  • Smart Speakers Could Soon Detect Heart Attacks

Smart Speakers Could Soon Detect Heart Attacks

‘Smart’ homes nowadays are incomplete without a voice assistant enabled speakers. These smart speakers have been becoming increasingly more popular as a household gadget. They bring a variety of both entertainment and practicality to its users. Tech giants like Amazon and Google have pushed for these type of products with their own Echo and Home products respectively. Latest updates constantly add more functions to such gadgets, like the ability to detect heart attacks being developed by certain researchers for emergencies.

    Smart Speakers

A dedicated team from the University of Washington are working towards perfecting a machine learning algorithm that can detect heart attacks. The algorithm is trained to monitor sounds for agonal breathing, where sharp gasps of air are taken by the victim suffering from a heart attack. However, this type of respiration only holds true for about 50% of the victims during cardiac arrest. This tool is being developed to be built into the aforementioned smart speakers to help save lives.

When detecting a heart attack, the devices can help raise an alarm even when the victim is incapacitated. The researchers behind the software are looking to make the process entirely seamless and in the background. This implies that the system can passively monitor the bedroom for breath patterns and under cases of attack it would automatically contact the authorities. A ‘contactless’ system from the smart speakers, as the team coined it, for relaying crucial information to concerned parties.

Unfortunately, the feature is far from being commercially viable as of right now. The algorithm is still being trained with a broad range of data to reduce false positive results regarding agonal breathing. A number of scenarios from different angles and distances to the smart speakers are being currently tested. Audio from real 911 calls that were recorded in Seattle is also being used to train the AI that will run the system. Additionally, the audios include samples from sleep studies, with the system detecting agonal breathing 97% of the time from a distance of upto 6 metres.

The system is relatively imperfect with false reports occasionally being treated positively. However, the team is working on ironing out such complications. Soon the world might just see a lot more applications similar to this in the future related to health, fitness and security with the smart speakers. For example, Alexa is capable of listening to the sound of glass breaking and alerting users of a potential break-in, a well thought after feature. Emergency safety nets are always a necessity as every life is important.

  • Samsung Patents A Gaming Laptop With Expandable Display

Samsung Patents A Gaming Laptop With Expandable Display

Earlier this year, the Korean electronics manufacturer, Samsung launched its first smartphone with a foldable display in the form of Galaxy Fold. Freshly granted patent to Samsung states that the company is working on yet another distinctive device which is a gaming laptop with an extendable display.

    Patent Disclosures

Samsung Laptop Extendable DisplaySamsung filed the patent for the aforementioned gaming laptop with KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) on December 2018 which was published on the 3rd of June 2019. The patent includes 14 sketches which showcase the different elements of the unique notebook computer. The standout feature of the laptop is apparently the display which expands to transform into an ultra wide screen.

Although the patent does not mention, the Samsung laptop’s display seems to have a conventional 16:9 aspect ratio which when expanded or rolled out converts into a display with 21:9 aspect ratio. This expansion of display provides an additional 50 percent screen real estate which can be crucial for gamers. Noteworthy, most FPS (first person shooter) games can benefit from this wide of a display as it provides a wider FOV (field of view) which in turn gives the user a competitive advantage. Samsung Gaming Laptop

The patent, however, does not reveal how Samsung intends the laptop to achieve this functionality due to lack of illustrations of the inner mechanism. Though, it seems that would incorporate technology similar to what a previously patented Samsung smartphone uses. Or rather it could also use technology similar to LG’s previously showcased rollable TVs with a flexible display.

All in all, the previously achieved technological feats by Samsung suggest that a gaming laptop with this feature is not farfetched. And Samsung may surprise the world soon by launching a commercially available gaming laptop with an extendable display.

  • Apple TV Will Gain Picture In Picture Functionality With Upcoming Update

Apple TV Will Gain Picture In Picture Functionality With Upcoming Update

Earlier this month, Apple held the WWDC event where it showcased the latest software versions for its consumer devices (1,2). Subsequently, the company has rolled out a developer’s beta update for the Apple TV which is reported to have a brand new feature. A Twitter user who goes by the username Nikolaj Hansen-Turton discovered that the with the latest beta update, the Apple TV has gained the functionality of Picture-in-Picture or PiP.

Several publications took notice of the Tweet and ran news covering the update. However, at the time, it was unclear whether it is a full fledged PiP function or just a smaller window of the video player which can be displayed while navigating through Apple TVs UI. Reports since then have claimed that the feature will allow users to stream two shows simultaneously. Though, there are some limitations of the feature.

Picture in Picture support will be limited for the content that is provided by Apple. This includes content which is purchased through iTunes, inbuilt Apple TV channels and the Apple TV+ service which will roll out later this year. The list of premium add on channels offered by Apple TV include HBO, Starz, Showtime, EPIX, Tastemade, and Smithsonian Channel.

To further clarify, if a user subscribes to HBO through Apple TV, they will be able to watch HBO in Picture-in-Picture mode when the new version of tvOS ships to the public later this year. However, if they subscribe to HBO through the HBONOW.com website and then watch the service via the third-party HBO NOW app, they won’t be able to use Picture-in-Picture mode. Although not mentioned by Apple, this exclusivity is maintained as Apple charges a commission from HBO when users subscribe to the latter’s service via Apple’s channel. Therefore, this is Apple’s strategy to push users to subscribe to paid resources via its platform

Conclusively, this seems to be a worthwhile feature for the Apple TV that users will surely appreciate. For users to access the feature, they will have to wait till the general public software update is rolled out.

  • Amazon Sued Over Alexa Recording Children’s Voices

Amazon Sued Over Alexa Recording Children’s Voices

In a new report, a Massachusetts woman is apparently suing Amazon over privacy related issues. The woman is seeking class action status to sue the company on the behalf on recording children’s voices on eight different states. The lawsuit was filed in the federal court on Seattle on the 11th of June. Amazon is being accused of illegally recording children via its Alexa voice assistant. Additionally, the illegal recordings were also being held by the company contributing,” a massive database of billions of voice recordings containing the private details of millions of Americans.”

    Amazon

The woman that filed the case stated that she had bought Amazon Echo Dot in August of 2018 and was not aware that her child was being recorded. The lawsuit states that children are not eligible to provide consent to being recorded. Furthermore, children at that age are incapable of understanding the implications of having their voices recorded by a company. Most children’ privacy-related issues are filed by referencing the federal COPPA (Children’s’ Online Privacy and Protecting Act) of 1996. This invokes state law, implying that Illinois, Florida, Michigan, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Washington all require consent from both parties involved in the case of “the recording of oral communications.”

For example, Apple’s Siri voice assistant abides by these laws by deleting any recordings taken for the tasks at hand. Amazon is being targeted with accusations of forming voiceprints comprising of millions of children. This could imply the company and even the Government being able to track kids’ use of Alexa devices in various locations while cataloguing detailed information on their life. Alexa can essentially record entire communications if the wake word is recognized. The prospect can be daunting considering the device can record private questions and encounters as well.

    Amazon

Amazon is clear in its stance regarding user trust and privacy, however, the company collecting data of children under the age of 13 violates the COPPA regulations. The Echo Dot Kids has a system for getting parental consent, but the argument states that this feature is easily bypassable by a child. Moreover, a report shows that the voice recording on default is saved for an indefinite period of time instead of just retaining it for the given task, as defined by COPPA. These recording cannot be deleted without contacting Amazon’s customer services.

The Amazon Echo Dot Kids serves the purpose of educating and entertaining children but the reality of storing data paints a dark picture for the tech company. A home is a place for comfort and letting one’s guard down but products like these seek to potentially invade the sacred sanctity from within.

  • Amazon Alexa Receiving Improvements On Indian Speech Patterns

Amazon Alexa Receiving Improvements On Indian Speech Patterns

Amazon had unveiled a new category of skill dubbed Cleo for its Indian markets back in 2018. The idea behind Cleo was to improve Alexa’s language model for its Indian users by learning from the customers themselves. The southeastern country is a key region for Amazon Alexa’s global team that is working on drastically improving the user interface.

The company identifying the potential in the market, worked on various regional languages to grow the linguistic capabilities of Amazon Alexa. The voice-based assistant has received a warm welcome in Indian homes with its Echo line up and is still gaining traction in the country. The Indian smart speakers market is currently dominated by Amazon Echo at 59 per cent of the market share while Google Home only has about 39 per cent, as reported by IDC (International Data Corporation).

With such a large user base it is inevitable that the company will seek to expand on its existing language parameters. The Amazon team dedicated to the Indian market have promised robust support on the upcoming regional languages capabilities of Alexa. The voice assistant in its current state is only capable of understanding Hinglish (Hindi-English) commands to a very limited degree.

Amazon is focusing on the content relayed by Alexa along with its contextual and cultural impacts. The company stated that Alexa must sound Indian when it comes to speaking Hindi. Several dialects and accents are being taken into account to give an actual life-like conversational experience with Amazon Alexa in real-world scenarios. Users can respond to Alexa’s English replies with Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Bengali, Telugu, Gujarati and certain other regional languages.

Amazon Alexa is being pushed by the company to stay relevant and practical in every home with near human-like natural conversations facilitated by Machine Learning. The company has heavily invested in India for developing skills for Alexa by hiring various scientists and engineers. Available in over 80 countries and compatible with 14 languages, the Indian variant would add a lot more languages to the existing list.

  • 5 Of The Weirdest Gadgets Ever Designed

5 Of The Weirdest Gadgets Ever Designed

Countless gadgets are released each year, with only a select few making it big. Nonetheless, many other gadgets which intend to solve a higher purpose might fail at the same. For instance, who wants to eat toast with his/her own picture imprinted on it? Well, some people do, because it’s apparently still being sold in the US and is the first gadget in our list. Speaking of lists, given below are some really weird gadgets that have been launched in the past years.

    Selfie Toaster

Yes, a toaster exists that can customize your slice of bread with an image of your face. Even though it’s requirements may be very controversial, there is a reason why the US company “Burnt Impressions” still ships these novelty appliances for $75 per unit. Users can get the toaster to imprint their selfies onto a slice of bread via a custom laser-cut metal grilling plate, that is also made by the company. However, buyers have to upload their photograph at the time of purchase, which means that you will be stuck with staring at one image on a bread slice.

    Pavlok

In an era of smartwatches and fitness trackers, there is a wearable that strives to make a mark as well. While conventional fitness trackers keep a track of how many steps you have walked in a day, the Pavlok has an entirely different motive, although for the betterment of many out there. The motive is pain. This may seem bizarre, but the Pavlok gives you a rather nasty zap if you are involved in a bad habit, such as biting your nails, smoking or cracking your knuckles. The body associates the pain signal to the bad habit you have cultivated, helping in lessening the same. Thankfully, the intensity of the shock can be controlled by the wearer, which can range from a slight tingle to an uncomfortable shock.

    MoodMetric

There are times when some unwanted gadgets from sci-fi movies make their way into the real world, making you wonder if they actually are meant for the same. Such is the case with the “MoodMetric”, which is a ring that measures the body’s signals to determine the state of the mind of the wearer. The data is then relayed to the wearer’s smartphone, where he/she can gain insights regarding his/her mood. However, it is very unclear why a person will need a gadget to find out what their mood is like.

    Sony Rolly

After the iPod hit the market and took it by storm, a lot of companies (including Sony) started experimenting on portable music players to hit the right chord. The aforementioned Japanese company made its entry with the launch of the Sony Rolly, which was a portable music player with a twist, literally. The music player was shaped like a football, and the best part was the fact that it danced to music. Costing at about US$ 399 at the time of launch, Rolly could twist, turn, roll and perform a host of other moves in sync to the music, all while flashing multi coloured lights. However, it didn’t even have a headphone jack at the time. Almost an year later, Sony discontinued the Rolly music player.

First showcased at the CES 2015, the smart belt intended to simplify some things that had to be manually simplified, simply saying. Belty could directly connect to a smartphone via an app that tracked the waist size of the wearer. Moreover, the wearer could use the application to tighten or loosen the belt on the move, which would save them the embarrassment of doing so in public. However, it’s been a long time since its announcement, and the company does not plan to release such a product in the immediate future.

  • Razer Is Making An RGB Toaster And You Can’t Do Anything About It

Razer Is Making An RGB Toaster And You Can’t Do Anything About It

Razer, an American Gaming Peripheral company is making a toaster. There, that’s the news you guys are here to read. After announcing the Project Breadwinner as an April Fools joke in the year 2016, the company is making it a reality. In the supposed joke, the company claimed it is developing an RGB Toaster which can make toasts with the Razer Logo on them. Now, the CEO of Razer has confirmed the company will start working on an actual toaster really soon. If all of this sounds weird, let us assure you that it is and you are not alone.

    History Of The Razer Toaster

So if you want to know more about this “amazing” and “groundbreaking” idea by Razer, grip on to something. The story starts about six years ago, in the year 2013 when a fan asked Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan about the Razer Toaster. The executive jokingly said the company has already made one and that is when it all went downhill. A man named Mark Withers, the mastermind behind all this, started commenting on every Liang Tan’s post about the fabled product. He also created a Facebook page dedicated to this quest.

This led to Tan claiming if Withers gets a million likes on the page, Razer will make an actual toaster. Furthermore, if a member of the page tattoos the Toaster image on their body, an additional 1,00,000 will be counted in the case. No prizes for guessing who won, as around 12 people posted pictures of them gracing the tattoo on their forearm.

    April Fools Of 2016

The tale continues, and it doesn’t get less weird from there. So in the year 2016, Razer maybe in a bid to tease the hardworking activists just wanting a toaster, released the Project Breadwinner as an April Fools Joke. This, as discussed above, teased an amazing looking toaster, with RGB lights.
