Scientists Develop Brighter, More Energy Efficient OLED Display For Smartphones

In this day and age of bezel-less smartphones, the most popular types of displays used in the devices are OLEDs or Organic Light Emitting Diodes. The type of displays use individual pixels that produce light and as a result, give out unmatched brightness and deep blacks. They are usually seen in flagship smartphones like the iPhone XS/XS Max, Samsung Galaxy S10 series and the OnePlus 7/7 Pro. Now, the latest reports reveal that scientists have developed an OLED display that produces brighter images and is more energy efficient.

    About the development

    Samsung Galaxy S10+

The scientists at the Departments of Physics and Chemistry; at the Imperial College London have developed a new type of OLED display that offers a brighter output and increases battery efficiency. The results have been achieved by controlling the basic chemistry used by OLED materials. It is revealed that OLEDs that can produce a special type of polarised light can be manufactured. This new type of display can bypass the anti-glare filter that is in most smartphones today. It leads to an OLED display that has better battery life and a lower carbon footprint.

As mentioned above, many of the modern smartphones use OLED displays. To ensure that the images produced by it are visible in sunlight, the displays are often covered with an anti-glare filter. Unfortunately, due to the dense nature of the filter, around half of the light generated by each OLED pixel is trapped within the display. This results in half of the original energy efficiency of the technology. Until now, most smartphone OEMs sacrificed the energy efficiency factor of OLED displays to increase readability outdoors. The aforementioned development could mean that devices in the future will solve the problem and offer an OLED display that is brighter and more energy efficient.

Anyone who owns a TV will have inadvertently seen a Samsung ad for its Galaxy smartphones. The South Korean company is one of the largest mobile OEM in the world and has the capital to heavily invest in marketing their various products. Problem thereon lies with companies being capable of illustrating their devices with an over-the-top or exaggerated fashion.

Samsung is currently being charged for such a fraud on misleading advertisement by the Australian Government.

    Samsung

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has alleged that Samsung is misleading its customers over the nature of its various water resistant smartphones. The ACCC claims that the company has portrayed its handsets in or near unsuitable environments such as swimming pools and oceans since 2016. Furthermore, Samsung reportedly did not have any grounds to illustrate it in an aforementioned manner.

    Samsung

Samsung sells a good portion of its smartphone lineups with IP68 water resistance; this means that it can last in 1.5meters deep water for 30 minutes. However, the ACCC pointed out, that this does not cover all types of water. The tech giant has claimed themselves that the Galaxy S10 isn’t suitable for beach use. Samsung is allegedly attracting customers with false ads that are not suitable for real-world practices. The corrosive nature of water with a high amount of salt is not taken into account in such ads. It can potentially harm the water-resistant devices and cause loses to unaware users.

Samsung is reportedly going to take a stand and stick to its marketing strategies. The company will fight the case against the Government agency’s allegations. It goes to show how large OEMs with massive amounts of capital can potentially opt for unfair business practices at the potential cost of its customers. These practices can go on to harm lower business rivals and other companies. Companies like these do not have such a large sum of monetary funding.

Huawei Working On A Smartphone With Camera Under Display

A few weeks ago, Chinese smartphone OEMs Xiaomi and Oppo showcased their first devices with a camera under the display. The latter then went ahead and revealed the technology at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai last month. Now, another manufacturer Huawei has filed a patent which reveals it is also working on a handset with the front-facing camera placed under the display.

    About the patent

    Huawei

Huawei has filed the patent for a smartphone with the camera under the display in the German Patent and Trademark Office. While the implementation of such technology has been showcased before; from the likes of Xiaomi and Oppo, the images in the patent reveal Huawei is trying to take a different approach. While the former two had a centred front-facing camera under the display, the latter places it on the top left. Furthermore, the display over the camera will keep providing necessary functionality within the User Interface (UI); and display information like notification and camera modes. The rest of the software of the smartphone seems like the EMUI skin Huawei uses in its devices.

The images from the patent filed by Huawei also insinuate that it may place other necessary sensors; like the light and proximity sensors on top of the display. While the idea of the camera cutout behaving like a mini second display seems innovative, it is unclear what purpose it will serve other than being a visual accessory. Unfortunately, more details like the specs and features of the Huawei smartphone are also unknown at the moment. However, as other manufacturers have promised a device with the camera under the display within a year, we may not have to wait for too long to see the technology in action.

Apple Is Ditching The Controversial Butterfly Keyboard On MacBook

Apple made a bold change to its laptops fundamental aspects back in the year 2015. The year saw the company make a subtle change in functional designs that had massive implications. A new keyboard design was introduced in Apple’s lineup of MacBooks that skipped the traditional key mechanism for a new proprietary design, that has since been dubbed butterfly mechanism. Unfortunately for the tech giant, the new design received heavy criticism due to its various vulnerabilities and faults.

The American company is now reportedly bidding farewell to its Butterfly design keys in favour of a new alternative.

    Apple

Apple had tweaked the keyboards of MacBooks over the years to overcome its tendency of early degradation and malfunction. The Butterfly keyboard was infamous for its vulnerable mechanism that was prone to failure due to dust particles and heat. Reliability had become a big issue with the new design. Every laptop introduced since 2015 was vulnerable to the failure. Apple had initially claimed that only a handful of laptops suffered, but soon realized the problem and introduced extended repair programs.

According to a report, future MacBooks will be equipped with scissor-switch design on keys that are reinforced with glass fiber. Surprisingly, Apple’s decision for switching keyboards is not due to its reliability issues but rather the cost-effectiveness of the designs. The company has stated that the butterfly design is too expensive for the company due to its low yields. It is being replaced by a new scissor design which is supposedly cheaper than the butterfly design but not as cheap as traditional keys.

The Huawei Mate 30 renders portray a standard modern handset design that features a unique circular quad camera module at the back.

Samsung Re-Engineers The Galaxy Fold, May Launch With Galaxy Note 10

Samsung’s first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold was unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event that took place in the month of February. However, due to the display issues faced by early users of the smartphone, Samsung had to push back its launch date. Unfortunately, Samsung could not ship out the devices even at the revised date.

Amidst all the embarrassment that Galaxy Fold has brought to Samsung’s brand image, a latest piece of information suggests, that the company has finally fixed the device which is expected to launch soon.

Samsung Galaxy FoldAccording to a Bloomberg report, with the latest iteration, Samsung has stretched the protective film that covers the Galaxy Fold’s display and tucked it under the outer bezels. Therefore, it is impossible for a user to peel it, unlike prior which was observed with early units shipped to reviewers. In addition, Samsung has also re-engineered the hinge of the Galaxy Fold which now sits flush with the display. Hence, the second issue that was reported in the form of a visible crease has also been fixed.

Besides, the report states that Samsung is likely to start shipping the major components of the Galaxy Fold (including battery and display) to an assembly plant in Vietnam where it will be put together.Samsung Galaxy Fold

The company refers the 7.3 inch Dynamic AMOLED foldable panel as ‘Infinity Flex’ which has a resolution of 2152 x 1536 px.
