design of the Galaxy S21 series a lot more refined. The new color choices paired with the new Gorilla Glass Victus finishes allows for the “phantom” colors to have a leather like effect. The Phantom black is a matte black finished back panel that simulated a very soft letter like feel in the hand. The phone is durably built and has a IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

Samsung had already done away with the headphone jack so all you see is a water sealed USB C port which is used for charging and data. The display has subtle curves on either side making the rather large and unwieldy Galaxy S21 Ultra comfortable to hold with side grip.

The camera bump is now a part of the frame and looks more natural. overall first impression from the design and build are good.

    Display and Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has a massive 6.8 inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display which has a WQHD+ 3200 x 1440 px resolution. This gives the device a 515 ppi pixel density.  The display also has a peak brightness of 1500 nits and is protected by the same Victus glass that is seen on the back of the phone. The display has an ever so slight curve that makes it look premium and also improves the viewing experience as it simulates an edgeless display.

120 Hz on the display has been a standard for a while but the Galaxy S21 Ultra is capable of that at maximum resolution. even though on Samsung’s adaptive refresh rate mode.

Samsung has included 4 cameras on the back of the S21 Ultra . The main 108MP camera which has an f/1.8 aperture. will shoot 12 MP shots in the auto mode. two telephoto cameras with 3x and 10x zoom allow for a more versatile zoom experience. while the 3x has an f/2.4 aperture the 10x has an f/4.9 aperture which means that low light performance will be abysmal on the 10x.

There is an ultra wide 12 MP sensor which has an f/2.2 aperture. The rear camera is also capable of 8K video 24fps and 4K video at 60fps. The S21 Ultra is also capable of slow motion video at 1080p at upto 240fps and at 720p at upto 960fps.

The front facing camera sits in the centre punch hole on the top of the display and is a 40 MP sensor with an f/2.2 Aperture and is capable of 4k video at upto 60fps.

    Hardware and Performance

The Galaxy S21 Ultra will not disappoint with respect to performance. And even though India still gets the Exynos based devices. The Exynos 2100 is pretty well matched with the Snapdragon 888 chipset. Both are built on the 5 NM process and offer up an octave core CPU experience. However Samsung’s Exynos 2100 is clocked much higher with a 2.9 GHz top clock.  The GPU lacks behind on the Samsung chip, but they are well matched for AI computation capabilities and ISP performance with the 888′ spectra 580 providing computational HDR video capabilities which the Galaxy S21 Ultra misses out on.

Benchmarks are up there and performance from the device for the couple of days we have tested is irrefutably smooth. However, the Exnos 2100 when pushed seems to be getting the top back corner of the Galaxy 21 Ultra uncomfortably hot. We are using a pre release device with pre release software. So the clocks may be adjusted for the final release.

    Battery and Connectivity

The 5000mAh battery does justice to the phone. Samsung continues to include 25W charging as that seems to be sweet spot for battery charging speeds. No charger is included however, Samsung will happily sell you one for Rs. 2000.

The phone supports USB PD3 and wireless charging upto 15W. You can also reverse charge in case of emergencies for upto 4.5W.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Series is 5G capable whether you get the Snapdragon 888 or the Exynos 2100 variant. Both have Sub 6 and mmWave 5G bands. However, India is yet to fully roll out 5G for the next year or so and by that time S22 series will be out.

The phone has 2 sim slots and no microSD expansion. Bluetooth 5.2 along with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO for location mapping.  The fingerprint sensor is located under the display and is an ultrasonic sensor which makes for super quick unlocks.

If you are a business user the Galaxy S21 Ultra also offers Samsung DeXand Samsung Wireless DeX for on the go productivity.

Samsung seems to have ticked all the right boxes, however our testing has just begun and if first impressions are something to go by, The Galaxy S21 Ultra will be tough competitor for upcoming phones of 2021.

  • Samsung Galaxy Fold Up For Pre Registrations In China, To Launch Next Month

Samsung Galaxy Fold Up For Pre Registrations In China, To Launch Next Month

Korean technology behemoth Samsung announced its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold back in the month of February. However, just before the device’s official launch which was scheduled for April, review units of the handsets started breaking. The company then had to recall all the smartphones and postponed the release indefinitely. Samsung then announced last month that the problems plaguing the device have been fixed and it will finally be released in September. Now, the claims seem to be rightly addressed as the ambitious foldable handset is up for pre-registration in China.

    Samsung Galaxy Fold

The aforementioned news arrives after Samsung has started taking pre-registration for the Galaxy Fold on its official Chinese website. There is no shipping date mentioned, so nothing can be said on when the smartphone will start making its way into the market. The pricing for the device remains the same as announced, US$ 1980 (INR 1,36,500), so no changes there. Whatever said, it seems like the company is confident on the device and rightfully so, as in its last press release Samsung listed out all the changes it has made to make sure the Galaxy Fold is durable; and can stand the test of time in the real world.

    Samsung Galaxy Fold

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Fold has passed through some design and construction improvements to be certified for a relaunch. These improvements include the extension of the top protective layer of the inside display. The new layer now makes it apparent that it is an integral part of the display and should not be removed.

The updates to the foldable smartphone also include additional reinforcements to further protect it from external particles while maintaining its folding mechanism. Along with the aforementioned changes, the handset will also feature protection caps on the top and bottom of the hinge area; while also reducing the space between the hinge and the body of the device. If Samsung goes forward with the September release of the Galaxy Fold, it would rival the spotlight Apple’s next iPhones will get which are also due in a couple of weeks. Whatever be the case, we will not have to wait too long to find out.

Samsung Galaxy M90 To Soon Launch In India

In January of 2019, Samsung introduced its new Galaxy M series range of smartphones. The main focus of this lineup was to regain its lost market share in India’s highly competitive budget segment. Currently, the affordable segment has the most selling units for any company and is dominated by the likes of Xiaomi. Now, the South Korean giant is reportedly launching the Galaxy M90 in Q4 of 2019 to keep its lineup robust during holiday seasons as well.

Samsung needs to make an impressive impact with the Galaxy M90 to stay competitively viable in this segment. It will need to price the device accordingly as well considering Xiaomi has just launched its Redmi K20 series. Xiaomi generally drops prices for its smartphone during holiday sales as well, so Samsung should be wary of its pricing. Conclusively, it remains to be seen if Samsung introduces a well featured-packed phone or a really affordable one to stay relevant.

An unreleased Samsung smartphone with model number ‘SM-A707F’ has been spotted on popular benchmarking website Geekbench which is alleged to be the Galaxy A70s. Although, the listing exhibits hardly any difference in the upcoming device. The key highlighting change the Galaxy A70s is expected to have is in the camera department. The device is reported to feature a 64 MP camera.Samsung Galaxy A70

It is assumed that the upcoming Galaxy device will incorporate the company’s in-house developed ISOCELL GW1 that utilises pixel binning technology to combine image data from four pixels.

Besides Samsung, Xiaomi and Realme are also developing smartphones with the same sensor which are expected to launch soon. Both these smartphones will have a quad rear camera setup which, out of which, the primary sensor will be the 64 MP ISOCELL GW1.

Unfortunately, the Geekbench listing does not reveal any other specifications of the Galaxy A70s. Nonetheless, they are expected to be same as its preceding device. Specifications of that handset are as follows:

    • Security: In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Launched, Snapdragon 855 and Super AMOLED Display In Tow

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Launched, Snapdragon 855 and Super AMOLED Display In Tow

After much anticipation and numerous leaks, Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy Tab S6 in the US. Unlike what the chronology suggests, it is a true successor to the Galaxy Tab S4 which was launched in the year 2018. Even though Samsung had also launched the Galaxy Tab S5e earlier this year, it cannot be deemed the predecessor to the Tab S6, as the former is a mid-range device, whereas the latter packs flagship-grade specifications.

Moving ahead, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is a significant upgrade over its predecessor both in terms of build materials and features. It is shipped with an all new S Pen and the company has also introduced a new detachable two-piece keyboard (sold separately) that has a trackpad built-in which provides for a laptop-like experience.

It is aimed towards people who consume a lot of digital media, play mobile games and are looking for a device that can handle productivity apps like Office Suite and email with ease.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Design and Features

To begin with, the Galaxy Tab S6 draws a lot of inspiration from the iPad Pro as it features slim bezels on all sides of the display and it also has an aluminium back which is unlike its predecessor that has a glass back. Nonetheless, it is a tried and tested design that is both functional and looks pleasing to the eye.

On the front of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 sits a 10.5 inch Super AMOLED display that has a pixel density of 2560 x 1600 px. Besides, the display also features an in-display fingerprint sensor. However, unlike the Galaxy S10 lineup, the tablet has an optical fingerprint sensor and not an ultrasonic sensor.

As previously mentioned, the rear of the Galaxy Tab S6 has an aluminium back which houses a dual-camera setup, company branding, AKG logo and an indentation that holds the S-Pen firmly with the help of magnets. While in a resting position, the built-in battery of the S-Pen gets topped up and stays ready for use.

Under the hood, it features the Snapdragon 855 SoC which features an Octa-Core chipset and the Adreno 640 GPU. To provide the best of battery backup and performance, the eight cores are device into three separate clusters which are listed below:

    • 1x 2.8 GHz Kryo 485
    • 3x 2.4 GHz Kryo 485
    • 4x 1.7 GHz Kryo 485

For photography, the Galaxy Tab S6 features a dual rear camera setup which consists of a 13 MP + 5 MP camera. In addition, it also has an 8 MP front-facing selfie camera which is placed in the bezel above the display. Noteworthy, it can also record 4K video at 30fps from the rear camera. While the details about video capturing capability from the front camera are currently unavailable.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is powered by a 7,040 mAh battery which is a slight downgrade from the powerhouse found on the Galaxy Tab S4 that had a 7,300 mAh battery. Samsung claims a battery backup of upto 15 hours which will depend upon the kind of usage.

Other notable features of the Samsung tablet include side-firing quad speakers that support Dolby Atmos which provides for an immersive audio experience. The device also has dual microphones for making video calls or recording audio.

Talking more about the two-piece cover of the Galaxy Tab S6, the rear piece snugly fits on the back which also has a kickstand that can be adjusted to the angle of user’s choice. The keyboard also gets a couple of new additions and it now includes the previously mentioned multi-touch trackpad and dedicated function key to launch different applications or toggling DeX Mode.

Speaking of DeX mode, it offers what it is actually the acronym for, “Desktop Experience”. With the help of built-in USB C port, the screen can be mirrored to an external display or the device itself that mimics a conventional notebook computer experience with a mouse pointer.

To further enhance the Gaming prowess on the Galaxy Tab S6, Samsung has equipped the OS with Game Booster which as the name suggests provides the best possible gaming experience. The feature functions by minimising background process and smartly allocating the available resources to run the game. Also, this mode can be used to block any incoming calls while playing a game. Unfortunately, Samsung has done away with the 3.5 mm audio jack on the tablet and users either need to rely on a pair of Bluetooth headphones or use a USB C to 3.5 mm adapter.

Last but not least, the S Pen on the Galaxy Tab S6, except for taking notes can also be used to controlling the camera shutter. Also, it now supports air gestures which allow the user to toggle different applications by drawing gestures in the air, like drawing “O” to turn on the camera or swiping sideways with the button pressed to switch applications.
